Each summer, just a few miles away, the Darenth Valley transforms into one of Kent’s most beautiful seasonal spectacles. Beginning around June, the rolling fields at Castle Farm gradually turn a soft haze of violet, signalling the arrival of lavender season. For locals in Sevenoaks and the surrounding villages, it has become a cherished summer tradition – a chance to wander through fragrant rows, enjoy the countryside at its most colourful and experience a little slice of awe!
Lavender has been grown at Castle Farm for more than two decades, and today the family-run farm is home to the largest lavender fields in the UK
Nestled among the chalk hills of the Kent Downs, the farm sits above the Darenth Valley, offering panoramic views across its fields. It is a truly magical spot, with sweeping ribbons of purple stretching across the landscape, filling the air with the unmistakable scent of lavender
From a distance the lavender appears as soft stripes of colour across the hillsides; up close, the neatly planted rows invite visitors to slow down and wander through them, brushing past the flowers and breathing in their calming aroma. Each year the crop begins to bloom in mid to late June, reaching its peak through July before the harvest begins for the farm’s essential oils.
During lavender season the farm opens selected fields for visitors to enjoy in a few different ways. You can enjoy the simple pleasure of a gentle walk through the blooms, camera in hand, pausing for photographs beside the muchloved lavender bench or opt for a guided tour, where farm guides share the story behind the crop.

They offer their knowledge sharing everything from the lavender varieties grown to the fascinating process of harvesting and distilling the flowers into pure lavender oil at the farm’s on-site distillery. For a slower-paced afternoon, the popular lavender picnics offer the chance to settle among the fields and take in the scenery properly. Bring your own picnic and relax beside thousands of gently swaying plants while bees hum busily between the flowers.
It’s a summer experience that feels increasingly rare - unhurried, outdoors and quietly beautiful! Castle Farm also offer a schedule of creative workshops. Lavender wreath-making sessions allow guests to craft fragrant keepsakes using freshly cut stems from the fields themselves. It’s a hands-on session where you’ll learn how lavender has been valued for centuries not only for its beauty, but also for its calming scent and its long-standing use in aromatherapy.

No visit would be complete without a stop at their amazing farm shop. Open throughout the year, their award-winning shop becomes particularly lively during lavender season, stocked with freshly cut bunches, lavender oils, soaps, candles and an array of gifts and local produce. The farm distils its own essential oil on site, creating a range of products that capture the scent of the fields long after summer has faded! Outside their coffee cart serves barista coffee, cold drinks and ice creams -ideal for a refreshing pause after exploring the fields.
There’s something rather special about discovering such a vibrant display tucked away in the countryside. Castle Farm manages to feel both impressive and quietly local at the same time - a reminder that you don’t need to travel far from home to stumble across something truly beautiful.
If you’d like to visit the lavender fields this season, tickets can be booked and further details found on the Castle Farm website.

“Castle Farm’s lavender fields offer one of Kent’s most breathtaking summer spectacles - a sea of violet set against the rolling Darenth Valley, inviting visitors to slow down, breathe deeply and enjoy the simple beauty of nature at its most colourful.”

A flawless fine-dining experience and a restaurant that, if it isn’t already, really should be on your radar!

Bowleys at The Plough is a restaurant that, if it isn’t already, really should be on your radar. Having experienced their phenomenal tasting menu firsthand, it’s an experience that we found to be absolutely flawless and can wholeheartedly recommend.
Tucked away down Taylor’s Lane in the charming village of Trottiscliffe, Bowleys at The Plough is one of Kent’s most exciting British fine-dining destinations, offering an experience that feels another level of special. It is a genuine culinary journey, showcasing a beautifully crafted menu delivered with exceptional execution.
Run by the lovely husband-and-wife duo Alex Yates and Grace Yates, the restaurant clearly reflects their talent and passion, which comes through in how well everything is put together.
Alex, the Head Chef, trained at
Westminster Kingsway College before spending time at The Goring Hotel, where he honed his craft in a Michelin-level kitchen. That high standard shows in every plate, with beautifully executed cooking that lets each dish do the talking. Grace, meanwhile, runs the front of house with effortless warmth and precision, while also curating a wine list that perfectly pairs with the menu’s bold flavours. Every pairing feels carefully researched and thoughtfully selected, with a strong focus on independent vineyards and local producers.
Not long after the couple took on the historic pub following covid, it was rescued away from developers by local residents, determined to protect a piece of village history, and today that same sense of community still runs through everything the restaurant does.
Each course feels like a carefully crafted piece of art, turning dinner into a true experience

The Michelin Guide now recognises it as a stand-out destination, praising their local produce and exceptional menus.
Bowleys is big on sustainability and seasonality. Their commitment to local sourcing runs deeper than most and just 300 metres from the restaurant sits their Nursery - a kitchen garden, where many of the menu's vegetables, herbs and edible flowers are grown. It’s this close connection between garden and kitchen that gives Bowleys a unique identity and they have recently been recognised as one of the Top 20 Restaurants in England for sustainability in the 360 Guide, 2026.
We had the privilege of trying the Kentish Tasting Menu, an exceptional eight-course exploration of Kent’s finest ingredients. From the very first bite, it was evident this was far from an ordinary meal. Each course felt like a carefully crafted piece of art, turning dinner into a true experience rather than just dining.

