Readandunderstandthebasicprecautionslistedinthesafetysectionbeforeoperatingorperforming lubrication,maintenance,andrepaironthismachine.

Operation

Theoperationsectionisareferenceforthenewoperatorandarefresherfortheexperiencedoperator. Thissectionincludesadiscussionofgauges,switches,machinecontrols,attachmentcontrols, transportation,andtowinginformation.

Photographsandillustrationsguidetheoperatorthroughcorrectproceduresofchecking,starting, operating,andstoppingthemachine.

Operatingtechniquesoutlinedinthispublicationarebasic.Skillandtechniquesdevelopasthe operatorgainsknowledgeofthemachineanditscapabilities.

Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS)lists theitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsarelisted underthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhepage numberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance.Usethe MaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenanceprocedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsifthecalendarintervalsprovide moreconvenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading. Performtherecommendedserviceattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Undersevere,dusty,orwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500service hoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursormonthlyandevery 10servicehoursordaily.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairareessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavy-dutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceof therequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenanceManual,and ServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,ortorenderinoperative,anyemission-relateddeviceor elementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewithallapplicable regulationsoftheintendedcountrytowhichithasbeenshipped.Certainelementsofthemachineand enginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeairsystem,andcooling systemmaybeemission-relatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcanadversely affectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertificationssuchas brakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerforfurther information.

ProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Toprovideuniformequipmentidentification,constructionequipmentmanufacturersare movingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentificationnumberingstandard.Non-road machinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplytoallmachinesand generatorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN.Thenewformat willlooklikethefollowing:

1.WorldManufacturingCode(characters1-3)

2.MachineDescriptor(characters4-8)

3.CheckCharacter(character9)

4.MachineIndicatorSection(MIS)orProductSequenceNumber(characters10-17).Thesewere previouslyreferredtoastheSerialNumber.

MachinesandgeneratorsetsproducedbeforeFirstQuarter2001willmaintaintheir8characterPIN format.

Componentssuchasengines,transmissions,axles,andworktoolswillcontinuetousean8character SerialNumber(S/N).

Personalinjurycanresultwithoutfollowingproperprocedure.When usingpressureair,wearaprotectivefaceshieldandprotectiveclothing.

Maximumairpressureatthenozzlemustbelessthan205kPa(30psi) forcleaningpurposes.

4.Raiseairconditionercondenser(3)andinstalltowbolts(4).

5.Installgrillandtightenfourbolts.Lowerthehood.

2.Stoptheengine.

3.Allowtheexhaustsystemtocoolbeforeperformingthisprocedure.

4.Raisethehood.RefertoOperationandMaintenanceManual,"HoodControl".

5.RemoveanydirtordebrisfromtheareaaroundARDsparkplug.

6.RemovesparkplugwirefromtheARDsparkplug.

7.UseadeepwellsocketandabreakerbartoloosentheARDsparkplug.Ifnecessary,see yourCatdealerforthepartnumberofthesocket.Afterthesparkplughasbeenloosened, usethesockettoremovethesparkplugbyhandinordertodetectproblemswiththe threads.

8.Afterremovingsparkplug,cleanthegroundprobeinsidetheARDcombustionheadby runningaplugborebrushthroughtheholeintheARDcombustionhead.Runthebrush throughtheholeseveraltimes.

9.Carefullycleanthesparkplugusinganonmetalliccleaningpad.Iftheprobeappearstobe bent,replacethesparkplug.Otherwise,installtheoriginalsparkplug.

Note:Thesparkplugmaybedamagedifthesparkplugisdropped.Donotinstallaspark plugthathasbeendropped.

NOTICE

Donotovertightenthesparkplug.Theshellcanbecrackedandthe gasketcanbedeformed.Themetalcandeformandthegasketcanbe damaged.Theshellcanbestretched.Thiswillloosenthesealthatis betweentheshellandtheinsulator,allowingcombustionpressureto blowpasttheseal.Seriousdamagetotheenginecanoccur.

Usethepropertorque.

10.InstallthesparkplugbyhanduntilthesparkplugcontactstheARD.Tightenthesparkplug to43.4N·m(32lbft)to51.5N·m(38lbft).

11.Connectthesparkplugwire.

12.Lowerthehood.

Note:Every500servicehoursreplacethefilterorevery500servicehourscleanthefilterforthe filleronthelubricationpump.Thefilterisbehindtheconnectoronthereservoir.

