Operation

Operatingtechniquesoutlinedinthismanualarebasic.Theyassistwithdevelopingtheskillsand techniquesrequiredtooperatetheenginemoreefficientlyandeconomically.Skillandtechniques developastheoperatorgainsknowledgeoftheengineanditscapabilities.

Theoperationsectionisareferenceforoperators.Photographsandillustrationsguidetheoperator throughproceduresofinspecting,starting,operatingandstoppingtheengine.Thissectionalso includesadiscussionofelectronicdiagnosticinformation.

Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoenginecare.Theillustrated,step-by-stepinstructionsare groupedbyfuelconsumption,servicehoursand/orcalendartimemaintenanceintervals.Itemsinthe maintenanceschedulearereferencedtodetailedinstructionsthatfollow.

Usefuelconsumptionorservicehourstodetermineintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, annually,etc.)maybeusedinsteadofservicemeterintervalsiftheyprovidemoreconvenient schedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicemeterreading.

Recommendedserviceshouldbeperformedattheappropriateintervalsasindicatedinthe MaintenanceIntervalSchedule.Theactualoperatingenvironmentoftheenginealsogovernsthe MaintenanceIntervalSchedule.Therefore,underextremelysevere,dusty,wetorfreezingcold operatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationandmaintenancethanisspecifiedintheMaintenance IntervalSchedulemaybenecessary.

Themaintenancescheduleitemsareorganizedforapreventivemaintenancemanagementprogram.If thepreventivemaintenanceprogramisfollowed,aperiodictune-upisnotrequired.The implementationofapreventivemaintenancemanagementprogramshouldminimizeoperatingcosts throughcostavoidancesresultingfromreductionsinunscheduleddowntimeandfailures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Performmaintenanceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Eachleveland/orindividual itemsineachlevelshouldbeshiftedaheadorbackdependinguponyourspecificmaintenance practices,operationandapplication.Werecommendthatthemaintenanceschedulesbereproduced anddisplayedneartheengineasaconvenientreminder.Wealsorecommendthatamaintenance recordbemaintainedaspartoftheengine'spermanentrecord.

SeethesectionintheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"MaintenanceRecords"forinformation regardingdocumentsthataregenerallyacceptedasproofofmaintenanceorrepair.Yourauthorized Catdealercanassistyouinadjustingyourmaintenancescheduletomeettheneedsofyouroperating environment.

Overhaul

MajorengineoverhauldetailsarenotcoveredintheOperationandMaintenanceManualexceptfor theintervalandthemaintenanceitemsinthatinterval.Majorrepairsarebestlefttotrainedpersonnel oranauthorizedCatdealer.YourCatdealeroffersavarietyofoptionsregardingoverhaulprograms. Ifyouexperienceamajorenginefailure,therearealsonumerousafterfailureoverhauloptions availablefromyourCatdealer.Consultwithyourdealerforinformationregardingtheseoptions.

WaterPump-Inspect

Afailedwaterpumpmightcausesevereengineoverheatingproblemsthatcouldresultinthe followingconditions:

•Cracksinthecylinderhead

•Apistonseizure

•Otherpotentialdamagetotheengine

Afailedwaterpumpmightcausesevereengineoverheatingproblems.Overheatingcouldresultin cracksinthecylinderhead,apistonseizure,orotherpotentialdamagetotheengine.

Visuallyinspectthewaterpumpforleaks.Ifleakingofthewaterpumpsealsisobserved,replace allofthewaterpumpseals.RefertotwoarticlesintheDisassemblyandAssemblyManual, "WaterPump-DisassembleandWaterPump-Assemble"forthedisassemblyandassembly procedure.Ifnecessarytoremovethewaterpump,refertotwoarticlesintheDisassemblyand AssemblyManual,"WaterPump-RemoveandWaterPump-Install".

Walk-AroundInspection

SMCS-1000-040

InspecttheEngineforLeaksandforLooseConnections

Awalk-aroundinspectionshouldonlytakeafewminutes.Whenthetimeistakentoperform thesechecks,costlyrepairsandaccidentscanbeavoided.

Formaximumengineservicelife,makeathoroughinspectionoftheenginecompartmentbefore startingtheengine.Lookforitemssuchasoilleaksorcoolantleaks,loosebolts,wornbelts,loose connectionsandtrashbuildup.Makerepairs,asneeded:

•Theguardsmustbeintheproperplace.Repairdamagedguardsorreplacemissingguards.

