You'll find Biddenden Vineyard at Gribble Bridge Lane, Biddenden, Kent, TN27 8DF
Tucked away amongst the beautiful Wealden countryside, Biddenden is a family-owned, and proudly independent vineyard that has been producing award-winning wines for more than 57 years - making them Kent's original commercial vineyard. Owned and run by The Barnes family, Biddenden Vineyards is surrounded by rolling countryside, inviting visitors to slow down, enjoy the scenery and savour incredible Kentish wines! Back in 1969, the Barnes family made a bold decision that would transform their farm. Originally home to a 40-acre apple orchard, falling apple prices prompted them to consider new opportunities and Joyce Barnes suggested planting vines instead. It was an ambitious idea at the time, but one that proved remarkably successful. Just a third of an acre of vines was planted, laying the foundations for what has become one of Kent’s most respected vineyards. Today, the estate spans 25 acres of gently sloping, south-facing vineyards nestled within a sheltered valley. It’s now run by the second and third generation of the Barnes family and they continue to blend decades of experience with a genuine passion for producing exceptional English wines. Despite growing production to around 80,000 bottles each year, the vineyard has never lost its hands-on approach. Every vine is still carefully tended by hand, from winter pruning and canopy management through to the autumn harvest.
5
"Built on decades of dedication by the Barnes family, Biddenden Vineyards reflects a commitment to quality that has never wavered. Their vision for producing exceptional English wines began long before the industry gained international recognition, and that pioneering spirit remains at the heart of the estate today”
Raising a glass to Biddenden Vineyards
This unique vineyard's charm lies not only in its award-winning wines but in the stories behind them...
If you are looking for a unique day out from Sevenoaks, this gorgeous vineyard is such an easy drive, leading through one of the county's prettiest corners. We visited the vineyard and were treated to an intimate private tour, where we wandered through the vines, learned about the winemaking process and were absolutely captivated by its unique and wholesome charm. Biddenden follows a true "grape-to-glass" philosophy, using only grapes grown on the estate to create its range of still and sparkling wines. Twelve different grape varieties thrive in the vineyard's sandy loam soils, including Bacchus, Pinot Noir, Dornfelder and Gamay. The Ortega has become the vineyard's signature variety. Covering more than half the estate, this aromatic German grape has helped define Biddenden's distinctive style and we would wholeheartedly recommend experiencing it for yourself.

Biddenden produces a delicious range of traditional Kentish ciders. They are crafted using the Barnes family recipe, which has been refined over four decades and are made using locally sourced culinary and dessert apples, creating a lighter, more wine-like character than many West Country ciders. Biddenden’s juice and non-alcoholic range have recently gone through a makeover and now captivates all things Kent; apples, pears, strawberries, grapes and mint are now all part of this exciting new range. Each product maintains Biddenden's unwavering commitment to quality: 100% Kentish fruit, no concentrate, and no artificial ingredients. Like everything else produced here, the emphasis is firmly on high quality and celebrating local growers. Experiencing the vineyard first-hand is such a great opportunity and their guided tours offer a great introduction to life behind the vines. You can stroll through the flagship Ortega vineyard before heading into the winery to discover how the wines are made, finishing with a tutored tasting of six carefully selected wines. If you're looking for a more personal experience, their private tours offer an exclusive behind-the-scenes look, guided by one of their knowledgeable team members. They also offer a "Meet the Winemaker" experience, giving guests the opportunity to explore the vineyard alongside the experts themselves and gain a fascinating insight into the winemaking process. After your tasting you can enjoy a sharing board featuring local cheese, charcuterie and accompaniments - it’s an ideal spot to linger a little longer before heading home! A stop at the vineyard shop is also a must too alongside the full range of Biddenden wines, ciders and juices, the shelves are stocked with carefully chosen local produce, from artisan cheeses and charcuterie to Kentish beers, gins, chutneys and seasonal treats. .
September is a wonderful time to visit Biddenden Vineyards, with bookings now open throughout the month and the excitement of harvest in full swing. Looking ahead to autumn and winter, the vineyard is also preparing to launch their new ‘Behind the Glass’ production tours — an exclusive opportunity to discover the craft and care behind the wines, ciders and juices, with behind-thescenes access during the quieter off-season. What makes Biddenden so appealing is the sense of authenticity that comes from generations of one family caring deeply about the land and what it produces. Long before English wine was winning international awards, the Barnes family believed Kent could produce something truly special and more than half a century later, that belief continues to flourish! STEINS AT THE READY
at Westerham Brewery's Oktoberfest!
Ah, Oktoberfest - the one time of year when it’s perfectly acceptable (encouraged, even) to don lederhosen, toast strangers with steins the size of small buckets and eat your bodyweight in bratwurst!
Born in Munich in 1810 to celebrate a royal wedding, Oktoberfest began as a five-day party featuring horse racing and of course, beer. Unsurprisingly, the beer part proved the most popular. More than two centuries later, it has grown into the world’s largest beer festival, with its Bavarian spirit spreading far beyond Germany.
given a modern twist by Deutsch Blasmusik, authentic German favourites including bratwurst, schnitzel and sauerkraut from Meat the Chef, and plenty of locally brewed beer served by the stein-load.
Here in the UK, Oktoberfest has found a very welcoming home. Perhaps it’s our shared appreciation for a hearty pint, a sausage in a bun and an excuse to wear fancy dress without worrying about the weather. Whatever the reason, Bavarianinspired celebrations have sprung up across the country and Westerham Brewery is hosting one that promises to be a cracker. This year they are holding not one but two Oktoberfeststyle celebrations on 26th September and 3rd October.
With food and drinks available to buy throughout the event, you can make the day as laid-back or as lively as you like. Better still, reserve a table for up to 10 friends and enjoy the full Oktoberwest experience together.
Expect the full Bavarian experience, with traditional Oompah music
7
Not a beer drinker? There’ll also be wines, ciders, spirits and soft drinks available throughout the day.
And yes, dressing up is very much encouraged. Dust off your dirndl or squeeze into those lederhosen — there’ll be games, prizes and plenty of photo opportunities to prove you embraced the occasion. Tickets are on sale now, so gather your friends and raise a glass to beer, bratwurst and a little Bavarian mayhem!

