Safety

Thissafetysectionlistsbasicsafetyprecautions.Inaddition,thissectionidentifieshazardous, warningsituations.Readandunderstandthebasicprecautionslistedinthesafetysectionbefore operatingorperforminglubrication,maintenanceandrepaironthisproduct.

Operation

Operatingtechniquesoutlinedinthismanualarebasic.Theyassistwithdevelopingtheskillsand techniquesrequiredtooperatetheenginemoreefficientlyandeconomically.Skillandtechniques developastheoperatorgainsknowledgeoftheengineanditscapabilities.

Theoperationsectionisareferenceforoperators.Photographsandillustrationsguidetheoperator throughproceduresofinspecting,starting,operatingandstoppingtheengine.Thissectionalso includesadiscussionofelectronicdiagnosticinformation.

Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoenginecare.Theillustrated,step-by-stepinstructionsare groupedbyfuelconsumption,servicehoursand/orcalendartimemaintenanceintervals.Itemsinthe maintenanceschedulearereferencedtodetailedinstructionsthatfollow.

Usefuelconsumptionorservicehourstodetermineintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, annually,etc.)maybeusedinsteadofservicemeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenient schedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicemeterreading.

Recommendedserviceshouldbeperformedattheappropriateintervalsasindicatedinthe MaintenanceIntervalSchedule.Theactualoperatingenvironmentoftheenginealsogovernsthe MaintenanceIntervalSchedule.Therefore,underextremelysevere,dusty,wetorfreezingcold operatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationandmaintenancethanisspecifiedintheMaintenance IntervalSchedulemaybenecessary.

Themaintenancescheduleitemsareorganizedforapreventivemaintenancemanagementprogram.If thepreventivemaintenanceprogramisfollowed,aperiodictune-upisnotrequired.The implementationofapreventivemaintenancemanagementprogramshouldminimizeoperatingcosts throughcostavoidancesresultingfromreductionsinunscheduleddowntimeandfailures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Performmaintenanceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Eachleveland/orindividual itemsineachlevelshouldbeshiftedaheadorbackdependinguponyourspecificmaintenance practices,operationandapplication.Werecommendthatthemaintenanceschedulesbereproduced anddisplayedneartheengineasaconvenientreminder.Wealsorecommendthatamaintenance recordbemaintainedaspartoftheengine'spermanentrecord.

SeethesectionintheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"MaintenanceRecords"forinformation regardingdocumentsthataregenerallyacceptedasproofofmaintenanceorrepair.Yourauthorized Catdealercanassistyouinadjustingyourmaintenancescheduletomeettheneedsofyouroperating environment.

Overhaul

MajorengineoverhauldetailsarenotcoveredintheOperationandMaintenanceManualexceptfor theintervalandthemaintenanceitemsinthatinterval.Majorrepairsarebestlefttotrainedpersonnel oranauthorizedCatdealer.YourCatdealeroffersavarietyofoptionsregardingoverhaulprograms. Ifyouexperienceamajorenginefailure,therearealsonumerousafterfailureoverhauloptions availablefromyourCatdealer.Consultwithyourdealerforinformationregardingtheseoptions.

CaliforniaProposition65Warning

DieselengineexhaustandsomeofitsconstituentsareknowntotheStateofCaliforniatocause cancer,birthdefects,andotherreproductiveharm.

Batteryposts,terminalsandrelatedaccessoriescontainleadandleadcompounds.Washhandsafter handling.

AfterStartingEngine

Note:Intemperaturesfrom0to60°C(32to140°F),thewarm-uptimeisapproximatelythree minutes.Intemperaturesbelow0°C(32°F),additionalwarm-uptimemayberequired.

Note:Ensurethattheselftestforthemonitoringsystem(ifequipped)iscompletedbefore operatingtheengineunderload.

Whentheengineidlesduringwarm-up,observethefollowingconditions:

•Checkforanyfluidorforanyairleaksatidlerpmandatone-halffullrpm(noloadonthe engine)beforeoperatingtheengineunderload.Thisisnotpossibleinsomeapplications.

