ARCHITECTURE ANTIQUE

BYGRETCHENA.PECK

Fairfield County, Connecticut is a treasure trove of antique architecture, from simple early-Colonial homes to ornate Victorian-era residences. They have broad appeal to home buyers who appreciate the character and craftsmanship of bygone eras. To live in an antique home of a particular vintage is to feel connected to the past and to serve as a steward for a piece of early American history. Take a virtual step inside these four remarkable antiques, currently for sale in Fairfield County

AMONG GARDENS IN FAIRFIELD

Situated on 2.03 acres in Fairfield, Connecticut’s Greenfield Hill community is 2683 Bronson Road, a five-bedroom colonial with an origin story that begins in 1839. Listing agent, Tara Rowe Hawley, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker’s Fairfield brokerage, describes Greenfield Hill as “one of Fairfield County’s most beloved and established neighborhoods …with an atmosphere that feels quietly prestigious and private.”

The 5,515-square-foot home has an expansive kitchen, formal entertaining spaces, a cherry-paneled library and five fireplaces.

“The core of the home reads as an early New England center-hall colonial, with the kinds of proportions and craftsmanship buyers look for in an antique: high ceilings, wide-plank floors, period detailing and multiple fireplaces anchored by substantial brick chimneys. The home has been carefully improved over time, but it retains that sense of authentic early construction in the main rooms, where the architecture and materials feel substantial and enduring.”

“[It] still feels like a true antique, but lives like a much newer home, with improved flow, more generous gathering spaces and flexible areas that can serve today’s needs for work, hobbies, guests and entertaining,” she added.

Hawley was able to provide insight into its history: “The most consistent paper trail we have points to the home being built in the mid-1840s, shortly after Joseph Porter Sturges acquired the land in February 1844. He was a carpenter by trade, and by the

1850 federal census, he is shown living in the home. His son, Reverend Thomas Benedict Sturges, served as minister of the Greenfield Hill Congregational Church and is also tied to the property’s early story through the family records.”

One of the recent improvements the owners have made to the property is a pool-house renovation.

“This is a property where the grounds live like a series of outdoor rooms, with a balance of formality and softness that feels very Greenfield Hill,” Hawley said. “There are defined garden spaces for both beau-

ty and purpose, including established perennial gardens and seasonal color, as well as a vegetable garden and a blueberry patch. The pool area is especially romantic and private, framed by stonework and lush plantings, and the garden paths and arbors create a sense of discovery as you move through the property In spring and early summer, the bloom cycles give buyers that ‘something is always happening’ feeling, from bulbs and peonies into perennials and flowering shrubs, with mature plantings providing structure throughout the season. ”

The asking price for 2683 Bronson Road is $3.649 million.

TIMELESS CHARM IN WILTON

Offered to the market for $1,999,999 is 88 Drum Hill Road in Wilton, a clapboard-sided six-bedroom colonial. The tax card for the property shows it dates back to 1800, with the house being built some 20 years later by a farmer named Eli Birchard. Judy Michaelis, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker’s

Westport’s brokerage, is the listing agent She provided a timeline for the generations of families who have resided here since. Up until the 1940s, the house and acreage served as farmland, Michaelis explained. Each generation of owner since has put their stamp on the home, while protecting its antique character.

“The original two-up, two-down structure is preserved in its entirety and is a late example of a central chimney dwelling, with one hearth for both kitchen and living room, ” the listing agent said. “These rooms now function as dining and TV rooms and include the original storage areas built into the central chimney.”

“The house has been consistently modified and expanded over the years, ” Michaelis said “The back wing—the living room and master bedroom—were added in the 1930s, along with the kitchen, with original floor boards from the attic being used for the living room. The breakfast area and great room were added in the 1960s. Internal improvements were made over the next few decades. In 2013 and 2017, the current owners embarked upon two proj-

ects with the aid of local architect Rob Saunders. The first involved the creation of the entrance porch and hallway connecting the two sides of the house. The second modernized and expanded access to the kitchen, created a laundry room on the second floor, and installed the floor-to-ceiling wine cooler in the entrance to the dining room. ”

In the past two years, the owners added a pool to the 2.01-acre property, which was designed and constructed by Glengate Company’s landscaping architects.

“The property is ideally suited to year-round entertaining,” Michaelis suggested. “The kitchen, breakfast area and great room are a contiguous space suitable for sizable gatherings, while the separate sitting, TV room and library allow for privacy and more intimate social interactions. In the summer, the pool and patio provide space for outside entertaining and relaxation.”

For buyers not yet familiar with Wilton, Michaelis describes it as a “family-friendly community.”

“Wilton’s library provides a cultural and intellectual focus enhanced by housing the Brubeck Archive

from the famous jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, who was a Wilton resident for many years, ” she said. “Wilton is a short distance from Ridgefield, with its Ridgefield Playhouse and Aldrich Museum, New Canaan’s designer shopping and restaurants, and South Norwalk, which has regular train service to New York City and New Haven.”

