CatProductIdentificationNumber
EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theCatProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)willchangefrom8to 17characters.Inanefforttoprovideuniformequipmentidentification,Caterpillarandother constructionequipmentmanufacturersaremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproduct identificationnumberingstandard.Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.Thenew PINformatwillapplytoallCatmachinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarking willdisplaythe17characterPIN.Thenewformatwilllooklikethefollowing:

TheCCMmaybeconnecteddirectlytothehostequipment.TheCCMmayalsobeconnectedto theequipmentbyusingmodems.Theinitializationproceduredependsonthetypeofconnection. ThecorrectinitializationprocedureisnecessaryforpropercommunicationbetweentheCCMand theequipment.
WhenmodemsareinstalledbetweentheCCMandthehostequipment,thecomplexityofthe communicationnetworkisincreased.TheRS-232Cportsmustbesettotheproperparametersfor communicationonthefollowingequipment:hostequipment,modemsandCCM.Thephoneline portsofthemodemsmustbecompatible.Toconnectthemodems,consultthemanufacturer's instructions.

TheCCMhastheabilitytocommunicatewithamaximumofeightothercontrollers.Thenumberof availableconnectionswilldependonthetypeofdevicethatisbeingconnected.Generatorset applicationsarelimitedtoeightcontrollersthatcanbeconnectedtotheCCM.Marineapplications arelimitedtoamaximumofthreeconnections.
TheCCMidentifiesdifferentcontrollersonthedatalinkbytheModuleIdentifier(MID)ofthe controller.TheMIDisprogrammableinsomecases.RefertotheOperationsandMaintenance Manual,"EngineNumber-Program"formoredetailedinformationonprogrammingtheModule Identifiers.EachcontrollerthatisconnectedtotheCCMmusthaveauniqueMID.

•EMCPII(basicmodel)hasaprimarydatalinkforusewiththeCCM.Thisdatalinkiscalled theCATDataLink.TheCATDataLinkhasaprogrammableMID.Amaximumofeight differentvaluesmaybeusedfortheMID.
•EMCPII+hasthesameprimarydatalinkasEMCPII(CATDataLink)withaprogrammable valuefortheMID.TheEMCPII+alsohasasecondarydatalinkforusewiththeCCM.The CCMDataLinkhasaprogrammablevaluefortheMID.TheCATDataLinkandtheCCM DataLinkhaveeightMIDvalues.
•TheSecondaryCATDataLinkandtheCCMDataLinkcanbetreatedinthesamemanneron the3500BVersionDandtheEMCPII+applications.

1.TheCCMshouldbeinstalledwithallofthewiring.RefertoOperationsandMaintenance Manual,"GeneralWiringDiagram"and"RS-232CCableRequirements".
2.Determinetheparametersforcommunicationfortheinstallation.Thedefaultrateof communication(bitspersecondorbps)is9600.Theremainingdefaultsettingsfromthe factoryarenoparity,8databits,and1stopbit.Theseparameterswillworkwellinmost installations.UsetheOperationsandMaintenanceManual,"CommunicationParametersIdentify"todeterminetheparametersofcommunicationthatarestoredintheCCM.
3.LoadtheCCMPCForWindowssoftwareintothePC.Refertothe"CaterpillarCCMPC ForWindows:GettingStartedManual".StarttheCCMPCprogramandconnecttothe CCM.
4.GototheDataLinkpull-downmenu.SelectECM,CCM.GototheCCMconfiguration screenintheUtilitiesmenu.Settheparametersforcommunicationtomatchthevaluesthat werechoseninstep2.
5.UsetheCCMconfigurationscreentosettheConnectionTypetoDirectConnection.The CCMisnowsetatthedeterminedcommunicationconfiguration.

