Editors Note With the arrival of warmer days and brighter skies, there’s a noticeable shift—not just in the weather, but in our spirits. Spring is the season where the world seems to wake up again. Trees stretch out new leaves, flowers push through the soil, and we, too, begin to emerge from the slower rhythm of winter. Change is often talked about as something daunting, but this season reminds us that change can be gentle, beautiful, and even welcome. The return of warmth brings with it an invitation to reset, to refresh routines, and to rethink what matters most. Whether it’s reconnecting with neighbors, spending more time outdoors, or simply allowing ourselves to breathe a little easier, these longer, lighter days offer an opportunity to realign with joy and possibility. As we step into this new chapter of the year, may we embrace both the outer warmth and the inner shift it encourages. Let’s greet change not with hesitation, but with open arms—ready to grow, ready to move forward, and ready to fully show up for whatever comes next. Nature is in full bloom, with trees lush and flowers vibrant, inviting people outdoors to enjoy longer days and milder weather. It’s a time for planting gardens, celebrating milestones like graduations and Mother’s Day, and embracing a sense of possibility and growth. In many places, May symbolizes hope, energy, and new beginnings, making it a favorite for both reflection and forward momentum. Can Spring Produce Help with Improved Mood and Focus

A

By Stephen Shaul pril hath put a spirit of youth in everything.” – William Shakespeare There’s a reason we talk about having a “spring in my step.” Spring is not only a mechanism of propulsion but also the season when the warmer weather fills us with new-found energy. Is there more to this? Does the seasonal food available in spring contribute to our feelings of well-being and ability to focus? Can including more of these foods in our diet magnify these feelings and abilities, transforming our mind to match the season and all it means for our environment? Let’s first look at the association between spring weather and serotonin levels. We will take the next step to show how serotonin levels affect mood. And finally, we will explore the links between Spring, serotonin and the foods that Spring adds to our dietary options. Spring weather, increased sunshine and warmth have long been anecdotally associated with improved mood. There is science to reinforce this. Serotonin levels have long been proven to affect human mood. A 1997 all male, controlled observational study done at the Institute of Psychiatry in London confirmed the fact low serotonin levels are a significant factor in depression and noted correlation between higher levels of serotonin among all study participants in spring as opposed to fall. Subsequently, a 2002 study of males that was published in The Lancet found that sunlight is a major contributor to serotonin levels A larger, all gender 2011 epidemiological analysis showed a higher correlation of serotonin uptake in the spring quarter versus the fall quarter, with correlation far greater in men than women. What are the human consequences when this Spring serotonin hits? Tryptophan, mood, sleep, and food A 2016, Jenkins et al Literature review (Nutrients) reports that the link between serotonin and mood is not well understood but points out that the association between a lack of serotonin and depression is well researched and established. In fact, however, it is not serotonin itself that’s found in food, it’s tryptophan, an essential amino acid that is the precursor of serotonin. Therefore, the study points out, foods that are high in Tryptophan (egg whites, meats, poultry, legumes, dairy, nuts, and seeds) can play a role in mood regulation and also helps to improve REM sleep, which leads to increased alertness as well as better reasoning and memory functions. Because tryptophan is metabolized to create serotonin, the gut microbiome is the largest source of serotonin in the human body. The “axis bold as love”: Tryptophan, serotonin and the Brain-Gut Axis The same 2016 study shows that serotonin is a key element in brain gut axis., a bi-directional communication system between This axis is the key bi-directional system between the two dominant human nerve centres. A 2014 study by EA Mayer et al published in The Journal of Neuroscience found that alterations in the gut microbiome may play a role in human brain diseases, including autism, PRODUCE>>page 9

Tips on Setting Fitness Goals

S

etting fitness goals can be an exciting way to stay motivated and committed to a healthier lifestyle. The key to success is setting fitness goals that are both attainable and inspiring to avoid frustration, burnout, or even injury. Whether you’re just starting or looking to refine your current routine, these tips will help you create a plan that works for you. Be sure to consult with your doctor before beginning any new routines. Start Small and Build Up Rather than diving into an intense workout regimen right away, begin with manageable steps. For example, instead of aiming for an hour-long workout every day, start with 15-30 minutes of movement, four to five days a week. This consistency will help you develop a routine while allowing room for gradual progress. You can slowly increase the amount of time you spend as you get into a rhythm and feel yourself getting stronger. Try a Group Exercise Class Once a Week Adding a group exercise class to your schedule can boost motivation and accountability. Whether it’s yoga, spin, or strength training, being part of a class offers social support and structured guidance. If you’re unsure where to start, check out classes at your local gym, community center, or even virtual options.

