e are living in a time when the mental health crisis continues to press heavily on our nation and on our city. We have seen meaningful progress in some areas, and these victories matter. They remind us that change is possible when a community refuses to look away. Yet there is still so much more work to be done. We are still losing lives to suicide, and for men in particular the numbers are not improving. Across the country men consistently account for approximately three out of every four suicide deaths. The needle continues to move in the wrong direction, and despite a recent drop in overall suicides in El Paso County nearly eight in ten of those deaths continue to be men. These are fathers, sons, brothers, colleagues and friends. Assuming the system or government alone will solve this crisis is to misunderstand it entirely. These systems cannot carry the weight of a burden that is human, relational and deeply personal. That is why we are highlighting this issue through the article “Breaking the Silence.” INHERENT Self represents one of the ways our community is stepping forward rather than waiting for someone else to fix what is a profoundly human problem. Founded by Taylor Draper and supported by leaders like Jonathan Liebert, this nonprofit is creating spaces where honest conversations can happen and where the question, “How are you” is asked with intention and received with care. I am grateful to join Taylor and Jonathan on the INHERENT Self podcast, where we speak openly about the realities men face today. Through community gatherings, shared stories, accessible resources and the growing reach of the podcast, INHERENT Self is working to normalize vulnerability and create a culture where men can be seen, heard and strengthened. This is not theory. It is action. It is one more way Colorado Springs is choosing to stand with the men who deserve connection, dignity and hope. We also honor the story of Chef Ricardo Morffin, whose journey from dishwasher to executive chef and part owner of Latin Social

With no formal training, Ricardo built his craft through long days, relentless curiosity and a creative instinct woven into his DNA. isa M. Dailey is a respected Colorado Springs attorney whose career spans more than three and a half decades of dedicated legal service, community leadership and clientcentered advocacy. Lisa has built a practice that reflects both her expertise and her enduring commitment to the people she serves as evidenced by being nominated in multiple categories for the past 10 years. In 2025, in response to the ever-changing and rapidly growing needs of the community, Lisa expanded her team to provide additional estate planning and administration services. Whether for estate planning or family law, she believes the law is never one size fits all and that every client deserves an approach that honors their story, priorities and long-term wellbeing. Her office in downtown Colorado Springs has been the home of a law office since 1973 and also reflects her belief in connection, hospitality, and community engagement. She served as president of the El Paso County Bar Association and chaired its Family Law section. According to the Journal of Men’s Studies, men who engage in peer support and community programs are less likely to experience isolation, depression and suicidal ideation. “That’s why we are trying to push men towards telling somebody how they feel,” Taylor Draper said. “Talk to your friends, because you don’t want to keep all that energy inside.”

“H
ow are you?” It’s a simple question, one that we tend to lob out casually in our day-to-day language. You run into an old acquaintance on the street: “How are you?” You’re catching up with your parents on the phone: “How are you?” You’re not sure what to say to the cashier checking you out at the grocery store: “How are you”? However, when said intentionally, with a listening ear and desire for an honest answer, these three words can be life changing. To someone who is struggling, “How are you?” can be a door swung wide, a hand extended, a question that has the power to shatter the perception of being alone in the world. For local business leaders Taylor Draper, Mike Regennitter and Jonathan Liebert, it is now more important than ever to create a community where these kinds of questions can be asked and received. Through INHERENT Self, a new nonprofit based in Colorado Springs, these three men aim to tackle the rising crisis of men’s mental health by fostering an environment of connection and radical vulnerability. The statistics speak for themselves. In the U.S., suicide is the 12th leading cause of death and 80% are men. Men’s mental health is such a common issue that one in five men are expected to struggle this year alone. However, despite the frequency, the crisis of men’s mental health remains a mostly unspoken need, simmering under the surface of our relationships and society.
“It’s such a prevalent problem in the male community,” Taylor, the founder of INHERENT Self, said. “For women, it feels like vulnerability is almost expected. It’s okay for a woman to share how she feels. But for men, that’s not expected. And that tends to lead us down a whole different path.” In a culture that has taught men over the decades that vulnerability is weakness, many men today don’t know how to ask for help. This has led to an environment of silence and loneliness among male communities as well as a shortage of safe spaces to express emotions without the threat of stigma or judgment. “There is a cultural pressure for men to show up as unshakable providers,” Taylor explained, “but that expectation can isolate us from the support we need. There’s a constant fear of failure, but that doesn’t take into account the basic human experience of emotions. No one is saying to men that it’s okay to cry.” INHERENT Self, which launched in October 2025, was founded to facilitate such conversations — a lifestyle movement designed to address men’s wellness in Colorado Springs and provide a space for men to be seen, heard and known by one another. “We want to break down the barriers preventing men from thinking outside of what they’ve been conditioned to think by society or how they were raised,” Mike said. “The best way for us to do that is to display it. Nobody’s perfect, and nobody has all the answers. But we can go through it together.” WI26

