Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoenginecare.Theillustrated,step-by-stepinstructionsare groupedbyfuelconsumption,servicehoursand/orcalendartimemaintenanceintervals.Itemsin themaintenanceschedulearereferencedtodetailedinstructionsthatfollow.

Usefuelconsumptionorservicehourstodetermineintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, annually,etc.)maybeusedinsteadofservicemeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenient schedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicemeterreading.

Recommendedserviceshouldbeperformedattheappropriateintervalsasindicatedinthe MaintenanceIntervalSchedule.Theactualoperatingenvironmentoftheenginealsogovernsthe MaintenanceIntervalSchedule.Therefore,underextremelysevere,dusty,wetorfreezingcold operatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationandmaintenancethanisspecifiedinthe MaintenanceIntervalSchedulemaybenecessary.

Themaintenancescheduleitemsareorganizedforapreventivemaintenancemanagement program.Ifthepreventivemaintenanceprogramisfollowed,aperiodictune-upisnotrequired. Theimplementationofapreventivemaintenancemanagementprogramshouldminimize operatingcoststhroughcostavoidancesresultingfromreductionsinunscheduleddowntimeand failures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Performmaintenanceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Eachleveland/or individualitemsineachlevelshouldbeshiftedaheadorbackdependinguponyourspecific maintenancepractices,operationandapplication.Werecommendthatthemaintenanceschedules bereproducedanddisplayedneartheengineasaconvenientreminder.Wealsorecommendthata maintenancerecordbemaintainedaspartoftheengine'spermanentrecord.

SeethesectionintheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"MaintenanceRecords"forinformation regardingdocumentsthataregenerallyacceptedasproofofmaintenanceorrepair.Your authorizedCatdealercanassistyouinadjustingyourmaintenancescheduletomeettheneedsof youroperatingenvironment.

MajorengineoverhauldetailsarenotcoveredintheOperationandMaintenanceManualexcept fortheintervalandthemaintenanceitemsinthatinterval.Majorrepairsarebestlefttotrained personneloranauthorizedCatdealer.YourCatdealeroffersavarietyofoptionsregarding overhaulprograms.Ifyouexperienceamajorenginefailure,therearealsonumerousafterfailure overhauloptionsavailablefromyourCatdealer.Consultwithyourdealerforinformation regardingtheseoptions.

EmissionsWarranty

CaterpillarInc.,oranyofitssubsidiaries("Caterpillar")warrantstotheinitialownerandtothe subsequentownerofanew,certified,marinedieselengine(propulsionorauxiliary),thatsuchan engineis:

1.Designed,builtandequippedsoastoconform,atthetimeofsale,withallapplicable regulationsadoptedbytheUnitedStatesEnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA).

2.Freefromdefectsinmaterialsandworkmanshipforthefollowingperiods:

EmissionsWarranty

Followingthestandardwarrantyperiods,theemissionwarrantyperiod,outlinedbelow,wouldbe effective:

•60months,or5000hoursofoperation,whicheveroccursfirst,afterdateofdeliverytothe initialownerofaCategory1commercial[usedinrevenueproducingorgovernmental applications]marineengine.

•60months,or10000hoursofoperation,whicheveroccursfirst,afterdateofdeliverytothe initialownerofaCategory2commercial[usedinrevenueproducingorgovernmental applications]marineengine

•18months,or5000hoursofoperation,whicheveroccursfirst,afterdateofdeliverytothe initialownerofaCategory3commercial[usedinrevenueproducingorgovernmental applications]marineengine

Theengineiscertifiedifithasaspecialcertificationlabel.RefertoOperationandMaintenance Manual,"EmissionsWarrantyInformation"foranexampleofthefilm.ACaterpillardealercan alsoinformyouiftheengineiscertifiedandtowhichcategorytheengineiscertified.

Ifanemissionrelatedpartfailsduringthewarrantyperiod,thepartwillberepairedorreplaced. Anysuchpartrepairedorreplacedunderwarrantyiswarrantedfortheremainderofthewarranty period.

