MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)maybeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenient servicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading.Recommendedservice shouldalwaysbeperformedattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Underextremelysevere,dustyorwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecified inthe"MaintenanceInterval"chartmaybenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,at"Every500Service Hoursor3Months",alsoservicethoseitemslistedunder"Every250ServiceHoursorMonthly", "Every50ServiceHoursorWeekly"and"Every10ServiceHoursorDaily."

GeneralHazardInformation

Attach"DONOTOPERATE"orsimilarwarningtagtostartswitchorcontrolsbeforeservicingor repairingthemachine.Thesetags,FormSEHS7332,areavailablefromyourCaterpillardealer.

Wearahardhat,protectiveglassesandotherprotectiveequipmentasrequiredbyjobconditions.

Donotwearlooseclothingorjewelrythatcancatchoncontrolsorotherpartsofthemachine.

Makecertainallprotectiveguardsandcoversaresecuredinplaceonthemachine.

Keepthemachine,especiallytheplatformdoorwaysandsteps,freeofforeignmaterial,suchas debris,oil,toolsandotheritemswhicharenotpartofthemachine.

Securealllooseitemssuchaslunchboxes,toolsandotheritemswhicharenotpartofthemachine.

Knowtheappropriatework-sitehandsignalsandwhogivesthem.Acceptsignalsfromoneperson only.

Neverputmaintenancefluidsintoglasscontainers.

Useallcleaningsolutionswithcare.

Reportallneededrepairs.

Donotallowunauthorizedpersonnelonthemachine.

PressureAir

Pressureaircancausepersonalinjury.Whenusingpressureairforcleaning,wearaprotectiveface shieldandprotectiveclothing.

Themaximumairpressuremustbebelow205kPa(30psi)forcleaningpurposes.

FluidPenetration

Alwaysuseaboardorcardboardwhencheckingforaleak.Escapingfluidunderpressure,evenapinholesizeleak,canpenetratebodytissue,causingseriousinjury,andpossibledeath.Iffluidisinjected intoyourskin,itmustberemovedsurgicallybyadoctorfamiliarwiththiskindofinjurywithinafew hours.

AsbestosInformation

Cautionshouldbeusedtoavoidbreathingdustthatmaybegeneratedwhenhandlingcomponents containingasbestosfibers.Ifthisdustisinhaled,itcanbehazardoustoyourhealth.Componentsin Caterpillarproductsthatmaycontainasbestosfibersarebrakepads,brakebandandlining assemblies,clutchplatesandsomegaskets.Theasbestosusedinthesecomponentsisusuallybound inaresinorsealedinsomeway.Normalhandlingisnothazardousaslongasairbornedustwhich containsasbestosisnotgenerated.

Ifdustwhichmaycontainasbestosispresent,thereareseveralcommonsenseguidelinesthatshould befollowed.

1.Neverusecompressedairforcleaning.

2.Avoidbrushingorgrindingofasbestoscontainingmaterials.

3.Forcleanup,usewetmethodsoravacuumequippedwithahighefficiencyparticulateair(HEPA) filter.

4.Useexhaustventilationonpermanentmachiningjobs.

5.Wearanapprovedrespiratorifthereisnootherwaytocontrolthedust.

6.Complywithapplicablerulesandregulationsfortheworkplace(forexampleintheU.S.A.,OSHA requirementsassetforthin29CFR1910.1001).

7.Followenvironmentalrulesandregulationsfordisposalofasbestos.

8.Avoidareaswhereasbestosparticlesmaybeintheair.

CrushingorCuttingPrevention

Supportloaderandbackhoebucketsandlinkagesproperlywhenworkingbeneaththem.Donot dependonhydrauliccylinderstoholdthemup.Anyimplementcanfallifacontrolismoved,ora hydrauliclinebreaks.

Neverattemptadjustmentswhilethemachineismovingortheengineisrunningunlessotherwise specified.

Wherethereareimplementlinkages,theclearanceinthelinkageareawillincreaseordecreasewith movementoftheimplement.

Stayclearofallrotatingandmovingparts.

Keepobjectsawayfrommovingfanblades.Theywillthroworcutanyobjectortoolthatfallsoris pushedintothem.

Donotuseakinkedorfrayedwireropecable.Weargloveswhenhandlingthewireropecable.

Retainerpins,whenstruckwithforce,canflyoutandinjurenearbypersons.Keeppersonnelaway fromarea.