The menu began with delicate snacks of smoked roe cornet, Welsh rarebit and Dorset crab — before moving into warm focaccia served with duck parfait and smoked butter. From there came cured red mullet with smoked eel and jalapeño granita, artichoke agnolotti with William pear and salsa verde, and beautifully cooked chalk trout lifted with nursery preserves. Then came the standout, their Glover beef fillet, paired with short rib, pine and oxtail Wellington. This was deliciously rich, elegant and flawlessly executed. To finish, an indulgent St Paul’s chocolate torte with pecan and malt, alonglise a ‘last bite’ of handmade sweets, chocolates and a very cute baby guinness.
Beautifully presented and often adorned with edible flowers and fresh herbs from The Nursery, each dish was stunning, while the flavours were layered, vibrant and full of surprises. Every course feels carefully thought through and every
detail considered. What makes it even more special is that many dishes are presented by different chefs from the kitchen, each explaining their work with real passion and pride. It adds another dimension to the meal and a reminder that this is a team effort, built on talent and care.
While the restaurant side delivers exceptional fine dining, the pub itself retains all the charm you’d hope for - offering a cosy, characterful and relaxed place to enjoy a drink or two. If you’re looking for a dining experience to remember, Bowleys at The Plough is a must visit destination - one that will leave a lasting impression and have you planning your next visit before the evening ends! Experience an unforgettable dining experience this summer!

Nestled in the charming village of Matfield, The Poet offers a dining experience that feels both exclusive and intimate.

From the moment you step inside, it’s evident this is a truly special spot! The setting is traditionally British and inviting and the warm welcome from the team makes the experience all the more memorable. It’s the perfect pub to savour fine dining, creative menus and countryside charm!
At the heart of the kitchen is Head Chef Lee, whose impressive career shapes every element of the menu. The result is an imaginative menu of exceptional flavour combinations, crafted with precision and creativity. Supporting him is Sous Chef Nick, a long-time collaborator and friend. With a background that includes Rocksalt and Birchwood, Nick brings his own depth of experience to the kitchen, helping to deliver consistency and finesse across every dish.

We had the pleasure of dining at The Poet and came away thoroughly impressed! The menu itself is a celebration of modern British cuisine, elevated with imaginative twists. There’s a strong emphasis on seasonality and local sourcing, with ingredients carefully selected from Kent suppliers wherever possible. Meats are sourced from local butchers, including those linked to well-known regional chefs, while fish is chosen from British waters with sustainability in mind. Even the garden plays a role, with “Kaylee’s Korner” - a charming herb patch named after Lee’s daughter which provides fresh aromatics to enhance many of the dishes on the menu.
Their front of house is led by a lovely mother-and-daughter duo, Mary Jane and Himani, whose warmth and professionalism elevated our entire experience. Both WSET Level 3 qualified, they bring a genuine passion for wine that’s reflected in a carefully curated and globally inspired wine list. Their expertise was evident throughout and their thoughtful exploration of wines from around the world ensures each pairing complements the dishes rather than overpowering them.
Our meal began with an artichoke velouté, served with Owley’s Farm mushrooms, coriander lime dressing and delicate artichoke crisps which was beautifully balanced, earthy and fresh. Another standout starter was their Norfolk pork tenderloin with maple bacon jam and BBQ-spiced crispy pig’s ears. It was absolutely delicious delivering bold flavours and playful textures. For mains, the quality of the fresh local produce truly shone and we were very impressed. The locally sourced rib-eye, aged in-house for 28 days, was rich, tender and expertly cooked, served with Café de Paris butter, portobello mushroom, caramelised shallot, chips and a delicious, deep, beef jus. The Gressingham duck breast was equally delicious, paired with piccolo parsnips, pickled pears, celeriac and a duck beer jus, balancing sweet, sharp and savoury notes with absolute perfection.

The Desserts menu is imaginative and beautifully presented, offering both indulgence and artistry. Alongside these creations, there’s also a thoughtfully curated selection of English cheeses (and tasty port pairings!) which provide a perfect end to any meal.
The Poet also host a series of themed tasting menus throughout the year, each offering six courses, with optional wine pairings. These evenings are a chance for the kitchen to truly showcase its creativity, often built around a single ingredient such as
coffee, berries, or even whisky. It’s an experience that rewards curiosity and offers something a little different for returning guests. There’s plenty more tempting events, from Nyetimber sparkling wine pairings to indulgent chocolate-themed menus, as well as occasional afternoon tea offerings inspired by Lee's career. Regular favourites include impressive steak nights on Tuesdays, set menus during the week, and their extremely popular and renowned Sunday roast. This season, The Poet Garden offers a vibrant and inviting outdoor space, perfect for

With all the chaos in the world lately, travel plans for this summer may be somewhat disrupted and unpredictable. Whether there’s enough fuel or little conflict- howeveryour travel destinations can still play a role in your summer experience.
Here’s how you can bring the world to your doorstep over the course of this season!