Thiswarrantycoversthefollowingemission-relatedpartsandcomponents:

•ExhaustAftertreatment(IfEquippedfromCaterpillar)

•FuelInjectionSystem

•InletManifold

•TurbochargerSystem

•ElectronicEngineControlSystem

•SeawaterAftercooler

•VariableValveActuationSystem

•Misc.hoses,clamps,connectorsandsealingdevicesusedintheabovesystems

Duringthetermofthiswarranty,CaterpillarInc.willprovidethroughaCaterpillardealerorother establishmentauthorizedbyit,repairorreplacementofanywarrantedpartatnochargetothe marinedieselengineowner.

LimitationsandResponsibilities

Thewarrantyissubjecttothefollowing:

CaterpillarResponsibilities

Ifadefectinmaterialorworkmanshipisfoundduringthestandardwarrantyperiod,emissions warrantyperiodorextendedwarrantyperiod,ifapplicable,Caterpillarwill,duringnormal workinghoursandthroughaplaceofbusinessofaCaterpillardealerorothersourceapprovedby Caterpillar:

•Provide(atCaterpillar'schoice)new,remanufacturedorrepairedpartsand/orassembled components,approvedpursuanttoEPARegulations,requiredtocorrectthedefect.

•Replacelubricatingoil,filters,antifreezeandotherserviceitemsmadeunusablebythe defect.

•Providereasonableorcustomarylabor,neededtocorrectthedefectincludinglaborto disconnecttheproductfromandreconnecttheproducttoitsattachedequipment,mounting, andsupportsystemsifrequired.For3034,3054,3056and3126enginesandanygenerator setsforusewithsuchenginesand/orbrandedtransmissions(includinganyproductsof othermanufacturerspackagedandsoldbyCaterpillar)duringthestandardorextended warrantyperiod,ifapplicable.

•Providetravellabor,uptosixhoursroundtripincludingreasonablemileage(perrepair),if, intheopinionofCaterpillar,theproductcannotreasonablybetransportedtoaplaceof businessofaCaterpillardealerorothersourceapprovedbyCaterpillar.(ForC1.1,C1.5, andC2.2marinegeneratorsetsduringthestandardwarrantyperiodonly).

•Providetravellabor,uptosixhoursroundtripincludingreasonablemileage(perrepair),if, intheopinionofCaterpillar,theproductcannotreasonablybetransportedtoaplaceof businessofaCaterpillardealerorothersourceapprovedbyCaterpillar.(Forallother productduringthestandardorextendedwarrantyperiod,ifapplicable).

•Providereasonabletravelexpensesforauthorizedmechanics,includingmeals,mileageand lodgingwhenCaterpillarchoosestomaketherepairon-site.

Note:ItemsreplacedunderwarrantybecomethepropertyofCaterpillar.

UserResponsibilities

Duringthestandard,extendedandemissionswarrantyperiod,theuserisresponsiblefor:

•Providingproofofthedeliverydatetothefirstuser.

•Premiumorovertimelaborcosts

•Laborandmaterialcostsforproductremovalandreinstallation,exceptasstatedunder "CaterpillarResponsibilities"

•Allcostsfortransportingtheproductorequipmentinwhichtheproductisinstalled.

•Travelexpensesnotcoveredunder"CaterpillarResponsibilities"

•Partsshippingchargesinexcessofthosewhichareusualandcustomary.

•Localtaxes,ifapplicable

•Coststoinvestigatecomplaints,unlesstheproblemiscausedbyadefectinCaterpillar materialorworkmanship.

•Givingtimelynoticeofawarrantablefailureandpromptlymakingtheproductavailablefor repair.

•Performanceoftherequiredmaintenanceanduseofproperfuel,oil,lubricantsandcoolant.

•Forelectronicallycontrolledengines,allowCaterpillaraccesstoallelectronicdatastoredin theElectronicControlModule.

Limitations

Caterpillarisnotresponsiblefor:

•FailuresresultingfromanyuseorinstallationwhichCaterpillarjudgesimproper.

•Failuresresultingfromattachments,accessoryitemsandpartsnotsoldnorapprovedby Caterpillar

•Failuresresultingfromabuse,neglectand/orimproperrepair.

•Failuresresultingfromuser'sdelayinmakingtheproductavailableafterbeingnotifiedofa potentialproductproblem.

•Failuresresultingfromunauthorizedrepairoradjustments,andunauthorizedfuel-setting changes.

•Damagetoparts,fixtures,housingsattachmentsandaccessoryitems,whicharenotpartof theengine(includinganyproductsofothermanufacturerspackagedandsoldby Caterpillar).