PENSIONS FROM APRIL 2027 – NO NEED TO PANIC. Andrew Miedzinski Director of Oculus Wealth (Home Counties) Ltd Independent financial advisory practice, based in Sevenoaks From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will be included in your estate for Inheritance Tax (IHT) purposes. While this represents a significant policy shift, there is no need for panic. Understanding what is changing, who is affected and what steps to take now will help you respond calmly and effectively.
other assets against these thresholds; there is no separate, lower pension allowance. For many families, especially where the main residence already uses much of the allowance, the marginal effect may be limited.
What is changing
The changes are more likely to affect those with significant unused pension wealth relative to other assets, or those who are single, widowed, or divorced and cannot fully use spouse exemptions. There can also be an interaction with income tax: for deaths at 75 or older, beneficiaries may face both IHT and income tax, leading to high combined rates in some scenarios.
Currently, unused pension savings and most lump-sum death benefits fall outside your estate for IHT. Beneficiaries typically receive them free of IHT, although income tax may apply depending on your age at death. From April 2027, these funds will be treated as part of your estate. If your total estate exceeds available IHT thresholds, the excess may be taxed at up to 40%. The change applies only to deaths on or after 6 April 2027. Why you do not need to panic Several key exemptions remain unchanged. Pension benefits passing to a surviving spouse or civil partner remain IHT-exempt, as do benefits left to registered charities. Most death-in-service lump sums also remain outside the estate. For many couples, the main IHT impact will arise on the second death, when remaining pension wealth joins other assets. Your IHT thresholds are also unchanged: a nil-rate band of £325,000 per person, plus a residence nil-rate band of up to £175,000 where a home passes to direct descendants. Combined, couples can benefit from up to £1 million in allowances. Pensions will simply be aggregated with
When it matters more
What to do now You do not need to make rushed decisions, but a structured review is advisable. Gather your numbers: pension values, other assets, liabilities, and existing Will provisions. Clarify your goals for retirement income and legacy intentions. Speak to your financial adviser, who can model scenarios and discuss options such as adjusting drawdown strategies, using ISAs more efficiently, updating Wills and beneficiary nominations, or considering lifetime gifting. The right response is not panic, but a calm, evidence-based review of your overall plan with your adviser.

DISCOVERING LIFE AFTER WORK by Bryan Rawlins
University of the Third Age
Coming up to retirement can be a scary time for many. When my time came it wasn’t because of the reduction in income that really worried me it was the loss of identity. For decades, work had been part of my life it gave me a role, I had developed skills that were needed and most importantly it gave me a routine, all of this was wrapped up in a job title. Who I was and what I did, and I asked myself “who am I when I’m not doing that anymore? Work gave me a structure, a time to wake up, things to get done, people to help, problems to solve and a place to socialise with. The idea of a blank calendar might sound lovely but it’s scary. The only time I ever felt like that was when I left a busy office to start my own business. On my first day I sat at my new desk with nothing on it but a phone and no pile of paperwork to get stuck into. Would my skills and knowledge be sufficient to get people to pay for them and how would I get them to ring my phone. That morning was very quiet until I went out to face the world. Retirement marks the end of a 50 year chapter and a new identity and purpose had to be built and that’s when I was introduced to the international movement of the U3A. This gave me the chance to do some of the things I really wanted to do and not just the need to earn money. I became a mentor, a learner, a contributor and a leader of an interest group in which I could share some of my skills, ideas and energy. It gave me a new identity that grew rather than shrunk.
9
One of hardest part of retirement is that empty calendar and the U3A filled that with regular meetings, interest talks to listen to, outings to go to interesting places, projects to fulfil and commitments that gave me a new purpose. The Group replaced workmates with a new community. New people to meet to share interests, enjoy new views, meet people who want to learn a new skill or improve an interest which you didn’t have interest at work. The first group I joined was the birdwatching group where I was amazed at the wide knowledge of the others in the group, this made outings to birdwatch sites so much more interesting than being on your own. The second was the camera group where they shared their years of experience and set projects and tasks to be completed. This was invaluable during the period of confinement of 2020 when trying to take a picture of a drop of water hitting a surface took hours to set up and achieve. Retirement can feel like your brain is slowing down but the U3A keeps it alive with new hobbies while learning new skills. It opens new doors and I was able to explore new interests. We are lucky to have two U3A’s in Sevenoaks which offer different groups and opportunities. I belong to Knole u3a and we will be holding an open afternoon in September which would give you the opportunity to learn more or contact us via our website - www.knoleU3A.org.uk