Offering community, mentorship and accessible wellness resources, INHERENT Self provides a range of opportunities for involvement, including events where men can come together to share and listen to one another’s stories. The nonprofit also provides solution-based resources, such as connections to local mental health providers and a bi-weekly podcast hosted by Taylor, Mike and Jonathan, which discusses each of their lived experiences and the realities of facing men’s mental health issues in today’s world. “The long-term vision is a community ecosystem where men can find support for every stage of their journey, whether that is through a conversation, a workshop or a trusted resource,” Taylor said. “The solution we are proposing is cultural as much as it is structural: to make wellness a shared, visible and celebrated part of being a man.” Taylor, Mike and Jonathan each bring their own unique backgrounds and experiences to the table as they work collaboratively to address the men’s mental health crisis in Colorado Springs. The strategic visionary behind INHERENT Self, Taylor bridges the gap between awareness and action, creating environments through community, fashion and conversation where men can show up as their whole selves. Mike, publisher of “Colorado Springs Magazine” and author of “UNSPOKEN: The Real Issues Men Face Daily,” aims to leverage his personal and entrepreneurial experience to address men’s issues. With a background in psychology, Jonathan serves as the chair of INHERENT Self to support men’s wholeness through organizational development. “Talking about these things makes me healthier,” Jonathan explained. “This is the passion that Taylor has, that I have and Mike has. There’s an overlap. So, we knew we should team up, given our shared vision. Because we are better together.” For Taylor, Mike and Jonathan, changing the conversation around men’s mental health isn’t just a cause; it’s personal. From 14

witnessing family members and friends struggle with suicidal ideation to feeling the heaviness of depression and anxiety, each man has felt the impact of mental health and how it impacts their families, workplaces and beyond. “As someone who has experienced the quiet weight of trying to hold it all together, I’ve seen firsthand how men often struggle to find spaces where they can be vulnerable and still feel strong,” Taylor said. “I care deeply because I have lived what happens when men do not have that space, and I have also seen the incredible growth that happens when they do.” At its heart, INHERENT Self is about redefining what it means for men to be well and to be honest about what they’re feeling. By normalizing open conversations around mental health, Taylor, Mike and Jonathan hope to replace silence with solidarity and stigma with understanding. It’s a shift that begins small, in everyday interactions such as asking how a friend is and getting a vulnerable answer in return. “The human experience is to have a range of emotions, to have anxieties and depression, but also joy and confidence,” Taylor shared. “All of those emotions are created equally, and they are created to be felt. It’s okay to talk about. W
hen Chef Ricardo Morffin first stepped into a kitchen, it wasn’t to cook. It was to wash dishes. He had just arrived in the United States from Mexico City, searching for opportunity. “If you had asked me 20 years ago if I would be cooking, I’d say no,” he recalled with a laugh. That first dishwashing job would quietly spark a journey from the sink to the stove — one that would lead him to become part owner and executive chef at Latin Social, one of Colorado Springs’ newest and most ambitious dining destinations. Chef Ricardo’s story is a testament to hard work, instinct and the quiet confidence that comes from perseverance. Without any formal culinary training, or even a family background in food, he taught himself everything he knows through observation, repetition and relentless curiosity. “I never had any experience in the kitchen,” he said. “I started as a dishwasher, then moved to prep, then to baker, line cook, lead cook, and then the Chef.” That history includes two decades of kitchen experience in Colorado, where he climbed the ranks to become the executive chef for all three Ambli restaurant locations: Ambli Global in Bellevue Station, Ambli Kitchen & Bar in Colorado Springs and now Latin Social, the second location in Colorado Springs. When asked where his culinary gifts come from, he smiled and described the tattoo on his left arm, a strand of DNA entwined with kitchen utensils. “It’s just in me,” he said. “I don’t know how else to explain it.” Ricardo is quick to note that his success is not his alone. His two business partners, Pariza Mehta and Kelly Morrison, have been with him for over twelve years. “I wouldn’t do this without them,”