•RepairofcomponentssoldbyCaterpillarthatiswarranteddirectlytotheuserbytheir respectivemanufacturer.Dependingontypeofapplication,certainexclusionsmayapply. ConsultyourCaterpillardealerformoreinformation.

ThiswarrantyisinadditiontoCaterpillar'sstandardwarranty,applicabletothemarineengine productinvolved.

NEITHERTHEFOREGOINGEXPRESSWARRANTYNORANYOTHERWARRANTY BYCATERPILLAR,EXPRESSORIMPLIED,ISAPPLICABLETOANYITEM CATERPILLARSELLSWHICHISWARRANTEDDIRECTLYTOTHEUSERBYITS MANUFACTURER.

THISWARRANTYISEXPRESSLYINLIEUOFANYOTHERWARRANTIES, EXPRESSORIMPLIED,INCLUDINGANYWARRANTYOFMERCHANTABILITY ORFITNESSFORAPARTICULARPURPOSE.REMEDIESUNDERTHIS WARRANTYARELIMITEDTOTHEPROVISIONOFMATERIALANDSERVICES ORCONSEQUENTIALDAMAGES.CATERPILLAREXCLUDESALLLIABILITYFOR ORARISINGFROMANYNEGLIGENCEONITSPARTORONTHEPARTOFANY OFITSEMPLOYEES,AGENTSORREPRESENTATIVESINRESPECTOFTHE MANUFACTUREORSUPPLYOFGOODSORTHEPROVISIONOFSERVICES RELATINGTOTHEGOODS.

MaintenanceRecommendations

SomeCaterpillarmarinedieselenginesarecertifiedbytheUnitedStatesEnvironmental ProtectionAgency(EPA)tocomplywithgaseousandparticulateemissionstandardsthatare prescribedbyFederallawsatthetimeofmanufacture.

Theengineiscertifiedifithasaspecialcertificationlabel.Twotypesoflabelsthatareusedby Caterpillarareshownabove.ACaterpillardealercanalsoinformyouiftheengineiscertifiedand towhichcategorytheengineiscertified.

Efficiencyoftheemissioncontrolandtheengineperformancedependsonadherencetoproper operationandmaintenancerecommendationsANDuseofrecommendedfuelsandlubricatingoils. Itisrecommendedthatmajoradjustmentsandrepairsshouldbeperformedbyyourauthorized Caterpillardealer.

Thecorrectivestepstakenimmediatelyondiscoverywornparts,whichmayaffectemission levels,willhelpassuretheproperoperationoftheemissioncontrolsystems.Theuseofgenuine Caterpillarpartsisrecommended.Suppliersofnon-Caterpillarpartsmustensuretheownerthat theuseofsuchpartswillnotadverselyaffectemissionlevels.

Regularmaintenanceintervalswithaspecialemphasisonthefollowingitemsarenecessaryin ordertokeepexhaustemissionswithinacceptablelimitsfortheusefullifeoftheengine.Referto theOperationandMaintenanceManual,"SevereServiceApplication-Check"topic(Maintenance Section).Iftheengineisoperatingundersevereconditions,adjustthemaintenanceschedule accordingly.SeeyourauthorizedCaterpillardealerinordertohelpanalyzeyourspecific application,operatingenvironmentandmaintenancescheduleadjustments.

Thefollowinginformationisanexplanationofmaintenanceitemsforemissionrelated components.SeetheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"MaintenanceInterval Schedule"(MaintenanceSection)forthespecificintervalforthefollowingitems.

UNITINJECTORS

-Unitinjectorsaresubjecttotipwearasaresultoffuelcontamination.This damagecancausethefollowingconditions:anincreaseinfuelconsumption,blacksmoke,misfire androughrunningengine.Theunitinjectorshouldbeinspected,testedandreplaced,ifnecessary. UnitinjectorscanbetestedbyanauthorizedCaterpillarmarineenginedealer.

TURBOCHARGER

-Checkforanyunusualsoundorvibrationintheturbocharger.Inspectthe inletpipingandconnectionsandinspecttheexhaustpipingandconnections.Checkthecondition ofthebearing.PerformthemaintenancethatisdescribedintheOperationandMaintenance Manual,"MaintenanceIntervalSchedule"(MaintenanceSection).

