Choose Your Route to Success Everyone learns differently - so follow your heart and choose the path that’s right for you. This section will help you explore your options, understand the different course levels and see how each pathway can support your future goals.

A Levels (Sixth Form) If you have a genuine interest in your subjects, enjoy studying, can work independently and perform well in exams, an A Level programme could be the right choice for you. Our A Levels focus on facilitating subjects, helping the majority of our students progress to Russell Group universities and other leading institutions. You will typically study three A Level subjects. Please check individual course descriptions for full entry requirements.

Technical Apprenticeships Vocational Courses Like the idea of earning whilst you learn? An

Apprenticeship could be the perfect next step.

Do you prefer hands-on learning and being assessed through coursework rather than exams? Technical Vocational courses let you develop real skills, knowledge and experience linked directly to your chosen industry. You’ll study one qualification at a time, choosing from a wide range of subjects at Levels 1 to 3. With access to industry-standard facilities and real working environments, you’ll build the confidence and experience employers are looking for. Whether you’re aiming for a role in areas like engineering, healthcare, business or the creative industries, a Technical Vocational programme can help you get there.

T Levels Want to gain real experience whilst you study? A T Level can help you build the knowledge and practical skills employers value. This two-year qualification is equivalent to three A Levels and includes a substantial industry placement of at least 315 hours, giving you valuable insight into working life. Developed with employers, T Levels prepare you for skilled employment, a higher apprenticeship or university. Apprenticeships combine paid employment with training, helping you develop the skills and experience employers are looking for. You’ll work with a real employer whilst studying towards a recognised qualification, with opportunities available from Level 2 through to Level 6 (degree-level). After completing your Apprenticeship, you can progress into employment, continue to a higher-level Apprenticeship or move on to university.

Foundation Learning If you want to build your confidence and develop essential skills for the future, Foundation Learning could be the right place to start. Foundation Learning combines vocational tasters with English and Maths, digital skills and creative classes, helping you develop the knowledge, confidence and independence you need for further study or employment. You’ll focus on building personal, social and workplace skills in a supportive environment, giving you a strong foundation to progress onto higher-level courses or into work.

Entry Requirements The table below gives a guide to the typical GCSE entry requirements for our A Level, V Level, T Level, Technical Vocational, AAQ, Applied Qualification and Apprenticeship programmes. Apprenticeships - Level 2

Candidates should hold GCSEs, or equivalent qualifications, in Maths and English at Grade 2-3 (English Language or English Literature accepted). Exact requirements will vary depending on the subject..

Apprenticeships - Level 3

Candidates should hold GCSEs, or equivalent qualifications, in Maths and English at Grade 4 or above (English Language or English Literature accepted). Exact requirements will vary depending on the subject.

New Qualifications New Level 1–3 qualifications will be introduced nationally and available for enrolment as they roll out in phases between September 2027 and 2030.

Level 3: V Levels V Levels are two-year qualifications, similar to A Levels. They offer a more practical route to study and will be available to be taken alongside A Levels within a mix-and-match model.

Occupational Certificates will be a two-year study programme, designed for students wishing to enter employment. The extra year of study at this level will prepare students with the occupational skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to secure successful employment. Occupational Certificates will be achieved through:

They will focus upon gaining English and Maths qualifications, in addition to a subject-specific study to enable students to further study at Level 3. Foundation Certificates will be likely assessed through a range of: + Coursework/assignments + Practical or applied tasks + Some knowledge testing (e.g., exams or controlled assessments)

Level 1: English and Maths Stepping-stone qualifications are being considered for learners with GCSE Grades U–2, providing an additional year of English and Maths to support progression to a successful GCSE resit once a Grade 3 is achieved.

Get Set for Life with Why It’s Important: English and Maths

Employability Most jobs - from business and IT to healthcare, trades and retail - require everyday use of English Language and Maths. You might be writing emails, reading instructions, managing budgets or using formulas on the job.