Note:Ifthepumpingactionseemstogoheavy,checkthefilterbehindthecouplingforthefiller onthelubricationpump.Gentlycleanthefilterorreplacethefilter.Ifthefilterisdamaged,the filtermustbereplaced.

Note:Iftoomuchgreaseispumpedintothereservoir,thesurplusgreasewillexittheventatthe sideofthelubricationpump.Anyairthatisintroducedduringthefillingprocedurewillalso escapeviathisroute.

Note:Duetotheslowcapabilityofahandheldgreasegun,theuseofagreasegunisnot recommendedinordertofillthereservoir.

PeriodicChecks

•Checkthegreaselevelinthereservoir.Refillthereservoirontime.

•Checkthatthesignallampisfunctioning.

•Checkthatthedutycyclethatisindicatedonthesignallampiscorrectfortheoperating conditions.

•Checkthelubricationpumpfordamageandcheckthelubricationpumpforleakage.

•Checkthegreaselinesfordamageandcheckthegreaselinesforleakage.

•Checktheconditionsofthegreasepointsthatareservedbythesystem.Sufficientfresh greaseshouldbepresent.

•Checktheoperationofthesystem.Performacycletest.RefertoSystemOperation,Testing andAdjusting,RENR6739formoreinformation.

•Cleanthelubricationpumpandcleanthesurroundingsofthelubricationpump.

•Every500hoursreplacethefilterorevery500hourscleanthefilter.

Note:Whenyouusehighpressurewaterorhighpressureairtocleanthemachine,donotspray directlyontothelubricationpump.Waterordirtmayenterthelubricationpumpthroughthedearatingopenings.

Note:Theautomaticlubricationsystemreducesthetimeandeffortthatistakeninordertogrease themachinesignificantly.However,donotneglectgreasepointsthatarenotservedbythe automaticlubricationsystem.

GreaseRecommendations

GreaseshouldnotcontaingraphiteorPTFE.Usethecorrectgreaseintheautomaticlubrication system.

Theuseofapartiallyfluidgreasethatisabovethemaximumtemperaturethatisindicatedin Table1isnotpermitted.Useofapartiallyfluidgreasethatisabovethemaximumindicated temperaturecanleadtothefollowing.

Inspecttheconditionofthecablestothebatteriesandinspecttheconditionofthebatteries.

Note:Whenyoureplacethebatteries,alwaysusethesametypeofbattery.

Usethefollowingprocedureinordertoisolatethebatteriesifanyrepairsarenecessary.

1.TurntheenginestartswitchtotheOFFposition.TurnallswitchestotheOFFposition.

2.TurnthebatterydisconnectswitchtotheOFFposition.Removethekey.

3.Atthebatterydisconnectswitch,disconnectthenegativebatterycablethatisconnectedto theframe.

Note:Donotallowthedisconnectedbatterycabletocontactthedisconnectswitch.

4.Disconnectthenegativebatterycablefromtheterminalsofthebatteries.

5.Performthenecessaryrepairs.Replacethecablesorthebatteries,asneeded.

6.Connectthenegativebatterycabletotheterminalsofthebattery.

7.Connectthenegativebatterycableatthebatterydisconnectswitch.

8.Installthekeyforthebatterydisconnectswitch.TurnthekeytotheONposition.

3.Inspecttheconditionoftheserpentinebelt.Overtimethebeltribswilllosematerial(C). Thespacebetweentheribswillincrease(D).Thelossofmaterialwillcausethepulley sheavetocontactthebeltvalley.Thelossofmaterialwillleadtobeltslippageand acceleratedwear(E).Replacethebeltifthebeltiswornorfrayed.

4.Ifthebelt(1)requiresreplacement,performthefollowing:

a.Loosenfastenersforbeltguard(2),andremovebeltguard.

b.Insertasquaredriveontothebelttensioner(3).Turnclockwisetoreleasethetension fromthebeltandremovetheoldbelt.

c.Insertasquaredriveontothebelttensionerandturnclockwise.Installthenewbeltin thefollowingorder:drivepulley,airconditioningcompressorpulley,alternator pulley,andbelttensioner.

d.Installbeltguardandtightenfasteners.

5.Lowerthehood.RefertoOperationandMaintenanceManual,"HoodControl".