“If you're looking for somewhere new to discover this autumn, Canvas in Tunbridge Wells offers a unique dining experience that stays with you long after you've left the table!”
A PERFECT CELEBRATION From the stylish décor to expertly crafted cocktails and beautiful dishes, everything this lovely team does reflects genuine passion!
Wine lovers are equally well catered for too. Personally curated by David and Jay, the carefully considered wine list reflects their genuine passion for pairing food and wine. Every bottle has been selected because it complements the restaurant’s style of cooking, enhancing each dish and creating a wonderfully rounded dining experience. To start our meal we tried the gilt-head bream crudo, served with melon, shiso,
lime and sesame, alongside a chilled gazpacho with salsa, croutons and a drizzle of olive oil. Both dishes were wonderfully fresh, vibrant and full of flavour! For the mains, the tandoori monkfish with saffron, cauliflower, spiced lentils and raita was a real standout, showcasing David's creativity and imagination with flavour pairings. We also enjoyed the crispy pork belly, paired with apple, fennel, apricot, black pudding, which was
delicious and delivered rich flavours with every bite. We finished on a high with two desserts. The lime and elderflower parfait with strawberries and brandy was wonderfully light and refreshing, while the tiramisu cocktail, served with clotted cream ice cream and cocoa, put a creative spin on a much-loved classic. We also sampled one of Jay's signature margaritas, which was outstanding!
Canvas also offers a beautifully designed private dining room upstairs - an elegant and intimate setting for celebrations - it’s the perfect setting for creating memorable moments this autumn!”

TAI CHI: AN INVESTMENT IN YOURSELF By Lionel O’Hara
Some people know me because they have attended the open air Tai Chi classes on The Vine, fundraising for The Hospice in the Weald, others as a Town Councillor and Parish Councillor, or a very busy family man. So how do I stay sane?…The answer is Tai Chi. For decades, I have been involved in various martial arts. Now, I remain focused on Tai Chi and Qigong both are related Chinese mind-body practices. Tai Chi is spelt many different ways and Qigong is also spelt different ways. The word Qigong can be broken down into two syllables, Qi pronounced Chee and gong. There are probably over a thousand different styles and disciplines of Qigong, I specialise in Shibashi-Qigong. Shibashi translates to 18 in Mandarin, representing 18 distinct movements, combining the grace and philosophy of Tai Chi with breathwork and energy cultivation of Qigong. I still travel up to London, across to South West England up to Birmingham or down to the South Coast, anywhere to improve myself, but I am a bit obsessed. Why should anyone attend my classes, when there are lots of teachers available, all over the Country, some far more advanced, some less so, because with some teachers you will find a connection, others might not fit your expectation, that’s why it’s important to explore what’s out there, you might get lucky and click with a certain teacher and with the others in your class.
Everything I teach is done slowly, including breathwork, which in itself has proved to be exceptionally powerful, together with the coordination of movements that resemble the leaves of a willow tree in the wind which seamlessly flow. You will learn how to release stress and tension from your shoulders, and even your hands. I end the classes with a few minutes of seated guided meditation. All my classes are friendly, relaxed and sprinkled with happy faces and the sound of laughter. There's no pressure, no competition, no belts to be won, and absolutely no expectation to remember strange Chinese words like Dan Tian, Kua or Bai Hui which will occasionally pop up. Many of the moves also have names like Repulse Monkey, Parting Clouds, Grasp the bird's tail or Single whip as its all been passed down over the centuries from distant mountains in China. Some people attend classes because they are curious, others just need to relax. After a few sessions their focus changes and they become inquisitive about the purposes behind the movements, then after a few more sessions their practice begins to flow a little easier and purposefully. From an instructor's position this transformation is beautiful to watch, highly rewarding making it all so worthwhile. What you can expect?
Classes are currently held in Sevenoaks on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the possibility of adding another day, so just ask.. Plus I run classes for WU3A members, in Westerham. I visit care homes teaching staff and residents and offer local businesses the same services for their employees. Feedback “I thoroughly enjoy classes with Lionel. If you are an experienced forager, or simply curious about exploring the outdoors in a new way, learning to identify and harvest wild foods can be both rewarding and delicious. Grab a basket, head into the countryside and discover the incredible flavours nature has to offer!
A rewarding way to enjoy the countryside... Foraging is a wonderful way to connect with the countryside while discovering a variety of fresh, seasonal ingredients growing right on your doorstep. Local woodlands, meadows and hedgerows provide an incredible variety of edible wild foods throughout the seasons. With a little knowledge and a sense of adventure, foraging can become a rewarding way to enjoy the countryside while bringing unique, seasonal ingredients to your table. Wild mushrooms Chanterelles (Cantharellus cibarius) The ones to look out for in particular are the Chanterelles. These golden-yellow mushrooms are among the most prized finds for foragers. With a delicate, slightly peppery flavour, they work beautifully in risottos, pasta dishes, and creamy sauces. Chanterelles are often found in damp woodland, particularly near oak, birch and beech trees. Porcini (Boletus edulis) Also known as penny buns, porcini mushrooms are highly sought after for their rich, nutty taste and meaty texture. They are excellent in stews, soups, and pasta dishes and can be dried for yearround use. Wood Blewits (Lepista nuda) Recognisable by their distinctive lilac colouring, wood blewits appear during autumn and thrive among leaf litter and woodland clearings. When cooked, they offer a mild, aromatic flavour. Hedgehog Mushrooms (Hydnum repandum) Named after the tiny spines beneath
their caps, hedgehog mushrooms have a sweet, nutty taste and are ideal for frying, roasting, or adding to omelettes. Edible Plants and Herbs Wild Garlic One of spring's most celebrated wild foods, wild garlic carpets many woodland floors with vibrant green leaves and distinctive white flowers. The leaves can be used in pestos, soups, salads, and flavoured butters. Nettles Despite their sting, young nettle leaves are packed with nutrients and can be cooked in much the same way as spinach. They are commonly used in soups, pasta dishes, and teas. Sorrel Known for its fresh, lemony flavour, sorrel grows in meadows and grasslands and makes an excellent addition to salads, sauces, and fish dishes. Chickweed A common plant found in gardens and hedgerows, chickweed has a mild flavour that works well in salads and sandwiches. Edible Flowers Many wildflowers are not only beautiful but also edible. • Primrose flowers can be used to decorate cakes and desserts. • Elderflowers are perfect for making refreshing cordials and sparkling drinks. • Violets add colour and fragrance to salads and sweet treats. • Dandelion flowers can be used in syrups, fritters, and traditional country wines.
JUST REMEMBER...
Always forage responsibly by taking only what you need, avoiding protected areas and leaving plenty behind for wildlife and future growth!
T OP T I P S Before collecting any wild food, it's essential to learn how to identify species accurately. Many edible plants and mushrooms have poisonous lookalikes, so investing in a reliable field guide, or joining a local foraging group is highly recommended. Foraging Safely and Sustainably • Never eat any wild plant or mushroom unless you are completely certain of its identification. • Avoid collecting from roadsides, industrial sites, or land that may have been treated with pesticides or chemicals. • Take only small amounts and leave enough for wildlife and natural regeneration. • Respect private property and always seek permission where required. • Beginners should consider attending a guided foraging walk to build their identification skills.