A FORMER INN IN SHERMAN CARRIES ON AS LUXURY HOME

Houlihan Lawrence Realtor Cory Neumann is the listing agent for an antique home at 201 Rte. 37 South in Sherman, Connecticut—a property that traces its roots back to 1861. For a period of its history, it operated as The Timber Trails Inn.

Now, as a private residence, it meets today’s quality-of-life standards, though many of the original features and finishes remain, including two wood-burning fireplaces and wide-board flooring. Under the

stewardship of the current owner, a new HVAC system, with central heating and cooling, was installed.

“It has a great entertaining layout,” Neumann said “Tons of natural light.” Plus, there’s an in-ground pool and beautiful grounds to explore in the summertime.

“Sherman is an ideal location due to its proximity to New York and its extremely low property taxes,” the listing agent said. “You also have quick access up into beautiful Litchfield County.”

Asked what he personally appreciates about this home, Neumann replied, “Really, the character of the home and the feeling of ‘if the walls can talk.’ I also love the grounds.” The asking price for the exquisite antique is $2.1 million.

VICTORIAN GRANDEUR IN WESTPORT

At 342 Greens Farms Road in Westport, Connecticut sits a four-bedroom Victorian-period home on 2.02 acres. The antique home dates back to 1861 and is currently offered to the market for $2.1 mil-

lion. Frank Zilinyi and Eva Preuss—Eva Preuss & Team at William Raveis Real Estate in Southport— are the listing agents.

The first thing one notices about the home is the inviting wraparound, covered front porch.

Among the 6,600-square-foot interiors are three wood-burning fireplaces, wide-plank oak flooring and 8-foot ceilings.

“When the current owners took possession of the

home, they added an enormous addition that more than doubled the square footage of the original,” Zilinyi explained.

“[They] have a large family and specifically built the addition to accommodate grand family gatherings,” he added. “Speaking from experience, Super Bowl Sunday in the wood-paneled bar upstairs is amazing And there is a family tradition, where at the holiday season, the owners would host a struffoli-making party. To enter into the oversized, gourmet kitchen and see a table that comfortably accommodates 30 willing helpers in the assembling of the dough, the frying, the drizzling with honey, and then the wrapping into festive holiday gift packages is a true delight to observe.”

The location of this home may be particularly appealing for buyers who plan to commute to and from New York City

“Greens Farms is a Westport gem, with well-appointed country homes and plenty of acreage, ” the listing agent described the location, which blends private and a “strong-knit feeling of community.”

SNOW DAYS IN THE COMFORT OF HOME

After several relatively mild winters in New England, 2026 is shaping to be one of the snowiest in recent years. While some may see snow days as pesky nuisances, these are the days when life’s pace slows, when schools close and businesses shutter early, when professional people get a reprieve from commutes, and parents get to spend precious time at home with their children. A snow day can be especially pleasurable when your home provides spaces for quiet contemplation, quality time with family or a great vantage point to watch the snowflakes softly fall

Hannelore Kaplan, who leads a team of Realtors at William Raveis Real Estate’s New Canaan office, is the listing agent for 111 Parish Lane, New Canaan—currently offered to the market for $4.95 million

“When the first flakes begin to blanket the lawn, most people retreat inward, pulling the blinds against the gray But at 111 Parish Lane, a snow day isn’t a reason to hide—it’s an invitation to bask,” Kaplan suggested.

“The architectural soul of this home lies in its southern orientation,” the listing agent added. “The entire rear façade is a wall of glass, transforming the residence into a giant sundial. Even in the depths of January, the low winter sun floods the interior with a brilliant, natural warmth that makes the snow-covered landscape outside look like a high-definition masterpiece.”

This majestic brick Georgian colonial has six ensuite bedrooms, eight baths, more than 7,300 square feet of interior living space, plus a five-car heated garage, pool and greenhouse.

Weather Never Dampens the Mood at These Fairfield County Luxury Homes

BYGRETCHENA.PECK

Kaplan points to three spaces in the home where it would be nice to spend a snow day: the library, the sunroom and in the attached greenhouse

“There is no greater luxury than being ‘snowed in’ here,” Kaplan said of the home’s library. “Tucked away with a leather-bound classic, you can curl up on the oversized couch. The crackle of the fireplace provides the soundtrack, while the southern exposure ensures you never lose that precious winter daylight as you read.”

“The sunroom is where the family gravitates,” the listing agent reported. “Bathed in full sun, the sunroom feels like an outdoor terrace without the bite of the wind. Whether it’s a competitive game of backgammon or simply watching the shadows

lengthen across the pristine drifts, this space captures the true ‘magic’ of the home.”

For avid gardeners who spend the season winterovering plants or tending to house plants will especially appreciate a snow day from the vantage point of the greenhouse, with the snow falling all around.

