Outlook: We return four players who started the second half of the season and

another two who played significant minutes at different points during the year. We had a great summer together and expect to be a more composed, confident, and competitive group. We have made some larger school schedule additions so we will be tested in a way that should prepare us for postseason play.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2025-26

Kassing and Henry Ingram, and juniors Jackson McNeff and Wyatt Kassing

Style/identity: We will continue to look to play a high-tempo game, leveraging our depth, length and athleticism. We have a number of capable scorers. We lose a couple of key defensive pieces from a year ago but have capable newcomers to step into those roles in Hohenbery and Little. We have to continue to improve our offensive execution, rebounding and overall shooting.

Outlook: We return a core group from last year’s team that reached 25 wins, including our first regional championship since 2018. With 15 players involved in our state semifinal football team, we may start the season learning on the fly. We have significantly enhanced our schedule, picking up a number of highly ranked 2A programs to go along with the very difficult WIVC schedule. We will continue to be young and growing through the season, with an aim to peak come February and March.

Schedule highlights: Rivalry games with Routt, West Central, Griggsville-Perry, Calhoun and Liberty. Added Quincy Notre Dame, West Hancock, Illini West, Riverton, Canton and Mexico, Mo. to the schedule. We will play in the Macomb Holiday Tournament and the Winchester Invitational, as well as the Gully Transport Shootout (QND), Rumble on the River (JWCC) Shootout, Great Western Shootout (Abingdon), and the Superfan

Shootout (Quincy).

Notes: Matthew Boylen is recovering from a knee injury that will limit his availability until maybe late season.

CALHOUN WARRIORS

Coach: Casey Longnecker

Last year: 22-10 (5-4 WIVC; lost in regional championship to Metro-East Lutheran)

Key losses: Conner Longnecker, Jack Graner, Drew Wallendorf, Jack Webster, Jake Snyders

Returning starters: Lane Eilerman (junior guard, 16 ppg 6 rpg), Jack Zipprich (senior guard, 8 ppg, 6 rpg)

Other key returners: Blake Nolte, Rodney Johnson, Jack Goode, Will Lorton, Easton Wallendorf, Jake Brannan, Charlie Matthews, Gage Kiel

Returning all-conference: Lane Eilerman

Rising stars: Earl Elmore, Parker Baalman

Outlook: I think we should be one of the top competitive teams in west central Illinois. The WIVC has a lot of good teams and coaches. These battles should make us stronger for the postseason run. I feel like our depth of players is our greatest strength.

CARROLLTON HAWKS

Coach: Tony Rhoades

Last year: 17-14 (6-3 WIVC)

Key losses: Carson Grafford (11 ppg)

Returning starters: Charlie Stumpf (senior guard/ forward, 13 ppg, 7 rpg, 4 apg), Buddy Holmes (junior guard, 9 ppg, 61 3-point field goals made), Carter Randolph (10 ppg)

Other key returners: Eli Rhoades, Andrew Price, Wyatt Ross, Brady Clendenen

Returning all-conference: Charlie Stumpf, First Team All-WIVC

Style/Identity: We are very athletic, tall, and fast. We are a very good shooting team. However, there will always be room to improve on defense.

Outlook: We really felt like we turned the corner last year, but at the end of the season we were hit pretty hard with sickness. We finished with a 17-14 record and are returning six of our top eight players from last year. Our expectations are high. We play in a very tough conference and in some very competitive tournaments, but we plan on being a tough team to play against.

Schedule highlights: We are playing in the Waverly Holiday Tournament and the Winchester Invitational Tournament.

GREENFIELD-NW  TIGERS

Coach: Joe Pembrook (20th year)

Last year: 24-11 overall (7-2 WIVC; Elite 8 Super-Sectional qualifier)

Key losses: Talon Al-

brecht, Garrett Costello, Wyatt Stuart, Griffin Rothe, Caleb Albracht

Key returners: Kayden Roberts, Carter Murphy, Rimbey White, Bryar Buhl

Newcomers: Dean Lancaster, Drake Smith

Schedule highlights: Schedule will be tough, as the WIVC is the toughest conference in the entire area in Class 1A. Very competitive tournaments at Waverly over the holidays and Winchester in early January.

Notes: We’ll need to be very physical defensively and be able to take care of the basketball and limit turnovers.

GRIGGSVILLE-PERRY TORNADOES

Coach:

Garrett White

Note: This is the first year of a co-op with Pleasant Hill. The official team name is Griggsville-Perry Tornadoes.