•Wipeallcapsandplugsbeforetheengineisservicedinordertoreducethechanceof systemcontamination.

NOTICE

Foranytypeofleak(coolant,lube,orfuel)cleanupthefluid.If leakingisobserved,findthesourceandcorrecttheleak.Ifleakingis suspected,checkthefluidlevelsmoreoftenthanrecommendeduntil theleakisfoundorfixed,oruntilthesuspicionofaleakisprovedtobe unwarranted.

NOTICE

Accumulatedgreaseand/oroilonanengineordeckisafirehazard. Removethisdebriswithsteamcleaningorhighpressurewater.

•Ensurethatcoolinglinesareproperlyclampedandthatcoolinglinesaretight.Checkfor leaks.Checktheconditionofallpipes.

•Checkthemarinetransmissionoillevel.RefertotheOEMspecificationforthemarine transmissionorrefertotheOEMspecificationforthevessel.

•Inspectthewaterpumpsforcoolantleaks.

Note:Thewaterpumpsealislubricatedbycoolantinthecoolingsystem.Itisnormalforasmall amountofleakagetooccurastheenginecoolsdownandthepartscontract.

Excessivecoolantleakagemayindicatetheneedtoreplacethewaterpumpseal.Fortheremoval ofwaterpumpsandtheinstallationofwaterpumpsand/orseals,refertotheServiceManualfor theengineorconsultyourCaterpillardealer.

•Inspectthelubricationsystemforleaksatthefrontcrankshaftseal,therearcrankshaftseal, theoilpan,theoilfiltersandthevalvecover.

•Inspectthefuelsystemforleaks.Lookforloosefuellineclamps.

•Inspectthepipingfortheairinletsystemandtheelbowsforcracksandforlooseclamps.

•Inspectthealternatorbeltandtheaccessorydrivebeltsforcracks,breaksorotherdamage.

Beltsformultiplegroovepulleysmustbereplacedasmatchedsets.Ifonlyonebeltisreplaced, thebeltwillcarrymoreloadthanthebeltsthatarenotreplaced.Theolderbeltsarestretched.The additionalloadonthenewbeltcouldcausethebelttobreak.

•Drainthewaterandthesedimentfromfueltanksonadailybasisinordertoensurethat onlycleanfuelentersthefuelsystem.

•Inspectthewiringandthewiringharnessesforlooseconnectionsandforwornwiresor frayedwires.

•Inspectthegroundstrapforagoodconnectionandforgoodcondition.

•Disconnectanybatterychargersthatarenotprotectedagainstthecurrentdrainofthe startingmotor.Checktheconditionandtheelectrolytelevelofthebatteries,unlessthe engineisequippedwithamaintenancefreebattery.

•Checktheconditionofthegauges.Replaceanygaugeswhicharecrackedoranygauges thatcannotbecalibrated.

Turbocharger-Inspect

SMCS-1052-040

Periodicinspectionandcleaningarerecommendedfortheturbochargercompressorhousing(inlet side).Anyfumesfromthecrankcasearefilteredthroughtheairinletsystem.Therefore,byproductsfromoilandfromcombustioncancollectintheturbochargercompressorhousing.Over time,thisbuildupcancontributetolossofenginepower,increasedblacksmokeandoverallloss ofengineefficiency.

Iftheturbochargerfailsduringengineoperation,damagetotheturbochargercompressorwheel and/ortotheenginemayoccur.Damagetotheturbochargercompressorwheelcancause additionaldamagetothepistons,thevalves,andthecylinderhead.

NOTICE

Turbochargerbearingfailurescancauselargequantitiesofoiltoenter theairinletandexhaustsystems.Lossofenginelubricantcanresultin seriousenginedamage.

Minorleakageofaturbochargerhousingunderextendedlowidle operationshouldnotcauseproblemsaslongasaturbochargerbearing failurehasnotoccurred.

Whenaturbochargerbearingfailureisaccompaniedbyasignificant engineperformanceloss(exhaustsmokeorenginerpmupatnoload), donotcontinueengineoperationuntiltheturbochargerisrepairedor replaced. Aninspectionoftheturbochargercanminimizeunscheduleddowntime.Aninspectionofthe turbochargercanalsoreducethechanceforpotentialdamagetootherengineparts.