By Iyla Langlands
First up is a stop at Castle Farm where lavender season will be taking over the fields and transporting you to the south of France. The lavender fields offer a breath-taking and picturesque site that will make the trip one to remember. Guided tours are offered by the farm, meaning you can spend just over an hour learning about the purple wonders from experts themselves. With scenery exploding with colour, Sevenoaks will certainly be the place to be this summer.
Next up is the Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve and Harrison Visitor Centre where a combination of nature and imagination can take you all the way to the Rainforest. The 73-hectare site is home to a diverse range of plants, birds, fungi and dragonflies. Creatures of the night such as bats and glow-worms also roam the area, adding to over two thousand species that have been identified within the reserve. Five lakes, woodlands, ponds and grasslands are all waiting to be explored- providing a wild space for you to add to your activity list. Why not pack a picnic whilst your at it?
With the Volks Field festival taking place from the 11th to the 13th of July, there’s a perfect opportunity to see Germany’s classic cars on display. The event’s venue is none other than the historical Penshurst Place- guaranteeing a beautiful day. Packed with some of the coolest VWs out there as well as stalls to rummage through, live music, an inflatable tavern, lots of food and even a disco, the weekend is sizing up to be one to remember.
You can also bring the holiday vibe to your own back garden with activities ranging from meditation to gardening. Creating a Japanese Zen Garden provides an opportunity for artistic expression- you can use small stones
to design pathways and build your own landscape and then add moss or green plants to represent mountains. The activity creates a painting made from nature that can then be used to explore Japanese symbolism. Growing plants such as basil, oregano and rosemary will create an herb source straight out of Italy. To boost the appearance of the authentic Italian garden, you can decorate the beds with stone borders that reflect traditional Mediterranean design. Not only will this gardening activity offer your taste buds sensational flavours, but it will also educate you on and connect you to Italy’s agricultural traditions.
To take a trip to India, you could also try growing spices such as turmeric, coriander, fenugreek, and hot peppers. These spices will elevate every meal, introduce complex flavours and open your eyes to the backbone of Indian cuisine.
Moving into your kitchen for those rainy days English summer is bound to bring, you can experiment with preparing authentic Mexican dishes including succotash, calabacitas, or fresh corn tortillas. Recipes are at your fingertips simply waiting to be chosen, with the internet offering a variety to play around with. This cookery adventure will make for a memorable multicultural experience.
All in all, there’s a lot you can do this summer in Sevenoaks to bring the world and different cultures to you. Whether it means venturing out and exploring a new site, or staying at home and making use of your garden, there’s so many opportunities for adventure and fun. So, make sure you make the most of this season and open yourself up to the world around you.

This August Bank Holiday, Local & Live is back in Tunbridge Wells with four days of festival, filling the town with live music and an awesome atmosphere. We love how, year after year, this festival shows that live music still has the power to connect people!

“Over the years, the festival has given countless grassroots artists their biggest gig of the year and sometimes that one chance that helps launch them to bigger stages.”

Local & Live was started by Paul Dunton, a talented Tunbridge Wells local with a passion for live music and spotting new talent. This fantastic community event is held in the beautiful Calverley Grounds and is the perfect mix of music, culture and community, where music lovers of all ages come together to celebrate the creativity right on their doorstep!
It all began on the Pantiles. After hosting acoustic nights at the Grey Lady Music Lounge, Paul and his friend Ollie Nichols decided to put on a one-off day of live music on the Pantiles bandstand, celebrating the town’s historic heart. The event was such a hit that it quickly became an annual fixture and as the audience grew, a second stage launched, more fringe events popped up in local venues and the festival became a real town-wide celebration.
In 2019, Local & Live became a registered charity, cementing its mission to support and nurture local music all year round. The team now runs events across Tunbridge Wells at venues including The Assembly Hall, Trinity Theatre, The Forum and The Royal Oak. Still led by Paul, the festival is firmly about celebrating original music and giving local artists the chance to shine.
The festival takes place in Calverley Grounds and the gorgeous park setting gives people space to relax, picnic and soak up the music in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Local and Live is a great example of how music can bring a community together. It’s amazing to see a festival like this showing that live music really does unite people! Summer in Sevenoaks is full of little opportunities to pause and embrace mental refreshment!

As the sun finally makes a proper appearance, Sevenoaks becomes the perfect playground for anyone wanting a summer full of mental refreshment!

This season, more of us are seeking something beyond barbecues and beach plans - we want calm, clarity and a moment to feel properly present. Luckily, Sevenoaks is already perfectly poised for it. Mindfulness - the age-old practice of paying attention to the present moment isn’t just trendy wellness jargon. Its roots trace back thousands of years to contemplative traditions in Asia, but the benefits are thoroughly modern: studies show even brief periods of mindful breathing can reduce stress, sharpen focus and improve emotional wellbeing.
Mindfulness is good because it can help people feel less stressed and more in control of their thoughts and emotions.
Taking a just few moments to focus on the present can make it easier to stay calm, concentrate better, and deal with everyday pressure. Studies have shown that mindfulness can reduce stress, anxiety and low mood, which is why so many schools, workplaces and health professionals use it! There are few places better for a mindful stroll than the countryside around Sevenoaks, especially somewhere like Knole Park. Early
mornings here are more than just beautiful, they can feel genuinely restorative. Try walking slowly and with intention. Notice the scent of the grass, the light shifting through the leaves, and the steady rhythm of your breath.
Often, it’s the small moments that have the biggest impact. Take a seat on a quiet garden bench and spend five minutes focusing on your breathing, in for four counts, out for six and allow yourself to feel the tension gradually soften.
Summer in Sevenoaks offers plenty of these simple opportunities to pause. You might start by making small, mindful choices throughout the day: sipping water slowly and noticing the refreshment, or simply paying attention to everyday moments - a squirrel darting across the lawn, or a neighbour’s burst of laughter drifting through the air.
Noticing these things doesn’t require effort or perfection. It simply takes a willingness to slow down and pay attention to what’s around you. In doing so, you create a little space for your mind to settle and for mental clarity to emerge!
If you are a health or wellness coach who would like to be featured in the next edition, we’d love to hear from you! Get in touch by sending an email to - info@heartofsevenoaks.co.uk
1. Breathing back in time – Try the basic mindful breath: inhale for four, exhale for six. Ancient practitioners used similar techniques to centre themselves.
2. Walking meditation – Amble slowly in Knole Park, or local park, noticing each footstep. Root yourself in the present, as monks have done for centuries.
3. Mindful eating – Choose one local fruit from the farmers’ market and eat it slowly, paying attention to flavour, texture, and aroma.
4. Gratitude pause – At day’s end, note three moments that brought calm or joy -an ancient technique for mental wellbeing.
5. Silent reflection – Sit in a quiet spot, close your eyes and observe your thoughts without judgement. Even five minutes helps reset the mind.
6. Nature focus – Watch a tree, flower, or cloud intently. Ancient meditation often started with observation of the natural world.
7. Joyful release – Laugh freely. Monks emphasised lightness of spirit alongside mindfulness; laughter is still one of the quickest ways to release tension.