he emphasized. “Partnerships don’t always work out, but we make it work. We’re the perfect trifecta here.” Together, they’ve built a brand centered on authenticity, culture and connection. Being from American, Indian and Mexican backgrounds, each member of the team brings their cultural backgrounds and lived experiences to their work. “The three of us agree that food brings culture into the conversation,” he says. “And a good meal can bring more than just conversation. It’s an experience. That’s what we’re trying to create — an impact on every guest that walks through the door.” Chef Ricardo and his team created a menu that invites guests to experience the world through food, specifically through a Mediterranean lens. “We want people to know that Mediterranean cuisine is more than just pitas and gyros,” Ricardo said. “France, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Turkey … it’s a whole world of flavors. We want to encourage people to try them.” Located at 316 N. Tejon St. in downtown Colorado Springs, Latin Social brings something fresh to the city’s dining scene. In a town long dominated by more traditional fare, the restaurant introduces diners to new tastes and textures presented with a refined yet welcoming flair. The menu, designed entirely by Ricardo, reflects his experimental and evolving style. He keeps notepads everywhere that he uses to capture flashes of inspiration. “Sometimes it’s a note, sometimes a voice memo,” he explained. “I’ll try something, refine it, and if it works, we put it on the menu.” When asked what menu item guests couldn’t leave Latin Social without trying, Chef Ricardo didn’t hesitate to name the French Onion Oyster, a playful dish that captures Latin Social’s spirit of innovation. The dish features a hot, fully cooked oyster on the grill,

topped with French Onion Soup, Gruyère cheese and a tiny croissant. “It’s been accepted really well,” he said. “People love it.” Chef Ricardo’s favorite moment in the restaurant comes when the food reaches the table. “I like when we bring a dish out and guests say, ‘Wow, that looks good,’” he said. “And then they taste it and think, ‘Wow, it tastes even better.’ That’s what I want every time.” That dual “wow” factor, visual and sensory, is the standard he holds for every plate. But beyond flavor and presentation, Ricardo and his team focus on creating a complete house experience. “The experience we give to customers is top-notch — always unique and always great,” he said. “We’re not a copy of anybody. We’re authentic. From the front of the house to the back of the house, we strive for the best guest experience all the time. That’s our priority.” Ambli’s expansion into Colorado Springs represents both a business opportunity and a personal evolution for Ricardo. “I love it here,” he said. “Colorado Springs is growing fast. It’s finally becoming a big city.” Latin Social’s location in the heart of downtown gives it a frontrow seat to the city’s cultural transformation. Ricardo recently joined a group of local chefs in discussions with the city’s tourism bureau about attracting Michelin reviewers to Colorado Springs as the culinary community is gaining momentum. “When people hear ‘Latin,’ they think we’re Latin American,” he explained. “But we’re Mediterranean. We’re from the Latin side of the world. That’s what makes Latin Social special. It’s about blending cultures and bringing people together.” Despite his success, Chef Ricardo remains grounded. His schedule is a grueling six days a week, often from morning to night, balancing menu development, training and management across multiple locations. But the reward, he said, lies in the connections he makes with guests.
“You never know who’s walking through your door,” he said. “You meet people, make friends, build community. When someone chooses your restaurant out of all the options out there; it’s a good feeling.” His family, too, has embraced his unexpected career path. “They’re all very surprised,” he said, laughing. “But when they try my food, they love it.” When asked what advice he’d give to young entrepreneurs or aspiring chefs, Chef Ricardo chuckled. “Run! Don’t do it!” he joked before turning serious “Just keep focused. The most valuable thing is to trust yourself. You have to be confident and work hard. A restaurant doesn’t succeed because of a brand. It succeeds because of the people behind it.” That perspective, earned through two decades of trial, error and triumph, defines Ricardo’s approach to both cooking and life. hen Jonathan Liebert says he’s not an AI expert, he says it with a grin that suggests he’s very comfortable being called something else, a translator. He’s translating artificial intelligence, this decade’s most misunderstood powerhouse, into practical advantage for small businesses, nonprofits and civic leaders across the Pikes Peak Region. Liebert’s resume reads like a bridge between worlds. He spent 15 years in behavioral healthcare in Colorado Springs, the kind of work that trains you to listen for what people really mean. A decade ago, he crossed into commerce and became CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado. He also serves on the national BBB board and its AI Task Force. He also advises through the National Governors Association, where he was tapped to chair the first-ever AI & Quantum committee. Translation: He’s everywhere AI meets real life. Like many of us, Liebert’s first encounter with ChatGPT produced equal parts delight and suspicion. A friend showed him the app in 2024. It wrote a tidy three-minute speech on social entrepreneurship. “It wasn’t in my voice,” he recalled, “but it was surprisingly competent.” He set it aside, came back and found the software had evolved. Fast. Soon he noticed something else evolving, his own thinking. That observation became the spine of his forthcoming book, “Thought Partner,” which frames AI not as a mere tool but as a col-
laborator. The premise is disarmingly simple. The magic isn’t in the first 20% of work AI does for you, it’s in the next 80%: connecting dots, stress-testing assumption and revealing blind spots. “People worry AI will make them dumber,” he said. “It can, if you let it replace your thinking. But writing a great prompt forces you to think clearly about the outcome you want. It’s Jeopardy in reverse. What question gets the answer you need? Used well, AI sharpens critical thinking.” According to Liebert, 2024 was the year of generative AI, the era of prompts that produce text, images and video. 2025 is the year of agentic AI, systems that don’t just draft, but do. Give an agent a goal and it books the flight, drafts the proposal, populates the CRM or emails the customer. In other words, fewer copy-and-paste moments, more end-to-end outcomes. He points to emerging AI browsers such as Perplexity’s Comet, or Atlas from OpenAI as well as “agent mode” inside leading chat tools. Anything a human can do on a website an agent can do if you allow it. It’s early, permission-gated and carries obvious security sensitivities. But the vector is clear. Liebert is already piloting his own. “BEN,” short for Business Engagement Navigator, is a British-accented voice agent designed to call thousands of local businesses per month, invite them to free BBB AI classes and handle simple scheduling via text. Where does that go next? Customer service triage, simple sales funnels and calendar management. WI26