•Operatetheengineatlowidleuntilallsystemsachieveoperatingtemperatures.Checkall gaugesduringthewarm-upperiod.

Note:Gaugereadingsshouldbeobservedandthedatashouldberecordedfrequentlywhilethe engineisoperating.Comparingthedataovertimewillhelptodeterminenormalreadingsforeach gauge.Comparingdataovertimewillalsohelpdetectabnormaloperatingdevelopments. Significantchangesinthereadingsshouldbeinvestigated.

•Checkthecrankcaseoillevel.Maintaintheoillevelbetweenthe"ADD"markandthe "FULL"markontheoillevelgauge.

•Ifnecessary,performminoradjustments.Repairanyleaksandtightenanyloosebolts.

•Notetheservicehourmeterreading.PerformthemaintenancethatisintheOperationand MaintenanceManual,"MaintenanceIntervalSchedule".

•Fillthefueltankinordertohelppreventaccumulationofmoistureinthefuel.Donot overfillthefueltank.

NOTICE

Onlyuseantifreeze/coolantmixturesrecommendedintheCoolant SpecificationsthatareintheOperationandMaintenanceManual. Failuretodosocancauseenginedamage.

•Allowtheenginetocool.Checkthecoolantlevel.Maintainthecoolingsystemat13mm (0.5inch)fromthebottomofthepipeforfilling.

•Iffreezingtemperaturesareexpected,checkthecoolantforproperantifreezeprotection. Thecoolingsystemmustbeprotectedagainstfreezingtothelowestexpectedoutside temperature.Addthepropercoolant/watermixture,ifnecessary.

•Performallrequiredperiodicmaintenanceonalldrivenequipment.Thismaintenanceis outlinedintheinstructionsfromtheOEM.

BeforeStartingEngine

SMCS-1000;1400;1450

Performtherequireddailymaintenanceandotherperiodicmaintenancebeforetheengineis started.Inspecttheenginecompartment.Thisinspectioncanhelppreventmajorrepairsatalater date.RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManualformoreinformation.

•Forthemaximumservicelifeoftheengine,makeathoroughinspectionbeforestartingthe engine.Lookforthefollowingitems:oilleaks,coolantleaks,looseboltsandtrashbuildup. Removetrashbuildupandarrangeforrepairs,asneeded.

•Inspectthecoolingsystemhosesforcracksandforlooseclamps.

•Inspectthealternatorandaccessorydrivebeltsforcracks,breaks,andotherdamage.

•Inspectthewiringforlooseconnectionsandforwornwiresorfrayedwires.

•Checkthefuelsupply.Drainwaterfromthewaterseparator(ifequipped).Openthefuel supplyvalve.

NOTICE

Allvalvesinthefuelreturnlinemustbeopenbeforeandduringengine operationtohelppreventhighfuelpressure.Highfuelpressuremay causefilterhousingfailureorotherdamage.

Iftheenginehasnotbeenstartedforseveralweeks,fuelmayhavedrainedfromthefuelsystem. Airmayhaveenteredthefilterhousing.Also,whenfuelfiltershavebeenchanged,someairspace willbeleftinthehousing.Intheseinstances,primethefuelsystem.RefertotheOperationand MaintenanceManual,"FuelSystem-Prime"formoreinformationonprimingthefuelsystem.

Engineexhaustcontainsproductsofcombustionwhichmaybeharmful toyourhealth.Alwaysstartandoperatetheengineinawellventilated areaand,ifinanenclosedarea,venttheexhausttotheoutside.

•Donotstarttheengineormoveanyofthecontrolsifthereisa"DONOTOPERATE" warningtagorsimilarwarningtagattachedtothestartswitchortothecontrols.

•Ensurethattheareasaroundtherotatingpartsareclear.

•Alloftheguardsmustbeputinplace.Checkfordamagedguardsorformissingguards. Repairanydamagedguards.Replacedamagedguardsand/ormissingguards.

•Disconnectanybatterychargersthatarenotprotectedagainstthehighcurrentdrainthatis createdwhentheelectricstartingmotor(ifequipped)isengaged.Checkelectricalcables andcheckthebatteryforpoorconnectionsandforcorrosion.