Mornings set the tone for the rest of the day, yet so often they pass by in a blur of alarms, emails and hurried breakfasts. Taking a little time in the morning to focus on yourself can make a big differenceparticularly for mental health. Summer offers the perfect opportunity to build small, mindful habits that leave you feeling energised, grounded and ready to face the day.
The key is keeping it simple. You don’t need a complicated routine or expensive equipment, just a few minutes each morning can help you feel more present and positive.

These moments allow you to start the day intentionally, rather than being swept along by the demands of work, family, or technology. Even small changes, like pausing to reflect, enjoying natural light, or connecting with the world around you, can improve mood and boost focus. You don’t need to be a morning person to benefit; it’s about finding a routine that works for you and adapting it to your lifestyle.
Here are four simple morning rituals that can help you start your summer days on a positive note. These are easy to incorporate and designed to support your mental wellbeing, so you can step into the day feeling positive and ready for the day ahead!
When you wake up, before even opening your eyes, take a moment to reflect on five things you’re grateful for. They can be big, such as a special person or occasion - or small, like a warm cup of tea, a tasty packed lunch, or a quiet morning. This simple act of mindfulness helps shift your mindset, promoting a sense of contentment and positivity before the day begins.
Within the first hour of waking, spend a few minutes outside or near a window to get natural sunlight on your face. Even better, a short walk around the block without sunglasses can help regulate your body clock, improve your mood and increase alertness. Morning light is a simple but effective way to signal to your body that the day has begun, and it really does make a big difference!
Standing tall with shoulders back and hands on hips, or
stretching arms wide, is known as a “power pose.” Practising this for just a couple of minutes can increase feelings of confidence and focus. By taking up space and opening your posture, you communicate a sense of control to yourself, helping you start the day with calm and clarity.
If the weather allows, try standing barefoot on grass, soil, or sand for a few minutes. Known as “grounding,” this practice helps you connect with the earth, calm your mind and feel present. It’s a simple ritual that encourages mindfulness and a sense of connection to the natural world - particularly refreshing during the summer months.
Summer mornings offer more daylight and a gentle warmth which is the perfect opportunity to create a mindful start to your day. Incorporating even one of these rituals into your morning can help you start the day with more positivity, leaving you feeling energised and ready to enjoy a bright and exciting day ahead.

Dry brushing - a ritual borrowed from Ayurvedic traditions, it’s now a staple in modern self-care routines. It's a low-cost, simple self-care routinethat actually does a few things right. It exfoliates, perks up circulation, helps prevent ingrown hairs and gives you a gentle energy boost!
Dry brushing is that slightly fussy but oddly satisfying skincare ritual where you give your skin a gentle rub with a firm, dry brush - usually before hopping in the shower. It’s been around for centuries in traditional wellness systems like Ayurveda, but lately it’s become a staple in modern self-care routines. Of course, the internet is full of bold claims about it, so it helps to know what’s actually backed by science and what’s more “wellness wishful thinking.”
First up: exfoliation. This one’s a no-brainer. Our skin naturally sheds dead cells, but sometimes they hang around, leaving things feeling a bit rough. A few swipes with a dry brush sweep away these layers, leaving skin softer and smoother. Freshly exfoliated skin tends to soak up moisturiser better, which is basically like giving your skin a double helping of love!

surface, temporarily increasing blood flow. Your skin might look a bit more radiant afterward, though don’t expect it to replace a proper cardio session. It can even help prevent those annoying ingrown hairs. By clearing dead skin cells and debris, dry brushing keeps hair follicles happier, which means fewer itchy little rebels after shaving. Another perk is that it wakes up your nervous system. The brush activates nerve endings across your skin, giving a light, energising sensation - perfect for a morning pick-me-up when coffee alone isn’t cutting it.