...Cook up a storm!
29
One of the greatest pleasures of foraging is transforming freshly gathered ingredients into delicious seasonal dishes that celebrate the natural flavours of the countryside. Wild mushrooms, wild garlic, and fresh herbs can be combined with creamy Arborio rice to create a rich and satisfying woodland risotto, perfect for a comforting meal.
Another wholesome option is a nourishing foraged soup, made with a mixture of mushrooms, nettles, herbs, and seasonal greens, offering a true taste of the landscape and the changing seasons.
Foraged wild garlic also makes an excellent pesto when blended with olive oil, nuts, Parmesan cheese and a squeeze of lemon juice, creating a versatile sauce that pairs beautifully with pasta, fish, or roasted vegetables.
Whether preparing a hearty risotto, a vibrant pesto, or a comforting soup, foraged ingredients bring unique tastes and a deeper connection to the natural world.
Cooking with your foraged harvest allows you to make the most of nature’s seasonal bounty while creating fresh, flavourful meals.

The Autumn I Was Not Prepared For By Riya Bhilware A year after arriving in Kent from India, Riya Bhilware writes about the country she had only ever read about — and the stranger who told her what to look for.
T
he trees here do not simply fade. They catch.
Copper, rust, a red so deep it looks lit from within. The whole of Kent goes up slowly over three weeks, like a fire nobody is in any hurry to put out. Nobody had warned me about this. Eight thousand kilometres away, in India, I had already read this country. I knew the rain and the red buses and the grey churches with their fingers in the sky. Everyone does. In every corner of the world someone can name these towns, and half of them are quietly hoping to walk here one day. I was one of them, and I had made my peace with it staying a wish. I landed at Heathrow last September and was driven down into Kent, and almost nothing of that first hour survives except the quiet. Green, and endless, and quiet. The fields kept arriving. Nothing here is new. Lanes run between hedges that were planted when Shakespeare was alive, and the oast houses stand about in the fields with their white cowls turned like heads, still watching for a wind that stopped mattering a century ago. Footpaths cut straight across private farmland because they always have, and nobody finds this remarkable but me. They call Kent the Garden of England. I assumed this was the kind of thing a place says about itself. It is not.

floor deciding on one colour at once, and wisteria drips off the front of houses like something spilt. June belongs to roses, which grow here with no restraint, leaning over walls into the path of strangers. The gardens face outwards. People plant them for the street: for the postman, the schoolchildren, the woman walking her dog, for someone three weeks in the country who knows nobody. A whole nation quietly leaving out something beautiful for people it will never meet. On my first day at the university, a woman crossed the road towards my friend and me, walking fast, as though she had been sent. She had come to tell us about the black birds. There were a great many here, she said — crow-like, but not crows — and we were to be sure to look out for them. Then she carried on. I think about her more than she could possibly know. Now it is autumn again. The hedgerows hang heavy with blackberries and hips and small red beads, conkers split open on the pavements, and somewhere there is always woodsmoke. By four the sky has gone pink above the rooftops and the whole town glows like a lamp left on. At dusk the black birds go up out of the bare trees all at once, like scraps of burnt paper, and the noise of them carries half a mile. Nobody looks up. It is a Tuesday. She was right. They are worth looking out for.
In January, when the ground is still hard, snowdrops arrive, small and white and absurdly brave. By March the daffodils have taken