ELECTRONICENGINECONTROL

-Thiscomponentisadevicethatisdesignedtocontrol engineoperationwithrespecttotheamountoffuelinjected,theinjectiontimingaswellas controllingtheblacksmokeemissionofanengineduringtheengine'soperationwhenlowinlet manifoldpressureexists.Anyerraticenginebehaviormayindicateaneedforadjustmentor repair.YourCaterpillardealerisequippedwiththenecessarytools,personnelandproceduresin ordertoperformthisservice.

Theownerisencouragedtokeepadequatemaintenancerecords.However,theabsenceofsuch recordswillnotinvalidatethewarranty.RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManual, "MaintenanceLog"(ReferenceMaterialsSection).

Thevehicleownermayperformroutinemaintenance,repairsandotherworkthatisoutsideofthe warranty.Theworkmaybedoneatanyrepairfacility.Suchworkdoesnotneedtobeperformed atadesignatedstationthatisdeterminedbythewarrantyinorderforthewarrantytoremainin force.

WarningSignsandLabels

Theremaybeseveralspecificsafetysignsonyourengine.Pleasetakethetimetofamiliarize yourselfwiththesafetysigns.

Makesurethatyoucanreadallsafetysigns.Cleanorreplacetheseifyoucannotreadthewords orseethepictures.Whencleaningthelabelsuseacloth,waterandsoap.Donotusesolvents, gasoline,etc.,tocleansafetysigns.Theuseofsolvents,gasoline,etc.,couldloosenthesign's adhesiveandcausethesigntofalloff.

Youmustreplacealabelifitisdamaged,missingorcannotberead.Ifalabelisattachedtoapart, andthatpartisreplaced,makesureanewlabelisinstalledonthereplacedpart.Seeyour Caterpillardealerfornewlabels.

Donotoperateorworkontheengineunlessyouhavereadandunderstandtheinstructionsand warningsinthisManual.Failuretofollowtheinstructionsorheedthewarningscouldresultin injuryordeath.ContactyourCaterpillardealerforreplacementmanuals.Propercareisyour responsibility.

AttachaDONOTOPERATEorsimilarwarningtagtostartswitchorcontrolsbefore performingmaintenanceorrepairingtheengine.Thesetags,SEHS7332,areavailablefromyour Caterpillardealer.Whenappropriate,attachtagsattheengineandateachpilotpositionand disconnectstartingcontrols.

Donotallowunauthorizedpersonnelonoraroundtheenginewhenitisbeingserviced.

Usecautionwhenremovingventreleasevalve,greasefittings,pressuretaps,breathersordrain plugs.Holdaragoverthecaporplugtopreventbeingsprayedorsplashedbyliquidsunder pressure.

*Wearahardhat,protectiveglasses,hearingprotectionandotherprotectiveequipmentas requiredbyjobconditions.

*Donotwearlooseclothingorjewelrythatcancatchoncontrolsorotherpartsofthe engine.

*Makecertainallprotectiveguardsandcoversaresecuredinplace.

*Useallcleaningsolutionswithcare.

*Neverputmaintenancefluidsintoglasscontainerssinceglasscontainerscanbreak.

*Reportallneededrepairs.

*Stoptheengine.

*Donotattemptanyrepairsoradjustmentstotheengineordrivenequipmentwhileitis running.

*Donotattemptrepairsyoudonotunderstand.

*Ensuretheprotectivelocksorcontrolsareintheappliedposition.

*Disconnectthebatterieswheneverperforminganymaintenanceorbeforeservicingthe electricalsystem.Iftheenginehaselectricstarters,disconnectandtapethebatteryground leadstopreventaccidentalstarting.

*Donotattemptrepairsyoudonotunderstand.Usepropertools;replaceorrepairbroken ordamagedequipment.

*Whenstartinganengineafterrepairshavebeenmadetothefuelsystemorgovernor, makeprovisionsforshuttingofftheengine'sinletairand/orfuelsupply(tostoptheengine), incasethereisanoverspeedonstart-up.

*Starttheengineonlyfromthepilothouse.Nevershortacrossthestarterterminalsorthe batteriesasthiscouldbypasstheengineneutral-startsystemaswellasdamagetheelectrical system.