You can modify activities to fit your fitness level. Incorporate Variety by Trying a New Activity Monthly Keeping workouts fresh prevents boredom and keeps you engaged. Make it a goal to try a new activity once a month. This could be pickleball, swimming, Pilates, or even hiking. Rotating activities keep things interesting, challenges different muscle groups, and improves overall fitness. Make Walking a Key Part of Your Routine Walking is one of the easiest and most accessible forms of exercise. Whether you aim for a daily 20-minute walk or set a step goal, walking offers great cardiovascular benefits without the need for special equipment. You can also challenge yourself by increasing your pace, taking scenic routes, or walking with a friend for added motivation. Setting realistic goals around walking may look like slowly increasing your pace or endurance, adding hills or elevation changes, or carrying small weights for added muscle tone. Set a Strength or Flexibility Goal Strength and flexibility are just as important as cardio for overall health. If you’re new to strength training, start with bodyweight exercises or light weights two times per week. For flexibility, incorporating yoga or stretching after workouts can improve mobility and reduce injury risk. Setting goals to do these activities regularly can help you feel more relaxed and can help with other workouts, too. Track Progress and Celebrate Milestones Monitoring your progress can keep you motivated. Use a fitness journal, app, or smartwatch to log workouts and achievements. Celebrating small milestones—like increasing endurance, lifting heavier weights, or attending regular classes—can keep you inspired to continue your fitness journey. Consider adding rewards if you’re incentivized by them; perhaps you have had an eye on a new book, a fun exercise headband, or even placing a sticker in your journal is a great way to mark milestone achievements. Listen to Your Body and Adjust When Needed While consistency is important, listening to your body is equally crucial. Some days, you might need to scale back intensity or opt for gentler movement like yoga or stretching. Adjusting your routine when necessary helps prevent burnout and injuries. By setting realistic and adaptable fitness goals, you’ll create a sustainable workout routine that supports your long-term health and well-being. Whether it’s walking more, joining a fitness class, or simply finding new ways to move, the key is to start small and build momentum over time. JUMPSTARTMD SHARES WHY STRIVING FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH SHOULD BE THE GOAL

sticj.adobe.com/ Drobot Dean istock.com/ilona titova

7 Reasons Why Optimal Health Matters More than “Normal” Health

M

ost people want to be healthy, but one of the issues they face is what it means to reach that status. If they follow the typical advice, they will strive for what is considered “normal” health. Instead, they must strive for “optimal health” to get the most out of their lives. It’s optimal health that will help people in all facets of their lives and help them reach new levels. “Our current healthcare system in this country is not working well,” said Parham Javaherian, chief executive officer of JumpstartMD. “There are issues that it doesn’t address, leaving people feeling unsatisfied and not reaching their goals. We can and should do better.” According to a report issued by the American Medical Association, achieving health equity is not a utopian dream. On the contrary, we have the technical capacity and material resources to make health equity a reality—to assure that all communities have the conditions, resources, opportunities and power to attain optimal health, and to know that health is a human right. Javaherian is on a mission to elevate how we handle healthcare, switching from a mission of people focusing on achieving normal health to one striving for optimal health. Optimal health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. It is a delicate balance of dimensions that enhance one’s overall health and well-being. The good news is that this can benefit both the patients and healthcare businesses. Today’s healthcare focuses on encouraging people to strive for normal health. In many cases that is a noble mission, butthose parameters are insufficient, often neglecting subtle but criticalsymptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, low libido, and many other symptoms that remove one from an optimal life. Optimal health aims to address these overlooked symptoms to enhance daily life significantly. For example, a seemingly healthy individual experiencing chronic fatigue can be considered healthy but can also greatly benefit from personalized lifestyle interventions, nutritional adjustments, and hormone therapies, thus considerably improving their productivity and well-being. Here are 7 reasons why optimal health matters more than expected health outcomes: •Changes in the healthcare landscape. Traditional healthcare is increasingly inadequate, evidenced by rising chronic disease rates, patient dissatisfaction, and fragmented, reactive solutions. While innovations like AI and wearable tech promise improved care, the lack of personalized, proactive attention remains glaringly unresolved. Truly adequate healthcare must anticipate patient needs, focus on preventative care, and deliver personalized guidance to reach optimized health. •No longer about being reactive. Reactive healthcare models inherently respond only after problems have surfaced, frequently resulting in delayed diagnoses, worsening health conditions, and higher costs. By the time patients expe MHL May 2025