Wearprotectiveglasseswhenstrikingaretainerpintoavoidinjurytoyoureyes.

Chipsorotherdebriscanflyoffobjectswhenstruck.Makesurenoonecanbeinjuredbyflying debrisbeforestrikinganyobject.

BurnPrevention

Coolant

Atoperatingtemperature,theenginecoolantishotandunderpressure.Theradiatorandalllinesto heatersortheenginecontainhotwaterorsteam.Anycontactcancausesevereburns.

Steamcancausepersonalinjury.

Checkthecoolantlevelonlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthefillercapiscoolenoughto removewithyourbarehand.

Removethecoolingsystemfillercapslowlytorelievepressure.

Coolingsystemconditionercontainsalkalithatcancausepersonalinjury.Avoidcontactwiththeskin andeyesanddonotdrink.

Allowcoolingsystemcomponentstocoolbeforedraining.

Oils

Hotoilandcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhotoilorcomponentstocontactthe skin.

Atoperatingtemperature,thehydraulictankishotandcanbeunderpressure.

Removethehydraulictankfillercaponlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthefillercapiscool enoughtoremovewithyourbarehand.

Removethehydraulictankfillercapslowlytorelievepressure.

Relieveallpressureinoil,fuelorcoolingsystemsbeforeanylines,fittingsorrelateditemsare disconnectedorremoved.

Batteries

Batteriesgiveoffflammablefumeswhichcanexplode.

Donotsmokewhenobservingthebatteryelectrolytelevels.

Electrolyteisanacidandcausepersonalinjuryifitcontactsskinoreyes.

Alwayswearprotectiveglasseswhenworkingwithbatteries.

FireorExplosionPrevention

Allfuels,mostlubricantsandsomecoolantmixturesareflammable.

Fuelleakedorspilledontohotsurfacesorelectricalcomponentscancauseafire.

Donotsmokewhilerefuelingorinarefuelingarea.

Donotsmokeinareaswherebatteriesarecharged,orwhereflammablematerialsarestored.

Batteriesinseriesmaybelocatedinseparatecompartments.Whenusingjumpercablesalways connectpositive(+)cabletopositive(+)terminalofbatteryconnectedtostartersolenoidand negative(-)cablefromexternalsourcetostarternegative(-)terminal.(Ifnotequippedwithstarter negativeterminal,connecttoengineblock.)

Seethe"OperationSection"ofthismanualforspecificjumpstartinginstructions.

Cleanandtightenallelectricalconnections.Checkdailyforlooseorfrayedelectricalwires.Haveall looseorfrayedelectricalwirestightened,repairedorreplacedbeforeoperatingthemachine.

Keepallfuelsandlubricantsstoredinproperlymarkedcontainers.Storeandlockthemawayfromall unauthorizedpersons.

Storealloilyragsorotherflammablematerialinaprotectivecontainer,inasafeplace.

Donotweldorflamecutonpipesortubesthatcontainflammablefluids.Cleanthemthoroughlywith nonflammablesolventbeforeweldingorflamecuttingonthem.

Removeallflammablematerialssuchasfuel,oilandotherdebrisbeforetheyaccumulateonthe machine.

Donotexposethemachinetoflames,burningbrush,etc.

Shields,whichprotecthotexhaustcomponentsfromoilorfuelsprayintheeventofaline,tubeor sealfailure,mustbeinstalledcorrectly.

Haveafireextinguisheravailableandknowhowtouseit.Inspectandhaveitservicedas recommendedonitsinstructionplate.

Ether

Etherispoisonousandflammable.

Breathingethervaporsorrepeatedcontactofetherwithskincancausepersonalinjury.

Useetheronlyinwellventilatedareas.

Donotsmokewhilechangingethercylinders.

Useetherwithcaretoavoidfires.

Donotstorereplacementethercylindersinlivingareasorintheoperator'scompartment.

Donotstoreethercylindersindirectsunlightorattemperaturesabove39°C(102°F).

Discardcylindersinasafecontainer.Donotpunctureorburncylinders.

Keepethercylindersoutofthereachofunauthorizedpersonnel.

Lines,TubesandHoses

Donotbendorstrikehighpressurelines.Donotinstallbentordamagedlines,tubesorhoses.

Repairanylooseordamagedfuelandoillines,tubesandhoses.Leakscancausefires.Contactyour Caterpillardealerforrepairorreplacement.