Note:Turbochargercomponentsrequireprecisionclearances.Theturbochargercartridgemustbe balancedduetohighrpm.SevereServiceApplicationscanacceleratecomponentwear.Severe ServiceApplicationsrequiremorefrequentinspectionsofthecartridge.

RemovalandInstallation

Foroptionsregardingtheremoval,installation,repair,andreplacement,consultyourCatdealer. RefertotheServiceManualforthisenginefortheprocedureandspecifications.

CleaningandInspecting

1.Removetheexhaustoutletpipingandremovetheairinletpipingfromtheturbocharger. Visuallyinspectthepipingforthepresenceofoil.Cleantheinteriorofthepipesinorderto preventdirtfromenteringduringreassembly.

2.Turnthecompressorwheelandtheturbinewheelbyhand.Theassemblyshouldturnfreely. Inspectthecompressorwheelandtheturbinewheelforcontactwiththeturbocharger housing.Thereshouldnotbeanyvisiblesignsofcontactbetweentheturbinewheelor compressorwheelandtheturbochargerhousing.Ifthereisanyindicationofcontact betweentherotatingturbinewheelorthecompressorwheelandtheturbochargerhousing, theturbochargermustbereconditioned.

3.Checkthecompressorwheelforcleanliness.Ifonlythebladesideofthewheelisdirty,dirt and/ormoistureispassingthroughtheairfilteringsystem.Ifoilisfoundonlyontheback sideofthewheel,thereisapossibilityofafailedturbochargeroilseal.

Thepresenceofoilmaybetheresultofextendedengineoperationatlowidle.Thepresence ofoilmayalsobetheresultofarestrictionofthelinefortheinletair(pluggedairfilters), whichcausestheturbochargertoslobber.

4.Inspecttheboreoftheturbinehousingforcorrosion.

5.Cleantheturbochargerhousingwithstandardshopsolventsandasoftbristlebrush.

6.Fastentheairinletpipingandtheexhaustoutletpipingtotheturbochargerhousing.

OverhaulConsiderations

SMCS-7595-043

Reducedhoursofoperationatfullloadwillresultinaloweraveragepowerdemand.Adecreased averagepowerdemandshouldincreaseboththeengineservicelifeandtheoverhaulinterval.

Theneedforanoverhaulisgenerallyindicatedbyincreasedfuelconsumptionandbyreduced power.

Thefollowingfactorsareimportantwhenadecisionisbeingmadeonthepropertimeforan engineoverhaul:

•Theneedforpreventivemaintenance

•Thequalityofthefuelthatisbeingused

•Theoperatingconditions

•TheresultsoftheS·O·Sanalysis

OilConsumptionasanOverhaulIndicator

Oilconsumption,fuelconsumption,andmaintenanceinformationcanbeusedtoestimatethetotal operatingcostforyourCaterpillarengine.Oilconsumptioncanalsobeusedtoestimatethe requiredcapacityofamakeupoiltankthatissuitableforthemaintenanceintervals.

Oilconsumptionisinproportiontothepercentageoftheratedengineload.Asthepercentageof theengineloadisincreased,theamountofoilthatisconsumedperhouralsoincreases.

Theoilconsumptionrate(brakespecificoilconsumption)ismeasuredingramsperkW/h(lbper bhp).Thebrakespecificoilconsumption(BSOC)dependsontheengineload.Consultyour Caterpillardealerforassistanceindeterminingthetypicaloilconsumptionrateforyourengine.

Whenanengine'soilconsumptionhasrisentothreetimestheoriginaloilconsumptionratedueto normalwear,anengineoverhaulshouldbescheduled.Theremaybeacorrespondingincreasein blowbyandaslightincreaseinfuelconsumption.

OverhaulOptions

BeforeFailureOverhaul

Aplannedoverhaulbeforefailuremaybethebestvalueforthefollowingreasons:

•Costlyunplanneddowntimecanbeavoided.

•Manyoriginalpartscanbereusedaccordingtothestandardsforreusableparts.

•Theengine'sservicelifecanbeextendedwithouttheriskofamajorcatastrophedueto enginefailure.