No matter what course you choose, where you work or what career you build - strong English and Maths skills open doors. At Castleford College and Wakefield College, we make sure every student has the confidence and support to master these essential subjects. Whether you’re aiming for university, an apprenticeship or to go straight into a job, employers and higher education providers expect a solid level of English Language and Maths. That’s why achieving at least a Grade 4 (equivalent to a C) in both subjects at GCSE is a national benchmark - and a key part of your study programme if you haven’t already hit that mark.

Higher Education Colleges and universities often require GCSE English Language and Maths as entry criteria for degrees, Higher National Certificates/Diplomas or other qualifications. Confidence in Everyday Life From calculating bills to understanding contracts or expressing yourself clearly, these skills make life easier. What We Offer If you didn’t achieve Grade 4 in English Language and/or Maths at school, don’t worry - you’ll automatically continue working towards it here and we will support you every step of the way. You’re Not Doing It Alone We know re-sitting a subject can feel daunting. That’s why our tutors take a fresh, practical approach, ensuring that lessons are interactive and supportive. Please note, you won’t need to study GCSE English Language and Maths if you have achieved a Grade 4 or higher prior to starting your college course.

Getting to College Made Easy Travelling to college is straightforward, with both our Colleges having great transport links from Leeds, Pontefract, Barnsley and surrounding areas. Staff and students raised money for charity at the annual Colour Fun Run.

T Level Health students put their skills to the test during a visit to the University of Huddersfield.

Public Services students got stuck-in to high adrenaline activities during a trip to the coast.

Creative Media Production students used their digital skills to create assets for a marketing campaign to help promote the first-ever Reclaim the Night march in Wakefield.

Volunteering There are a lot of opportunities for students to get involved with community action at college. Previously, students have participated in Unloc’s Sustainability Student Leadership Academy where they learnt about carbon literacy and led their own sustainability projects in college and the local community.

Student Central Student Central is your one-stop hub for support throughout your time at college. You can access a range of services here including the Students Union, Financial Support, Work Placements, the Careers Team and Student Wellbeing.

Student Leaders & Student Voice Make the most of your college life by becoming a Student Leader and enjoy enrichment activities, clubs, social trips and special interest groups. Brand-new Construction Building In 2026, Castleford College unveiled a new building dedicated to Construction– the Lagentium Building – named after Castleford’s Roman fort. Beyond the Classroom Our Sixth Form students get ample opportunities to enjoy college life outside of the classroom. Students have explored options for their futures through university visits, career fairs and guest speakers as well as having fun on trips and days out.

Cultural Visits Our A Level Film and Media students visited the National Science and Media Museum to explore its exhibitions and learn about the history of film, media and photography.

Film Club

Students have visited universities across the country to consider their next steps in education. These have included the University of Law, Leeds Universities, University of Huddersfield, Durham University and more.

Sixth Form students host their very own Film Club once a fortnight where they discuss all things film, nominate discussion topics and share their passion for cinema.

At the Courts A Level Law students visit Leeds Crown Court each year to attend public viewing of cases, see how the courts operate day-to-day and learn about careers in Law.

Up in the Dales Geography students explored the beautiful Yorkshire Dales on one of their recent trips.

Insider: His Majesty’s Prison Wakefield  Each year, HMP Wakefield speak to our Social Sciences students about what its like to work in a prison, talking through their day-to-day roles, training toolkits and how they restrain and move prisonsers.

If you’re passionate about working with animals, our Animal Care course offers the perfect start. You’ll gain hands-on experience with a range of species whilst developing the knowledge and practical skills needed for careers in animal welfare, veterinary support, kennels, zoos or rescue centres.

Working Dogs Experience Our students often work with HM Prison Service Dogs which are search and detection dogs. Enrichment & Trips Childcare students get to visit local Forest Schools to teach children outside using their own learning activities. I’m enjoying having the opportunity to bring my ideas to life and make games I’ve always wanted to make. One of my favourite parts of Games Design is making levels, and I’ve been doing a lot of 3D modelling in and outside of college. Games design isn’t just about coding or research, I’ve also benefitted from doing writing and reflections. Game Development Students Take on a Real Industry Challenge Our Level 3 Game Development students recently had the exciting opportunity to work on a live industry brief set by award-winning games development studio, Radical Forge. As part of the project, students designed and developed their own original games, applying the skills they’ve been building in areas such as coding, gameplay mechanics and digital design.