•Resetalloftheshutoffsoralarmcomponents.

•Checktheenginelubricationoillevel.Maintaintheoillevelbetweenthe"ADD"markand the"FULL"markontheoillevelgauge.

•Checkthecoolantlevel.Observethecoolantlevelinthecoolantrecoverytank(if equipped).Maintainthecoolantleveltothe"FULL"markonthecoolantrecoverytank.

•Iftheengineisnotequippedwithacoolantrecoverytankmaintainthecoolantlevelwithin 13mm(0.5inch)ofthebottomofthefillerpipe.Iftheengineisequippedwithasight glass,maintainthecoolantlevelinthesightglass.

•Observetheaircleanerserviceindicator(ifequipped).Servicetheaircleanerwhenthe yellowdiaphragmenterstheredzone,orwhentheredpistonlocksinthevisibleposition.

•Ensurethatanydrivenequipmenthasbeendisengaged.Removeanyelectricalloads.

StartingtheEngines,OperatingtheEngines,andStopping theEnginesthatareEquippedwithControlPanels

Forinformationregardingthegeneratorcontrolpanelthatisused,refertotheOperationand MaintenanceManualthatisforthegeneratorandthecontrolpanel.

ColdWeatherStarting

SMCS-1000;1250;1450;1453;1456;1900

RefertotheServiceManualforyourtypeofcontrols.Usethefollowingproceduretostartthe engine.

DONOTUSEETHER(startingfluids)unlessspecificallyinstructedto doso.IftheengineisequippedwithanAirInletHeater(electricallyor fuelignitedmanifoldheater),DONOTuseether(startingfluids)atany time.Theusecouldresultinenginedamageand/orpersonalinjury.

Anairinletheaterisinstalledintheairinletmanifold.Theairinletheaterisanelectricaldevice whichignitesacontrolledamountoffuelinordertoprovideheatedinletairforcoldweather starting.

Note:Startabilitywillbeimprovedattemperaturesbelow16°C(60°F)bytheuseoftheairinlet heater.Thiswillhelpreducewhitesmokeandmisfireduringstart-upincoldweather.

Startabilitywillbeimprovedattemperaturesbelow-18°C(0°F)fromtheuseofacylinderblock coolantheaterorextrabatterycapacity.

WhenNo.2dieselfuelisused,thefollowingitemsprovideameansofminimizingstarting problemsandfuelproblemsincoldweather:startingaids,engineoilpanheaters,enginecoolant heaters,fuelheatersandfuellineinsulation.

Fortemperaturesbelow-23°C(-10°F),consultyourCaterpillardealer.

1.TurntheignitionswitchtotheRUNposition.Advancethethrottleinordertosupplyfuelto theengine.

Whenanairinletheaterisused,advancethethrottleinordertosupplythemaximumfuelto theengine.

NOTICE

Donotengagethestartingmotorwhenflywheelisturning.Donotstart theengineunderload.

Iftheenginefailstostartwithin30seconds,releasethestarterswitch orbuttonandwaittwominutestoallowthestartingmotortocool beforeattemptingtostarttheengineagain.

2.Whenanairinletheaterisused,turntheignitionswitchtotheHEATposition.Maintainthe HEATpositionfor15seconds.TurntheignitionswitchtotheHEAT-STARTpositionin ordertocranktheengine.Iftheenginefailstostart,turntheignitionswitchtotheHEAT positionfor10seconds.TurntheignitionswitchtotheHEAT-STARTpositioninorderto cranktheengine.

AllowtheignitionswitchtoreturntotheRUNpositionassoonastheenginestarts.

NOTICE

Oilpressureshouldrisewithin15secondsaftertheenginestarts.Do notincreaseenginespeeduntiltheoilpressuregaugeindicatesnormal. Ifoilpressureisnotindicatedonthegaugewithin15seconds,DO NOToperatetheengine.STOPtheengine,investigateandcorrectthe cause.

3.Movethethrottletoapproximatelyonequarteroftheenginerpm.