Now for a reality check: despite what some wellness blogs claim, dry brushing doesn’t detox your body, banish cellulite, or magically drain your lymph nodes. The liver and kidneys are still the real deal when it comes to detoxing, no matter how enthusiastic your brushing technique. It’s not a miracle cure, but done properly, it’s a great little addition to your routine that leaves your skin looking and feeling better! FILL YOUR BASKET AND SAVOUR THE SWEET TASTE OF SUMMER!
As s ummer kicks in around Sevenoaks, hedgerows, gardens and local farms brim with one of the season’s sweetest treasures - summer berries! From juicy strawberries to deep-coloured blackberries and raspberries, this is the time of year when Kent truly lives up to its reputation as the Garden of England!
B erries ripen across lanes and fields under long sunny days and warm evenings. You’ll find them tumbling along country hedges, piled high at farm shops, or ready to pick at local fruit farms. For many, berry season means family outings, sticky fingers and baskets brimming with nature’s goodies. Strawberries usually steal the spotlight first, appearing in early summer and tasting far sweeter than anything shipped from afar. Soon after come raspberries, redcurrants and blueberries, followed by glossy blackberries flourishing along quiet country lanes.

T here’s something wonderfully nostalgic about berry picking. A simple walk through the countryside becomes a small adventure – spotting ripe fruit among the leaves, tasting the occasional berry and returning home with a basket full of colour. PYO farms like Stonepitts Farm in Seal Chart, Lower Ladysden PYO and Maize Maze in Goudhurst, Milebush Farm in West Farleigh, and the family-run Meopham PYO provide seasonal fruit at its peak while offering a chance to enjoy fresh air and the Kentish countryside in full bloom.
Spot ripe fruit

Layer Greek yoghurt with strawberries, raspberries and blackberries in a glass. Add granola and a drizzle of honey between each layer, finishing with a scattering of toasted almonds. Serve immediately for a fresh, colourful breakfast. Perfect for sunny mornings or a light brunch treat!

Slice ripe strawberries and toss with baby spinach, crumbled feta, and torn mint leaves. Drizzle with olive oil and a splash of balsamic vinegar. Toss lightly to coat and serve immediately. Sweet, tangy, and refreshing, this salad makes a perfect side for grilled chicken or fish, or a light, colourful starter.
Part of the joy of summer berries is their simplicity in the kitchen. You can sprinkle them over scones, swirl them through yoghurt, or enjoy them straight from the punnet. However you gather them, summer berries bring a burst of sunshine to every dish, and once you start cooking with them, it’s easy to understand why they inspire such seasonal passion!

Place mixed berries in a saucepan with a little sugar and a squeeze of lemon. Heat gently until the berries soften and release their juices, stirring occasionally. Serve warm or cooled over pancakes, porridge, yoghurt, or ice cream. A simple, versatile way to enjoy the flavour of summer berries.

Fold fresh raspberries into a simple lemon sponge batter. Bake until golden and a skewer comes out clean. While warm, drizzle with lemon icing that soaks into the cake. Serve in slices with tea or coffee for a bright, fruity dessert that balances tangy lemon with juicy berries.

Blend strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries with a banana and milk until smooth. Add a spoonful of yoghurt, or a little honey for extra creaminess and sweetness. Pour into glasses and serve chilled for a refreshing, fruity drink perfect for breakfast, or a cooling afternoon treat.

Place mixed berries in a baking dish with a little sugar and a squeeze of lemon. Mix oats, flour, butter and brown sugar until crumbly and sprinkle over the fruit. Bake until golden and bubbling. Serve warm on its own, or with ice cream for a fruity dessert that fills the kitchen with summer aromas.

There’s something magical about lifting the lid on a jar of golden honey and watching the light dance across its amber depths.
For many of us, honey is little more than a spread for toast, or a sweetener for tea, but here in Kent - honey is something of a cultural artefact. Each spoonful is a reflection of the orchards, hedgerows and wildflower meadows that define the county’s landscape.

The practice of keeping bees in Britain dates back to the Romans, who introduced new techniques, and the Saxons, who valued honey as both food and medicine. Back then, honey was more than a sweet treat; it was a vital resource, used to brew mead, preserve food, and soothe ailments. Monasteries in medieval Kent often kept hives, producing honey not just for their kitchens but for healing balms and candles.
Of course, the craft has changed over the centuries. Skeps — those traditional straw beehives — gave way to wooden hives in the 19th century, revolutionising beekeeping by allowing honey to be harvested without destroying the colony. Today’s local beekeepers balance tradition with technology. Many still follow age-old rhythms of the seasons, yet they also use modern hive tools, mite treatments, and even smartphone apps to track hive health. Despite the advances, the heart of beekeeping remains the same: patience, observation and a deep respect for the bees!
So why should you care whether your honey comes from Kent or a supermarket shelf? For one, flavour. Mass-market honey is often pasteurised, filtered, and blended until all individuality is lost. Kent honey, on the other hand, is alive with complexity, shaped by the county’s unique landscape. It’s not just a product — it’s a connection to place, a spoonful of history and geography.
And then there’s the wider impact: supporting local beekeepers sustains rural economies, protects pollinator habitats, and keeps the ancient craft of beekeeping alive. Buying locally is an investment in biodiversity, tradition, and the taste of the Garden of England!