Last year: 14-19 (lost in regional semifinal to Brown County, 46-42)

Key losses: Garrett Woodward (12.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.5 apg), Logan Fencik (9.4 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.8 apg), Flint Kirk (2.6 ppg, 3.5 rpg. 1.0 apg)

Returning starters: Brody Rush (Griggsville-Perry point guard and all-conference player), Levi Barnes (Pleasant Hill leading scorer and all-conference player), Mario Rodgers (Griggsville-Perry guard, started 20 games last year), Bing Lowe (Pleasant Hill returning starter), Hunter Brown

(Griggsville-Perry forward and part-time starter last year)

Other key returners: Jax Fesler (Pleasant Hill sixth man from last year) and Cajen Austin (Griggsville-Perry reserve guard from last year who played in 30 varsity games). Also returning are Wes Bower, Brady Lowe, Kadon Brown and Maddox Winchell, who all gained varsity experience last year.

Returning all-conference: Brody Rush and Levi Barnes were both all-conference in both the WIVC and PCC.

Outlook: When you bring two schools together, you never know exactly how the team is going to mesh. We were able to get the co-op done and played together over the summer. It has been amazing to me to watch how tight-knit the team has become in such a short period of time. They are an extremely connected group who enjoys being around one another. It is great to have solid numbers in our program allowing for there to be legitimate competition for spots, plenty of numbers for a full JV schedule, and even the opportunity to schedule a third level of play. This will make every player better and allow them to be able to develop at the proper pace against the correct level of play.

JACKSONVILLE CRIMSONS

Coach: Michael Cameron

Last year: 11-19 (4-7 CS8; lost in regional semifinal to Sacred Heart-Griffin)

Key losses: Amaree Burries (19 ppg, CS8 leading scorer), Ryan McCombs (7 ppg, 5 rpg)

Returning starters: Masen Johnson, Troy DeFrates, Jeremiah Jackson

Other key returners: Latrell Hemphill, Wyatt Moore, Darren Henry

Newcomers: Greyson Prevett (6-foot-8 Westfair Christian Academy transfer), Harrison Alexander, Jack Calmese, Chris Mulamba, Jace Taylor, Trey Holmes

Style/identity: We will play an up-tempo brand of basketball that showcases our length, athleticism, and ability to finish above the rim. Base defense: Man-toman. Offense: Our goal is to play fast in transition, hunt high-value shots early, and maintain pace throughout the game. This should be a good rebounding team on both ends of the court. We need to improve our consistency in half-court execution

Outlook: Maximize our team’s potential by improving daily and competing for a conference championship.

NEW BERLIN PRETZELS

Coach: Neil Holderread

Last year: 10-18 (2-7 in conference)

Key losses: Griffin Fuchs and Wyatt Frantz. Both seniors averaged around 15 minutes per game.

Returning starters: Four returning starters, all seniors — Reid Hepperly (10 ppg), Gabe Malloy, Ayden

BOYS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2025-26

Littig, Charlie Neuman

Style/identity: Man defense and motion offense.

Outlook: We’re looking to have a strong bounce-back season after finishing 1018 last year, with a renewed focus on growth, teamwork, and competing at a high level.

Schedule highlights: New Berlin Turkey Tourney, Sangamon County Tournament, Waverly Holiday

NORTH GREENE SPARTANS

Coach:

Brett Berry

Last year: 16-18 (lost in the regional championship to Greenfield-NW)

Key losses: Brody Berry, Garret Hazelwonder, Ethan Clark, Logan Tepen

Returning starters: Luke Farris (senior forward)

Other key returners: Porter Dossett, (senior guard), Jase Goben (senior guard), Boen Berry (junior guard), Lucas Turner (senior center)

Returning all-conference: Luke Farris, All-WIVC

Style/identity: North Greene brings back a solid group of athletes, anchored by 1,000-point scorer Luke Farris. The Spartans are an athletic group, with the potential to be explosive, but their success will be determined by the consistency of their defense.

Schedule highlights: Spartan Classic, Waverly Holiday Tournament, Winchester Invitational Tournament

PITTSFIELD SAUKEES

Coach: Brad Tomhave (21st season)

Assistants: Scott Bacon, Jordan Cawthon, Wayde Smith

Last year: 8-19

Returning starters: Hayden Gratton (5-11 senior guard), Taylor Graham (6-0 senior guard), Riggston Bonds (5-11 senior guard)

Other returning players: Silas Smith (6-4 junior forward), Brody Tomhave (6-0 sophomore guard), Ryan Harris (6-1 sophomore forward), Collin Bernard (6-0 sophomore forward)

Newcomers: Rome Bacon (5-9 junior guard), Isaac McGlauchlen (6-2 junior forward)