4.Allowtheenginetoidleforthreetofiveminutes,orallowtheenginetoidleuntilthewater temperatureindicatorbeginstorise.Theengineshouldrunatlowidlesmoothlyuntilspeed isgraduallyincreasedtohighidle.Allowthewhitesmoketodispersebeforeproceeding withnormaloperation.

Tominimizewhitesmokeforcoldweatherstarting,starttheengineandallowtheengineto idlefor30seconds.Increasetherpmuntiltheenginespeedreaches1200rpm.Returnthe enginetolowidlerpm.

EmergencyshutoffcontrolsareforEMERGENCYuseONLY.DO NOTuseemergencyshutoffdevicesorcontrolsfornormalstopping procedure.

Ensurethatanysystemthatprovidesexternalsupporttotheengineissecuredaftertheengineis stopped.

NOTICE

Donotstarttheengineuntiltheproblemnecessitatingtheemergency stophasbeenlocatedandcorrected.

PressingtheEmergencyStopButtonmaycauseunburnedgastoremainintheairinletandinthe exhaustmanifold.

Unburnedgasintheairinletandexhaustsystemmayignitewhenthe engineisstarted.Personalinjuryand/orpropertydamagemayresult.

Beforestartinganenginethatmaycontainunburnedgas,purgethe unburnedgasfromtheairinletandexhaustsystem.Refertothetopic onpurgingunburnedgasinthe"StartingtheEngine"section.

EmergencyStopButton

Typicalemergencystopbutton

Forthejunctionbox,theemergencystopbuttonisintheOUTpositionfornormalengine operation.Foranemergencystop,pushtheemergencystopbutton.Thebuttonmustbereset beforetheenginecanbestarted.

Toresetthebutton,turnthebuttonclockwise.Thespring-loadedbuttonwillreturntotheOUT position.

EngagingtheDrivenEquipment

SMCS-1000

Iftheloadvaries,oriftheloadiscyclic,thegovernorwilladjusttheenginerpm,asneeded.

Extendedoperationatlowidleorextendedoperationatareducedloadmaycauseincreasedoil consumptionandcarbonbuildupinthecylinders.Thiscarbonbuildupresultsinalossofpower and/orpoorperformance.Whentheengineisoperatedatareducedload,theengineshouldbe fullyloadedateveryfourhoursinordertoburnexcesscarbonfromthecylinders.

IndustrialEngines

1.Ensurethattheenginegaugesregisterinthenormalrangeswhentheengineisoperatingat theratedrpmbeforeengagingthedrivenequipment.

2.Engagethedrivenequipment.Beginoperatingtheengineatlowload.Checkthegaugesand checktheequipmentforproperoperation.Checkthegaugesandchecktheequipment frequentlywhiletheengineisoperatingunderload.

GeneratorSetEngines

1.Ensurethattheenginegaugesregisterinthenormalrangeswhentheengineisoperatingat theratedrpm.

2.Adjustthevoltageandadjustthefrequency.Closethemaincircuitbreakerinordertoapply theloadtothegeneratorset.Adjustthevoltageandadjustthefrequencyinorderto compensatefortheload,asneeded.

EngineOperation-HydrocarbonMitigation

SMCS-1000

Properoperationandmaintenancearekeyfactorsinobtainingthemaximumlifeandeconomyof theengine.IfthedirectionsintheOperationandMaintenanceManualarefollowed,costscanbe minimizedandengineservicelifecanbemaximized.

Thetimethatisneededfortheenginetoreachnormaloperatingtemperaturecanbelessthanthe timetakenforawalk-aroundinspectionoftheengine.

Theenginecanbeoperatedattheratedrpmaftertheengineisstartedandaftertheenginereaches operatingtemperature.Theenginewillreachnormaloperatingtempe2aturesoonerduringalow enginespeed(rpm)andduringalow-powerdemand.Thisprocedureismoreeffectivethanidling theengineatnoload.Theengineshouldreachoperatingtemperatureinafewminutes.

Gaugereadingsshouldbeobservedandthedatashouldberecordedfrequentlywhiletheengineis operating.Comparingthedataovertimewillhelptodeterminenormalreadingsforeachgauge. Comparingdataovertimewillalsohelpdetectabnormaloperatingdevelopments.Significant changesinthereadingsshouldbeinvestigated.