“While the world outside turns white and dormant, the greenhouse of 111 Parish remains a lush, humid emerald,” Kaplan said “Tending to orchids and ferns while watching a blizzard swirl just inches away on the other side of the glass is a surreal, meditative pleasure. …At 111 Parish Lane, a snow day isn’t just a break in the schedule, it’s a masterclass in how design can turn a cold season into a season of light.”

No matter the weather outside, there’s never a shortage of things to do to fill snow-day hours at 865 Hollow Tree Ridge Road, Darien, Connecticut

This 9.4-acre compound features a five-bedroom brick Georgian colonial home with more than 10,000 square feet of interior living space, plus a pool and pool house, a two-bedroom cottage and a field house designed by Architect Louise Brooks. The property is on the market for $15 million Ashley Mayhew Dineen of The Legacy Team at Compass Connecticut is the seller’s Realtor.

“I imagine a snow day at 865 Hollow Tree Ridge Road as the kind of day where you don’t have to choose just one way to enjoy it. I’d start slowly, tak-

ing in the quiet, then move easily from one space to the next depending on my mood,” Dineen said, imagining how she’d spend a snow day at the home she knows well. “At one point, that might mean making popcorn and settling into the media room for a movie marathon or binge-watching a favorite series. Later, I could just as easily picture myself curled up by one of the four fireplaces in the main house— book and hot chocolate in hand—enjoying the stillness that only a snow day brings.

“And when the day calls for something more energizing, I’d head to the field house, where a snow

day at home feels more like a private getaway,” she continued. “Whether it’s inviting friends over for an impromptu blizzard party, playing a game of squash, swimming in the resistance pool, or seeing how many strikes I can roll, it’s a space that makes being snowed-in feel like a luxury As evening arrives, I’d come back together with family or friends to share a meal, relight the fire, and appreciate the warmth, privacy and comfort that define this Darien retreat.”

A breathtaking modern marvel sits waterfront on 1.5 acres of Connecticut coastline at 111 Byram Shore Road, Greenwich. The architecturally intriguing home has five bedrooms, four baths, 8,223 square feet of living space, vaulted ceilings and an abundance of windows to capitalize on the views out across Long Island Sound. The property also affords the buyer a pool, boat launch, 80-foot dock and a charming, antique Queen Anne-style cottage.

“Floor-to-ceiling windows and walls of glass frame dramatic, panoramic views of Long Island Sound stunning in any season, but magical in winter when snow meets water. The double-height living room,

with a fireplace, welcomes an abundance of daylight even on the frostiest days, creating the ultimate cozy-yet-bright snow-day setting. With more than 8,223 square feet of living space, you can cook, relax, work, play or watch the snowstorm roll through without ever feeling confined,” said Joseph Barbieri, a Realtor with Sotheby’s Greenwich brokerage and the listing agent for 111 Byram Shore Road. “The property’s 185 feet of direct water frontage, private dock and sweeping shoreline give you a serene, almost cinematic setting when blanketed in snow. ” The property, which is close to the New York border

and the beautiful waterfront Byram Park, is offered to the market for $10.35 million.

Next, imagine spending a snow day in the endearing library/home office at 928 West Road, New Canaan It’s just one remarkable room in the newly constructed, seven-bedroom, 11,494-square-foot colonial, built by Woodcrest Homes. The library is designed with hardwood floors, built-ins, a wood-burning fireplace, paneled and grass cloth-covered walls, and an entire wall of windows looking out to the tree-dotted acreage. of the home, or daydream the hours away as the snow falls outside.

In addition to the main house at 928 West Road, there’s also a pool and pool house, a sports court, and a guest house. SWEET SELLING POINTS

Inside Greenwich Luxury Homes, with Kitchens Designed for the Most Discerning Bakers

Designing a kitchen is a personal endeavor. Every homeowner has preferences for how they want their kitchen to look and function. But avid bakers have a particular list of ingredients that make for a “delicious experience”—lots of counter space and room to store and use appliances and tools, like mixers, scales, baking pans and rolling pins. The lighting should be bright, and the space should be uncluttered. Surfaces should be flour- and dough-friendly, as well as easy to clean. Some bakers prefer ovens built into prograde ranges, while others may appreciate the height and accessibility of wall models. All bakers love a kitchen with double ovens.

And it’s icing on the cake if the kitchen is warm, inviting and a place where home bakers and their favorite taste-testers enjoy spending time

That perfectly describes the kitchen at 182 Taconic Road, Greenwich. This center-hall Georgian colonial is currently for sale, with an asking price of $6.45 million. William Raveis Realtor Stacy Young is the listing agent.

“There is nothing better than the smell of something baking in a home, especially this time of year When it’s cold outside, something sweet—and maybe still warm—straight out of the oven simply can’t be beat,” Young said. “At 182 Taconic, the kitchen is a baker’s dream with two islands, offering plenty of workspace for rolling dough, decorating, or prepping multiple recipes at once The open flow to the family room makes it easy to stay connected while baking, and the nearby mudroom is ideal for quick access after coming in from playing in the snow, just in time to grab whatever delicious treat has