Key losses: Conner Sweeting, Clayton Reinhardt, Carter Frazier, Grant McCartney, Trey Schlieper

Outlook: We have three returning starters who will need to continue to learn the value and intangibles of playing varsity basketball. We were able to get the underclassmen some quality minutes last year. Hopefully, the experience pays off for them this year. Our roster depth will be an issue and will have to be managed appropriately throughout the season. The returning players have been very committed to the weight room this offseason, so hopefully we see some gains that transition to the floor. I look for this year’s group to continue the

strong tradition of Saukee basketball. We will look for our guys to play with an enormous amount of energy on both ends of the floor. Hopefully, we can stay healthy throughout the season and will be playing our best basketball going into the regional tournament. We are looking forward to the upcoming season and continuing to improve.

PORTA/A-C CENTRAL BLUEJAYS

Coach: Steven Price

Last year: 24-7 overall (7-2 Sangamo, third place; lost to QND in regional semifinal)

Key losses: Guards Drew Marr (12 ppg, 3 rpg, 4 apg) and Griffin McClure (14 ppg, 2 rpg, 3 apg).

Returning starters: Jett Karrick (13 ppg, 3 rpg, 3 apg), Clayton Hoke (7 ppg, 9 rpg, 2 apg), Levi Hoagland (6 ppg, 6 rpg, 1 apg)

Other key returners: Junior Drew Carter and seniors Gavin Gronewold and Brody Pettit will emerge this year as heavy contributors.

Outlook: The Bluejays will be looking to get out in transition and hope to benefit from our defense. We are a defense-first team and believe our best offense can be our defense. Our identity is to outwork the opponent and hopefully make enough shots to win.

ROUTT ROCKETS

Coach: Will Whalen

Last year: 29-5 (WIVC

BOYS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2025-26

champion; lost in regional championship to Brown County)

Key losses: Kellen Creviston (7 ppg), Eli Olson (8 ppg)

Returning starters: Seniors Bryson Mossman (19 ppg, 5 rpg), Brady Turner (9 ppg, 8 rpg, 6 apg), Adam Abell (11 ppg, 6 rpg)

Other key returners: Owen Geirnaeirt, Samuel Long, Nolan Mossman, Braden Long, Owen Smith, Peyton Long, Evan Cors, Jacob Brown, Memphis Mangold

Returning all-conference/ all-state: Bryson Mossman, All-WIVC, All-State; Brady Turner, All-WIVC; Adam Abell, All-WIVC

Style/identity: Multiple zone defense. Played defense well last year.

Outlook: We return a senior class that has a lot of experience. We have a very deep team this year; we’ll need to see how we can utilize that to best help the team.

Schedule highlights: We play a very tough schedule — the normal strong WIVC, plus we’ve added Quincy Notre Dame, West Hancock, Mendon Unity and Sherrard. We received

an invitation from the Tournament of Champions in Washington, IL, where we’ll play Kingsville, Mo.

Approaching milestone: Bryson Mossman is just 7 points away from becoming the all-time leading scorer in Routt history. He currently sits at 1,636 career points. Current leader Bryan Groves finished his career with 1,642.

SOUTH

COUNTY VIPERS

Coach: Josh Krumwiede

Last year: 19-14 (7-2 MSM Conference; lost in regional semifinal to Calvary)

Key graduation losses: Clark Nelson (4.6 ppg, 5.9 rpg), Bishop McDannald (8.0 ppg, 2.8 rpg), Gabe Lyons (1.5 ppg, 2.1 rpg), Noah Ribble (2.6 ppg, 3.2 rpg)

Returning starters: Seniors Caden Colwell (11.6 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 2.0 apg), Owen Paluska (10.4 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 2.3 apg), Chase Dougherty (4.1 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 1.1 apg, took 25 charges)

Other key returners: Seniors Leo Bergschneider (3.3 ppg; 2.0 rpg), Evan Spencer, Collin Johnson; juniors Drew Johnson and

Eli Pence; sophomore Jace Woods

Returning all-conference: Caden Colwell and Owen Paluska, both AllMSM

Style/identity: We will be one of the smallest teams in the area, but we hope to make up for our lack of size with speed and athleticism. We will look to play with a little more pace this year on offense. We should have solid guard play and limited turnovers. We hope to shoot the ball better this season (37 percent overall from the field last year and 60 percent overall from the free throw line). We were a very solid defensive team last year (allowed an average of 42.5 points per game to our opponents on 39 percent field goal shooting), and we plan to continue that this season.

Outlook: We hope to compete for championships this season. We have 29 players on our total roster, so competition in practices and games will be top notch. We had a solid season in 2024-25, but we still have a lot to prove this season. We realize our schedule is very tough, and there are many teams in the area with high expectations. We

need to show up to play every single night to achieve our goals this season.