HydrocarbonMitigation

ThehydrocarbonmitigationisafeaturetoprotecttheDOCagainsttemperaturesbelow325°C (617°F).Temperaturesbelowthisrangecandamagetheaftertreatmentofthemachine.Theinitial occurrencedisplaysasawarningandtheniftemperaturesdonotincreasebytheoperatoror strategy,themachinewillgointoshutdown.Messagesappearsequentiallyasfollows:

•First:Keycycletowarning

•Secondary:Warningtoshutdown

Ifthewarningmessagesarenotacknowledged,thentheshutdowncounterbegins.Oncethe enginehasshutdownforlowexhausttemperatures,the173-18EngineExhaustManifold#1 Temperature#1:Low-ModerateSeverity(2)willreturnuntiltheenginehassuccessfullyreached targettemperatures.

Onceexhausttemperaturesbelow325°C(617°F)areobservedforanhour,theHydrocarbon Mitigationfeaturebeginsandthefollowingconditionsbelowbecomeactive.

CylinderCutoutStrategy

Thecylindercutoutstartsat1000rpm.Thehydrocarbonmitigationmonitorstheexhaustand intaketargettemperaturesandincreasesspeediftemperaturesarenotachievedinintervals.The intervalsare20minutesandwith200rpmincrements.Thespeedrangeforthestrategyis1000 rpmto1800rpmwithaminimumruntimeof100minutes.

Note:Thisstrategyonlyrunsinnon-workmode.

Thestrategysuccesscriteriaisbasedonthefollowing:

•Intakeairmanifoldtemperatureover10°C(50°F)

•Exhaustmanifoldtemperatureover325°C(617°F)

Ifsuccessful,themachinewillcontinuetorunindefinitelyatthecurrentrpmuntiltakenoutof non-workmode.

ExhaustTemperatureLowCodeActions

Oncethe173-18EngineExhaustManifold#1Temperature#1:Low-ModerateSeverity(2) warningmessageisshown,therearetwoactionsthecanbetakentoremovethem:

Non-WorkMode

PutthemachineinNon-Workmode.

•ThiswillallowHydrocarbonMitigationtostartautomaticallyandattempttoachievethe targettemperaturesfortheintakeandexhaust.

•Ifthestrategydoesnotachievetargettemperatures,theenginewillreturntolowidlefor60 minutesandthenHydrocarbonMitigationbegins.

•Ifthestrategycontinuestofail,thenextactionwillneedtobetakentoclearthecodes.

Non-WorkModeFailure

IfthemachineisbeingusedatthetimeofthewarningmessageandcannotbeputintoNon-Work mode,thenraisetheintakeandexhausttemperaturefortheirtimethresholds.

•Intakeairmanifoldtemperatureisgreaterthan10°C(50°F)for10minutescontinuously

•Exhaustmanifoldtemperatureisgreaterthan325°C(617°F)for30minutescontinuously

•Blender-Idealtimetoperformthisisduringthe60minutelowtimeafteraHydrocarbon Mitigationfailure.

Note:HydrocarbonMitigationwillalwaysstartmitigation.

Shutoffs

Shutoffsandalarmsareelectricallyoperatedormechanicallyoperated.Theoperationofall electricshutoffsandalarmsutilizecomponentswhichactuateswitchesinasensingunit.

Alwaysdeterminethecauseoftheengineshutdown.Makenecessary repairsbeforeattemptingtorestarttheengine.

•Conditionswhichcauseeachshutofftofunction

•Theresettingprocedurethatisrequiredtorestarttheengine Alarms

Alarmsconsistofaswitchandacontactor.Theswitchesarewiredtothecontactors.The contactorsactivatealarmcircuitsinanannunciatorpanel.Yourenginemaybeequippedwiththe followingswitches:

Engineoilpressure-Theengineoilpressureswitchindicateswhenoilpressuredropsbelow ratedsystempressure.

Coolantlevel-Thelowcoolantlevelswitchindicateswhenthecoolantlevelislow.