Our annual Film Festival sees our students gathering at Mechanics’ Theatre to showcase their short films to the public.

As consumer trends shift towards easily consumable digital content, media companies are investing in the technology and skills to keep them at the forefront of the UK’s creative industries.

Our Creative Media Production students worked on a live client brief with Wakefield Council where they created digital website and social media assets to promote women’s safety campaign ‘Reclaim the Night’ in Wakefield. Enrichment Foundation Learning students will have the chance to take part in a range of enriching activities that will build independence, confidence and resilience. Get SET students organised and prepared a bake sale to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Research. They found a suitable location to hold the sale, completed a risk assessment and baked some delicious treats.

VOTE students held their own community project to raise funds for their Foundation Learning Community. After planning and partaking in a sponsored walk, students raised £150 to buy equipment for the Foundation Learning department.

Enrichment & Trips Whilst studying Hair & Beauty, there will be lots of enrichment opportunities. Students were given a piercing masterclass in which they had the chance to train on models to gain hands-on experience. Hair & Beauty students travelled across the world for an enriching trip to Tokyo. Students trained in a range of disciplines including hair care, hair colouring, hair counselling and Japanese-style makeup techniques.

46% of the workforce are aged 16-34, with the number of 16-24 year olds rising by 12% over the last year.

Travel & Tourism Students’ Once In A Lifetime Fiji Trip with Think Pacific 20 students from the Animal Care and Travel & Tourism departments at Wakefield College embarked on a once-ina-lifetime trip to Fiji, hosted by Think Pacific. The trip’s itinerary was specially tailored to the College’s Animal Care and Travel & Tourism provision – with activities encompassing eco-tourism, animal and wildlife care, sustainability and conservation. During the eighteen days, students and staff from the College explored the magnificent landscapes of the island such as the Rainforest Park, the Sand Dunes National Park, tropical gardens, coral reefs and bush trails.

Bon Voyage! Business and Travel & Tourism students enjoyed a trip to Disney Land Paris to learn about tourism, events and customer service. They had the opportunity to explore the park and rides as well as attend a conference with guest speakers who spoke on Disney careers and marketing! The world’s longest commercial flight is from Singapore to New York, covering 9,537 miles and taking around 18 hours and 40 minutes - long enough to watch 9 full-length movies!

Meet Kier Construction Apprentice of the Year

I chose an Apprenticeship because I wanted a hands-on learning experience that would also give me a qualification and allow me to earn straight away. Our College, Our Future Be part of the change At Castleford College and Wakefield College, we’re building a greener future, and our students are leading the way. Information For Parents

Giving Your Child The Best Start We hope this prospectus provides useful and reassuring information to help your child or ward transition smoothly into college life. Below is more information about the range of support we offer.

Safeguarding We provide a safe, respectful environment. Staff are trained to identify and respond to any safeguarding concerns swiftly and effectively.

Student ID All students receive a college ID card at enrolment and must wear it visibly on campus. This helps us maintain a safe and secure environment. Please remind your child/ward to bring it daily.

Financial Support Students aged 16–18 may qualify for a bursary which covers costs for travel, meals, equipment and trips. Please contact our Finance Team on 01924 789283 or at financialsupport@ heartofyorkshire.ac.uk for more information.

Additional Learning Support We offer tailored support and resources for students with additional needs, including specialist equipment and one-to-one support. Our staff have specialist skills and experience in supporting students with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities including ADHD, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia or Dyscalculia, Hearing Impairments, Visual Impairments and Mobility Difficulties. GCSE English & Maths Students who don’t achieve Grade 4+ in English and Maths will continue studying these as part of their course. This is a key requirement for many careers and university courses.
