Maintenance
Themaintenancesectionisaguidetoequipmentcare.TheMaintenanceIntervalSchedule(MIS) liststheitemstobemaintainedataspecificserviceinterval.Itemswithoutspecificintervalsare listedunderthe"WhenRequired"serviceinterval.TheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleliststhe pagenumberforthestep-by-stepinstructionsrequiredtoaccomplishthescheduledmaintenance. UsetheMaintenanceIntervalScheduleasanindexor"onesafesource"forallmaintenance procedures.
MaintenanceIntervals
Usetheservicehourmetertodetermineservicingintervals.Calendarintervalsshown(daily, weekly,monthly,etc.)canbeusedinsteadofservicehourmeterintervalsifthecalendarintervals
providemoreconvenientservicingschedulesandapproximatetheindicatedservicehourmeter reading.Performtherecommendedserviceattheintervalthatoccursfirst.
Undersevere,dusty,orwetoperatingconditions,morefrequentlubricationthanisspecifiedinthe maintenanceintervalschartmightbenecessary.
Performserviceonitemsatmultiplesoftheoriginalrequirement.Forexample,atevery500 servicehoursor3months,alsoservicethoseitemslistedunderevery250servicehoursor monthlyandevery10servicehoursordaily.
CertifiedEngineMaintenance
Propermaintenanceandrepairareessentialtokeeptheengineandmachinesystemsoperating correctly.Astheheavy-dutyoff-roaddieselengineowner,youareresponsibleforthe performanceoftherequiredmaintenancelistedintheOwnerManual,OperationandMaintenance Manual,andServiceManual.
Itisprohibitedforanypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or tradingenginesormachinestoremove,alter,ortorenderinoperative,anyemission-relateddevice orelementofdesigninstalledonorinanengineormachinethatisincompliancewithall applicableregulationsoftheintendedcountrytowhichithasbeenshipped.Certainelementsof themachineandenginesuchastheexhaustsystem,fuelsystem,electricalsystem,intakeair system,andcoolingsystemmaybeemission-relatedandshouldnotbealteredunlessapprovedby Caterpillar.
MachineCapacity
Additionalattachmentsormodificationsmayexceedmachinedesigncapacitywhichcan adverselyaffectperformancecharacteristics.Includedwouldbestabilityandsystemcertifications suchasbrakes,steering,androlloverprotectivestructures(ROPS).ContactyourCatdealerfor furtherinformation.
ProductIdentificationNumber
EffectiveFirstQuarter2001theProductIdentificationNumber(PIN)haschangedfrom8to17 characters.Toprovideuniformequipmentidentification,constructionequipmentmanufacturers aremovingtocomplywiththelatestversionoftheproductidentificationnumberingstandard. Non-roadmachinePINsaredefinedbyISO10261.ThenewPINformatwillapplytoall machinesandgeneratorsets.ThePINplatesandframemarkingwilldisplaythe17characterPIN. Thenewformatwilllooklikethefollowing:

Guards-OperatorProtection
SMCS-7000
Therearedifferenttypesofguardsthatareusedtoprotecttheoperator.Themachineandthe machineapplicationdeterminethetypeofguardthatshouldbeused.
Adailyinspectionoftheguardsisrequiredinordertocheckforstructuresthatarebent,cracked, orloose.Neveroperateamachinewithadamagedstructure.
Theoperatorbecomesexposedtoahazardoussituationifthemachineisusedimproperlyorif pooroperatingtechniquesareused.Thissituationcanoccureventhoughamachineisequipped withanappropriateprotectiveguard.Followtheestablishedoperatingproceduresthatare recommendedforyourmachine.
RolloverProtectiveStructure(ROPS),FallingObject ProtectiveStructure(FOPS)orTipOverProtection Structure(TOPS)
TheROPS/FOPSStructure(ifequipped)onyourmachineisspecificallydesigned,testedand certifiedforthatmachine.AnyalterationoranymodificationtotheROPS/FOPSStructurecould weakenthestructure.Thisplacestheoperatorintoanunprotectedenvironment.Modificationsor attachmentsthatcausethemachinetoexceedtheweightthatisstampedonthecertificationplate alsoplacetheoperatorintoanunprotectedenvironment.Excessiveweightmayinhibitthebrake performance,thesteeringperformanceandtheROPS.Theprotectionthatisofferedbythe ROPS/FOPSStructurewillbeimpairediftheROPS/FOPSStructurehasstructuraldamage. Damagetothestructurecanbecausedbyanoverturn,afallingobject,acollision,etc.