•Thebestcost/valuerelationshipperhourofextendedlifecanbeattained.

AfterFailureOverhaul

Ifamajorenginefailureoccursandtheenginemustberemovedfromthehull,manyoptionsare available.Anoverhaulshouldbeperformediftheengineblockorthecrankshaftneedstobe repaired.

Iftheengineblockisrepairableand/orthecrankshaftisrepairable,theoverhaulcostshouldbe between40percentand50percentofthecostofanewenginewithasimilarexchangecore.

Thislowercostcanbeattributedtothreeaspects:

•SpeciallydesignedCaterpillarenginefeatures

•Caterpillardealerexchangecomponents

•Caterpillarremanufacturedexchangecomponents

OverhaulRecommendation

Tominimizedowntime,CaterpillarrecommendsascheduledengineoverhaulbyyourCaterpillar dealerbeforetheenginefails.Thiswillprovideyouwiththebestcost/valuerelationship.

Note:Overhaulprogramsvaryaccordingtotheengineapplicationandaccordingtothedealerthat performstheoverhaul.ConsultyourCaterpillardealerforspecificinformationabouttheavailable overhaulprogramsandaboutoverhaulservicesforextendingtheenginelife.

IfanoverhaulisperformedwithoutoverhaulservicefromyourCaterpillardealer,beawareofthe followingmaintenancerecommendations.

RebuildorExchange

CylinderHeadAssembly,OilPump,andFuelTransferPump

Thesecomponentsshouldbeinspectedaccordingtotheinstructionsthatarefoundinvarious Caterpillarreusabilitypublications.TheSpecialPublication,SEBF8029liststhereusability publicationsthatareneededforinspectingtheengineparts.

Ifthepartscomplywiththeestablishedinspectionspecificationsthatareexpressedinthereusable partsguideline,thepartsshouldbereused.

Partsthatarenotwithintheestablishedinspectionspecificationsshouldbedealtwithinoneofthe followingmanners:

•Salvaging

•Repairing

•Replacing

Usingout-of-specpartscanresultinthefollowingproblems:

•Unscheduleddowntime

•Costlyrepairs

•Damagetootherengineparts

•Reducedengineefficiency

•Increasedfuelconsumption

Reducedengineefficiencyandincreasedfuelconsumptiontranslatesintohigheroperatingcosts. Therefore,Caterpillarrecommendsrepairingout-of-specpartsorreplacingout-of-specparts.

Inspectionand/orReplacement

CrankshaftBearings,CrankshaftSeals,ThrustBearings,MainBearings,andRodBearings

Thefollowingcomponentsmaynotlastuntilthesecondoverhaul.

•Thrustbearings

•Mainbearings

•Rodbearings

•Crankshaftseals

Caterpillarrecommendstheinstallationofnewpartsateachoverhaulperiod.

Inspectthesepartswhiletheengineisdisassembledforanoverhaul.

Inspectthecrankshaftforanyofthefollowingconditions:

•Deflection

•Damagetothejournals

•Bearingmaterialthathasseizedtothejournals

Checkthejournaltaperandtheprofileofthecrankshaftjournals.Checkthesecomponentsby interpretingthewearpatternsonthefollowingcomponents:

•Rodbearing

•Mainbearings

Note:Ifthecrankshaftisremovedforanyreason,usethemagneticparticleinspectionprocessto checkforcracksinthecrankshaft.

Inspectthecamshaftfordamagetothejournalsandtothelobes.

Note:Ifthecamshaftisremovedforanyreason,usethemagneticparticleinspectionprocessto checkforcracksinthecamshaft.

Inspectthefollowingcomponentsforsignsofwearorforsignsofscuffing:

•Camshaftbearings

•Camshaftfollowers

Caterpillarrecommendsreplacingthecrankshaftvibrationdamper.

OilCoolerCore,AftercoolerCore,andHeatExchangerCore

Duringanoverhaul,Caterpillarrecommendstheremovaloftheoilcoolercore,theaftercooler core,andtheheatexchanger.Cleanthecores.Then,pressuretestthecores.

NOTICE

Donotusecausticcleanerstocleanthecore.

Causticcleanerscanattacktheinternalmetalsofthecoreandcause leakage.

Note:Usethiscleaningproceduretocleantheoilcoolercore,theaftercoolercore,andtheheat exchangercore.

1.Removetheoilcoolercore,theaftercoolercore,andtheheatexchangercore.

2.Removeanydebrisfromthecores.Toremovedebrisfromtheoilcoolercore,turntheoil coolercoreontooneend.Toremovedebrisfromtheaftercoolercore,turntheaftercooler coreupside-down.Toremovedebrisfromtheheatexchangercore,turntheheatexchanger coreontooneend.

3.Flushthecoresinternallywithcleanerinordertoloosenforeignsubstances.Thiswillalso helptoremoveoilfromtheoilcoolercoreandtheaftercoolercore.

Note:CaterpillarrecommendstheuseofHydrosolvLiquidCleaners.Table1liststhe HydrosolvLiquidCleanersthatareavailablefromyourCaterpillardealer.

4.Usesteamtocleanthecores.Thisremovesanyremainingresiduefromthecleaner.Flush thefinsofeachofthecores.Removeanyothertrappeddebris.

5.Washthecoreswithhot,soapywater.Rinsethecoresthoroughlywithcleanwater.

Personalinjurycanresultfromairpressure.

Personalinjurycanresultwithoutfollowingproperprocedure.When usingpressureair,wearaprotectivefaceshieldandprotectiveclothing.

Maximumairpressureatthenozzlemustbelessthan205kPa(30psi) forcleaningpurposes.

6.Drythecoreswithcompressedair.Directtheairinthereversedirectionofthenormalflow.

7.Inspectthecomponentsinordertoensurecleanliness.Theoilcoolercore,theaftercooler core,andtheheatexchangercoreshouldbepressuretested.Repaircores,ifnecessary. Installtheoilcoolercore,theaftercoolercore,andtheheatexchangercore.

Formoreinformationaboutcleaningthecores,consultyourCaterpillardealer.

ObtainCoolantAnalysis

Theconcentrationofsupplementalcoolantadditive(SCA)shouldbecheckedregularlywithtest kitsorwithS·O·SCoolantAnalysis(LevelI).Furthercoolantanalysisisrecommendedwhenthe engineisoverhauled.

Forexample,considerabledepositsarefoundinthewaterjacketareasontheexternalcooling system,buttheconcentrationsofcoolantadditiveswerecarefullymaintained.Thecoolantwater probablycontainedmineralsthatweredepositedontheengineovertime.

Acoolantanalysiscanbeconductedinordertoverifytheconditionofthewaterthatisbeingused inthecoolingsystem.Afullwateranalysiscanbeobtainedbyconsultingyourlocalwaterutility companyoranagriculturalagent.Privatelaboratoriesarealsoavailableforwateranalysis.

CaterpillarrecommendsanS·O·SCoolantAnalysis(LevelII).

S·O·SCoolantAnalysis(LevelII)

AnS·O·SCoolantAnalysis(LevelII)isacomprehensivecoolantanalysiswhichcompletely analyzesthecoolantandtheeffectsonthecoolingsystem.AnS·O·SCoolantAnalysis(LevelII) providesthefollowinginformation:

Hosesandclampsmustbeinspectedperiodicallyandreplacedattherecommendedintervalto ensuresafeandcontinuousoperationoftheengine.Failuretoreplaceafuelhoseatthe recommendedchangeintervalmayresultinahazardoussituation.Takepropersafetyprecautions beforeinspectingorreplacinghosesandclamps.

Note:Alwaysuseaboardorcardboardwhentheenginecomponentsarecheckedforleaks. Leakingfluidthatisunderpressurecancauseseriousinjuryorpossibledeath.Leaksthatarethe sizeofapinholeareincluded.RefertoOperationandMaintenanceManual,"GeneralHazard Information"formoreinformation.

Note:Ensurethatthehoseiscompatiblewiththeapplication.

InspectTubes,Hoses,Bellows,andClamps

Inspectalltubesandhosesforleaksthatarecausedbythefollowingconditions.Replaceanytube orhosewhichexhibitsanyofthefollowingconditions.Failuretoreplaceatubeorhosewhich exhibitsanyofthefollowingconditionsmayresultinahazardoussituation.

•Hoseswhicharecracked

•Hoseswhicharesoft

•Outercoveringthatischafedorcut

•Exposedwirethatisusedforreinforcement

•Outercoveringthatisballooninglocally

•Flexiblepartofthehosethatiskinkedorcrushed

•Armoringthatisembeddedintheoutercovering

•Exhaustbellowsforleaksordamage

•Hoseswhichexhibitsignsofleakagewhicharenottheresultofloosecouplingsorclamps

Inspectallclampsforthefollowingconditions.Replaceanyclampwhichexhibitssignsofanyof thefollowingconditions.

•Cracking

•Looseness

•Damage

Inspectallcouplingsforleaks.Replaceanycouplingwhichexhibitssignsofleaks.

Eachinstallationapplicationcanbedifferent.Thedifferencesdependonthefollowingfactors:

•Typeofhose

•Typeoffittingmaterial

•Anticipatedexpansionandcontractionofthehose

•Anticipatedexpansionandcontractionofthefittings

Duetoextremetemperaturechanges,thehosewillheatset.Heatsettingcauseshoseclampsto loosenwhichcanresultinleaks.Aconstanttorquehoseclampwillhelptopreventloosehose clamps.

Replacehosesthatarecrackedorsoft.Replacehosesthatshowsignsofleakage.Replacehoses thatshowsignsofdamage.Replacehoseclampsthatarecrackedordamaged.Tightenorreplace hoseclampswhichareloose.

ReplacetheHosesandtheClamps

NOTICE

Caremustbetakentoensurethatfluidsarecontainedduring performanceofinspection,maintenance,testing,adjusting,andrepair oftheproduct.Bepreparedtocollectthefluidwithsuitablecontainers beforeopeninganycompartmentordisassemblinganycomponent containingfluids.

RefertoSpecialPublication,NENG2500,"CatDealerServiceTool Catalog"orrefertoSpecialPublication,PECJ0003,"CatShop SuppliesandToolsCatalog"fortoolsandsuppliessuitabletocollect andcontainfluidsonCatproducts.

Disposeofallfluidsaccordingtolocalregulationsandmandates. CoolingSystem

PressurizedSystem:Hotcoolantcancauseseriousburns.Toopenthe coolingsystemfillercap,stoptheengineandwaituntilthecooling systemcomponentsarecool.Loosenthecoolingsystempressurecap slowlyinordertorelievethepressure.

Personalinjurycanresultfromremovinghosesorfittingsinapressure system.

Failuretorelievepressurecancausepersonalinjury.

Donotdisconnectorremovehosesorfittingsuntilallpressureinthe systemhasbeenrelieved.

1.Stoptheengine.

2.Allowtheenginetocool.

3.Beforeservicingacoolanthose,slowlyloosenthefillercapforthecoolingsystemto relieveanypressure.

4.Removethefillercapforthecoolingsystem.

5.Drainthecoolantfromthecoolingsystemtoalevelthatisbelowthehosethatisbeing replaced.Drainthecoolantintoasuitablecleancontainer.Thecoolantcanbereused.

6.Removethehoseclamps.

7.Disconnecttheoldhose.

8.Replacetheoldhosewithanewhose.

9.Installhoseclampswhichhavebeeninspectedorinstallnewhoseclamps.Referto Specifications,SENR3130,"TorqueSpecifications","HoseClamps"forinformationabout selectingandinstallingtheproperhoseclamps.

10.Refillthecoolingsystem.

11.Cleanthecoolantfillercap.Inspectthegasketsonthefillercap.Inspectthegasketseat. Inspectthevacuumvalveandseatfordebrisordamage.Replacethefillercapifthegaskets aredamaged.Installthefillercap.

12.Starttheengine.Inspectthecoolingsystemforleaks.

FuelSystem

Personalinjurycanresultfromremovinghosesorfittingsinapressure system.

Failuretorelievepressurecancausepersonalinjury.

Donotdisconnectorremovehosesorfittingsuntilallpressureinthe systemhasbeenrelieved.

Contactwithhighpressurefuelmaycausefluidpenetrationandburn hazards.Highpressurefuelspraymaycauseafirehazard.Failureto followtheseinspection,maintenanceandserviceinstructionsmaycause personalinjuryordeath.

NOTICE

Donotbendorstrikehighpressurelines.Donotinstallbentor damagedlines,tubesorhoses.Repairanylooseordamagedfueland oillines,tubesandhoses.Leakscancausefires.Inspectalllines,tubes andhosescarefully.Tightenallconnectionstotherecommended torque.

NOTICE

Donotallowdirttoenterthefuelsystem.Thoroughlycleanthearea aroundafuelsystemcomponentthatwillbedisconnected.Fita suitablecoveroveranydisconnectedfuelsystemcomponents.

Note:High-pressurefuellinesmaybeinstalledbetweenthehigh-pressurefuelpumpand thefuelinjectors.High-pressurefuellinesareconstantlychargedwithhighpressure.Donot checkthehigh-pressurefuellineswiththeengineorthestartingmotorinoperation.Wait

for10minutesaftertheenginestopsbeforeyouperformanyserviceorrepaironhighpressurefuellines.Waitingfor10minuteswillallowthepressuretobepurged.

1.Drainthefuelfromthefuelsystemtoalevelthatisbelowthehosethatisbeingreplaced.

2.Removethehoseclamps.

3.Disconnecttheoldhose.

Note:Whenservicingfuelsystem,usecap/sorcover/sasrequiredtoprotectthesystemand maintainfuelsystemcleanliness.

4.Replacetheoldhosewithanewhose.

5.Installhoseclampswhichhavebeeninspectedorinstallnewhoseclamps.Referto Specifications,SENR3130,"TorqueSpecifications","HoseClamps"forinformationabout selectingandinstallingtheproperhoseclamps.

6.Carefullyinspecttheengineforanyspilledfuel.Makesurethatnofuelremainsonorclose totheengine.

Note:Fuelmustbeaddedtothefuelsystemaheadofthefuelfilter.

7.Refillthefuelsystem.RefertothisOperationandMaintenanceManual,"FuelSystemPrime"forinformationaboutprimingtheenginewithfuel.

8.Starttheengine.Inspectthefuelsystemforleaks.

LubricationSystem

Hotoilandhotcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhot oilorhotcomponentstocontacttheskin.

1.Draintheoilfromthelubricationsystemtoalevelthatisbelowthehosethatisbeing replaced.

2.Removethehoseclamps.

3.Disconnecttheoldhose.

4.Replacetheoldhosewithanewhose.

5.Installhoseclampswhichhavebeeninspectedorinstallnewhoseclamps.Referto Specifications,SENR3130,"TorqueSpecifications","HoseClamps"forinformationabout selectingandinstallingtheproperhoseclamps.

6.Refillthelubricationsystem.RefertothisOperationandMaintenanceManual,"EngineOil Level-Check"toensurethatthelubricationsystemisfilledwiththeproperamountof engineoil.

7.Starttheengine.Inspectthelubricationsystemforleaks.

AirSystem

1.Removethehoseclamps.

2.Disconnecttheoldhose.

3.Replacetheoldhosewithanewhose.

HeatExchanger-Inspect

Theintervalforthemaintenanceofthetubetypeheatexchangerdependsontheoperating environmentofthevesselandontheoperatingtime.Theseawaterthatiscirculatedthroughthe heatexchangerandtheamountofoperatingtimeofthevesselaffectsthefollowingitems:

•Cleanlinessofthetubesfortheheatexchanger

•Effectivenessoftheheatexchangersystem

Operatinginwaterthatcontainssilt,sediment,salt,algae,etcwilladverselyaffecttheheat exchangersystem.Inaddition,intermittentuseofthevesselwilladverselyaffecttheheat exchangersystem.

Thefollowingitemsindicatethattheheatexchangermayrequirecleaning:

•Increasedcoolanttemperature

•Engineoverheating

•Excessivepressuredropbetweenthewaterinletandthewateroutlet

Anoperatorthatisfamiliarwiththenormaloperatingtemperatureofthecoolantcandetermine whenthecoolanttemperatureisoutofthenormalrange.Inspectionandmaintenanceoftheheat exchangerarerequirediftheengineisoverheating.

Theprocedureforcleaningtheheatexchangeristhesameprocedurethatisusedforcleaningthe aftercoolercore.RefertotheOperationandMaintenanceManual,"AftercoolerCore-Clean/Test" topic(MaintenanceSection).Formoreinformationonservicingtheheatexchanger,consultyour Caterpillardealer.