PressureAirandWater

Pressureaircancausepersonalinjury.Whenusingpressureairforcleaning,wearaprotective faceshield,protectiveclothingandprotectiveshoes.

Themaximumairpressuremustbebelow200kPa(30psi)forcleaningpurposes.

Weareyeprotectionatalltimeswhencleaningthecoolingsystem.Pressurizedwatercouldcause debrisand/orhotwatertobeblownandresultinpersonalinjury.

FluidPenetration

Alwaysuseaboardorcardboardwhencheckingforaleak.Escapingfluidunderpressure,evena pin-holesizeleak,canpenetratebodytissue,causingseriousinjuryorpossibledeath.

Iffluidisinjectedintoyourskin,itmustbetreatedbyadoctorfamiliarwiththistypeofinjury immediately.

AsbestosInformation

YourCaterpillarengineandreplacementpartsshippedfromthefactoryareasbestosfree. CaterpillarrecommendstheuseofONLYgenuineCaterpillarparts.Ifanyreplacementparts containingasbestosareused,thefollowingguidelinesshouldbeusedinhandlingthesepartsand asbestosdebris.

Cautionshouldbeusedtoavoidbreathingdustthatmaybegeneratedwhenhandlingcomponents containingasbestosfibers.Ifthisdustisinhaled,itcanbehazardoustoyourhealth.

Theasbestosusedincomponentsisusuallyboundinaresinorsealedinsomeway.Normal handlingisnothazardousaslongasairbornedustwhichcontainsasbestosisnotgenerated. Ifdust,whichmaycontainasbestosispresent,thereareseveralcommonsenseguidelinesthat shouldbefollowed.

*Neverusecompressedairforcleaning.

*Avoidbrushingorgrindingofasbestoscontainingmaterials.

*Forcleanup,usewetmethodsoravacuumequippedwithahighefficiencyparticulateair (HEPA)filter.

*Useexhaustventilationonpermanentmachiningjobs.

*Wearanapprovedrespiratorifthereisnootherwaytocontrolthedust.

*Complywithapplicablerulesandregulationsfortheworkplace.(Forexampleinthe U.S.A.,OSHArequirementsassetforthin29CFR1910.1001).

*Followenvironmentalrulesandregulationsfordisposalofasbestos.

*Avoidareaswhereairborneasbestosparticlesmaybepresent.

Lines,TubesandHoses

Donotbendorstrikehighpressurelines.Donotinstallbentordamagedlines,tubesorhoses.

Repairanylooseordamagedfuelandoillines,tubesandhoses.Leakscancausefires.

Inspectalllines,tubesandhosescarefully.Donotuseyourbarehandstocheckforleaks.Tighten allconnectionstotherecommendedtorque.

Checkforthefollowing:

*Endfittingsdamaged,leakingordisplaced.

*Outercoveringchafedorcutandwirereinforcingexposed.

*Outercoveringballooninglocally.

*Evidenceofkinkingorcrushingoftheflexiblepartofthehose.

*Armoringembeddedintheoutercover.

BurnPrevention

Donottouchanypartofanoperatingengine.Allowtheenginetocoolbeforeanyrepairor maintenanceisperformedontheengine.

Makesurethatallclamps,guardsandheatshieldsareinstalledcorrectlytopreventvibration, rubbingagainstotherpartsandexcessiveheatduringoperation.

Relieveallpressureinair,oil,fuelorcoolingsystemsbeforeanylines,fittingsorrelateditemsare disconnectedorremoved.

Coolant

Atoperatingtemperature,theenginecoolantishotandunderpressure.Thecoolingsystemandall linestoheatersortheenginecontainhotwater.Whenpressureisrelievedrapidly,thishotwater canturnintosteam.

Allowcoolingsystemcomponentstocoolbeforedraining.Anycontactwithhotwaterorsteam cancausesevereburns.Checkthecoolantlevelonlyaftertheenginehasbeenstoppedandthe ventreleasevalveiscoolenoughtoremovewithyourbarehand.

Removethecoolingsystemventreleasevalveslowlytorelievepressure.Usecautionwhen removingventreleasevalve,greasefittings,pressuretaps,breathersordrainplugs.Holdarag overthecaporplugtopreventbeingsprayedorsplashedbyliquidsunderpressure.