Donotmountitems(fireextinguishers,firstaidkits,worklights,etc)byweldingbracketstothe ROPS/FOPSStructureorbydrillingholesintheROPS/FOPSStructure.Weldingbracketsor drillingholesintheROPS/FOPSStructurescanweakenthestructures.ConsultyourCatdealerfor mountingguidelines.
TheTipOverProtectionStructure(TOPS)isanothertypeofguardthatisusedonminihydraulic excavators.Thisstructureprotectstheoperatorintheeventofatipover.Thesameguidelinesfor
theinspection,themaintenanceandthemodificationoftheROPS/FOPSStructurearerequiredfor theTipOverProtectionStructure.
OtherGuards(IfEquipped)
Protectionfromflyingobjectsand/orfallingobjectsisrequiredforspecialapplications.Logging applicationsanddemolitionapplicationsaretwoexamplesthatrequirespecialprotection.
Afrontguardneedstobeinstalledwhenaworktoolthatcreatesflyingobjectsisused.Meshfront guardsthatareapprovedbyCaterpillarorpolycarbonatefrontguardsthatareapprovedby Caterpillarareavailableformachineswithacaboranopencanopy.Onmachinesthatare equippedwithcabs,thewindowsshouldalsobeclosed.Safetyglassesarerecommendedwhen flyinghazardsexistformachineswithcabsandmachineswithopencanopies.
Iftheworkmaterialextendsabovethecab,topguardsandfrontguardsshouldbeused.Typical examplesofthistypeofapplicationarelistedbelow:

Onlyoperatethemachinewhileyouareintheseat.Theseatbeltmustbefastenedwhileyou operatethemachine.Onlyoperatethecontrolswhiletheengineisrunning.
Beforeyouoperatethemachine,removethewheelleanlockingboltfromthewheelleanlock bracket.Makesurethattheframelockpinisstoredintheunlockedposition.Articulatethe machine.Theframelocklinkmustberemovedinordertoarticulatethemachine.
Note:Withjoysticksteering,thepositionsensorsforthesteeringcylinderslimitthesteeringangle oftheaxle.Thiscausestheaxlestopstonotmakecontact.
Donotusethewheelleanlockingboltandthewheelleanlockbracketinordertocenterthewheel leanofthemachine.
Whilethegroundisbeinggraded,donotoperatethemachinewiththedoorsopen.
Whileyouoperatethemachineslowlyinanopenarea,checkforproperoperationofallcontrols andallprotectivedevices.
Beforeyoumaneuverthemachine,makesurethatnopersonnelarebetweenthemachineand attachments.
Beforeyoumovethemachine,makesurethatnoonewillbeendangered.
Whenyouoperatethemachineandtheworktoolinanopenarea,checkforproperoperationofthe controlsandcheckforoperationoftheprotectivedevices.
Donotallowridersonthemachinewhilethemachineisbeingoperated.
Neverusetheworktoolforaworkplatform.
Reduceenginespeedwhenyoumaneuverintightquartersorwhenyouaregoingoverahill.
Donotoperatethemachineclosetoacliff.Donotoperatethemachinenearanexcavation.Donot operatethemachinenearanoverhang.
Whenyouoperatethemachinedownhill,usetwotransmissiongearslessthanthetransmission gearthatisusedwhenyouoperatethemachineupthesamehill.
Note:CaterpillardoesnotrecommendthatyoushifttotheNEUTRALpositionwhenyouoperate themachinedownhill.IfyoushifttotheNEUTRALpositionthemachinemayrequireadditional brakingeffortthatcouldacceleratewearoftheservicebrakecomponents.