Tucked away in Otford, The Artisan Apiary exemplifies the balance of heritage and modernity. Founded in 2018, the family-run business is rooted in three generations of beekeeping. “We follow in the footsteps of our elders,” they say, “taking pride in simple, slow and sustainable ways of caring for our bees.”
Their ethos is clear: from nature to the hive, from the hive to the jar — nothing less, nothing more. Their bees forage across the South East London fringes and the North Downs of Kent, producing honey that is pure, single-origin and bursting with the character of the landscape. Unlike the massproduced supermarket stuff, their honey is raw, unpasteurised and untreated. It’s honey as nature intended - complex, aromatic, and alive with enzymes and pollen.
The Artisan Apiary’s offers incredible products including their natural wildflower honey, creamed honey, crunchy honey and even whole honeycomb frames for those who fancy a proper beekeeper’s indulgence. Their hand-rolled beeswax candles are a nod to the old monastic traditions of Kent!

Kentish honey tells a story of bees buzzing in apple blossom, of lavender fields humming with life, of chestnut trees dripping with nectar... and as it turns out, the beekeepers of Kent are as much storytellers as they are caretakers of the hive!

STurn your garden into a summer playground. A few well-chosen games can transform a relaxed barbecue into a lively celebration, keeping guests mingling and laughing all evening!

ummer entertaining is no longer just about firing up the grill and serving great food. Many are turning garden get-togethers into interactive events that keep guests laughing and mingling long after the plates are cleared. Adding a few simple games can transform a standard barbecue into something far more memorable.
From relaxed lawn competitions to playful food and drink challenges, outdoor games are fast becoming the secret ingredient for a lively summer gathering that friends will talk about long after the sun goes down!
Perfect for sparking conversation, laughter and enjoying a little light-hearted competition together!
Turn your barbecue into a mini “Garden Olympics” by combining several quick challenges such as ring toss, boules throws, bean-bag toss, or even balancing a burger bun on your head while walking across the lawn.

Guests earn points across different rounds and the highest scorer wins. This works especially well for larger gatherings because people can jump into whichever challenge is happening at the moment.
It adds structure to the party without feeling overly organised.

Put guests’ tastebuds to the test with a fiery blind chilli sauce challenge. Set out small samples of different chilli sauces, ranging from mild and smoky to seriously spicy and invite guests to guess the flavours or heat levels. You could include a mix of familiar favourites and more unusual varieties such as chipotle, mango chilli or garlic chilli.
Guests note their guesses before the labels are revealed at the end. It’s a fun game to play while the food is still cooking and adds a lively, flavour-packed twist to the party.
Turn up the fun with a quick music quiz that tests your guests’ knowledge of hits, classics and local bands. Ask questions between courses, or while waiting for the grill, keeping them light-hearted and varied so everyone can join in.
Reward the winning team with a small prize,or simply earning the title of “BBQ Music Masters!"
Turn your BBQ into a mini tasting event with a blindfolded wine challenge. Guests take turns sampling small pours of different wines while blindfolded and try to guess the grape variety, country or even just red versus white.
You can make it easier by offering multiplechoice options, or harder for the serious wine lovers. Award points for correct answers and crown a “BBQ sommelier” at the end. It’s a fun way to slow things down between courses and get guests chatting about flavours.

Create a dedicated lawn games corner where guests can drift in and out of friendly competition throughout the day. Include oversized versions of classic favourites such as giant jenga, connect four, boules or ring toss. These games are easy to understand and work well for mixed groups where not everyone knows each other yet. Keeping the tone light is key, the goal is laughter rather than fierce competition. Offer small prizes for winners or simply award playful bragging rights.

“Who Is It?” Guessing Game
This simple ice-breaker works brilliantly when guests don’t all know each other. Write the names of famous people, characters or even mutual friends on sticky notes and place one on each guest’s forehead without them seeing it.
Players must ask yes-or-no questions to figure out who they are. It encourages mingling as guests move around the garden asking different people for clues

The village mosaic of hand-cut Murano glass that tells a story from the birth of the planet to a summer’s day in the present
On the wall of Otford’s Church Hall lies a (not so) hidden gem, narrating the long, fragmented history of our local area. Handcrafted to celebrate the turn of the millennium, this beautiful polychromatic mosaic is an ideal attraction for a bright summer’s day. Catching the light of the early afternoon, its narrative comes alive as you walk past, with snapshots of early life, culture, war and modernity spilling out onto the pavement.
Uniquely, fossils sit beside phones, flint beside bricks, helmets beside top hatalongside pterodactyl, Spitfire, steam train and the M25. It is a mosaic of contradictions, where fragments of time overlap and compete to be seen, much like the village itself.
Approaching from Otford Pond, you walk back in time- from the present to prehistory…
"Handcrafted to celebrate the turn of the millennium, this beautiful polychromatic mosaic is an ideal attraction for a bright summer’s day."
Thomas Becket, draped in gold, purple and blue, strikes the ground with his staff, bringing sacred springs to life. His feet stand firmly on the bank of the Darent, whose waters run red with blood from early attacks on the Anglo-Saxons. Limbs spattered, warriors lunge forward, urged on by the white horse whose motto, Invicta, still represents Kent. The prehistoric textures of our local soil, ammonite and flint, share space with the handprints of our own people. They symbolise the fragments of our history which we leave behind for those who will commemorate the turn of the next millennium.

On the far right, three figures form a generational conveyor belt, passing the ripe apple of knowledge from mother to son, from son to grandson. The fruitfulness of the village tree, whose roots tangle with the stories of earlier civilisations, and whose bloom continues to sustain its inhabitants for decades to come.
Many seasons earlier, a uniform-clad soldier embraces his love. Her dress reflects the steam train passing behind them. Its thick plumes of smoke choke the blue sky and chase a Spitfire yet fail to distract a well-dressed Victorian man who is deep in conversation.
William Warham gazes sternly at the comic entertainment unfolding within his palace. He turns away from a figure intent on plucking crop-bound birds from the sky. Instead, he looks towards our present and to the conservation of his last remaining tower.