GOLDEN GOODNESS
The Growing Popularity of Turmeric Lattes
The turmeric latte combines comforting flavours, simple ingredients and endless customisation options which can be enjoyed as a morning pick-me-up, an afternoon treat, or a relaxing evening drink. Easy to prepare at home, they can be customised with ingredients such as vanilla, coconut milk, or chai spices to suit individual tastes. One of the best things about turmeric lattes is their adaptability. By changing a few ingredients, you can create a variety of delicious flavours. Turmeric, the star ingredient, is a bright yellow spice derived from the root of the turmeric plant. Its earthy flavour pairs beautifully with milk and aromatic spices, creating a drink that is both indulgent and nourishing.
How to Make a Classic Turmeric Latte Creating a turmeric latte at home is simple and requires only a few ingredients, including: • 250ml milk (dairy or plant-based) • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon • A pinch of ground ginger • A pinch of black pepper • 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (optional) Gently heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and black pepper, whisking continuously until fully combined. Simmer for three to five minutes without boiling. Remove from the heat, stir in honey or maple syrup if desired and pour into a mug!
INSPIRATION FOR YOUR NEXT CUP
Vanilla Turmeric Latte Add half a teaspoon of vanilla extract for a smooth, sweet flavour that complements the spices perfectly. Coconut Golden Milk Replace regular milk with coconut milk to create a rich and creamy drink with a subtle tropical twist. Spiced Chai Turmeric Latte Add cardamom, cloves, and nutmeg to create a chai-inspired version packed with warming aromas. Iced Turmeric Latte Allow the mixture to cool before pouring it over ice. This refreshing variation is perfect for warmer days.
The turmeric latte, often referred to as "golden milk," has become a popular beverage among health-conscious consumers seeking a soothing and flavourful alternative to coffee. With its vibrant golden colour and blend of warming spices, this comforting drink has roots in traditional Ayurvedic practices and is enjoyed around the world for its rich taste and versatility.

FEEL YOUR BEST
HAPPY GUT HAPPY MIND THE TINY ORGANISMS RUNNING THE SHOW
G
ut health is one of the hottest wellness topics around and for good reason! Inside your digestive system lives a vast community of trillions of bacteria, fungi and other microbes known as the gut microbiome. While that might sound unsettling, these tiny organisms play a vital role in keeping us healthy. Scientists now know the microbiome does far more than aid digestion: it helps regulate the immune system, produces essential vitamins and generates compounds that influence inflammation and metabolism. One of the most fascinating discoveries is the gut-brain axis, a communication network linking the gut and the brain. This connection helps explain why stress can upset the stomach and why many mood-related chemicals, including serotonin, are closely linked to the digestive system. So how can you support a healthy gut? Fibre-rich foods such as fruit, vegetables, beans, nuts and whole grains provide fuel for beneficial bacteria. Fermented foods, including yoghurt, kefir, kimchi and sauerkraut, contain live cultures that may help maintain a diverse and balanced microbiome.
Easy Ways to Keep Your Gut Happy 33
The best news? You don't need expensive supplements or drastic lifestyle changes. Small steps, from eating more plants, to staying active, can make a real difference. As research continues, one thing is becoming clear: looking after your gut supports far more than digestion - it benefits your overall health and wellbeing.

Keeping your gut happy is easier than you
might think!
GUT FRIENDLY FOODS AND WHY THEY WORK
While “you are what you eat” might sound like an old cliché, science is increasingly showing that a healthy gut can play a surprisingly important role in how we feel. Feed it plenty of fibre, colourful fruit and veg and a few fermented favourites, then top it off with good sleep and regular exercise. Your microscopic housemates will thank you for it.
The old saying “you are what you eat” might not be so far from the truth. After all, a thriving gut can play a big role in how we feel every day.
Kombucha
Kimchi
Garlic
Kombucha is a fermented tea made using bacteria and yeast cultures. It contains organic acids and live microbes that may help support gut health. While research is ongoing, many people enjoy it as a refreshing alternative to sugary soft drinks.
Korea’s national dish is a spicy, fermented powerhouse. Kimchi delivers probiotics, antioxidants and vitamins A and C. Its chilli kick also helps metabolism, while fibre supports digestion.
Garlic is a prebiotic food, meaning it feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut. It also has natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a double win for immunity and digestion.
Sauerkraut
Kefir
Miso
This tangy fermented cabbage isn’t just for topping hot dogs. Sauerkraut is loaded with probiotics and fibre, both of which support a healthy microbiome. It’s also rich in vitamin C, giving your immunity a nice seasonal boost.
Kefir is a fermented milk drink packed with a diverse range of beneficial bacteria and yeasts. Research suggests it may help increase microbial diversity in the gut. Its tangy flavour makes it an excellent addition to smoothies, breakfasts or healthy snacks.
Miso is a traditional Japanese paste made from fermented soybeans. It contains beneficial microbes produced during fermentation, along with protein and minerals. Commonly used in soups and sauces, miso can add flavour to meals while supporting a healthy and diverse gut microbiome.