Donotallowtheenginetooverspeedwhenyouoperatethemachinedownhill.Ifoverspeedexists, usetheservicebrakecontroltodecreasethespeedtoalevelthatwillallowyoutodownshift. Repeatthisprocessuntilastablespeedisobtained.Beforetheengineispushedbeyonda dangerousspeedlevel,thetransmissionwillautomaticallyupshiftinordertokeeptheengine speedwithinasafespeedrange.However,whenthemaximumgearisreached,theservicebrakes mustbeusedtocontrolthemachinespeedandtheservicebrakesmustbeusedtopreventthe enginefromoverspeeding.
Carryattachmentsapproximately40cm(15inches)abovegroundlevel.Donotgoclosetothe edgeofacliff,anexcavation,oranoverhang.
Ifthemachinebeginstosideslipdownwardonagrade,immediatelyremovetheloadandturnthe machinedownhill.
Avoidanyconditionsthatcanleadtotippingthemachine.Themachinecantipwhenyouworkon hills,onbanksandonslopes.Also,themachinecantipwhenyoucrossditches,ridges,orother unexpectedobstructions.
Avoidoperatingthemachineacrosstheslope.Whenpossible,operatethemachineuptheslopes anddowntheslopes.
Whenyouoperatethemachineonaslope,usealowgroundspeedformaximumcontrolofthe machine.Whenyoureleasetheaccelerator,therewillbeimmediatereductioninenginerpmand groundspeed.
Whenyouoperateonaslope,engagethedifferentiallockcontrol.Whenyouoperateonaslope, usethethrottlelockandusetheacceleratorcontrol.
Onsteeperslopes,shiftthebladedrawbaruphilltowardthetoeofthemoldboard.Articulatethe rearframesotheheavyengineframeisonthedownhillsideoftheslopeforaddedstability.
Whenyouoperateonaslopelessthan2.5:1startatthetopoftheslope.Castthewithdrawn materialoutsideofthereartandemtirestopreventthereartiresfromsliding.
Maintaincontrolofthemachine.Donotoverloadthemachinebeyondthemachinecapacity. Neverstraddleawirecable.Neverallowotherpersonneltostraddleawirecable.
Knowthemaximumdimensionsofyourmachine.
AlwayskeeptheRolloverProtectiveStructure(ROPS)installedduringmachineoperation.
Noteanyneededrepairsduringmachineoperation.Reportanyneededrepairs.
ParkBrakeOverride
Youcanoverridethesteeringalignmentandyoucanoverridetheparkingbrakeinterlocksin ordertomovethemachineoutofdanger.
Note:AWarningCategory2Swilloccurduringaparkbrakeoverride.Thealarmwilldeactivate oncethetransmissionisreturnedtotheNEUTRALpositionormachinespeedhasbeendetected andthefrontwheelshavebeenalignedtotheleft-handjoystickandthesteeringhasbecome active.
Inordertoactivatetheparkbrakeoverride,followthesesteps:
•Pushinthebottomoftheparkingbrakeswitchinordertodisengagetheparkingbrake.
•Depressthetransmissionmodulatorcontrol(inchingpedal).Iftheleft-handjoystickhasnot beenalignedwiththefrontwheels,thesteeringwillnotactivate.Theparkbrakewillnot release.
•Bringthemachinetohighidlebydepressingtheacceleratorcontrol.
•Positiontheleft-handjoystickinthepositionyouwantthefrontwheelstoalign.
•Selectthepreferreddirectiononthetransmissioncontrolswitch.
•Slowlyreleasethetransmissionmodulatorcontrol(inchingpedal).Theparkbrakewillnow disengageandthemachinewillmoveinthedirectionthathasbeenselected.
•Thefrontwheelswillautomaticallyaligntothesameangleastheleft-handjoystickwhen machinespeedisdetected.Thesteeringwillthenbecomeactive.
Note:"1F"and"1R"aretheonlygearsthatareavailabletooverridetheparkingbrake.Upshifting willnotchangetheselectedgearuntilthefrontwheelshavebeenalignedtotheleft-handjoystick andthesteeringhasbecomeactive.
