Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS) liststheitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsare listedunderthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhe pagenumberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance. UsetheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenance procedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, weekly,monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemore convenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading. Recommendedserviceshouldalwaysbeperformedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanis specifiedinthemaintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500 servicehoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursor monthlyandevery10servicehoursordaily.

CaliforniaProposition65Warning

DieselengineexhaustandsomeofitsconstituentsareknowntotheStateofCaliforniatocause cancer,birthdefects,andotherreproductiveharm.

Batteryposts,terminalsandrelatedaccessoriescontainleadandleadcompounds.Washhands afterhandling.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairisessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavydutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformance oftherequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenanceManual,and ServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,orrenderinoperativeanyemissionrelateddeviceor elementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewiththe regulations(40CFRPart89).Certainelementsofthemachineandenginesuchastheexhaust system,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeairsystemandcoolingsystemmaybeemission relatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcan adverselyaffectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertifications suchasbrakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerfor furtherinformation.

CatProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theCatProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to 17characters.Inanefforttoprovideuniformequipmentidentification,Caterpillarandother constructionequipmentmanufacturersaremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproduct identificationnumberingstandard.Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.Thenew PINformatwillapplytoallCatmachinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarking willdisplaythe17characterPIN.Thenewformatwilllooklikethefollowing:

1.Caterpillar'sWorldManufacturingCode(characters1-3)

2.MachineDescriptor(characters4-8)

3.CheckCharacter(character9)

4.MachineIndicatorSection(MIS)orProductSequenceNumber(characters10-17).Thesewere previouslyreferredtoastheSerialNumber.

MachinesandgeneratorsetsproducedbeforeFirstQuarter2001willmaintaintheir8character PINformat.

Personalinjurycanresultwithoutfollowingproperprocedure.When usingpressureair,wearaprotectivefaceshieldandprotectiveclothing.

Maximumairpressureatthenozzlemustbelessthan205kPa(30psi) forcleaningpurposes.

1.Removeboltsfromgrill(1).

2.Removegrilltoaccesstheairconditionercondenser(3)andthefuelcooler(2).

3.Toaccesstheaftercoolercore,removetheairconditionercondenser(3)andthefuelcooler (2)byremovingthesixbolts(4).

4.Inspecttheaftercoolercoreandcleantheaftercoolercore.Youcanusecompressedair,high -pressurewater,orsteamtoremovedustandotherdebrisfromtheaftercoolercore. However,theuseofcompressedairispreferred.

5.Installthesixbolts(4)toattachtheairconditionercondenser(2)andthefuelcooler(3) backon.

6.Installgrillandtightenthebolts.Lowerthehood.

Parkthemachineonalevelsurface.Ensurethattheparkingbrakeisengagedandshutoffthe engine.

8.Lowerthehood.

9.Starttheengine.Iftheindicatorfortheairfilterisilluminated,replacethesecondaryair filterelement.

Caterpillarrecommendscertifiedairfiltercleaningservicesavailable atparticipatingCaterpillardealers.TheCaterpillarcleaningprocess

usesprovenprocedurestoassureconsistentqualityandsufficientfilter life.

Observethefollowingguidelinesifyouattempttocleanthefilter element:

Donottaporstrikethefilterelementinordertoremovedust.

Donotwashthefilterelement.

Uselowpressurecompressedairinordertoremovethedustfromthe filterelement.Airpressuremustnotexceed207kPa(30psi).Directthe airflowupthepleatsanddownthepleatsfromtheinsideofthefilter element.Takeextremecareinordertoavoiddamagetothepleats.

Donotuseairfilterswithdamagedpleats,gaskets,orseals.Dirt enteringtheenginewillcausedamagetoenginecomponents.