GIVE YOUR HOME AN AUTUMN REFRESH
As the days become shorter and the
temperatures begin to drop, autumn is the perfect excuse to give your home a seasonal update. The good news is you don't need to spend a fortune and a few simple changes can create a warm, welcoming space that's perfect for those cosy evenings and family gatherings this season!
LAYER UP!
REFRESH YOUR FRONT DOOR
As the weather cools, swapping lightweight summer fabrics for softer, warmer textures can instantly change the feel of a room. Drape chunky knit throws over sofas and armchairs, add velvet or corduroy cushions and consider a thicker rug underfoot. These simple additions make your home feel more inviting while adding warmth without turning the heating up.
Your home's entrance sets the tone before anyone even steps inside. A handmade autumn wreath, a couple of lanterns and a selection of pumpkins or seasonal plants can instantly brighten your doorstep. It's a quick weekend project that adds plenty of kerb appeal and creates a welcoming first impression throughout the season!
INTRODUCE RICH AUTUMN COLOURS
HAVE AN AUTUMN DECLUTTER
You don't have to redecorate to embrace the season. Accessories in earthy shades like burnt orange, deep green, mustard yellow, chocolate brown and warm burgundy can completely transform a space. New cushion covers, table runners, candles, or even a simple vase in autumnal tones are an inexpensive way to reflect the changing season.
Before winter arrives, take the opportunity to pack away summer accessories and clear out anything you no longer use. Store away beach towels, picnic baskets and lightweight décor, leaving shelves and surfaces feeling tidier. A clutter-free home feels calmer, makes seasonal decorating easier and helps create a more relaxing environment.
BRING NATURE INDOORS
TRY A SIMPLE DIY CRAFT
One of the joys of autumn is the beautiful colours outside, so why not bring some of that indoors? Collect colourful leaves, pinecones, seed heads and branches during a weekend walk and display them in glass jars or decorative bowls. Pair them with pumpkins, gourds or dried flowers to create elegant seasonal displays that cost very little but have plenty of impact!
Autumn is the perfect time to tackle those small DIY jobs you've been putting off. Refresh an old side table with a coat of paint, update picture frames, or make your own seasonal centrepiece using dried flowers and foliage. These easy projects add character to your home and can often be completed in just an afternoon.
CREATE A SOFTER FEEL
Refreshing your home for autumn doesn't have to mean a complete makeover, or a hefty price tag. A few simple seasonal touches can make your space feel warm, cosy and welcoming.
D i sc o ve r mo re in S e ve no ak s
With darker evenings arriving earlier, lighting becomes much more important. Instead of relying on bright ceiling lights, use table lamps, fairy lights and candles to create a warm, relaxing glow. Warm white bulbs help make living spaces feel cosy, while lanterns and battery-operated candles add atmosphere safely throughout the home.
EMBRACE THOSE SEASONAL SCENTS! Few things say autumn quite like the comforting aroma of cinnamon, apple and vanilla. Scented candles, reed diffusers and essential oil burners are all great options, but you can also make your own natural fragrance by gently simmering orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks and star anise in a saucepan. It's a simple way to make your whole home feel all warm and inviting!
From soft furnishings and rich autumn colours, to natural decorations, gentle lighting and comforting scents, it's easy to embrace the season. Autumn is also the ideal time to make the most of the season by shopping local. Check out local village markets which are often filled with pumpkins, seasonal flowers and handmade home accessories that can add a unique touch to your décor! Here are a few easy ideas to help you create the perfect autumn retreat at home...

Prepping your garden for winter
As the last of the summer f lowers begin to fade and the mornings in Sevenoaks become crisp, it's time to start thinking about getting the garden ready for winter. While it can be tempting to leave everything until spring, spending a few weekends outdoors now will make a huge difference when the warmer weather returns!
TOP TIPS FOR WINTER GARDEN SUCCESS Work with Kent's clay soil Many gardens across Sevenoaks sit on heavy clay, which can become waterlogged over winter. Adding compost or well-rotted manure in autumn helps improve drainage and makes the soil much easier to work next spring. Plant spring bulbs before the frosts arrive Daffodils, crocuses and tulips planted in October and November will brighten your borders just in time for spring walks around Knole and the North Downs.
Autumn is one of our favourite times to be in the garden. The trees around Knole Park are full of colour, the air is fresh, and there's something really satisfying about tidying borders and knowing everything is tucked away ready for the colder months ahead. One of the first jobs is clearing away any dead or diseased plants. Leaving them in place can encourage pests and fungal diseases to over winter, causing problems next year. Healthy plant material can usually be added to your compost heap, while anything affected by disease is best disposed of separately. Now is also the perfect time to give your lawn some attention. Rake up fallen leaves regularly, especially after windy days, as they can smother the grass and encourage moss. If your lawn has become compacted after a busy summer, using a garden fork to aerate the soil will help improve drainage during the wetter winter months too. Your flower beds will always thank you for a little extra care! Adding a generous layer of compost or well-rotted manure around shrubs and perennial plants helps protect roots from frost while improving the soil -it’s one of those simple jobs that you’ll thank yourself for doing when everything bursts back into life next spring. If you've been growing vegetables, now is the time to harvest any remaining crops before the first hard frosts arrive. Empty beds can be covered with compost or mulch, giving the soil plenty of nutrients over winter and making spring planting much easier. Garden wildlife also deserves a helping hand at this time of year. Birds, hedgehogs and insects all rely on our gardens for food and shelter during the colder months. Leaving a small pile of logs, keeping a corner a little wild, or installing a bird feeder can make a real difference. Watching robins and blue tits visiting the garden on a frosty morning is one of winter's simple pleasures!
Protect tender plants from chilly frosts Gardens in lower-lying parts of Sevenoaks can experience colder overnight temperatures. Wrap delicate shrubs with horticultural fleece and move pots closer to sheltered walls where possible. Give local wildlife a helping hand Hedgehogs, robins and blue tits are common visitors in Kent gardens. Leave a small log pile or a quiet corner of the garden undisturbed to provide shelter during the colder months. Keep drains and gutters clear Autumn leaves can quickly block drains after windy weather. Clearing them regularly helps prevent standing water around patios and borders during wet winter spells. Clean your tools before storing them away A quick clean and sharpen now means you'll be ready to get back outside as soon as those first warm weekends arrive. Plan for colour next spring Visit one of the many local garden centres around Sevenoaks for inspiration and stock up on bulbs and hardy winter plants before the busiest spring season begins.
Don’t forget to think ahead as autumn is actually one of the best times to plant spring bulbs. Daffodils, tulips and crocuses all benefit from being planted before winter sets in, rewarding you with colour just when the garden needs it most. It's an easy way to give yourself something to look forward to after the darker months. Winter is a chance for the garden to rest and for us to slow down a little too! With a bit of preparation now, you'll spend less time fixing problems next year and more time enjoying those first signs of spring.

