1. Keep the engine speed low until the oil pressure indicator goes out. If the oil pressure indicator does not go out within 10 seconds, stop the engine and investigate.
2. Push the panel test switch, for the tractor and scraper, to the test position to test the indicators.
3. If the indicators do not come on, make any necessary repairs.
4. If any of the indicators stay on, have any necessary repairs made before operating the machine.
5. Look at the operator's panel frequently during operation. If any of the indicators come on, stop the machine, if necessary, and investigate.
627E Only
NOTICE
Do not operate the machine with front engine only. This is necessary to provide lubrication to the scraper transmission. Transmission damage can result if the machine is moved with the scraper engine stopped.
Operate the engines at LOW IDLE until the hydraulic oil is warm.
Test the hydraulic controls. Allow extra warm-up time if they are sluggish.
Be sure the scraper neutral-run switch (on 627E only) is in the run position, if scraper engine power will be required.
Keep the cab windows and door closed to reduce the noise level in the cab.
Be sure the area is clear of personnel and obstructions.
NOTE: Do not attempt to move the tractor-scraper without normal brake air pressure.
1. The retarder control lever should be in the UP position.
2. Apply the service brake.
3. Push the button in to release the parking/secondary brakes.
NOTICE
Be sure the button stays in to ensure brakes are released.
4. Raise the scraper bowl just high enough to clear any obstacles.
5. Release the transmission neutral lock. Move the range selector to the highest desired speed, in one quick motion.
6. Release the service brake pedal and depress the accelerator. On the 627E, push both accelerator pedals down simultaneously.
NOTE: If the machine does not move, move the transmission selector to neutral again, and then to the desired speed.
Never coast on a downgrade. Keep the transmission engaged.
7. Move the machine to an open area. Operate the brakes and the steering to check for proper function.

8. Stop the machine. Move the transmission control to reverse to check the operation of the back-up alarm.
9. Check the operation of all the hydraulic controls.
10. Lower the bowl and apply down pressure. Apply the parking/secondary brake.

Before Starting the Engine
Walk-Around Inspection
For maintenance and operator personnel safety and maximum service life of the machine, make a thorough walk-around inspection before mounting the machine or starting the engines.
Look around and under the machine for such items as loose or missing bolts, trash build-up, oil, coolant or fuel leaks. Inspect the condition and inflation of tires, condition of hydraulic lines and hoses, and condition of cutting edges.
Remove any trash and debris. Adjust tire inflation as needed. Have any necessary repairs made, loose connections or parts tightened and any missing parts replaced before starting the engine.
The bowl and apron must be lowered, and the ejector forward, the parking/secondary brake applied and the engine stopped.
1. Inspect cooling system, including the radiator core, for leaks, trash or dirt build-up.
2. Inspect radiator guard for trash or dirt build-up.
3. Inspect lights for broken bulbs and lenses. Check for loose or frayed wires.
4. Inspect hydraulic system for leaks. Check for loose hose connections. Check for frayed hoses.
5. Inspect transmission for leaks.
6. Inspect tires (front and rear) for damage and proper inflation.
7. Inspect engine compartment for leaks and trash build-up.
8. Inspect condition and cleanliness of steps and handholds.
9. Inspect differentials (front and rear) under machine for leaks.
10. Look for wear, damage, loose or missing bolts on cutting edges and router bits.
11. Inspect final drives (front and rear) for leaks.
12. Be sure covers and guards are firmly in place. Inspect for damage.
13. Check bail and push plate (627E only) for wear, loose or missing bolts or damage.
14. Inspect fire extinguisher (if equipped) for proper fill, check instruction plate.
15. Inspect air intake screen for accumulated debris or dirt build-up.
16. Inspect air cleaner indicator. Service the air intake screen and filters, if the indicator piston has locked in the RED position.
17. Inspect operator's comartment for cleanliness. Inspect instrument panel for broken gauges, indicators and switches.
18. Inspect the ROPS (Rollover Protective Structure) for cracks, loose, damaged or missing bolts. Replace damaged or missing bolts. Consult your Caterpillar dealer for repair of cracks in welds.
Observe the hydraulic oil level with the ejector forward. The level should be between the ADD and FULL marks in the sight gauge.
Check the tractor engine oil level. It should be between the "L" and the "F" marks on the ENGINE STOPPED side of the dipstick.
Check the tractor engine coolant level. Maintain the level above the indicator plate in the bottom of the fill pipe.
Check the tractor transmission oil. Maintain the oil level to the FULL mark in the sight gauge.
Check the tractor differential oil level. Maintain the oil level to the FULL mark in the sight gauge.
Check the fuel level. The tank should be full at the end of each shift.
Drain any moisture from the fuel tank. Open the drain valves on both sides of the machine and allow moisture to drain. Close the valves.
Drain the moisture from the tractor air reservoirs.
Drain moisture and sediment from the scraper air reservoir.
627E Only
Measure the scraper engine oil level. Maintain the oil level between the "L" and the "F" marks on the ENGINE STOPPED side of the dipstick.
Observe the scraper engine coolant level, maintain the level to the top of the level indicator plate.
Check the scraper transmission oil level. Maintain the oil level to the FULL mark in the sight gauge

Coolant, Fuel and Lubricant Specifications
Coolant Specifications

NOTICE
Use a mixture of water, ethylene glycol (antifreeze) and cooling system conditioner. Pure, undiluted antifreeze will freeze at -23°C (-10°F).
Do not use Caterpillar liquid cooling system conditioner or coolant conditioner elements with Dowtherm 209 Full-Fill coolant. Follow the instructions provided with the Dowtherm 209 Full-Fill coolant.
Refer to "Know Your Cooling System," Form SEBD0518, for more detailed specifications.
Water
Acceptable water for use in the ethylene glycol and water mixture is shown in the chart below:
Antifreeze
Use the correct amount of ethylene glycol mixed with water, to provide freeze protection to the lowest expected outside temperature.
Conditioner
NOTICE
Always add liquid cooling system conditioner to water, or install a coolant conditioner element (if equipped). Never use water only.
Never use both liquid cooling system conditioner and a coolant conditioner element (if equipped) at the same time.
Use Caterpillar liquid cooling system conditioner or a coolant conditioner element (if equipped). This will provide a 3% to 6% concentration of conditioner in the cooling system to help prevent corrosion
Conditioner can be purchased from your Caterpillar dealer.
Wheel Coolant Solution (WCS)
Use a 20% ethylene-glycol and 80% water mixture to make an acceptable wheel coolant solution.