Donotstepuponenginetoremovethecoolingsystemfillercaporventreleasevalve,if applicable.Aserviceplatformshouldbeprovidedoruseanadequateladder.

Coolingsystemadditive(conditioner)containsalkali.Topreventpersonalinjury,avoidcontact withtheskinandeyesanddonotdrink.

Oils

Hotoilandcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhotoilorcomponentstocontact theskin.

Keepallexhaustmanifoldandturbochargershieldsinplacetoprotecthotexhaustfromoilspray intheeventofaline,tubeorsealfailure.

Batteries

Alwayswearprotectiveglasseswhenworkingwithbatteries.Batteryelectrolytecontainsacidand cancauseinjury.Avoidcontactwiththeskinandeyes.

Washhandsaftertouchingbatteriesandconnectors.Useofglovesisrecommended.

Donotsmokewhenobservingthebatteryelectrolytelevels.Batteriesgiveoffflammablefumes whichcanexplode.Ensurethereisproperventilationforbatterieswhicharelocatedinan enclosure.

Neverdisconnectanychargingunitcircuitorbatterycircuitcablefromthebatterywhencharging unitisoperating.Asparkcancausetheflammablevapormixtureofhydrogenandoxygento explode.

FireorExplosionPrevention

Firemayresultfromlubricatingoilorfuelsprayedonhotsurfacescausingpersonalinjuryand propertydamage.Inspectalllinesandtubesforwearordeterioration.Theymustberouted, supportedorclampedsecurely.Tightenallconnectionstotherecommendedtorque.leakscan causefires.

Determinewhethertheenginewillbeoperatedinanenvironmentinwhichcombustiblegases couldbedrawnthroughtheairinletsystem.Thesegasescouldcausetheenginetooverspeed, whichinturncouldseriouslydamagetheengineandresultinbodilyinjuryorpropertydamage.

Ifyourapplicationinvolvesthepresenceofcombustiblegases,consultyourCaterpillardealerto obtainadditionalinformationconcerningprotectiondevicessuitablefortheapplicationinvolved.

Allfuels,mostlubricantsandsomecoolantmixturesareflammable.Dieselfuelisflammable. Gasolineisflammable.Themixtureofdieselandgasolinefumesareextremelyexplosive.

Donotsmokewhilerefuelingorinarefuelingarea.

Donotsmokeinareaswherebatteriesarecharged,orwhereflammablematerialsarestored.

Alwaysthawafrozenbatterybeforejumpstarting.Frozenbatteriesmayexplode.Batteriesgive offflammablefumeswhichcanexplode.

Keepallfuelsandlubricantsstoredinproperlymarkedcontainersandawayfromallunauthorized persons.

Storealloilyragsorotherflammablematerialinaprotectivecontainer,inasafeplace.

Donotweldorflamecutonpipesortubesthatcontainflammablefluids.Cleanthemthoroughly withnonflammablesolventbeforeweldingorflamecuttingonthem.

Removeallflammablematerialssuchasfuel,oilandotherdebrisbeforetheyaccumulateonthe engine.

Exhaustshields(ifequipped),whichprotecthotexhaustcomponentsfromoilorfuelsprayinthe eventofaline,tubeorsealfailure,mustbeinstalledcorrectly.

Provideadequateandproperwasteoildisposal.Oilandfuelfiltersmustbeproperlyinstalledand housingcoverstightenedtopropertorquewhenbeingchanged.

Batteriesmustbekeptclean,coverskeptonallcells,recommendedcablesandconnectionsused andbatteryboxcoverskeptinplacewhenoperating.

Whenstartingfromanexternalsource,alwaysconnectthepositive(+)jumpercabletothe POSITIVE(+)terminalofthebatteryoftheenginetobestarted.

Topreventpotentialsparksfromignitingcombustiblegasesproducedbysomebatteries,attach thenegative(-)boostgroundcablelast,tothestarterNEGATIVE(-)terminal(ifequipped)orto theengineblock.SeetheOperationSectionofthismanualforspecificstartinginstructions.

Cleanandtightenallelectricalconnections.Checkregularlyforlooseorfrayedelectricalwires. Refertomaintenanceschedulesforinterval.Havealllooseorfrayedelectricalwirestightened, repairedorreplacedbeforeoperatingtheengine.