MEET THE MAKERS
“Inspired by the beauty of natural materials, Sarah transforms raw timber into unique custom projects and eye-catching home accessories”
Sawn by Sarah Hidden behind every handcrafted piece from Sawn by Sarah is a story of resilience, creativity and a genuine love for working with wood. Sarah's woodworking journey began, like many unexpected passions, during lockdown in 2021. What started as a chance discovery quickly became something much bigger. Armed with determination, curiosity and plenty of patience, she taught herself the craft, spending countless hours learning new techniques and developing her own distinctive style. Just a year later, Sarah found herself in the national spotlight as a contestant on Channel 4's Britain's Best Woodworker, giving
her the opportunity to test her skills alongside talented makers from across the country. The experience proved to be both exciting and challenging, strengthening her confidence and inspiring her to keep pushing her craft forward. Sarah's story is about much more than woodworking. A stage three cervical cancer survivor, she credits that experience with changing her outlook on life and encouraging her to focus on the things that truly matter. In 2023, she was also diagnosed with ADHD, a moment she describes as a revelation. Understanding how her mind works has helped her embrace woodworking not only as a creative outlet, but also as a mindful practice that brings calm, focus and balance.
LOVE LOCAL THIS AUTUMN ...and Support Creatives in Sevenoaks!
Today, Sarah specialises in handcrafted live-edge wood and resin pieces, each one completely unique. From beautifully finished serving boards to bespoke home décor and custom commissions, her work celebrates the natural character of the timber she uses - they are truly stunning and no two pieces are ever quite the same.

What stands out most is Sarah's belief that every piece of wood has its own story. Rather than forcing the material into a design, she works with its natural grain, shape and imperfections, allowing its character to shine through. The result is a collection of pieces that feel personal and thoughtful. Sarah also enjoys collaborating with fellow makers, bringing fresh ideas and inspiration into her work while continuing to learn and evolve as a craftsperson. For anyone looking to add something truly special to their home, Sawn by Sarah offers beautifully crafted pieces made with skill, care and heart! You can find out more at: www.sawnbysarah.com

THOUGHTFUL ILLUSTRATIONS FOR LIFE'S MILESTONES
Feather Ink combines thoughtful design with delicate illustration, to create bespoke pieces that celebrate personal stories and special moments! Founded by watercolour artist Jo in 2019, Feather.ink began in the most natural of ways. Six months after the birth of her first child, she picked up her watercolours to paint a personalised birthday card for her godson. The letter "H" was brought to life through a collection of animals, creating a unique keepsake rather than simply another greeting card. Soon afterwards, she painted an "S" for her niece, filling it with animals beginning with that letter as she prepared to start school. Without realising it, Jo had created what would become her much-loved Animal Alphabet collection! From those first thoughtful gifts, a creative hobby quickly evolved into a flourishing small business. Drawing on her background in graphic design, Jo launched Feather.ink on Instagram, documenting every step of the journey as the brand developed from a nameless idea into the business it is today. Her passion for thoughtful design shines through in every commission, with each piece telling a personal story.
Today, one of Jo's focusses is on wedding stationery and 2026 has seen the launch of Jo's live illustrating at weddings and events. Jo loves to work with couples at all stages of their wedding planning. Either from the save the dates, or for the onthe-day stationery. Each couple is unique and each stationery set personal to them. Jo has loved every step of the journey that has brought her to now be able to attend her clients' weddings and paint their guests, giving them that wonderfully personalised keepsake to take home with them. You will find Jo featured in 'The Little White Book' a luxury editorial for couples looking for inspiration and a go-to wedding directory. Feather.ink also offers an extensive range of bespoke illustrations and stationery, making it easy to find the perfect gift. For those wishing to gift couples celebrating an engagement or wedding, Jo also creates beautifully illustrated maps highlighting meaningful places and shared adventures, alongside illustrations of wedding venues and churches that become treasured reminders of the big day! BRILLIANT BRITISH APPLES & PEARS A walk through a local orchard is one of autumn's greatest pleasures and many local producers welcome visitors during harvest season, offering opportunities to sample fresh juice, cider and hand-picked fruit straight from the trees. Many traditional orchards continue to produce wonderful varieties, from crisp eating apples to beautifully tart cooking apples such as Bramleys. Kentish pears, including conference and concorde varieties, offer sweet, juicy flavours that are equally delicious enjoyed fresh or transformed into comforting seasonal dishes. Shopping at local farm shops and farmers' markets not only guarantees exceptional freshness but also supports local growers who carefully nurture these historic orchards seasonal fruit picked at the right time develops deeper flavours, making every recipe taste that little bit better! Apples and pears are remarkably versatile ingredients. Apples bring natural sweetness and gentle acidity to crumbles, pies and chutneys, while pears pair wonderfully with warming spices such as cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. They also complement savoury dishes perfectly this time of year, adding sweetness to roasted vegetables, pork, blue cheese and walnut salads. If you may be (or live with) a keen home cook, this season offers the perfect opportunity to preserve the harvest. Homemade jams, fruit butters and chutneys make thoughtful gifts too!

