HighPressureSideofPump

If,afterprimingthelowpressuresystem,theenginewillnotstart,orrunsroughafterstarting,the highpressurefuellinesmustbeprimed.

Eachinjectionpumphasareverseflowcheckvalve.Thesecannotbeopenedwithhandpriming pumppressure.Usethefollowingproceduretoprimethehighpressurefuellines:

1.LOOSENeachoftheFUELLINENUTS,atthecylinderheadend,1/2turn.

2.Toremoveairintheinjectionlines,movethegovernorlevertoLOWIDLE.Cranktheengine.

3.Whenthefuelflowsfreelywithoutbubbles,tightennuts.Torqueto40.8±7N·m(30±5lb.ft.).

Usewithcaretoavoidfires.

Donotstorereplacementethercylindersinlivingareasorinoperator's compartment-keepoutofthereachofchildren.

Avoidbreathingofvaporsorrepeatedcontactwithskin.

Donotstorecylindersattemperaturesabove49°C(120°F).

Donotusecylindersinenvironmentsabove93°C(200°F).

Donotstorecylindersindirectsunlight.

Donotpunctureorburncylinders.

Discardcylindersinasafeplace.

1.Loosenclamp(1)andUNSCREWtheETHERCYLINDER(2).

2.Removetheusedgasketandinstallthenewgasketprovidedwitheachnewcylinder.

3.Installthenewcylinder.UseCaterpillarpartnumber7N296asareplacementcylinder.Tightenthe cylinderhandtight.Refastenthecylinderclampsecurelyaroundthecylinder.

7.PushinandrotateSTART-RUNswitchtoSTART.

8.RELEASEswitchwhenenginestarts.SwitchwillreturntoRUNposition.

Donotcrankengineformorethan30seconds.Allowtwominutesfor startertocoolbeforecrankingagain.

1.Repeatsteps1thru7inAbove0°C(32°F).

2.Whilecrankingtheengine,pushSTARTINGFLUIDCONTROLSWITCH(ifequipped)and releaseit.Ifnotequipped,spraystartingfluid,sparingly,intotheengineairinlet.Repeatuntilengine starts.

3.Aftertheenginestarts,continuetoaddstartingfluidevery2secondsuntiltheengineruns smoothly.

PrimingtheFuelSystem FiltersandPumpHousing

1.Openthebleedvalveonthepumphousing.

2.Unscrewthehandprimingpumpplungeruntilitcanbepulledoutbyhand.

3.Movetheplungerinandoutuntilfuelflows,freeofairbubbles,fromthebleedvalve.

4.Closethebleedvalve.

5.Pushtheplungerinandtightenbyhand.

6.Starttheengineandcheckforleaks.

InjectionPumpsandLines

Theinjectionpumpsandhighpressurelinesmustbeprimediftheenginewillnotstart,orruns rough,afterprimingthefiltersandpumphousing.

Eachinjectionpumphasareverseflowcheckvalve.Thesecannotbeopenedwithhandpriming pumppressure.Usethefollowingproceduretoprimetheinjectionpumpsandlines.

NOTICE

Thefuelinjectionnozzlescanbepermanentlydamagedbytwistingif onlyonewrenchisusedtoloosenortightenthefuellinenuts.Useone wrenchtoholdthenozzleandanothertoloosenthenut.

1.Looseneachofthefuellinenutsatthecylinderheadend.

2.Cranktheenginewiththestartingmotoruntilfuelflows,freeofairbubbles,fromeachofthe injectionlines.Stopcrankingtheengine.

3.Tighteneachofthefuellinenutstoatorqueof41+7N·m(30+5lb.ft.).Useasecondwrench onthenozzletopreventdamagetoit.

4.Starttheengineandcheckforleaks.

ServicingFuelFilters

Theprimaryfuelfiltershouldbecleaned,andthesecondary(main)fuelfilterelementreplaced,as follows:

1.Whenthefuelpressuregauge(ifequipped)indicateslowfuelpressure.

2.Whentheenginehasanoticablelossofpower.

3.Every500servicehoursofoperationiftheengineisnotequippedwithafuelpressuregauge.

Fuelleakedorspilledontohotsurfacesorelectricalcomponentscan causeafire.

Disconnectthebattery(turndisconnectswitchOFF)whenchanging fuelfilters.

NOTICE

Donotfillfuelfilterswithfuelbeforeinstallingthem.Contaminated fuelwillcauseacceleratedweartofuelsystemparts.

Closethefuelsupplyvalveatthetankbeforeservicingfilters.Openthevalveafterfilterservicing iscompleted.

CleaningPrimaryFilter

1.Loosenthenut(1)onthefiltercoverandlowerthefiltercase(3).

2.Removetheelement(2).Washthecoverandelementincleannonflammablesolvent.

3.Reinstalltheelement.

4.Installtheelementandcaseontothecoverintothecase.

5.Tightenthebolt.

ChangingSecondaryFilter

1.Unscrewfilterelement.Throwawaytheusedelement.

2.Makecertainalloftheusedelementsealiscleanedfromthefilterbase.

3.Coatthesealofthenewelementwithcleandieselfuel.

4.Installthefilterbyhand.Whenthesealcontactsthebase,tighten3/4turnmore. Therearerotationmarks90°apartonthefilter.Usetheseasaguideforpropertightening.

5.Starttheengineandcheckforleaks.Iftheenginewillnotstart,primethefuelsystem.

2.Trytostartenginewithoutether.Ifitdoesnotstart,thenuseether.

3.Whilecrankingtheengine,spraystartingfluid(ether)sparingly,intotheengineairinletorpush thestartingaidcontrolswitchandholdforthreeseconds(timerequiredtofillchamber).Etheris injectedwhenaidswitchisreleased.

Useadditionalstartingfluidonceeverytwosecondsuntilenginerunssmoothly.

Ifoilpressuredoesnotregisterwithin15seconds,stoptheengineimmediatelytoprevent damage.

4.Donotapplyloadtotheengineorincreaseenginespeeduntiloilpressureandalltemperature gaugesreachoperatingtemperature.Checkallgaugesduringthewarm-upperiod.

Forstartingbelow-18°C(0°F),useofoptionalcoldweatherstartingaidsarerecommended.A coolantheaterorextrabatterycapacitymayberequired.

Temperaturesbelow-23°C(-10°F),consultyourCaterpillardealerorrefertothe"ColdWeather OperationGuide,"FormSEBU5338,availablefromyourCaterpillardealer.

Donotcranktheengineformorethan30seconds.Allow2minutesfor thestartertocoolbeforecrankingagain.

5.Releasethestartswitchorairstartknobwhentheenginestarts.Ifoilpressuredoesnotregister within15seconds,stoptheengineimmediatelytopreventdamage.

6.Donotapplyloadtotheengineorincreaseenginespeeduntiloilpressureandalltemperature gaugesreachoperatingtemperature.Checkallgaugesduringthewarm-upperiod.

StoppingtheEngine

Beforestoppingtheengine,operateitatlowidlefor5minutes.Thisprocedureallowshotareasin theenginetocoolgradually,extendingtheenginelife.Italsoallowstheturbocharger(if equipped)toslowdown,sothatitwillnotcontinuetoturnwithoutlubrication.

Tostoptheengine,useoneofthemethodsfollowingthatappliestotheshutoffsystemonyour engine.

1.TurnthekeytotheOFFposition,or

2.Pulloutthemanualshutoffcontrol,or

3.Movethegovernorcontrollever(throttle)pastthedetenttotheFUEL-OFFposition.

Makesuretheshutoffprocedureisunderstood.Refertotheoperatinginstructionssuppliedwith yourequipment.
