When it comes to providing a top restaurant for Midlanders to stop by and eat good food that keeps them coming back for more, Pachuco’s owner Ruben Carrasco Jr.’s journey to his current spot helps provide the motivation to be among the best chefs in the area.
Pachuco’s started as a food truck in 2019 and took Midland by storm with their fusion menu of unique burgers, Korean-inspired dishes and blend of flavors. Carrasco eventually opened a brick and mortar spot in December of 2022, taking over the location of the former Johnny’s BBQ in the heart of downtown Midland.
Since then, Midlanders have stopped by to enjoy the flavorful barbecue options including brisket, pulled pork, turkey, ribs and sausage, as well as other unique options from burgers to tacos and so much more.
Pachuco’s specialties include food truck fan favorites, such as his Korean Loco Moco (Kimchi and Spam fried rice, burger patty, gravy, fried egg, scallions), Poutine (smoked meat, gravy, cheese curds and chives on fries), Pork Belly Bao (steamed bun with pork belly, chipotle hoisin, pickled veggies, sesame seeds, cilantro), Luchador burger (cream cheese, hatch, bacon, honey) and Kat’s PB&J burger (peanut butter, jalapeno jelly, cheese, bacon, diced jalapeno).
Voters in the MRT Readers’ Choice Awards contest have quickly taken notice of the business over the years including this year as the business won a Gold Award for Best Top Chef, tying for the prestigious honor in the category with Exquisite Catering, LLC.
Pachuco’s won Silver Awards for Best Barbecue Restaurant and Best Local Pitmaster, while also adding in a Bronze Award for Best Top Restaurant.
The business has also garnered other accolades, including being one of four nominees for the Texas Restaurant Association’s (TRA) Deep in the Heart award, which is an award that highlights successful and creative restaurant owners and chefs with concepts not located in the Houston, Dallas, Austin or San Antonio metros.

Hoppel, a Midland High graduate, has been recognized as one of the best 800-meter runners in the world, has thrilled his hometown and nation with awe-inspiring performances. From setting the American 800-meter record of 1:41.67 during the 2024 Paris Olympics to qualifying for multiple world championships, Hoppel’s career highlights his relentless pursuit of excellence and his ability to compete among the world’s elite.
What makes Hoppel so beloved among voters is not only his athletic prowess but also his consistent connection to his Midland roots. Our primary goal is to ensure that our patients grow up healthy by addressing both physical and mental health issues. This is why annual routine and preventive care visits are essential as your child ages. Our physicians are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of childhood illnesses, from minor health problems to serious diseases.
Pediatricians monitor growth and development, administer vaccinations, and provide guidance on nutrition, sleep, and safety to ensure that children remain healthy. They diagnose and treat a variety of illnesses, including common colds, ear infections, and chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes. Our providers also assess milestones in a child’s physical, emotional, and social development, allowing for early identification of developmental delays or conditions such as ADHD, which enables timely intervention and support.
Care provided by our team is tailored to the unique needs of teenagers, addressing issues related to puberty, mental health, and risk behaviors. They develop and oversee long-term care plans for children with chronic health conditions, coordinating with other specialists as needed to ensure comprehensive care. Additionally, our team performs physical exams for school and sports, assessing children’s health and readiness for academic and athletic activities.
MPA also offers lactation consulting to assist new mothers with breastfeeding, providing advice on techniques and solutions to everyday challenges, ensuring that their baby receives proper nutrition.
International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) are vital members of our pediatric clinical team. They are recognized as the gold standard in lactation care, possessing the highest level of specialized clinical skills in breastfeeding assessment, management, and support. They are the professionals to whom other providers refer for highlevel issues and skilled care.

Their expertise extends beyond the immediate postpartum time, supporting families through the entire infant feeding journey. By offering compassionate support and acting as a key member of the healthcare team, IBCLCs play an indispensable role in promoting the health and well-being of both mothers and infants.
Meet Our Team:
Dr. Watson
Dr. Watson was born in Texas and is a fifth generation Texan. He graduated high school in Uvalde, TX in 1968 and then attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX graduating in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science. He graduated in 1974 from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He then volunteered for the U.S. Navy and served 5 years active duty. He completed his residency in Pediatrics at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.
Dr. Sager
Dr. Sager was born and raised in Montana. He became interested in medicine when he looked to see what career he could find that he could 1) help people and 2) use his favorite area of study every dayScience. He attended high school in Anaconda, MT and then moved to Bozeman, MT for his undergraduate study at Montana State University. He attended University of New Mexico in Albuquerque for medical school. This is where he met his wife, Cherie. He then moved to Portland, ME and served his residency at Maine Medical Center. Dr. Sager and Cherie have three children, two daughters and a son.
After returning to Texas, Dr. Watson established his independent practice in Midland in 1982. He formed Midland Pediatric Associates in partnership with Dr. John Foster, Sr., when they recruited Dr. Samuel Macferran to join them in 1984. Dr. Macferran and Dr. Watson were classmates at Southwestern University (and Dr. Foster was also a Southwestern Graduate). Although the physician membership of MPA has varied over the years, Dr. Watson has remained the foundation.
Dr. Watson feels that it is a privilege to be a part of kids’ lives and to be a positive contribution. It can often be overheard, “It’s fun to watch babies grow into young adults, and to see those adults come back with their kids.” He lives by the philosophy, “Do the best you can every day.”
Dr. Watson has been Chief of Staff at Midland Memorial Hospital, and on the board of Trustees at MMH. He has also served on the Infection Control Committee, Allied Health Professional Committee, Quality Control Committee of the MMH Board of Trustees, as Chief of Pediatrics and Chair of the Department of Medicine. He is a member of the Physicians Advisory Board of Health Care Coalition of Texas. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Texas Medical Association (TMA), the Texas Pediatric Society (TPS), the Midland County Medical Society and holds an American Board of Pediatrics permanent certificate.
Dr. Sager is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), he is a Fellow of the AAP (FAAP), Texas Pediatric Society (TPS), he is past Chief of Pediatrics and Chief of Staff at St James Healthcare in Butte, MT and Lee Regional Hospital in Hobbs, NM. He is also the past Chief of Pediatrics for Midland Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Robins
Dr. Robins is a board-certified pediatrician at Midland Pediatric Associates, where he has been caring for children and families since 2018. Born and raised in Andrews, Texas, Dr. Robins graduated from high school in 2006 before continuing his education at Texas Tech University. He earned his medical degree from the Texas Tech University School of Medicine and went on to complete his pediatric residency at Texas Tech in Lubbock.
Dr. Robins is passionate about building lasting relationships with his patients and their families. He cares deeply about the people of West Texas and wants to bring them valuable pediatric care. He especially enjoys the long-term management of chronic conditions as well as the opportunity to care for healthy children and watch them grow through each stage of development.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Robins enjoys spending time with his wife and their three boys. When time allows, he also likes to golf and go to Texas Tech sporting events.
Marlena Flores
Marlena Flores MSN, APRN, CPNP-PC - Born and raised in Midland, Texas, Marlena graduated high school in 1997 before continuing her education at Midland College, where she received both her LVN (2000) and RN (2003) degrees. She spent several years working and caring for the children of Midland and the surrounding communities while working at the pediatric unit at the hospital and for Midland schools. All while working full-time and being a single mother to an amazing son, she furthered her education at UTEP where she received her BSN (2011) and MSN with a focus on Pediatric Primary care (2014).
Valeri Gatlin
Valeri Gatlin has been an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) since 2006. She has worked diligently and passionately alongside mothers and families to help them grow successful on their breastfeeding journey. She has experience with both term and medically compromised infants, having worked in the NICU and postpartum hospital settings. She continues a private practice in Midland and Lubbock. She studied with Dr. Alison Hazelbaker at the Hazelbaker Lactation Institute in Ohio, learning to perform functional screenings and provide post-surgical help for tongue and lip tie issues.