Coolanttemperature-Thecoolanttemperatureswitchindicateshighjacketwatercoolant temperature.

Note:Thesensingelementofthecoolanttemperatureswitchmustbesubmergedincoolantin ordertooperate.

Enginesmaybeequippedwithalarmsinordertoalerttheoperatorwhenundesirableoperating conditionsoccur.

NOTICE

Whenanalarmisactivated,correctivemeasuresmustbetakenbefore thesituationbecomesanemergencyinordertoavoidpossibleengine damage.

Ifcorrectivemeasuresarenottakenwithinareasonabletime,enginedamagecouldresult.The alarmwillcontinueuntiltheconditioniscorrected.Thealarmmayneedtobereset.

Aswitchmaybeinstalledinthealarmwhiletheengineisstoppedforrepairs.Beforetheengineis started,ensurethattheswitchismovedtotheONpositionandthatthewarninglightsareflashing. TheenginewillnotbeprotectediftheswitchisleftintheOFFposition.

TestingtheShutoffandAlarmSystem

Mostcontrolpanelsareequippedwithalamptestswitch.TurntheswitchtotheONpositionin ordertochecktheindicatorlightsforproperoperation.Replacedefectivebulbsimmediately.

NOTICE

Duringtesting,abnormaloperatingconditionsmustbesimulated. Performthetestscorrectlyinordertohelppreventpossibleengine damage.

QuantitiesofNo.1dieselfuelarelimited.No.1dieselfuelsareusuallyavailableduringthe monthsofthewinterinthecolderclimates.Duringcold-weatheroperation,ifNo.1dieselfuelis notavailable,useNo.2dieselfuel,ifnecessary.

TherearethreemajordifferencesbetweenNo.1andNo.2dieselfuel.No.1dieselfuelhasthe followingproperties:

•Lowercloudpoint

•Lowerpourpoint

•LowerratingofkJ(BTU)perunitvolumeoffuel

WhenNo.1dieselfuelisused,adecreaseinpowerandinfuelefficiencymaybenoticed.Other operatingeffectsshouldnotbeexperienced.

Thecloudpointisthetemperaturewhenacloudofwaxcrystalsbeginstoforminthefuel.These crystalscancausethefuelfilterstoplug.Thepourpointisthetemperaturewhendieselfuelwill thicken.Thedieselfuelbecomesmoreresistanttoflowthroughfuelpumpsandthroughfuellines.

Beawareofthesevalueswhendieselfuelispurchased.Anticipatetheaverageambient temperatureofthearea.Enginesthatarefueledinoneclimatemaynotoperatewelliftheengines aremovedtoanotherclimate.Problemscanresultduetochangesintemperature.

Beforetroubleshootingforlowpowerorforpoorperformanceinthewinter,checkthetypeoffuel thatisbeingused.

Theefficiencyoftheenginecanaffectthefueleconomy.Caterpillar'sdesignandtechnologyin manufacturingprovidesmaximumfuelefficiencyinallapplications.Followtherecommended proceduresinordertoattainoptimumperformanceforthelifeoftheengine.

•Avoidspillingfuel.

Fuelexpandswhenthefueliswarmedup.Thefuelmayoverflowfromthefueltank.Inspectfuel linesforleaks.Repairthefuellines,asneeded.

•Beawareofthepropertiesofthedifferentfuels.Useonlytherecommendedfuels.

•Avoidunnecessaryidling.

Shutofftheengineratherthanidleforlongperiodsoftime.

•Observetheserviceindicatorfrequently.Keeptheaircleanerelementsclean.

•Ensurethattheturbochargersareoperatingcorrectlysothattheproperair/fuelratiois maintained.Cleanexhaustindicatesproperfunctioning.

•Maintainagoodelectricalsystem.

Onedefectivebatterycellwilloverworkthealternator.Thiswillconsumeexcesspowerand excessfuel.

•Ensurethatthebeltsareproperlyadjusted.Thebeltsshouldbeingoodcondition.

•Ensurethatalloftheconnectionsofthehosesaretight.Theconnectionsshouldnotleak.

•Ensurethatthedrivenequipmentisingoodworkingorder.