Inspectalllines,tubesandhosescarefully.Donotuseyourbarehandtocheckforleaks.Useaboard orcardboardtocheckforleaks.See"FluidPenetration"inthe"Safety"sectionformoredetails. Checkandtightenallconnectionstotherecommendedtorqueperiodically.Replaceifanyofthe followingconditionsarefound.

1.Endfittingsdamagedorleaking.

2.Outercoveringchafedorcutandwirereinforcingexposed.

3.Outercoveringballooninglocally.

4.Evidenceofkinkingorcrushingoftheflexiblepartofhose.

5.Armouringembeddedintheoutercover.

6.Endfittingsdisplaced.

Makesurethatallclamps,guardsandheatshields,areinstalledcorrectlytopreventvibration,rubbing againstotherpartsandexcessiveheatduringoperation.

Explosionsofair-inflatedmachinetireshaveresultedfromheat-inducedgascombustioninsidethe tires.Theheat,generatedbyweldingorheatingrimcomponentsorexternalfirecancausegaseous combustion.

Atireexplosionismuchmoreviolentthanablowout.Theexplosioncanpropelthetire,rimandfinal drivecomponentsasfaras500m(1500ft)ormorefromthemachine.Boththeforceoftheexplosion andtheflyingdebriscancausepersonalinjuryordeath,andpropertydamage.

Donotapproachatirecloserthantheoutsideofthearearepresentedbytheshadedareaintheabove drawing.

Standbehindthetreadanduseaself-attachingchuckwheninflatingatire.

Servicingandchangingtiresandrimscanbedangerousandshouldbedoneonlybytrainedpersonnel usingpropertoolsandprocedures.Ifcorrectproceduresarenotfollowedwhileservicingtiresand rims,theassembliescouldburstwithexplosiveforceandcauseseriouspersonalinjuryordeath. Followcarefullythespecificinformationprovidedbyyourtireorrimservicingmanordealer.

MountingandDismounting

Mountanddismountthemachineonlywherestepsand/orhandholdsareprovided.

Usebothhandsandfacethemachine,whenmountinganddismounting.Maintainathreepointhand and/orfeetcontactonmountinghardware.

Nevergetonoroffamovingmachine.Neverjumpoffthemachine.

Donottrytoclimbonoroffthemachinewhencarryingtoolsorsupplies.

BeforeStartingtheEngine

Starttheengineonlyfromtheoperator'sstation.Nevershortacrossthestarterterminalsoracrossthe batteries,asthiscouldbypasstheengineneutral-startsystemaswellasdamagetheelectricalsystem.

Inspecttheconditionoftheseatbeltandmountinghardware.Replaceanydamagedorwornparts. Replacetheseatbeltregardlessofappearanceafterthreeyearsofuse,becauseofdeteriorationof material.

Adjusttheseatsothatfullbrakepedaltravelcanbeobtainedwiththeoperator'sbackagainsttheseat back.

Makesurethepedallockbarisinlockedpositionabove1stgeartopreventsuddenturning.

Makesurethemachineisequippedwithalightingsystemasrequiredbyconditions.

Makesurealllightsareworkingproperly.

Checkforleaks,cracks,looseormissingbolts,tireormachinedamage.

Makesurenooneisworkingon,underneathorclosetothemachinebeforestartingtheengineor beginningtomovethemachine.Makesuretheareaisfreeofpersonnel.

EngineStarting

Donotstarttheengineormoveanyofthecontrolsifthereisa"DONOTOPERATE"orsimilar warningtagattachedtothestartswitchorcontrols.

MoveallimplementcontrolstotheHOLDpositionbeforestartingtheengine.

Engagetheparkingbrake.ShiftthetransmissioncontrolleverstoNEUTRALandengagethe Forward-Reverse(Neutral)lock.

Avoidpossibleinjuryordeathfromarunawaymachine.Starttheengineonlywhilefacingforward andseatedintheoperator'sseat.Turnseattobackhoeoperationafterstarting.

Startandoperatetheengineinawellventilatedareaonly.Inanenclosedarea,venttheexhausttothe outside.

BeforeOperatingtheMachine

Stabilizersmustbeinthecorrectposition,beforeoperatingthemachine.Raisestabilizerscompletely fortransportorforloaderoperation.Lowerstabilizersbeforeoperatingbackhoe.DONOTDIG UNDERTHESTABILIZERS.

Clearallpersonnelfromthemachineandthearea.Makesurepersonnelarenotinreachofbackhoeor inpathofloader.