“The boring stuff,” he said, “so humans can do the human stuff.” His forecast: multi-agent systems will define 2026. Think less one clever chatbot, more a small team of bots with different roles, taking direction the way a project manager directs a crew. There are obvious risks in this wild west of technology. Liebert doesn’t sugarcoat the warnings. He worries about misuse, scams, deepfakes, state actors and coordinated misinformation. He’s frank about the need for thoughtful guardrails and for leaders who actually understand the tech they’re regulating. He also reframes the bias conversation. Yes, code can carry bias, and yes, the open internet is full of it. “The hardest bias to fix,” he said, “is ours.” We all bring implicit bias to our prompts and our reviews of the results. Without intentionally asking AI to argue the other side, cite diverse sources, challenge our frames, we build exquisite echo chambers. There’s also a broader uncomfortable truth. This industrial revolution flips the script. Historically, automation hit blue-collar jobs first. AI goes after the cognitive tier. Middle and high income degree-heavy roles are already feeling its impact. The I-25 corridor is primed, with a dense mix of tech firms and a growing quantum ecosystem. That’s exciting and urgent. “Don’t fear AI taking your job next year,” he warned. “Fear the human beside you who learns it faster, taking it tomorrow.” For all the circuitry, Liebert is ultimately a psychologist at heart. He calls AI a “cognitive mirror,” amplifying what we put in. Feed it cynicism, it gets efficient at that. Feed it service, it scales that, too. He imagines a symbiosis between human judgment (soul) and machine capability (system). The question isn’t “Will the machines replace us?” It’s “What does it mean to be human in an era of thinking machines?” One might ask why is the Better Business Bureau neck-deep in AI? Because trust is the BBB’s specialty. “People are excited,” Liebert said, “and they’re scared.” In that climate, a trusted brand can open doors, vet vendors and teach responsible use at scale. Since January, the BBB of Southern Colorado has trained roughly 3,000 people on ethical, practical AI.