Summer in Sevenoaks is at its best when enjoyed outdoors, and few experiences rival a picnic on a warm, sunny afternoon!
From ancient deer parks to secret riverside corners, Sevenoaks offers a surprising variety of picturesque spots for spreading a blanket and indulging in some local flavours. The perfect summer picnic is all about combining local flavours, scenic spots and a little preparation to create a memorable experience with friends and family!

For a classic experience, Knole Park is the obvious starting point. This sprawling 1,000-acre estate isn’t just historic - it’s a living landscape of rolling countryside, ancient oak trees and free-roaming deer. Arrive early near the main lawn to claim a sunny patch, but for a quieter moment, wander through the woodlands to find an almost cinematic backdrop for lunch. Kids, or the young at heart will love spotting the deer grazing nearby too!
If you’re searching for a more intimate setting, Riverhill Himalayan Gardens offers a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Tucked away from the main road, these gardens are a riot of colour, featuring vibrant, fragrant roses in the Rose Walk, delicate peonies and rhododendrons, alongside hidden garden corners perfect for a relaxing picnic - you’ll feel like you’ve escaped to another world!
The gently sloping lawns also make for an ideal spot to lay
out a picnic and watch the bees and butterflies flit between flowers.
For waterside charm, Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve is perfect. Pack a blanket and settle on the edge of the lakes, where dragonflies skim across the surface. This is a quieter, more reflective picnic spot where the sounds of the town fade and nature takes centre stage!
Just a short stroll from the town centre, The Vine Gardens is a small but charming green space that feels worlds away from the bustle of Sevenoaks. Perfect for a light, urban picnic, the lawns are shaded by mature trees, while flowerbeds provide a splash of seasonal colour. Bring a blanket and your picnic basket and you’ve got a peaceful retreat right in town. Its central location also makes it easy to combine your picnic with a quick visit to nearby cafés or shops, offering the perfect blend of convenience and calm.

"Elevate your picnic experience by investing in a classic wicker basketit instantly adds a touch of charm!
Pack a set of glasses, a small cutting board, or even an afternoon tea plate to create extra-special vibes, transforming a simple lunch into a truly indulgent outdoor feast. With these little touches, your summer in Sevenoaks can be enjoyed in style!"

No Sevenoaks picnic is complete without some local food. Head to a local farmers’ market on a Saturday morning to pick up artisanal local bread, creamy cheeses from local creameries, and freshly picked strawberries from Kentish orchards. Add homemade quiches, marinated olives, or handrolled sausage rolls and you
have a pretty perfect spread. You can also jazz up your picnic drinks by bringing a thermos of iced mint tea, cordial, or some bubbles to stay refreshed under the sun!
No matter the time or the spot, Sevenoaks offers the perfect picnic to make any summer day memorable!
Freeze a bottle of water overnight and wrap it in a tea towel as it doubles as a cooler for your sandwiches.
Pick up your picnic ingredients from the Sevenoaks Farmers’ Market on Saturday morning - fresh Kent cherries, artisan bread and local cheeses make any picnic feel gourmet without the fuss.
Time your picnic for late afternoon - the golden light over the park, or lakes makes the scenery glow, and the crowds are much thinner, giving your meal an almost cinematic feel.
Bring a small jar of fresh herbs like mint or basil—place it near your blanket to add a little natural aroma to your picnic table.
Add a small pair of binoculars to your picnic bag - you’ll be surprised how much wildlife comes out when you’re quietly enjoying your lunch surrounded by nature.

Many people believe living or having children together gives unmarried couples the same rights as married couples. In England and Wales, it does not. Associate Solicitor Janet Raeburn explains.
Common law marriage:
“Common law marriage” has no legal status in England and Wales. For unmarried couples, living or having children together does not create rights to the other’s property, income or assets (apart from child maintenance). This can leave one partner financially vulnerable on separation.
Property and finances on separation
Unlike following a divorce, where the court can consider factors such as fairness, issues between unmarried couples are usually decided under complex trust law.
With property, the court looks at whose name is on the title, who contributed financially, and whether there was a shared intention about ownership. This can lead to outcomes that feel unfair - for example, where one partner (or their family) paid the deposit expecting it would remain theirs.
What if there are children?
Where children are involved, the court can make orders for their benefit. This can include requiring one parent to provide a home for, or to pay extra income to, the other parent where the child lives with them.

This support is not automatic. It must be justified and depends on what the paying parent can afford. As the support is for the child, not the adult, it is often temporary - for instance, a property may need to be sold once the child finishes education.
How can unmarried couples protect themselves?
1. Enter into a Cohabitation Agreement.
A professionally drafted agreement can record how finances will be handled both during the relationship and if you separate, reducing uncertainty and disputes.
2. Be clear about property ownership.
If you buy together, make sure the legal title matches your intentions regarding ownership. If one of you owns the home but the other contributes financially, ensure you correctly record what happens in those circumstances. In both cases, consider a Declaration of Trust to record what share of the property you are each entitled to.
3. Make a Will
Unmarried couples do not automatically inherit from each other, so a valid Will is essential.

