RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManualforyourenginetodetermineallmaintenance requirements.
MaintenanceIntervals
UsetheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleintheOperationandMaintenanceManualforyourengine todetermineservicingintervals.Theactualoperatingenvironmentoftheenginealsogovernsthe maintenanceintervalschedule.Therefore,underextremelysevere,dusty,wetorfreezingcold operatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationandmaintenancethanisspecifiedinthe MaintenanceIntervalSchedulemaybenecessary.

ExtendedEngineOilDrainsandWarranty
FailuresthatresultfromextendedoildrainperiodsarenotCaterpillarfactorydefectsandtherefore arenotcoveredbyCaterpillar'swarranty.Inaddition,failuresthatresultfromnotusingthe recommendedoiltypearenotCaterpillarfactorydefectsandthereforearenotcoveredby Caterpillar'swarranty.
RefertotheapplicableOperationandMaintenanceManualforstandardoildrainperiodsandto theMaintenanceSection,"LubricantSpecifications"ofthispublicationforengineoiltypeand viscositygraderecommendations.
Toreducethepotentialriskoffailuresassociatedwithextendedoildrainperiods;itis recommendedthatoildrainintervalsonlybeextendedbasedonoilanalysis,andsubsequent engineinspections.Oilanalysisalonedoesnotprovideanindicationoftherateofformationof lacquer,varnishand/orcarbononpistonsandotherenginesurfaces.Theonlyaccuratewayto evaluatespecificoilperformanceinaspecificengineandapplicationthatutilizesextendedoil drainperiodsistoobservetheeffectsontheenginecomponents.Thisinvolvestear-down inspectionsofenginesthathaveruntotheirnormaloverhaulperiodwithextendedoildrain intervals.Followingthisrecommendationwillhelpensurethatexcessivecomponentweardoes nottakeplaceinagivenapplication.
NOTICE
Lightloads,lowhouraccumulation,andexcessiveidlingtimecan contributetoexcessivewaterinthecrankcaseoil.Corrosivedamage, pistondepositsandincreasedoilconsumptioncanalsoresult.Ifoil analysisisnotdoneortheresultsareignored,thepotentialfor corrosivedamageandpistondepositsincreases.Refertothe appropriateOperationandMaintenanceManualforguidance.

AftermarketProductsandWarranty
NOTICE
Whenauxiliarydevices,accessoriesorconsumables(filters,oil, additives,catalysts,fuel,etc.)madebyothermanufacturersareused onCaterpillarproducts,theCaterpillarwarrantyisnotaffected simplybecauseofsuchuse.Failuresthatresultfromtheinstallationor usageofothermanufacturersauxiliarydevices,accessoriesor consumables,however,arenotCaterpillarfactorydefectsand thereforeareNOTcoveredbyCaterpillar'swarranty.
Caterpillarisnotinapositiontoevaluatethemanyauxiliarydevices, accessoriesorconsumablespromotedbyothermanufacturersand
theireffectonCaterpillarproducts.Installationoruseofsuchitemsis atthediscretionofthecustomerwhoassumesALLrisksfortheeffects thatresultfromthisusage.

CatfluidshavebeendevelopedandtestedbyCaterpillarinordertoincreasetheperformanceof CatcomponentsandthelifeofCatcomponents.Thequalityoffinishedoilisdependentonthe qualityofthebasestock,thequalityoftheadditivesandthecompatibilityofthebasestockand additives.Catfluidsareformulatedofhighqualityrefinedoilbasestocksandadditivesofoptimal chemistryandquantitytoprovidehighperformanceinenginesandmachinecomponents.Cat fluidsareusedforfactoryfillofCatenginesandcomponentsandareofferedbyCaterpillar dealersforservicefillsandasaftermarketproducts.ConsultyourCaterpillardealerformore informationontheseCatfluids.

ItisstronglyrecommendedthatCatDEO-ULSbeusedinmodelyear2007andnewer(United StatesEnvironmentalProtectionAgency(U.S.EPA)2007certified)Caton-highway,andother aftertreatment-equippedCatdieselengines,andinCatEUROIVdieselengines.CatDEO-ULS limitsthesulfatedashintheoilto1percentorless,whichhelpsmaintaintheexpected aftertreatmentperformance.UseofoilsotherthanCatDEO-ULSinaftertreatment-equipped enginesmaynegativelyimpactperformanceoftheaftertreatmentdevices,maycausetheneedfor morefrequentDieselParticulateFilter(DPF)cleaningcyclesandmaycontributetoDPF plugging.
TypicalaftertreatmentsystemsincludeDieselParticulateFilter(DPF),DieselOxidationCatalysts (DOC),SelectiveCatalyticReduction(SCR),and/orLeanNOxTraps(LNT).Othersystemsmay apply.

CatDEO-ULSandCatDEOmultigradeoilsareavailableinvariousviscositygradesthatinclude SAE10W-30,SAE15W-40,andSAE5W-40.RefertoTable1fordetails.Multigradeoils providethecorrectviscosityforabroadrangeofoperatingtemperatures.
Multigradeoilsareeffectiveinmaintaininglowoilconsumptionandlowlevelsofpistondeposits.
CatDEO-ULSmultigradeandCatDEOmultigradeoilscanbeusedinothermanufacturer'sdiesel enginesandingasolineengines.Seetheenginemanufacturer'sliteraturefortherecommended categories/specifications.Comparethecategories/specificationstothespecificationsofCatDEOULSmultigradeandCatDEOmultigradeoils.ThecurrentindustrystandardsforCatDEO-ULS multigradeandCatDEOmultigradeoilsarelistedontheproductlabelsandonthedatasheetsfor theproduct.