YoushouldfollowtheinstructionsinOperationsandMaintenanceManual,"Initializationfor DirectConnection"beforeyouconnectbyamodem.Theusercanverifyproperoperationofthe CCMatthelocation.TheusercanalsobecomefamiliarwiththeCCM.
Makesurethatthefollowingequipmentisavailable:
•Apersonalcomputerwithaterminalemulatorsoftwareprogram.Examplesofterminal emulatorsincludeProcomm,PC-VT,orTerminalundertheAccessorieswindowin MicrosoftWindows.Referto"CaterpillarCCMPCForWindows:GettingStartedManual" forspecificationsonthePC.Theuserisresponsibleforunderstandingtheoperationofthe PC.
•TheproperRS-232Ccablesarerequiredfortheparticularinstallation.AnRS-232Ccable mustbetemporarilyconnectedfromthePCtotheAnsweringModem.RefertoOperation andMaintenanceManual,"RS-232CCableRequirements".
•ThetwomodemsmustsupporttheHayesATcommandset.Thisisnecessaryforboththe AnsweringModemandtheOriginatingModem.
•TheCCMPCForWindowssoftwareisrequired.Thissoftwareisavailablefrom Caterpillar.
Note:Somepersonalcomputerswillhaveaninternalmodem.Theinternalmodemmaybeusedas theOriginatingModem.TheinternalmodemmustbecompatiblewiththeAnsweringModem. Consulttheinstructionsforthetwomodems.
Procedure
PerformthefollowingprocedureinordertoinitializecommunicationwiththeCCMandthe AnsweringModem.TheOriginatingModemissetuplaterbythePCsoftware.
Note:Inthefollowingsteps,thePCandthemodemsshouldbeturnedOFFbeforeyouchangethe cablesontheserialports.Whenpowerisreapplied,themodemmustbepoweredupfirst.
1.TheCCMshouldbeinstalledwithallofthewiring.RefertotheOperationsand MaintenanceManual,"GeneralWiringDiagram"and"RS-232CCableRequirements".
2.Determinetheparametersforcommunicationfortheinstallation.TheRS-232Cdefaultrate ofcommunication(bitspersecondorbps)is9600.Theremainingdefaultsettingsfromthe factoryarenoparity,8databits,and1stopbit.Theseparameterswillworkwellinmost installations.UsetheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"CommunicationParametersIdentify"todeterminetheparametersofcommunicationthatarestoredintheCCM.
Note:TheRS-232CserialportcommunicationbaudrateisoftenreferredtoastheDTE speed.ThephoneportcommunicationrateisoftenreferredtoastheDCEspeed.
3.ConnecttheRS-232CportoftheAnsweringModemdirectlytotheRS-232Cportofthe PC.Thisconnectionistemporary.ThisconnectionisrequiredtosetuptheAnswering Modem.
4.UsetheterminalemulatoronthePCtosettheparametersforcommunicationfortheRS232Cport.Usethesamevaluesthatwerechoseninstep2.
5.SeveralcommandsmustbesenttotheAnsweringModemthatsettheparametersfor communicationtothepropervalues.TheexamplesinTable1areHayesATcommands. Actualcommandsetsvarywidelybetweenmodemmanufacturers.Consultthemanualfor themodem.Savetheseparameterstothemodemmemory.

f SetDCDtotrackstatusofcarrierdetectsignal. ThiscausestheDCDlinefromthemodemto followthestateofthephonelinecarrier.When thecalltotheCCM'smodemhasbeenmadeand themodemtomodemhandshakingisdone,the DCDlinewillchangeandallowtheCCMto receivedata.
Note:Thisisveryimportant.IftheDCDlineis notattherightstate,theCCMcannotreceive data.
gSetDTRtomonitorDTRsignalandhangupand resetmodemonanon-to-offDTRtransition.This

SetDTRtransitionresponsedelaytomaximum valuelessthan10seconds.Thisexamplewould causethemodemtohanguptheline2.5seconds aftertheDTRlinefromtheCCMchanges.
Note:Refertoyourparticularmanual.Some modemsspecifythetimein1/100thofasecond, andsomein1/10thofasecond.

8.GototheDataLinkpull-downmenu.GototheUtilitiesmenuandselectCCM configuration.Setthecommunicationparameterstomatchthevaluesthatwerechosenin Step2.
9.GotothePhoneBookpull-downmenuandselectAddorEdit.Setthecommunication parametersofthePCtomatchthevaluesthatwerechoseninStep2.
10.Theelectronicenginecontrollerofeachenginemustbeprogrammedwiththecorrect enginenumbertoidentifyeachECMtotheCCM.Theelectronicenginecontrolleris programmedtoEngineNumber1atthefactory.RefertoOperationandMaintenance Manual,"EngineNumber-Program".
11.RemovepowerfromtheCCMbyremovingthewirethatisconnectedtothe+Bterminal. TurnoffthepowertotheModem.DisconnectthePCfromtheCCM.
12.ConnectthePC,themodems,andtheCCMasdesiredforthefinalsiteinstallation.Referto OperationandMaintenanceManual,"RS-232CCableRequirements".
