Operation

Theoperationsectionisareferenceforthenewoperatorandarefresherfortheexperienced operator.Thissectionincludesadiscussionofgauges,switches,machinecontrols,attachment controls,transportation,andtowinginformation.

Photographsandillustrationsguidetheoperatorthroughcorrectproceduresofchecking,starting, operating,andstoppingthemachine.

Operatingtechniquesoutlinedinthispublicationarebasic.Skillandtechniquesdevelopasthe operatorgainsknowledgeofthemachineanditscapabilities.

Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS) liststheitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsare listedunderthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhe pagenumberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance. UsetheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenance procedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, weekly,monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsifthecalendarintervals

providemoreconvenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeter reading.Performtherecommendedserviceattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Undersevere,dusty,orwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500 servicehoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursor monthlyandevery10servicehoursordaily.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairareessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavy-dutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsibleforthe performanceoftherequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenance Manual,andServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,ortorenderinoperative,anyemission-relateddevice orelementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewithall applicableregulationsoftheintendedcountrytowhichithasbeenshipped.Certainelementsof themachineandenginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeair system,andcoolingsystemmaybeemission-relatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedby Caterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcan adverselyaffectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertifications suchasbrakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerfor furtherinformation.

ProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Toprovideuniformequipmentidentification,constructionequipmentmanufacturers aremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentificationnumberingstandard. Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplytoall machinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN. Thenewformatwilllooklikethefollowing:

3.Disconnectthenegativebatterycableatthebattery.

4.Inspectthebatteryterminalsandinspectthebatterycables.Keeptheterminalscleanand keeptheterminalscoatedwithpetroleumjelly.

5.Performthenecessaryrepairs.Replacethecableorthebattery,asneeded.

6.Connectthenegativebatterycableatthebattery.

7.Connectthebatterycabletotheframeofthemachine.

8.Installtheenginestartswitchkey.

Ifnewbeltsareinstalled,checkbeltadjustmentafter30minutesofoperation.Formultiplebelt driveapplications,alwaysreplacethebeltsinmatchedsets.Replacingonlyonebeltofamatched setwillcausethenewbelttocarrymoreloadbecausetheolderbeltsarestretched.Theadditional loadonthenewbeltcouldcausethenewbelttobreak.

1.Installtheliftcylinderbrace.RefertoOperationandMaintenanceManual,"LiftCylinder Brace-ConnectandDisconnect"formoreinformation.

2.Removetheengineaccesspanelontheleftsideofthemachine.

3.Inspecttheconditionoftheairconditionerbeltandtheadjustmentoftheairconditioner belt.Theairconditionerbeltshoulddeflect10mm(0.38inch)under110N(25lb)offorce.

4.Loosentheadjustinglocknut(1).Loosenthetwocompressorbracketmountingbolts(2).

5.Movethecompressoruntilthecorrectbelttensionisreached.

6.Tightentheadjustinglocknut(1).Tightenthetwocompressorbracketmountingbolts(2).

7.Recheckthebeltdeflection.Iftheamountofdeflectionisincorrect,repeatStep4toStep6.

8.Installtheengineaccesspanel.

9.Removetheengineaccesspanelontherightsideofthemachine.

10.Inspecttheconditionofthealternatorbeltsandtheadjustmentofthealternatorbelts.The alternatorbeltsshoulddeflect10mm(0.38inch)under110N(25lb)offorce.

11.Loosenthemountingbolt(3).Loosentheadjustinglocknut(4).

12.Movethealternatoruntilthecorrecttensionisreached.

13.Tightentheadjustinglocknut(4).Tightenthemountingbolt(3).

14.Recheckthebeltdeflection.Iftheamountofdeflectionisincorrect,repeatStep11toStep 13.

15.Installtheengineaccesspanel.

16.Starttheengine.Raisetheloaderarmstothemaximumheight.

17.Removethepinandreplacethebracefortheloaderliftarmtothestoredpositiononthe loaderliftarm.

18.Lowerthebuckettotheground.

Thefollowingtestsareusedtodetermineiftheservicebrakeisfunctional.Thesetestsarenot intendedtomeasurethemaximumbrakeholdingeffort.Thebrakeholdingeffortthatisrequired tosustainamachineataspecificenginerpmvariesdependingonthemachine.Thevariationsare thedifferencesintheenginesetting,inthepowertrainefficiency,andinthebrakeholdingability, etc.

1.Starttheengine.Raisethebucketslightly.

2.Applytheservicebrake.Releasetheparkingbrake.

3.MovethetransmissioncontrollevertoTHIRDSPEEDFORWARD.

4.Graduallyincreasetheenginespeedtohighidle.Themachineshouldnotmove.

5.Reducetheenginespeedtolowidle.MovethetransmissiontoNEUTRAL.Engagethe parkingbrake.Lowerthebuckettotheground.Stoptheengine.

Ifthemachinebeginstomove,reducetheenginespeedimmediatelyand applytheservicebrakepedal.

5.Reducetheenginespeed.MovethetransmissiontoNEUTRAL.Lowerthebuckettothe ground.Stoptheengine.

NOTICE

Ifthemachinemovedwhiletestingthebrakes,contactyour Caterpillardealer.

Havethedealerinspectand,ifnecessary,repairtheparkingbrakes beforereturningthemachinetooperation.

1.Raisethebucket.Placeablockunderthebucket.

2.Lowerthebuckettotheblocking.

Donotblockupthebuckettoohigh.Blockupthebucketsothatthebucketishighenough toremovethecuttingedgesandtheendbits.

3.Removethebolts.Removethecuttingedgeandtheendbits.

4.Cleanthecontactsurfaces.

5.Usetheoppositesideofthecuttingedge,ifthissideisnotworn.

6.Installanewcuttingedge,ifbothedgesareworn.

7.Installthebolts.Tightentheboltstothespecifiedtorque.

8.Raisethebucket.Removetheblocks.

9.Lowerthebuckettotheground.

10.Afterafewhoursofoperation,checktheboltsforpropertorque.