CaterpillardevelopedtheEngineCrankcaseFluid(ECF)specificationstoensuretheavailability ofhighperformancecommercialdieselengineoilsinordertoprovidesatisfactorylifeand performanceinCatdieselengineswhererecommendedforuse.
TherearethreecurrentCatECFspecifications:CatECF-1-a,CatECF-2andCatECF-3.Referto table2inthisSpecialPublication.EachhigherCatECFspecificationprovidesincreased performanceoverlowerCatECFspecifications.Forexample,CatECF-3provideshigher performancethanCatECF-2andCatECF-3providesmuchhigherperformancethanCatECF-1a.

SelectingtheViscosity
Ambienttemperatureisthetemperatureoftheairintheimmediatevicinityoftheengine.This maydifferduetotheengineapplicationfromthegenericambienttemperatureforageographic region.Whenselectingtheproperoilviscosityforuse,reviewboththeregionalambient temperatureandthepotentialambienttemperatureforagivenengineapplication.Generally,use thehighertemperatureasthecriterionfortheselectionoftheoilviscosity.Generally,usethe highestoilviscositythatisallowedfortheambienttemperaturewhenyoustarttheengine.Refer tothe"LubricantViscositiesforAmbientTemperatures"tablesandtheassociatedfootnotesfor guidance.Inarcticapplications,thepreferredmethodsaretouseaheatedenclosure,orproperly sizedengineheatersandahigherviscositygradeoil.Thermostaticallycontrolledheatersthat circulatetheoilarepreferred.
Theproperoilviscositygradeisdeterminedbytheminimumambientairtemperature(theairin theimmediatevicinityoftheengine).Thisisthetemperaturewhentheengineisstartedandwhile theengineisoperated.Inordertodeterminetheproperoilviscositygrade,refertothe"Min" columninthetable.Thisinformationreflectsthecoldestambienttemperatureconditionfor startingacoldengineandforoperatingacoldengine.Refertothe"Max"columninthetablein ordertoselecttheoilviscositygradeforoperatingtheengineatthehighesttemperaturethatis anticipated.Unlessspecifiedotherwiseinthe"LubricantViscositiesforAmbientTemperatures" Table,usethehighestoilviscositythatisallowedfortheambienttemperaturewhenyoustartthe engine.

Beforeattemptingtostarttheengine,makesurethattheoilintheengineisfluidenoughtoflow. Checktheoilbyremovingthedipstick.Iftheoilwilldripfromthedipstick,thentheoilshouldbe fluidenoughtoallowtheenginetostart.Donotuseoilthathasbeendilutedwithkerosene. Kerosenewillevaporateintheengine.andcausetheoiltothicken.Kerosenewillcauseswelling andsofteningofthesiliconeseals.Kerosenewilldilutetheoiladditives.Dilutionoftheoil additiveswillreducetheperformance,andreducetheengineprotectionthattheadditivesprovide.
Iftheviscosityoftheoilischangedforcolderweather,alsochangethefilterelement.Ifthefilter isnotchanged,thefilterelementandthefilterhousingcanbecomeasolidmass.Afteryouchange theoil,operatetheengineinordertocirculatethethinneroil.
Whenyoustartacold-soakedengineorwhenyouoperateanengineinambienttemperaturesthat arebelow-18°C(0°F),usebaseoilsthatcanflowinlowtemperatures.Thesemultigradeoilshave lubricantviscositygradeofSAE0WorofSAE5W.AnexampleofviscositygradeisSAE5W40.
Whenyoustartacold-soakedengineorwhenyouoperateanengineinambienttemperaturesthat arebelow-30°C(-22°F),usesyntheticbasestockmultigradeoil.Theoilshouldhavealubricant viscositygradeofSAE0WorSAE5W.Useoilwithapourpointthatislowerthan-40°C(-40° F).
Note:Usethehighestoilviscositygradethatisallowedfortheambienttemperaturewhenyou starttheengine.Ifadifferentoilviscositygradeisspecifiedinthetable,usetheviscositygrade thatisspecifiedinthetable.Inarcticapplications,thepreferredmethodoflubricationisto
useaproperlysizedenginecompartmentheaterandahigherviscositygradeoil.Refertothe "LubricantViscosities"articleinthisSpecialPublicationforfurtherdetails.

•Syntheticbaseoilshaveimprovedoxidationstabilityespeciallyathighoperating temperatures.
Somesyntheticbaseoilshaveperformancecharacteristicsthatenhancetheservicelifeoftheoil. However,Caterpillardoesnotrecommendautomaticallyextendingtheoildrainintervalforany machinecompartmentforanytypeofoil,whethersyntheticornon-synthetic.
OildrainintervalsforCaterpillardieselenginescanonlybeadjustedafteranoilanalysisprogram thatcontainsthefollowingdata:
