Maintenance

Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS)lists theitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsarelisted underthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhepage numberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance.Usethe MaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenanceprocedures.

MaintenanceIntervals

Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily,weekly, monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsifthecalendarintervalsprovide moreconvenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeterreading. Performtherecommendedserviceattheintervalthatoccursfirst.

Undersevere,dusty,orwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.

Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500service hoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursormonthlyandevery 10servicehoursordaily.

CertifiedEngineMaintenance

Propermaintenanceandrepairareessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavy-dutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceof therequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenanceManual,and ServiceManual.

Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,ortorenderinoperative,anyemission-relateddeviceor elementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewithallapplicable regulationsoftheintendedcountrytowhichithasbeenshipped.Certainelementsofthemachineand enginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeairsystem,andcooling systemmaybeemission-relatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedbyCaterpillar.

MachineCapacity

Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcanadversely affectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertificationssuchas brakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerforfurther information.

ProductIdentificationNumber

EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Toprovideuniformequipmentidentification,constructionequipmentmanufacturersare movingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentificationnumberingstandard.Non-road machinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplytoallmachinesand generatorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN.Thenewformat willlooklikethefollowing:

BeforeStartingEngine

Starttheengineonlyfromtheoperatorcompartment.Nevershortacrossthestarterterminalsor acrossthebatteries.Shortingcoulddamagetheelectricalsystembybypassingtheengineneutralstart system.

Inspecttheconditionoftheseatbeltandofthemountinghardware.Replaceanypartsthatareworn ordamaged.Regardlessofappearance,replacetheseatbeltafterthreeyearsofuse.Donotuseaseat beltextensiononaretractableseatbelt.

Adjusttheseatsothatfullpedaltravelcanbeachievedwiththeoperator'sbackagainstthebackof theseat.

Makesurethatthemachineisequippedwithalightingsystemthatisadequateforthejobconditions. Makesurethatallmachinelightsareworkingproperly.

Beforeyoustarttheengineandbeforeyoumovethemachine,makesurethatnooneisunderneath themachine,aroundthemachine,oronthemachine.Makesurethattheareaisfreeofpersonnel.

BurnPrevention

SMCS-7000

Donottouchanypartofanoperatingengine.Allowmachinesystemstocoolbeforeanymaintenance isperformed.Relieveallpressureintheairsystem,intheoilsystem,inthelubricationsystem,inthe fuelsystem,orinthecoolingsystembeforeanylines,fittings,orrelateditemsaredisconnected.

ExhaustGasRecirculationCooler

Theexhaustgasrecirculation(EGR)coolermaycontainasmallamountofsulfuricacid.Theuseof fuelwithsulfurlevelsgreaterthan15ppmmayincreasetheamountofsulfuricacidthatisformed. ThesulfuricacidmayspillfromtheEGRcoolerduringserviceoftheengine.Thesulfuricacidwill burntheeyes,skin,andclothingoncontact.Alwaysweareyeshields,rubbergloves,andprotective clothingwhenyoumaycomeincontactwithfluidsthatmayspillfromtheEGRcooler.Iffluid contactstheeyes,immediatelyflushwithwaterandseekmedicalhelp.

Coolant

Whentheengineisatoperatingtemperature,theenginecoolantishot.Thecoolantisalsounder pressure.Theradiatorandalllinestotheheatersortotheenginecontainhotcoolant.

Anycontactwithhotcoolantorwithsteamcancausesevereburns.Allowcoolingsystem componentstocoolbeforethecoolingsystemisdrained.

Checkthecoolantlevelonlyaftertheenginehasbeenstopped.

Ensurethatthefillercapiscoolbeforeremovingthefillercap.Thefillercapmustbecoolenoughto touchwithabarehand.Removethefillercapslowlyinordertorelievepressure.

Coolingsystemconditionercontainsalkali.Alkalicancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowalkalito contacttheskin,theeyes,orthemouth.

Oils

Hotoilandhotcomponentscancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowhotoiltocontacttheskin.Also, donotallowhotcomponentstocontacttheskin.

Removethehydraulictankfillercaponlyaftertheenginehasbeenstopped.Thefillercapmustbe coolenoughtotouchwithabarehand.Followthestandardprocedureinthismanualinorderto removethehydraulictankfillercap.

Batteries

Electrolyteisanacid.Electrolytecancausepersonalinjury.Donotallowelectrolytetocontactthe skinortheeyes.Alwayswearprotectiveglassesforservicingbatteries.Washhandsaftertouchingthe batteriesandconnectors.Useofglovesisrecommended.

CrushingPreventionandCuttingPrevention

Supporttheequipmentproperlybeforeyouperformanyworkormaintenancebeneaththatequipment. Donotdependonthehydrauliccylinderstoholduptheequipment.Equipmentcanfallifacontrolis moved,orifahydrauliclinebreaks.

Donotworkbeneaththecabofthemachineunlessthecabisproperlysupported.

Unlessyouareinstructedotherwise,neverattemptadjustmentswhilethemachineismovingorwhile theengineisrunning.

Neverjumpacrossthestartersolenoidterminalsinordertostarttheengine.Unexpectedmachine movementcouldresult.

Wheneverthereareequipmentcontrollinkagestheclearanceinthelinkageareawillchangewiththe movementoftheequipmentorthemachine.Stayclearofareasthatmayhaveasuddenchangein clearancewithmachinemovementorequipmentmovement.

Stayclearofallrotatingandmovingparts.

Ifitisnecessarytoremoveguardsinordertoperformmaintenance,alwaysinstalltheguardsafterthe maintenanceisperformed.

Keepobjectsawayfrommovingfanblades.Thefanbladewillthrowobjectsorcutobjects.

Donotuseakinkedwirecableorafrayedwirecable.Weargloveswhenyouhandlewirecable.

Whenyoustrikearetainerpinwithforce,theretainerpincanflyout.Thelooseretainerpincan injurepersonnel.Makesurethattheareaisclearofpeoplewhenyoustrikearetainerpin.Toavoid injurytoyoureyes,wearprotectiveglasseswhenyoustrikearetainerpin.

Chipsorotherdebriscanflyoffanobjectwhenyoustriketheobject.Makesurethatnoonecanbe injuredbyflyingdebrisbeforestrikinganyobject.

MoveallhydrauliccontrolstotheNEUTRALpositionbeforeyoustarttheengine.

Settheenginespeedcontrolknobtothelowidlepositionbeforeyoustarttheengine.SeeOperation MaintenanceManual,EngineStartingforspecificenginestartingandwarmupprocedures,andan explanationofseveralengineprotectionmodesthatmaybeactiveundercertainconditionswhich mightimpacttheexpectedordesiredenginespeed.

Dieselengineexhaustcontainsproductsofcombustionwhichcanbeharmfultoyourhealth.Always starttheengineinawellventilatedarea.Alwaysoperatetheengineinawellventilatedarea.Ifyou areinanenclosedarea,venttheexhausttotheoutside.