Schedule highlights: South County will not play in the New Berlin Turkey Tournament this season but will play in the Spartan Classic in White Hall and the Winchester Invitational Tournament.

TRIOPIA TROJANS

Coach:

Hunter Stockton

Last year: 15-16 (lost in first round of regionals)

Key losses: Caleb Carpenter (13 ppg)

Returning starters: Andrew Hobrock (senior, 4.2 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game); Grant Fricke (senior, 4.7 ppg, 2.6 rpg), Avery Neathery (sophomore, 13.8 ppg, 7 rpg)

Other key returners: Bronc Bogner, senior guard; Jack Parlier, senior forward

Style/identity: We want our players to win the physical battle on the defensive side of the ball, and control the things that they can control. The shots are not going to fall every night, but we can always

play with intensity and give it our all every time we step on the floor.

Outlook: We have high expectations this year as we have a lot of experienced players returning. We also have some younger players who bring in some great depth for our team this year. Our goal is to put Triopia basketball back on the map. Our goal is for other teams to know that when they play Triopia, they are going to have a tough game ahead of them. I am a firm believer that the scoreboard will take care of itself if we do the right things on our end.

WEST CENTRAL COUGARS

Coach: Ryan Sichting (9th season)

Last year: 27-8 (7-2 WIVC)

Losses: Carson Brown (9.0 ppg, 7.1 rpg), Cameron Sievers (9.7 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 2.5 apg), Caden Meyer (4.9 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 2.4 apg), Zac Howard (2.1 ppg, 2 rpg)

Returning varsity experience: Seniors Nick Hamilton (11 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.1 apg), Ryker Ford (9.7 ppg, 2 apg, 2.8 rpg), and Carson Clevenger; and juniors

Other varsity players: Seniors Charlie Smith and Luke Kunz; junior Landon Wahl; sophomores Eli Crain and Cooper Eddinger; and freshman Blaine Vortman

Outlook: We lost four key seniors off last year’s regional championship team. We are definitely going to miss Carson, Cameron, Caden and Zac. All of those guys played an important role on last year’s team. They rebounded, took charges, played unselfishly, and worked extremely hard on both ends of the floor. Unlike last year, I feel like our offense will be ahead of our defense. We have several guys that shoot the ball well from the perimeter and can attack off the dribble. I feel like we will be able to space the floor better than previous years. Our biggest weaknesses will be defense and rebounding. I think it will be imperative to find role players who can improve us in those areas. I look forward to coaching this group and seeing growth throughout the season.

Blayne Sidwell and Gabe Howard.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2025-26

Make it happen. -Michael

BEARDSTOWN TIGERS

Coach: Jimmy Maltby (10th year)

Last year: 15-15

Key losses: Brandy Mendoza (7.5 ppg, led team in made three-point baskets)

Returning starters: Camila Garcia (senior guard, 8.5 points per game, 3 assists per game and 3 steals per game), Kylynn Maltby (senior guard/forward, 10 ppg), Latitia Kanda (junior forward, 7.5 ppg, 10 rpg)

Other key returners: Senior guard Andrea Flynn — sixth man last year. Gave last year’s team good minutes off the bench and will have no issues stepping into starting lineup.

Outlook: This year’s Lady Tigers will have good experience with six seniors. Beardstown will be very competitive and strong offensively. We will look to speed up the game and push the ball more than in the past. With low numbers for this season, we will need to stay out of foul trouble.

BROWN COUNTY HORNETS

Coach: Dave Phelps

Last year: 24-8 (6-1 WIVC, conference champion; lost in regional championship to Carrollton)

Key losses: Ashlee Markert (9.3 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 3.8 apg, 3.0 spg, 3.1 bpg), Kyndel Painter (1.3 ppg, 1.3 rpg)

Returning starters: Kenzie Kassing (junior, 21.3 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 2.7 apg, 3.0 spg; 51 percent FG, 33 percent 3-point FG, 68 percent FT), Hope Ingram (junior, 9.8 ppg, 4.3 rgp, 3.6 apg, 2.8 spg; 46 percent FG, 29 percent 3-point FG, 69 percent FT), Maggi Henry (junior, 5.6 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.1 apg, 1.1 spg; 52 percent FG, 49 percent FT), Jamie Loehr (junior, 3.8 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1 spg; 31 percent FG, 35 percent 3-point FG)

Other key returners: Lena Anderson (junior, 4.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg; 50 percent FG, 64 percent FT). Lizzie Blakeley (junior) — She will play a big role for us this year as someone who can play both under the basket and on the perimeter. Ella Henry (junior) — She will help us on the perimeter and will bring a lot of energy to the floor.

Captains and returning all-conference/all-state honors: Kenzie Kassing and Hope Ingram are returning captains. Both were First

Team All-WIVC a year ago. Maggi Henry made Second Team All-WIVC. Kenzie Kassing was a First Team IBCA All-Stater.

Newcomers and rising stars: Madi Stroud (freshman guard), Cora Anderson (freshman guard/forward), Kallie Kassing (freshman forward), Charly Maxwell (freshman forward)

Style/identity: We will be a man-to-man pressure defensive team for the most part. We will want to push the ball and try and use our length and athleticism on both ends of the floor. Even though we don’t have any seniors, we will have a ton of experience on the floor with our junior class, with many girls either starting or playing significant minutes since their freshman seasons. We will need to improve on our ball security from a year ago, and I am confident we can do that with a year of experience under our belts.

Outlook: Even though we are still young, with no seniors, we bring a lot of experience, length and athleticism to the table. With all that, I feel we should win 20-plus games again this season, even though we have added even more 2A and 3A schools to our

schedule. We feel we can defend our conference title and compete for a regional title and beyond.

Schedule highlights: We start the year with the Lady Hornet Classic, which brings some excellent teams to the Nest, including tournament newcomer Staunton. The Lady Tiger Classic over the Christmas holiday is always a tough tournament. Camp Point is a big rivalry game for us along with conference rivals Carrollton, Calhoun and West Central.

Approaching milestones: Kenzie Kassing surpassed the 1,000-point milestone as a sophomore last year. She is 686 points away from 2,000, and 758 from the career scoring record. Hope Ingram is 435 points away from the 1,000-point mark.

CALHOUN/BRUSSELS WARRIORS

Coach: Mark Hillen

Last year: 26-8 (5-2 WIVC, third place; sectional finalist)

Key losses: Kate Zipprich (12.6, 11.4 rpg, 2.4 apg, 3.3 bpg), Audrey Gilman (9.4 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 2.6 apg), Anna Oswald (3.9 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.4 apg)

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2025-26

Returning starters: Sadie Kiel, (senior guard, 7.6 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 2.6 apg), Stella Gress (senior guard, 6.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.5 rpg), Kiera Sievers (senior forward, 2.1 ppg, 1.0 rpg)

Other key returners: Bralyn Lammy (junior guard, 3.9 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 1.3 apg), Layla Longnecker (junior guard, 1.1 ppg, 1.3 rpg), Anna Eberlin (junior forward/guard, 0.7 ppg, 0.8 rpg)

Captains and any returning all-conference honors: Our seniors will be our captains this season. They will have some big shoes to fill with what we graduated, but they are capable of leading us on the floor and in some statistical categories. Sadie is a two-time Second Team All-WIVC performer.

Newcomers and transfers: Our top six as of now are our juniors and seniors. We have four sophomores who will see the varsity floor this season, including Lizzy Hagen (forward), Mya Sievers (forward), Emma Behrens (guard), and Addi Ross (guard, transfer from Piasa).

Style/identity: We primarily play man-to-man defense; will run a readand-react man offense that

is new this season but will also lean on some of our past offenses. We are going to focus on pushing the pace hard on offense. How aggressive we will be on defense is yet to be determined.

Outlook: We are going to be replacing a lot of experience and statistics this season, but we feel we return a lot of experience compared to a lot of teams on our schedule. We expect to be in the top three of the conference and to be competing for a regional championship and beyond. How we score is going to look different as we graduated a lot of height, but we are well-equipped to push the pace and compete with some very good teams on our schedule. Our schedule will prepare us well for postseason play, as we have some big non-conference tests right away with Edwardsville, Jersey and Quincy Notre Dame to start off the season. We will learn a lot about what we need to work on and will be better prepared for our conference games and mid- to late-season tournaments.

Schedule highlights: Carrollton is always the biggest rivalry game, but we have also been very competitive with Brown County over the

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2025-26

past four years, even as they were winning the WIVC for so many years in a row with no losses. Our conference has a lot of coaches who have been around for several years now, so our conference will be highly competitive, well scouted, and we hope to be there at the end of the season in the conversation for the conference championship.

Approaching milestones: With 21 wins, our seniors will become a 100-win group for their career.

CARROLLTON HAWKS

Coach: Brian Madson

Last year: 30-8 (6-1 WIVC, tied for first place; IHSA Class 1A state runner-up)

Key losses: Lauren Flowers, the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,206 total points, including 930 points her senior season (24.5 ppg, 10.6 rpg. 3.4 spg, 2.8 apg), Harper Darr (6.8 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.4 spg), Abby Flowers (5.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.9 spg), Megan Camden (3.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg)

Returning starters: Only one returning starter in junior Hayden McMurtrie

GOOD LUCK!

(7.4 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.4 spg). Hayden was our second-leading scorer last year.

Other key returners: Sophomores Blake Driskill and Chloe McAdams were first off the bench last year. Blake averaged 6.6 ppg, 2 apg, 1.2 spg, 2.3 rpg. Chloe averaged 4.3 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 2.2 apg, and 1.4 spg. Senior Tessa Price and junior Brookelyn Eilerman return as players with varsity experience.

Captains and any all-conference honors: Junior Hayden McMurtrie was an All-WIVC selection and will take on a huge leadership role vacated by the graduated seniors. Sophomore Blake Driskill will be elevated to a captain after making huge strides as a freshman last year. Senior Tessa Price also has stepped up in leadership as the lone senior with varsity experience.

Newcomers and rising stars: We will be young overall. A big freshman class will fill roles on the varsity team. Freshman Hadley Lake will immediately step in as a varsity contributor. Hadley was a big part of the volleyball team’s success this year. At 6-feet tall, Hadley will play a big part in what

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2025-26

we do. Other freshmen, including Leah Schnettgoeke, Hannah Hoaglin, Lexi Ross and Collins Newton, will be fighting for varsity minutes.

Style/identity: Our style won’t change much from last year. We still plan to play fast and try to get after teams on defense. Our team is full of unselfish players, so we have multiple threats. We have a great combination of guard and post play. Our weakness could be the fact that we are young and will have young girls in new/different roles this year.

Season outlook: Expectations will never change for me and my teams. We will be fighting for top of the conference, gearing us up for a postseason run. These girls have seen and have experienced what it takes to get to state and are driven to get back.

Schedule highlights: The Lady Hawk Invite is always a goal to bring the championship back to Carrollton. Our conference is loaded at the top with Brown County, West Central and Calhoun, so these games will be pivotal. The Jersey game is always a special game for me personally, and the girls understand.

Approaching milestone: The Carrollton Lady Hawks basketball program current sits at 981 wins all-time. The 1,000-victory mark could be within reach this year.

GREENFIELD-NW TIGERS

Coach: Jeremy Lansaw

Last year: 10-19 (1-6 WIVC)

Key losses: Addison Wright (8.8 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 2.2 apg), Elaina Lansaw (7.1 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 21 made 3-pointers)

Returning starters: Leah Wood (senior center, 1.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg), Jill McAdams (senior guard, 1.1 ppg, 1.0 apg), Adeline Lansaw (junior forward, 9.4 ppg, 6.5 rpg), Kalynn Weller (junior guard 6.4 ppg, 3.2 apg)

Other key returners: Juniors Ella Vetter (center), Jaylynn Pitchford (forward), Catelyn Nord (guard) and Karissa Ruyle (guard), and sophomore Kinze Pitchford (forward)

Returning all-conference honors: Adeline Lansaw, All-WIVC

Newcomers: Freshmen Emma Vetter (guard), Peyton Rives (guard), Kylin Terpening (forward), and Kamdyn Dunn (forward)

A Jacksonville player takes a shot during preseason practice earlier this month. (Dennis Mathes / Journal-Courier)

Style/identity: We will use man and zone defenses. We want to have a quicker pace of play and to be more efficient on offense this year. Our team chemistry and overall competitiveness have been very good in practice so far.

Outlook: We expect to play hard and to compete every game. Our conference and area have very good girls’ basketball teams, so we know we will need to play well and be ready to compete every game.

JACKSONVILLE CRIMSONS

Coach: Dave Farris (first year)

Assistant coaches: Chris Skinner, Hayle Sommer, Ella Wilson

Last year: 2-28 (1-9 CS8)

Key losses: Zara Harper, Maressa Williams, Laila Cook, Mia Schaecher, Hayle Force, Madi Lettimore

Returners: Jocelyn Smock (senior forward), Jaycee Jackson (senior guard), Chloe Kuhn (senior guard), Camryn Chumley (junior guard), Jera Wardell (junior guard), Sydney Vedder (junior guard), Addy Johnson (sophomore guard), Autumn Gause (senior center/

forward)

Key newcomers: Chloe Harney (transfer from North Greene), Malin Camerer, Kenzie Law

Style/identity: Hopefully, they can play a little defense, but I don’t want us standing around. ... I’d like to get the ball down the floor. Breaking the press is going to be the big deal. I actually coached against them (at Auburn) the last two years and you know, us pressing them created some problems, so we’ve got to get over that hurdle first. And I think a lot of that is changes in mindset. They’ve just been so beaten down that their mindset is just, well, here we go again, or, that’s not working. And I can see it sometimes in their faces when they just shoot in practice. … I’m trying to change that. Keep it positive. Hey, you’re gonna miss shots. That’s not the point here. Point here is, how are you playing?