Clearallobstaclesfromthepathofthemachine.Bewareofhazardssuchaswires,powerlines, ditches,etc.

Oncabequippedmachines,besureallwindowsareclean.Securethedoorsandwindowsineitherthe openorshutpositionwhileoperating.

Forbestvision,especiallyclosetothemachine,adjusttherearviewmirrors.

Makesurethemachinehorn,theback-upalarm(ifequipped)andallotherwarningdevicesare workingproperly.

Fastentheseatbeltsecurely.

Checkforproperoperationofallcontrolsandprotectivedeviceswhilemovingslowlyinanopen area.

MachineOperation

Whenoperatingthebackhoe,engagetheparkingbrake,puttransmissioninneutral,andENGAGE FORWARD-REVERSELOCK.

Operatethemachineonlywhileseated.

Operatethecontrolsonlywiththeenginerunningunlessservicingmachine.

Theoperatormustsatisfyhimselfthatnoonewillbeendangeredbeforemovingoroperatingthe machine.

Donotallowridersonthemachineunlessadditionalseat,seatbeltandRolloverProtectiveStructure (ROPS)areprovided.

Reportanyneededrepairsnotedduringoperation.

Carryloaderbucketclosetotheground.Backhoeshouldbeintransportposition.

Stayasafedistancefromtheedgeofcliffs,overhangsandslideareas.

Ifthemachinebeginstosidesliponagrade,immediatelydisposeoftheloadandturnthemachine downhill.

Avoidconditionswhichcouldleadtotippingwhenworkingonhills,banksorslopes,andwhen crossingditches,ridgesorotherobstructions.

Workupanddownslopes,ratherthansideways,wheneverpossible.

Keepthemachineundercontrolanddonotworkitoveritscapacity.

Besurehitchpointsandthetowingdeviceareadequate.

Connecttrailingequipmenttoadrawbarorhitchonly.

Neverstraddleawireropecableorsimilardevice,norallowotherstodoso.

Personnelshouldnotbebetweenthemachineandequipmentwhenmaneuveringtoconnectthem. Blockthetongueorhitchoftrailingequipmenttoalignitwiththedrawbarorhitch.

Knowthemaximumheightandreachofyourmachine.

AlwayskeeptheRolloverProtectiveStructure(ROPS)(ifequipped)installedwhenoperatingthe machine.

Donotoperatethemachineabove2ndgearwithaloadedbucket.

Donotnegotiateturnsathighermachinespeedswithaloadedbucketmorethan380mm(15in)off thegroundtoavoidpossibletipping.

Raisetheloaderbuckettomaximumheightonlyforloadingahaulingunit.

MachineParking

Parkonalevelsurfaceifpossible.Ifnecessarytoparkonagrade,blockthemachine.

Applytheservicebrakestostopthemachine.Engagetheparkingbrake.

ShiftthetransmissioncontrollevertoNEUTRAL.Applytheneutrallock.

Lowertheloaderbuckettothegroundandapplyslightdownpressure.

Putthebackhoeinthe"transportposition".Installtheswinglockpininbackhoe.

Stoptheengine.

TurnthestartswitchkeytotheOFFposition.

Personalinjuryordeathcouldresultwhentowingadisabledmachine incorrectly.

Blockthemachinetopreventmovementbeforereleasingthebrakes. Themachinecanrollfreeifitisnotblocked.

Besureallnecessaryrepairsandadjustmentshavebeenmadebeforea machinethathasbeentowedtoaservicearea,isputbackinto operation.

Followtherecommendationsbelow,toproperlyperformthetowing procedure.

NOTICE

Damagecanbecausedtothetransmissionifthemachineismovedwith theenginenotrunning.Therewillbenolubricationtothe transmissioncomponents.Disconnectandremovetheuniversaljoint beforethemachineismoved.

Thismachineisequippedwithmechanicallyappliedwetdiscbrakes.

Thesetowinginstructionsareformovingadisabledmachineashortdistance,atlowspeed,nofaster than2km/h(1.2mph)toaconvenientlocationforrepair.Theseinstructionsareforemergencies only.Alwayshaulthemachineiflongdistancemovingisrequired.

Shieldingmustbeprovidedonthetowingmachine,toprotecttheoperatorifthetowlineorbar shouldbreak.

Donotallowridersonthemachinebeingtowed.

TheoperatoronthetowedmachineMUSTsteerinthedirectionofthetowline.