A little inspiration on what to do with your freshly picked fruit! Classic Kent Apple Crumble
Pear and Blue Cheese Salad
A comforting apple crumble is a true autumn favourite. Peel, core and slice six cooking apples, placing them in a greased baking dish with two tablespoons of caster sugar and a teaspoon of ground cinnamon. For the topping, rub together 200g plain flour, 100g cold butter and 100g light brown sugar until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
Create an easy seasonal lunch by combining mixed salad leaves with two sliced ripe pears, a handful of toasted walnuts and crumbled blue cheese. Whisk together three tablespoons of olive oil, one tablespoon of cider vinegar, a teaspoon of wholegrain mustard and a drizzle of local honey to make a simple dressing. Toss gently before serving. The sweetness of the pears balances the richness of the cheese beautifully, while the walnuts add crunch.
Sprinkle evenly over the fruit and bake at 180°C for around 40 minutes until golden and bubbling. Serve warm with thick custard, cream or vanilla ice cream. For extra texture, stir a handful of chopped hazelnuts or oats into the crumble topping before baking.
Serve with crusty bread or alongside roasted chicken for an elegant autumn meal that comes together in just a few minutes.
Bramley Apple and Parsnip Soup

Simmer for around 25 minutes until the vegetables are tender, then blend until smooth. Stir in a splash of double cream if desired and season with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve with lots of warm crusty bread and a sprinkle of fresh parsley for a satisfying autumn dinner!

THEN & NOW By Matthew Ball The Sevenoaks History Hub began in the summer of 2020 by Matthew Ball, as a Facebook page dedicated to sharing the history of Sevenoaks, Riverhead and Seal. Since then, it has grown into an online community of more than 3,000 followers, bringing together people with a shared interest in the town's past. Through the page, historic photographs, postcards and documents - mainly dating from the Victorian period through to the late twentieth century - are regularly shared, with followers encouraged to contribute their own memories, family stories and local knowledge. These conversations often uncover details that might otherwise have been lost, helping to identify the people, places and events shown in the photographs. The Hub has also expanded to include the Sevenoaks History Hub website, where longer articles explore the people and places that have shaped the local community. Alongside the website, the book Sevenoaks, Riverhead & Seal in Old Photos and Postcards brings together many of these

historic images with memories from local residents, helping to bring them vividly to life! The aim of the Sevenoaks History Hub is not simply to record old buildings or dates, but to tell the stories of the ordinary people who lived and worked in Sevenoaks, illustrating how the town has evolved from a traditional Kent market town into the community it is today. While much has changed, familiar landmarks such as the High Street and London Road continue to provide a tangible link between past and present. Matthew Ball's book is available from Sevenoaks Bookshop, Hollybush Café, Dovetails Vintage on Hollybush Lane and Antiquarian Antiques on St John's Hill. The Sevenoaks History Hub welcomes contributions from anyone with old photographs, postcards or memories of Sevenoaks to share. LIFE AFTER SECTION 21 The New Landscape for Landlords The Renters’ Rights Act has brought major change to the private rented sector by ending Section 21 “no-fault” eviction notices. For landlords, particularly those with smaller portfolios or former family homes, the key question is now not whether possession can be recovered, but how. Darren Forrester, Partner at Berry & Lamberts Solicitors, explains more. A New World Without Section 21 Section 21 previously provided a straightforward route to recover possession without proving tenant fault. That option has now gone. Landlords must now rely on statutory grounds under Section 8 of the Housing Act 1988, as amended by the Renters’ Rights Act 2025. The correct grounds must be identified and, if challenged, supported with evidence. This means early planning and careful tenancy management are more important than ever. What Grounds Are Available? Landlords can still recover possession where there is a legitimate reason to end the tenancy, including where they genuinely intend to sell the property. Other grounds may apply where a landlord or family member intends to move in, substantial redevelopment is needed, rent arrears have
built up, the tenancy has been breached, or there has been anti-social behaviour or illegal activity. Some grounds are mandatory, while others are discretionary, so the outcome will depend on the facts of each case. Planning Ahead Becomes More Important Without Section 21 as a fallback, landlords should think ahead if they may need to sell, redevelop or return to the property. Good records will also be essential. Correspondence, tenancy documents and evidence of the relevant grounds may all be needed if a possession claim is disputed. What Does This Mean for the Rental Market? The impact on the rental market remains to be seen. Possession claims may become more closely scrutinised and more contested, and some landlords may reconsider their position as regulation increases. For landlords who keep good records and take early advice, the new framework should remain manageable. Those unfamiliar with the revised rules may face delays, costs and uncertainty if matters are not handled correctly from the start. PMS