Just a mile or so from the town centre, Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve is one of the most beautiful wild spaces in the area. Spanning 73 hectares of lakes, reedbeds, grassland and woodland, the reserve is home to more than 2,000 recorded species, and this summer, there has never been a better time to visit.
In March, the Harrison Visitor Centre reopened its doors following a £2.1 million refurbishment by Kent Wildlife Trust. The result is a beautifully upgraded space that makes exploring the reserve more enjoyable and accessible than ever, whether you're a regular visitor, or
discovering it for the first time.
Step inside and you'll find a bright and airy café serving barista-style coffee, homemade cakes and a varied selection of hot food - a welcoming spot to start or end your visit, or simply to take a break mid-walk. Large glass doors open the space out onto a sweeping viewing deck overlooking West Lake, where on a sunny summer's day you can sit, watch and listen to the wildlife around you. Ducks drift through the shallows, grey herons stand at the water's edge, and if you're lucky, a kingfisher might skim across the surface in a blur of blue.

The reserve itself is at its most spectacular in summer. Out on the water, dragonflies hover and dart, while the air rings with the song of reed warblers and buntings. Wildflowers cover the grassland, bringing colour and life to the open ground, and in the woodland, all three species of woodpecker can be found, including the rarely seen lesser-spotted. Listen out for the distinctive calls of chiffchaff and blackcap among the scrub and keep
an eye out for treecreeper and bullfinch in the trees above.
The refurbishment has also brought significant improvements for accessibility, with additional disabled parking, upgraded toilet facilities, hearing loops and improved pathways throughout the reserve. The aim is simple: to make sure this special place can be enjoyed by as many people as possible, whatever their needs.

Families are particularly well catered for. A nature-inspired play area gives younger visitors the chance to climb, balance and explore in the fresh air, while interactive digital maps help you plan your route before heading out on the trails. Audio benches dotted around the reserve offer moments of pause and discovery along the way, encouraging visitors to slow down and soak in their surroundings.
Beyond the summer season, the centre plays a central role in the life of the local community, hosting school visits, wildlife workshops and events throughout the year. It's a place where people of all ages can slow down, learn something new and feel genuinely connected to the natural world around them.

Whether you're looking for a peaceful morning walk, a family afternoon in the fresh air, wildlife watching, or simply a good coffee with a view; there's no better way to spend a summer's day than exploring this extraordinary wildlife haven on Sevenoaks' doorstep.

Sevenoaks has officially joined the padel craze, with the new courts at Hollybush Tennis Club now open and ready for players to enjoy. The fast-growing sport, which has been hugely popular across Europe for years, is quickly gaining momentum in the UK, and it’s easy to see why!
Set in the beautiful surroundings of Hollybush Park, Hollybush Tennis Club has long been a favourite spot for local tennis players, with six hard courts already in use, two of them floodlit for evening matches. Now, with the addition of Padel, there is an added another reason for people to head down to the courts this summer.
...with courts now open at Hollybush, Sevenoaks has its own place to join the padel buzz this summer!
For those who haven’t tried it yet, Padel is often described as a cross between tennis and squash. It’s played in doubles on a smaller enclosed court, with glass walls that are very much part of the game. The result is a fast-paced, sociable sport that’s surprisingly easy to pick up - even if you’ve never played a racket sport before.
And that’s exactly why it’s proving so popular. Padel is less about serious competition and more about enjoying a good rally with friends. The smaller court keeps everyone involved, the walls make for
some entertaining shots, and because it’s always played in pairs, it naturally lends itself to a social game.
At Hollybush Padel Centre, the aim is simple, to create a welcoming place where people of all ages and abilities can come together and enjoy the sport. Whether it’s a relaxed match with friends, a family game, or a bit of friendly rivalry between workmates, padel offers a brilliant way to get people moving while having fun. The project has been led by John Heuerman, owner of The Tennis Academy at Hollybush, who has been keen to bring the sport to Sevenoaks.

The courts are currently available to book daily between 7am and 6pm, operating during daylight hours while the floodlights are being connected. Booking is simple online, and there are also 8-day and 12-day booking passes available for players who want early access to court times. With the warmer months ahead, the new courts offer a perfect excuse to gather friends, enjoy a bit of healthy competition and try something a little different this summertime! For anyone looking for a new way to stay active this season, Padel at Hollybush might just be the perfect game. You’ll find Hollybush Padel at Hollybush Close, Sevenoaks, Kent, TN13 3XN.
Padel is becoming hugely popular in the UK - it is less about serious competition and more about enjoying a good rally with friends!

Padel might be new to many people in the UK, but worldwide it’s already hugely popular. Here are a few facts about the sport that’s taking off everywhere.
Padel is widely considered the fastest- growing sport in the world, with millions of players across Europe and beyond.
The sport was invented in Mexico in the late 1960s before becoming hugely popular in Spain.
The court is smaller than a tennis court and surrounded by glass walls that players can bounce the ball off during rallies.
It’s always played in doubles, making it an incredibly social sport and perfect for playing with friends.
Padel is easy to learn, which means beginners can often enjoy long rallies in their very first game.
The scoring system is the same as tennis, so many players pick it up quickly.
Padel rackets have no strings. Instead, they’re solid with small holes, giving players more control.
The sport is gentler on the body than many racket sports, thanks to the smaller court and shorter running distances.