Aprimaryairfilterelementcanbeuseduptosixtimesiftheelementisproperlycleanedandthe elementisproperlyinspected.Whenaprimaryairfilterelementiscleaned,checkforripsortears inthefiltermaterial.Theprimaryairfilterelementshouldbereplacedatleastonetimeperyear. Thisreplacementshouldbeperformedregardlessofthenumberofcleanings.

Visuallyinspecttheprimaryairfilterelementbeforecleaning.Inspecttheairfilterelementfor damagetotheseal,thegaskets,andtheoutercover.

Therearetwocommonmethodsthatareusedtocleantheprimaryairfilterelement:

•Pressurizedair

•Vacuumcleaning

PressurizedAir

Weartheproperpersonalprotectionequipmentwhenpressurizedairisused.

Pressurizedaircanbeusedtocleanaprimaryairfilterelementthathasnotbeencleanedmore thantwotimes.Pressurizedairwillnotremovedepositsofcarbonandoil.Usefiltered,dryair withamaximumpressureof207kPa(30psi).

Note:Whentheprimaryairfilterelementiscleaned,alwaysbeginwiththecleanside(inside)in ordertoforcedirtparticlestowardthedirtyside(outside).

Aimthehosesothattheairflowsinsidetheelementalongthelengthofthefilterinordertohelp preventdamagetothepaperpleats.Donotaimthestreamofairdirectlyattheprimaryairfilter element.Dirtcouldbeforcedfurtherintothepleats.

VacuumCleaning

Vacuumcleaningisanothermethodforcleaningtheprimaryairfilterelementwhichrequires dailycleaningbecauseofadry,dustyenvironment.Cleaningwithpressurizedairisrecommended priortovacuumcleaning.Vacuumcleaningwillnotremovedepositsofcarbonandoil.

InspectingthePrimaryAirFilterElement

Inspecttheclean,dryprimaryairfilterelement.Usea60Wbluelightinadarkroomorina similarfacility.Placethebluelightintheprimaryairfilterelement.Rotatetheprimaryairfilter element.Inspecttheprimaryairfilterelementfortearsand/orholes.Inspecttheprimaryairfilter elementforlightthatmayshowthroughthefiltermaterial.Ifitisnecessarytoconfirmtheresult, comparetheprimaryairfilterelementtoanewprimaryairfilterelementthathasthesamepart number.

Donotuseaprimaryairfilterelementthathasanytearsand/orholesinthefiltermaterial.Donot useaprimaryairfilterelementwithdamagedpleats,gaskets,orseals.Discardadamagedprimary airfilterelement.

SecondaryElement

NOTICE

Alwaysreplacethesecondaryelement.Donotattempttoreuseitby cleaning.Enginedamagecouldresult.

NOTICE

Servicetheaircleaneronlywiththeenginestopped.Enginedamage couldresult.

Replacethesecondaryairfilterelementunderthefollowingconditions.

•Theprimaryairfilterelementisservicedforthethirdtime.

•Theindicatorfortheairfilterisilluminatedaftertheprimaryairfilterelementhasbeen serviced.RefertoOperationandMaintenanceManual,"MonitoringSystem".

1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface.Ensurethattheparkingbrakeisfullyengagedandshut offtheengine.

2.Raisethehood.RefertoOperationandMaintenanceManual,"HoodControl".

3.Removetheairfiltercoverandremovetheprimaryfilterelementfromtheairfilterhousing.

2.Stoptheengine.

3.Allowtheexhaustsystemtocoolbeforeperformingthisprocedure.

4.Raisethehood.RefertoOperationandMaintenanceManual,"HoodControl".

5.RemoveanydirtordebrisfromtheareaaroundARDsparkplug.

6.RemovesparkplugwirefromtheARDsparkplug.

7.UseadeepwellsocketandabreakerbartoloosentheARDsparkplug.Ifnecessary,see yourCatdealerforthepartnumberofthesocket.Afterthesparkplughasbeenloosened, usethesockettoremovethesparkplugbyhandinordertodetectproblemswiththe threads.