Schedule highlights: Jacksonville opens with Quincy before playing in the Taylorville Tournament. The Crimsons will play in the Mattoon-Charleston Tournament over Christmas break. JHS hosts Auburn on January 8.

Outlook: They gotta play hard. I don’t want them to concentrate on the scoreboard. I want — are we playing the right way? Are we doing the little things? Are we hustling? I’ve already told them, I said, I’ll wear the scorekeeper out. If you’re not going to hustle, you’re coming out. I’d like to play a number of kids just to try to keep working on teams. But they’ve got to play hard all the time. They’ve got to understand hard work eventually will get you somewhere. If you don’t want to work hard … . That’s life. That’s just the way it is. I said, you’ve got two choices: Whine and cry about it, or do something about it. That’s your two choices in life. Everybody’s had hardships, but I want them to work hard. So, we’re working on that.”

NORTH GREENE SPARTANS

Coach:

Logan Staats

Last year: 6-23 (0-7 WIVC; lost in regional semifinal to Calhoun)

Key losses: Chloe Harney

Returning starters: Senior forward Ella Osborne, junior guard Layna Bushnell, sophomore guard Sydney Schutz, sophomore guard

Mya Forrester, sophomore guard/forward Brooklyn Sharrow

Other key returners: Senior guard Larissa Heberling, senior forward Kiera Hurt, sophomore forward Eva Schenck

Captains: Team captains this season are Ella Osborne and Kiera Hurt.

Style/identity: We are a defensive-minded team that tries to pressure ball handlers and play physically inside. We like to push the pace, but will settle into half-court offenses when needed. We should be solid on the defensive side of the ball and will look to improve our scoring and turnover numbers from last season.

Outlook: Expectations are high within this group to have a successful season. We should continue to build on last season’s results and experience with nearly everyone coming back. We lost one player to transfer, and we are going to miss what she brought to the floor, but we have girls ready to step up and fill that void. People watching our games should expect a scrappy team that won’t give up no matter how a game is going.

Schedule highlights: We are playing in three tournaments this year, at Waverly, at North Mac, and hosting the Lady Spartan Classic

Note: Sophomore forward Neva Raabe is out for the season following a summer knee injury.

PITTSFIELD SAUKEES

Coach: Noah Mendenhall

Last Year: 24-5

Key returners: Shelby Patterson (senior), Torie Stambaugh (senior), Sophie Gengler (junior) and Kaitlyn Borrowman (junior)

Outlook: This is the first year of a new co-op with Pleasant Hill. Every year brings change. New faces will have opportunities to make an impact while our returning players will anchor the team with experience and poise. This group has stepped in hungry to learn, compete and continue what’s been built. Our goals are the same as always: We want to represent our school and our community with pride. We want to be disciplined, resilient and selfless. Winning takes care of itself when the right habits

are in place.

PORTA/A-C CENTRAL LADY JAYS

Coach: Derek Schnapp

Returning starters: Cousins Aubrey Vogel (senior guard, 13.8 ppg,2.5 rpg, 4.6 apg, 3.1 spg) and Allison Vogel (senior forward, 6.3 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.9 spg)

Other key returners: Bren Bailey (senior forward), Regan Heubner (sophomore guard), Mackenzie Miller (sophomore guard), Avery Sergent (sophomore forward), Rylee Boensel (sophomore guard)

Captains and any returning all-conference honors: Captain Aubrey Vogel, First Team All-Sangamo Conference; Allison Vogel, Third Team All-Sangamo Conference

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEWS 2025-26

Newcomers: Senior forward Reese Cookson returns after playing her first two years.

Rising star: Brynn Duncheon (freshman guard)

Style/identity: We will play a variety of defenses in both man and some zone sets. Will press at times. We will need to fill the void of two terrific players in Carson and Cassie, both in scoring and rebounding.

Outlook: We do not have any juniors on the team. Outside of Aubrey and Allison Vogel, we will be a pretty young team. We always strive for the top of our conference and to win regional. Should be an exciting team to watch, and I think they will improve as the season goes. There will be lots of new combinations on the floor, and looking for players to step up.

Schedule highlights: In the always tough Sangamo Conference, Pleasant Plains, Maroa-Forsyth and Athens, among the notables. We play a tough non-conference schedule and also in the North Mac Christmas Tournament.