Wiringmustbekeptingoodcondition,properlyroutedandfirmlyattached.Routinelyinspect wiringforwearordet%rioration.Loose,unattached,orunnec%ssarywiringmustbeeliminated.All wiresandcablesmustbeoftherecommendedgaugeandfusedifnecessary.Donotusesmaller gaugewireorbypassfuses.Tightconnections,recommendedwiringandcablesproperlycaredfor willhelppreventarcingorsparkingwhichcouldcauseafire.

FireExtinguisher

Haveafireextinguisheravailableandknowhowtouseit.Inspectandhaveitservicedas recommendedonitsinstructionplate.

CrushingorCuttingPrevention

Supportequipmentandattachmentsproperlywhenworkingbeneaththem.

Neverattemptadjustmentswhiletheengineisrunningunlessotherwisespecifiedinthismanual.

Stayclearofallrotatingandmovingparts.Guardsshouldbeinplacewhenevermaintenanceis notbeingperformed.

Wearprotectiveglasseswhenstrikingobjectstoavoidinjurytoyoureyes.

Chipsorotherdebriscanflyoffobjectswhenstruck.Makesurenoonecanbeinjuredbyflying debrisbeforestrikinganyobject.

MountingandDismounting

Donotclimbon,orjumpoff,theengineorstandoncomponentswhichcannotsupportyour weight.Alwaysusestepsandhandholdswhenmountinganddismounting.

Cleansteps,handholdsandplatformareasoftheengineyouwillbeworkingonoraround.

BeforeStartingtheEngine

Inspectengineforpotentialhazards.

Besureallprotectiveguardsandcoversareinstalledifanenginemustbestartedtomake adjustmentsorchecks.Tohelppreventanaccidentcausedbypartsinrotation,workcarefully aroundthem.

Donotdisableorbypassautomaticalarmcircuits.Theyareprovidedtopreventpersonalinjury andenginedamage.

Makeprovisionsforshuttingofftheairorfuelsupplytostoptheengineifthereisanoverspeed onstart-upafterperformingrepairormaintenancetotheengine.

SeetheMaintenancesectionofthismanualforadjustment,ortheServiceManualforrepairs.

EngineStarting

Donotstarttheengineormoveanyofthecontrolsifthereisawarningtagattachedtothe controls.Checkwiththepersonwhoattachedthetagbeforestarting.

Makesurenooneisworkingon,orclosetotheengineorenginedrivencomponentsbefore startingit.Alwaysmakeaninspectionoftheengineinstallationbeforeandafterstarting.

Dieselengineexhaustcontainsproductsofcombustionwhichmaybeharmfultoyourhealth. Alwaysstartandoperatetheengineinawell-ventilatedareaand,ifinanenclosedarea,ventthe exhausttotheoutsideandbesureventingsystemsarecorrectlyinstalledandoperating.

Starttheengineonlyfromthepilothouse.Nevershortacrosstheelectricstartingmotorterminals orthebatteries,asthiscouldbypasstheengineneutral-startsystemaswellasdamagethe electricalsystem.

AlwaysstarttheengineaccordingtotherequiredEngineStartingproceduredescribedinthis manualtopreventmajorenginecomponentdamageandpersonalinjury.

Checkthejacketwaterandoiltemperaturegaugesfrequentlyduringtheoperationofjacketwater and/orlubeoilheaterstoensureproperoperation.

StartingAids

Etherandotherstartingaidsarepoisonousandflammable.Donotsmokewhilechangingether cylinders.Useetheronlyinwellventilatedareas.

Keepethercylindersoutofthereachofunauthorizedpersons.Discardcylindersinasafeplace. Donotpunctureorburncylinders.

Donotstorereplacementethercylindersintheenginecompartment.Donotstoreethercylinders indirectsunlightorattemperaturesabove39°C(102°F).

EngineStopping

StoptheengineaccordingtotheEngineStoppinginstructionsintheOperationSectiontoavoid overheatingandacceleratedwearoftheenginecomponents.

OnlyusetheEmergencyStopPushbuttoninanemergencysituation.DONOTstarttheengine untiltheproblemnecessitatingtheemergencystophasbeenlocatedandcorrected.

Oninitialstartuporafteroverhaul,bepreparedtoSTOPtheengineshouldanoverspeedcondition occur.Thismaybeaccomplishedbycuttingthefuelandairsupplytotheengine.