8.Afterremovingsparkplug,cleanthegroundprobeinsidetheARDcombustionheadby runningaplugborebrushthroughtheholeintheARDcombustionhead.Runthebrush throughtheholeseveraltimes.

9.Carefullycleanthesparkplugusinganonmetalliccleaningpad.Iftheprobeappearstobe bent,replacethesparkplug.Otherwise,installtheoriginalsparkplug.

Note:Thesparkplugmaybedamagedifthesparkplugisdropped.Donotinstallaspark plugthathasbeendropped.

NOTICE

Donotovertightenthesparkplug.Theshellcanbecrackedandthe gasketcanbedeformed.Themetalcandeformandthegasketcanbe damaged.Theshellcanbestretched.Thiswillloosenthesealthatis betweentheshellandtheinsulator,allowingcombustionpressureto blowpasttheseal.Seriousdamagetotheenginecanoccur.

Usethepropertorque.

10.InstallthesparkplugbyhanduntilthesparkplugcontactstheARD.Tightenthesparkplug to43.4N·m(32lbft)to51.5N·m(38lbft).

11.Connectthesparkplugwire.

12.Lowerthehood.

•Fillthereservoiruptothemaximumlevelthatisindicatedonthereservoir.

•Removethefillerhoseandfitthedustcap.

•Placethefillerhosebackinthehose'sproperplaceinordertoensurethatthecouplingof thefillerhoseremainsclean.

Note:Every500servicehoursreplacethefilterorevery500servicehourscleanthefilterforthe filleronthelubricationpump.Thefilterisbehindtheconnectoronthereservoir.

Note:Ifthepumpingactionseemstogoheavy,checkthefilterbehindthecouplingforthefiller onthelubricationpump.Gentlycleanthefilterorreplacethefilter.Ifthefilterisdamaged,the filtermustbereplaced.

Note:Iftoomuchgreaseispumpedintothereservoir,thesurplusgreasewillexittheventatthe sideofthelubricationpump.Anyairthatisintroducedduringthefillingprocedurewillalso escapeviathisroute.

Note:Duetotheslowcapabilityofahandheldgreasegun,theuseofagreasegunisnot recommendedinordertofillthereservoir.

PeriodicChecks

•Checkthegreaselevelinthereservoir.Refillthereservoirontime.

•Checkthatthesignallampisfunctioning.

•Checkthatthedutycyclethatisindicatedonthesignallampiscorrectfortheoperating conditions.

•Checkthelubricationpumpfordamageandcheckthelubricationpumpforleakage.

•Checkthegreaselinesfordamageandcheckthegreaselinesforleakage.

•Checktheconditionsofthegreasepointsthatareservedbythesystem.Sufficientfresh greaseshouldbepresent.

•Checktheoperationofthesystem.Performacycletest.RefertoSystemOperation,Testing andAdjusting,RENR6739formoreinformation.

•Cleanthelubricationpumpandcleanthesurroundingsofthelubricationpump.

•Every500hoursreplacethefilterorevery500hourscleanthefilter.

Note:Whenyouusehighpressurewaterorhighpressureairtocleanthemachine,donotspray directlyontothelubricationpump.Waterordirtmayenterthelubricationpumpthroughthedearatingopenings.

Note:Theautomaticlubricationsystemreducesthetimeandeffortthatistakeninordertogrease themachinesignificantly.However,donotneglectgreasepointsthatarenotservedbythe automaticlubricationsystem.

GreaseRecommendations

GreaseshouldnotcontaingraphiteorPTFE.Usethecorrectgreaseintheautomaticlubrication system.

Theuseofapartiallyfluidgreasethatisabovethemaximumtemperaturethatisindicatedin Table1isnotpermitted.Useofapartiallyfluidgreasethatisabovethemaximumindicated temperaturecanleadtothefollowing.

•Excessivecomponentwear

•Areductionintheefficiencyofthesystem
