Theoperationsectionisareferenceforthenewoperatorandarefresherfortheexperienced operator.Thissectionincludesadiscussionofgauges,switches,machinecontrols,attachment controls,transportation,andtowinginformation.

Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS) liststheitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsare listedunderthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhe pagenumberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance. UsetheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenance procedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, weekly,monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsifthecalendarintervals

providemoreconvenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeter reading.Performtherecommendedserviceattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Undersevere,dusty,orwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500 servicehoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursor monthlyandevery10servicehoursordaily.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairareessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavy-dutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsibleforthe performanceoftherequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenance Manual,andServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,ortorenderinoperative,anyemission-relateddevice orelementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewithall applicableregulationsoftheintendedcountrytowhichithasbeenshipped.Certainelementsof themachineandenginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeair system,andcoolingsystemmaybeemission-relatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedby Caterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcan adverselyaffectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertifications suchasbrakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerfor furtherinformation.

ProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Toprovideuniformequipmentidentification,constructionequipmentmanufacturers aremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentificationnumberingstandard. Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplytoall machinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN. Thenewformatwilllooklikethefollowing:

AutomaticLubricationGreaseTank-Fill-IfEquipped

IftheyellowLEDonthesignallampisilluminated,theminimumgreaselevelinthereservoirhas beenreached.

1.Ensurethatthefillerhoseisprimedwithgreaseinordertopreventairfrombeing introducedinthegreasereservoir.

2.Removethedustcapfromthecoupling(1)forthefiller.Carefullycleanthecouplingforthe fillerandthecouplingonthefillerhose.Thecouplerforthefillerhoseissuppliedwitheach automaticlubricationsystem.

3.Connectthefillerhosetocoupling.

4.Fillthereservoirupmark(2)forthemaximumlevelofgreasethatisindicatedonthe reservoir.

5.Disconnectthefillerhoseandrefitthedustcaptocoupling.

6.Placethefillerhosebackintheproperplaceinordertoensurethatthecouplingofthefiller hoseremainsclean.

Every500servicehoursreplacethefilterorevery500servicehourscleanthefilterforthefiller onthelubricationpump.Thefilterisbehindtheconnectoronthereservoir.

Ifthepumpingactionseemstogoheavy,checkthefilterbehindthecouplingforthefilleronthe lubricationpump.Gentlycleanthefilterorreplacethefilter.Ifthefilterisdamaged,thefilter mustbereplaced.

Iftoomuchgreaseispumpedintothereservoir,thesurplusgreasewillexittheventatthesideof thelubricationpump.Anyairthatisintroducedduringthefillingprocedurewillalsoescapevia thisroute.

Note:Duetotheslowcapabilityofahandheldgreasegun,theuseofagreasegunisnot recommendedinordertofillthereservoir.

Note:Whenyouusehigh-pressurewaterorhigh-pressureairtocleanthemachine,donotspray directlyontothelubricationpump.Waterordirtmayenterthelubricationpumpthroughthedeaeratingopenings.

Note:Theautomaticlubricationsystemreducesthetimeandeffortthatistakeninordertogrease themachinesignificantly.However,donotneglectgreasepointsthatarenotservedbythe automaticlubricationsystem.

Note:Checktheconditionsofthegreasepointsthatareservedbythesystem.Sufficientfresh greaseshouldbepresent.

Note:RefertoSystemsOperation,RENR6739,"TestingandAdjusting"forinformationon locationsofthegreasemeteringunits,thepointsofthegreasemeteringunitssupply,part numbers,andvolumeofgreasesuppliedbythegreasemeteringunits.

Ifanon-factoryfitautomaticlubricationsystemisinstalled,thesystemmustmeetorexheedthe performancerequirementsdetailedinSystemsOperation,RENR6739,"TestingandAdjusting".

PeriodicInspections

Inspecteachofthefollowing:

•Greaselevelinthereservoir.Refillthereservoirontime.

•Signallampisfunctioning.

•Inspectthedutycyclethatisindicatedonthesignallampiscorrectfortheoperating conditions.

•Lubricationpumpfordamageandleakage.

•Greaselinesfordamageandleakage.

•Conditionsofthegreasepointsthatareservedbythesystem.Sufficientfreshgreaseshould bepresent.

•Operationofthesystem.Performacycletest.RefertoSystemsOperation,RENR6739, "TestingandAdjusting".

•Cleanlubricationpumpandsurroundingarea.

Usethefollowingprocedureinordertoisolatethebatteriesifanyrepairsarenecessary.

1.TurntheenginestartswitchtotheOFFposition.TurnallswitchestotheOFFposition.

2.TurnthebatterydisconnectswitchtotheOFFposition.Removethekey.

3.Atthebatterydisconnectswitch,disconnectthenegativebatterycablethatisconnectedto theframe.

Note:Donotallowthedisconnectedbatterycabletocontactthedisconnectswitch.

4.Disconnectthenegativebatterycablefromtheterminalsofthebatteries.

5.Performthenecessaryrepairs.Replacethecablesorthebatteries,asneeded.

6.Connectthenegativebatterycabletotheterminalsofthebattery.

7.Connectthenegativebatterycableatthebatterydisconnectswitch.

8.Installthekeyforthebatterydisconnectswitch.TurnthekeytotheONposition.

1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface.Engagetheparkingbrake.Shutofftheengine.

2.Raisethehood.RefertoOperationandMaintenanceManual,"HoodControl".

3.Inspectdrivebelt(1).Checkthebeltforwear,frayingorcracking.Ifthebeltisdamaged, replacethebelt.

4.Ifbelt(4)requiresreplacement,insertasquaredriveintotheholeintensioner(1)andturn clockwiseinordertoreleasethetensionfromthebelt.

5.Removethebeltfromtheengine.

6.InordertoInstallanewbelt,insertasquaredriveintotheholeintensioner(2)andturn clockwise.

7.Installbelt(4)inthefollowingorder:drivepulley(2),pulley(3),alternatorpulley(5)and tensioner(1).

Personalinjuryordeathcanresultfromimproperaccumulator charging.

DryNitrogenistheonlygasapprovedforuseintheaccumulator. Chargingtheaccumulatorwithoxygenwillcauseanexplosion.This dangerwillnothappenifnitrogencylinderswithstandardCGA (CompressedGasAssociation,Inc.)Number580connectionsareused.

Whenorderingnitrogengas,besurethatthecylindersareequipped withCGANumber580connections.Donotusecolorcodesorother methodsofidentificationtotellthedifferencebetweennitrogenand oxygencylinders

Neveruseanadaptertoconnectyournitrogencharginggrouptoavalve outletusedonbothnitrogen,oxygen,orothergascylinders.BESURE YOUUSEDRYNITROGEN(99.8%purity).
