A NOTE FROM LEADERSHIP Although 2020 brought many challenges, our team worked diligently to expand how we delivered care and served children worldwide. My mission, as Board Chairman, has been to honor the vision of our founders and help as many children as possible have access to life-saving heart surgery. It is my privilege to share that HeartGift provided more children the opportunity for surgery in 2020 than ever before, even amid a worldwide pandemic. Through the generosity of our donors and volunteers, over 500 children have received the true gift of life. These walking miracles are now living full, healthy lives, made possible by just one surgery. Thank you for your dedication to our mission. With your continued support, we can provide access to care for many more children that need our help.

2020; a year of celebration, challenges, and immense opportunity! It is exhilarating to see all that HeartGift has accomplished in its first 20 years, and there’s no stopping us now! This year brought an acceleration of our long-term plans and creativity in finding new ways to continue to serve children in a pandemic. Although our surgical program in the United States was paused in 2020, we still completed 10 successful heart repairs in Austin, Houston, Louisiana, and San Antonio. We worked with our international partners to secure care for an additional 56 children in India, Kenya, and Tanzania. Sixty-six children in a single year! Our staff, volunteers, and Board of Directors are committed to this meaningful work and eager to serve the next 500 children. Providing Care to the World’s Most Vulnerable Children

The children we serve live in developing countries, many in desolate surroundings, lacking even the most basic necessities. Just one surgery can save their lives, but access to medical care is simply not available. Even if appropriate care was available, their families do not have the means to provide this expensive medical care. Without surgery, these children suffer a very poor quality of life; at best, dealing with chronic illness, and at worst, they may not live to see their next birthday. Born of our founders’ desire to help these children, HeartGift was founded 21 years ago to address this disparity in healthcare. In our first two decades, HeartGift has provided life-saving surgery to over 500 children from 35 countries. We’re proud of the work we do, grateful of our supporters who make our mission possible and will not stop until every child with a congenital heart defect has access to the care they need. In early 2020, the world learned of the COVID-19 pandemic that changed everything. HeartGift was fortunate to bring eight children to the United States for surgery before the pandemic changed our world. All of those surgeries were completed successfully and the children recovered and returned home.

Looking ahead, we are excited to continue what was started in 2020 and now provide services in multiple countries around the globe. Through our dedicated Board of Directors, volunteers, donors, and commitment to caring for the world’s most vulnerable children, HeartGift will continue to provide surgeries in the United States and abroad. We will not stop until every child with a congenital heart defect has access to the care they need.
In the United States, we are fortunate to partner with children’s hospitals in Austin, Houston, New Orleans, and San Antonio. Through incredible generosity, these hospitals enable HeartGift to repair the damaged hearts of these children with a significantly reduced surgical cost. Gracious host families keep these walking miracles and their guests comfortable and safe, while our dedicated donors and their charitable spirits make it financially possible for every surgery to be 100% free to the child and their family. Outside of the United States, we partner with international aid agencies to provide surgeries in other parts of the world where ethical and appropriate medical care is available. Surgeries are still completely free to the child and their family, and in many cases happen closer to the child’s home.