•Coldenginesconsumeexcessfuel.Utilizeheatfromthejacketwatersystemandthe exhaustsystem,whenpossible.Keepcoolingsystemcomponentscleanandkeepcooling

systemcomponentsingoodrepair.Neveroperatetheenginewithoutwatertemperature regulators.Alloftheseitemswillhelpmaintainoperatingtemperatures.

•Settingsforthefuelsystemandthelimitsfortheoperatingaltitudearestampedonthe EngineInformationPlate.Ifanengineismovedtoahigheraltitude,thesettingsmustbe changedbyaCaterpillardealer.Changingthesettingswillhelppreventdamagetothe turbocharger.Changingthesettingswillhelptoprovidethemaximumefficiencyforthe engine.Enginescanbeoperatedsafelyathigheraltitudes,buttheengineswilldeliverless horsepower.ThefuelsettingsshouldbechangedbyaCaterpillardealerinordertoobtain theratedhorsepower.

FuelRelatedComponentsinColdWeather

FuelTanks

Condensationcanforminpartiallyfilledfueltanks.Topoffthefueltanksafteryouoperatethe engine.

Fueltanksshouldcontainsomeprovisionfordrainingwaterandsedimentfromthebottomofthe tanks.Somefueltanksusesupplypipesthatallowwaterandsedimenttosettlebelowtheendof thefuelsupplypipe.

Somefueltanksusesupplylinesthattakefueldirectlyfromthebottomofthetank.Iftheengine isequippedwiththissystem,regularmaintenanceofthefuelsystemfilterisimportant.

Drainthewaterandsedimentfromanyfuelstoragetankatthefollowingintervals:weekly,oil changesandrefuelingofthefueltank.Thiswillhelppreventwaterand/orsedimentfrombeing pumpedfromthefuelstoragetankandintotheenginefueltank.

FuelFilters

Itispossibl%thataprimaryfuelfilterisinstalledbetweenthefueltankandtheenginefuelinlet. Afteryouchangethefuelfilter,alwaysprimethefuelsysteminordertoremoveairbubblesfrom thefuelsystem.RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManualintheMaintenanceSectionfor moreinformationonprimingthefuelsystem.

Themicronratingandthelocationofaprimaryfuelfilterisimportantincoldweatheroperation. Theprimaryfuelfilterandthefuelsupplylinearethemostcommoncomponentsthatareaffected bycoldfuel.

Inordertomaximizefuelsystemlifeandpreventprematurewearout fromabrasiveparticlesinthefuel,atwomicronabsolutehigh efficiencyfuelfilterisrequiredforallCaterpillarElectronicUnit Injectors.CaterpillarHighEfficiencyFuelFiltersmeetthese requirements.ConsultyourCaterpillardealerfortheproperpart numbers.

FuelHeaters

Fuelheatershelptopreventfuelfiltersfrompluggingincoldweatherduetowaxing.Afuelheater shouldbeinstalledinthefuelsystembeforetheprimaryfuelfilter.

ThefollowingfuelheatersarerecommendedforCaterpillarengines:

•7C-3557FuelHeaterGroup

•7C-3558HeaterKit

Forfurtherinformationonfuelheaters,consultyourCaterpillardealer. Disconnectthefuelheaterinwarmweather.

Note:Fuelheatersthatarecontrolledbythewatertemperatureregulatororself-regulatingfuel heatersshouldbeusedwiththisengine.Fuelheatersthatarenotcontrolledbythewater temperatureregulatorcanheatthefuelinexcessof65°C(149°F).Alossofenginepowercan occurifthefuelsupplytemperatureexceeds37°C(100°F).

Note:Heatexchangertypefuelheatersshouldhaveabypassprovisioninordertoprevent overheatingofthefuelinwarmweatheroperation.

Ifnooilpressureisindicated,STOPtheengine.Ifmaximumcoolant temperatureisexceeded,STOPtheengine.Enginedamagecanresult.

EngineOilPressure-The oilpressureshouldbe greatestafteracoldengineis started.Thetypicalengineoil pressurewithSAE10W30is 207to413kPa(30to60psi) atratedrpm.