Marlena finds fulfillment in pediatrics because she enjoys building relationships with children and their families, providing education as they navigate different stages of life, and witnessing their growth and well-being. She believes that communication and education are key in caring for a child of any age and ensures that both the patient (age-appropriate) and their parents/guardians are involved in their care.
In her free time, Marlena enjoys attending concerts, traveling and cruising, puzzles, and spending time in the kitchen. Also enjoys listening to music, watching movies, and relaxing with a great cup of joe.
Tokkie Orogbemi
Valeri has an extensive teaching background. She has written curriculum and taught classes on infant care, infant feeding, and childbirth education to both teens and adults in the home and hospital settings. She regularly lectured pediatric residents at Texas Tech Medical School and provided continuing education classes to nurses working in the NICU and the Family Care Units of local hospitals. She holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Speech Communications. She is an advocate for nursing mothers with adoptive children and the Mother’s Milk Bank of North Texas.
Tokkie Orogbemi, MSN, APRN, CPNP-PC - Tokkie joined MPA in September of 2022. She was born in Germany and moved to Nigeria as a young child, where she lived for 15 years before relocating to Southern California. While in California, she received an athletic scholarship for track and field and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology. After College, she relocated to Houston, TX, where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Houston and earned her Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Texas, Arlington.
She is a National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) member. Tokkie enjoys working with children and their families and aims to develop lifelong relationships with them. Tokkie enjoys spending time with her husband and their two children. She likes to relax, watch movies, and travel in her spare time.

Seasonal health tips from the pediatric team:
Allergies - Seasonal allergies, or hay fever, are very common at this time of year.
Typical symptoms include watery, itchy, red eyes; a clear, runny nose; sneezing; and an itchy palate or throat. The most common triggers are grasses in the summer and weeds in the fall. Effective non-sedating medications are now available for children aged 2 and older without a prescription for the treatment of seasonal allergies. These include loratadine (generic Claritin), Claritin, and Zyrtec. These medications can be given as needed for allergy symptoms. If you think your child has seasonal allergies and they are not responding to medication, or if you are not sure, please make an appointment in our office. With our convenient in-house allergy testing, you will know the results within 30 minutes of what allergies your child has and begin treatment at home in 4 weeks after testing. R.L. Roberts started with one truck, a cell phone, and an occasional helper when needed. We built our business one satisfied customer at a time. The one goal was to do quality work at a fair price. If you deliver Quality and Service, that creates Value. Over the years we have gone from a rented shop with 2-3 trucks to our facility today. We have always strived to deliver quality, service and value to each and every customer and that has led to our growth.
What sets R.L. Roberts apart from other home décor and lighting design companies in the local area?
Our quality sets us apart. We strive to deliver a superior level of products and service. We are looking to start a relationship, not just do a job. We pride ourselves in creating repeat customers that appreciate how well we do the project and more importantly how we treat them.
Can you share how you approach the process of helping clients choose the perfect lighting solutions for their homes and businesses?
We start every consultation by listening to our customers to find out their vision. We are not there to “Sell” them something, we are there to create a long-term relationship. We then can help them find the best options to accomplish what they are looking at a price point that fits their needs.
What trends in lighting and home décor are you seeing right now, and how to do incorporate them into your offerings?
Exterior accent lighting has really advanced over the past several years. We proudly represent Jellyfish lighting in the Midland area. This product can really improve the homes overall look, provide a security upgrade and make it possible for holiday specific lighting as well.
How does R.L. Roberts ensure quality and customer satisfaction with the products and services you provide?
We have built our business on repeat customers. Everyone on our team knows that our #1 job is to be sure that our customers are completely satisfied. We don’t consider the job complete if they are not 100% satisfied. We want every customer to tell someone else about the R.L. Roberts team.
What advice would give customers looking to enhance their homes ambiance with effective lighting design?
I think that more homeowners should look at their exterior lighting as an opportunity to make their home more attractive and enhance their home security. We can make a home more attractive and safer with the right lighting package. We have a variety of products that can accomplish both goals.

I think that winning these awards not only speaks to our superior level of quality and service, but it also speaks to our dependability.