Notes: This is the 50th season of Lady Jays high school basketball. We will be celebrating that mile-

stone with alums on Saturday, December 6, when we play North Mac. Also, Aubrey Vogel has committed to play softball at Eastern Illinois. She is an outstanding shortstop and hitter.

SOUTH COUNTY VIPERS

Schools: Waverly, Franklin, New Berlin

Coach: MacKenzie Adams

Last year: 20-11 (Lost 4340 to Illini West in regional quarterfinal

Starters returning: Back with the team this season are four out of our five starters: Savana Howell, Callie Wagner, Natalie Dennis, and Brielle Johnson.

Players to watch: Callie Wagner, Brielle Johnson, Savana Howell, Natalie Dennis, Skylar Green, Riley Holloway. Three-year starter Callie Wagner, a junior point guard, averaged 10 points, four steals and three assists per game last year.

Outlook: The South County girls’ basketball team is looking to build on last year’s success after finishing the season 20-11 and earning second place in the conference, with our only loss coming to Nokomis.

We graduated just one active player from last year’s team, so we return a solid core of experienced players who know what it takes to compete at a high level. This group has continued to put in the work during the offseason and is focused on taking another step forward. With strong leadership, team chemistry, and a lot of returning talent, we’re excited to see what this season has in store.

TRIOPIA TROJANS

Coach: Kelley Wessler

Last year: 15-13 (lost to Pleasant Hill in regionals)

Key losses: Addison Rohn (11.1 ppg, 6.7 rpg)

Returning starters: Lucie Dion (senior guard, 5 ppg, 3.2 rpg), Mylee Tracy (senior guard, 8 ppg, 4.6 rpg), Gabby Myers (senior forward, 4.8 ppg, 3 rpg), Ava Petefish (junior guard, 6.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg)

Other key returners: Addilynn Tracy (sophomore guard), Mallory Rohn (sophomore forward), Kenzie Meyer (sophomore guard)

Captains and returning all-conference honors: Lucie Dion, Mylee Tracy and

Gabby Myers are this season’s captains. Mylee Tracy was named Second Team All-WIVC last year.

Style/identity: Mix of man-to-man and zone defense. Offense approach — work to attack when the defense is out of position and pass the ball until we get the best team shot each possession. With our variety of offensive threats, we look to share the ball well and be led by a mix of individuals each night. We’re working to improve creating more points off defensive intensity.

Outlook: The Lady Trojans will look to utilize their speed and experience to compete in games this year. With four returning starters, but a small bench of substitutes, the Trojans will have to play smart and adapt to each game’s situation. The Trojans hope to create offense by playing tough defense and score by using a variety of its offensive threats each night.

Schedule highlights: Waverly Thanksgiving Tournament, Beardstown Lady Tiger Classic, North Greene Tournament.

Tough WIVC conference results in a lot of rivalries and battles.

WEST CENTRAL COUGARS

Coach: Jason Likes

Last year: 15-15 (5-2 WIVC, third place; lost 7866 to Carrollton in regional semifinal)

Key losses: Vickie McGee and Ashlyn Likes

Returning starters: Ali Little (18 ppg), Sofie Grubb (10 ppg), Adrienne Kaufmann (8 ppg)

Other key returners: Paisley Sturtevant, Laci Fearneyhough, Braylee Littig

Returning all-conference/state honors: Ali Little, Third Team All-State and All-WIVC; Sofie Grubb, All-WIVC

Newcomers: Freshmen Ellie Wahl, Jackie Lashmett, Evynn Gregory, Jada Lawson, Mia Sievers, and Mae Rueter, and sophomore Laia Muntane

Style/identity: This group loves to run and play hard defense. They can score inside and out, and in transition. They should have a very deep bench by midseason. The younger players still need to work on being better scorers, but when they do, it will make them even tougher.

Outlook: This team looks to be a threat to win the WIVC. As the season goes, the goals will continue to grow, and they could be one of the best teams in the entire area if development takes place. We have a strong group of returners with great work ethic and determination. Also, we have added eight new players who are all great additions and could help shape the team. The seniors want to end their careers with tremendous success, and they plan to do whatever it takes to get them there.

Schedule highlights: Brown County (at Bluffs on January 5), Carrollton (at Winchester on February 2), at Calhoun (February 5) Notes: Braylee Littig has rejoined the team after leaving us in December when she was diagnosed with leukemia. Although she is still on the road to recovery, her presence means so much to the team, and we are hoping to see her on the floor again soon.

Approaching milestone: Ali Little looks to break 1,000 points this season as she is just over 200 points short coming off a sophomore season where she scored almost 600 points.