rience noticeable symptoms, the opportunity for preventive care has already been missed, often requiring more extensive and expensive treatments. For instance, conditions like type 2 diabetes are typically addressed only when symptoms become severe, despite clear opportunities for early intervention through lifestyle modification and preventive measures. This reactive model also leads to rushed, impersonal interactions, leaving patients feeling disconnected and inadequately supported. •Addresses women’s health gaps. Women’s health, particularly around perimenopause and menopause, has been historically neglected, with symptoms commonly dismissed as being normal. However, targeted hormone treatments, precision diagnostics, and tailored lifestyle interventions significantly enhance women’s quality of life. Companies addressing this underserved market, as demonstrated by the increasing popularity of specialized women’s health clinics, can achieve robust business growth while dramatically improving patient outcomes and optima health. •Tackles the obesity epidemic. With over half of U.S. adults suffering from obesity and related chronic illnesses, GLP-1 medications like Semaglutide or Tirzepatide offer groundbreaking treatments. However, medications alone can prove insufficient without medical oversight and integrated lifestyle management. Businesses that combine medication, nutritional coaching, and physical activity, such as structured wellness programs, have consistently shown superior long-term results. Moreover, ensuring these solutions become widely covered by insurance is a logical next step to achieving a broader public health impact. •Improves patient satisfaction. Patient satisfaction and measurable health outcomes should be central metrics guiding healthcare businesses. This is good for the business and the people it serves. •Promotes responsible medication management. Proper medication management requires personalized prescriptions, thorough assessments, diligent monitoring, and lifestyle integration. Avoiding pill mills (i.e., clinics that indiscriminately prescribe medications) is crucial for patient trust, health, outcomes, and long-term business sustainability. •Enhances human connection with technology. Technology in healthcare is best leveraged to enhance, and not replace, human interaction. Intuitive, patientcentered digital solutions should streamline communication and provide valuable insights without adding complexity or diminishing personal care. “Accepting merely normal health parameters falls short of what patients deserve. Optimal healthcare enhances patient lives and experiences and establishes sustainable, profitable business models,” said Javaherian. “Prioritizing optimal health sets a new standard, reinforcing the belief that every patient deserves the best possible care, the best possible outcomes, and the best and most optimal life”. anxiety, depression, and even chronic pain. How do spring foods aid the gut microbiome, and serotonin levels? According to multiple studies, including a 2019 study by RD Hills et al that was published in Nutrients, have shown that diet plays an important role in determining the composition of our gut microbiome and links dietary choices to obesity, bowel, heart, and mental health disorders. And, in the same year, a study by William Zhao et al found a link between a healthy gut microbiome and improved food allergy responses. So, are spring foods unique in their ability to generate a healthy microbiome? Luckily for us, the answer is no, they’re not! In fact, a 2019 literature review by Holly Willis et al, found that “There was limited effect on microbial diversity across studies and modest microbial changes were noted in 10 of 15 studies. More research is needed before specific plant foods can be recommended to improve gut microbiota and ultimately health. And Ping Zhang’s 2022 comprehensive review suggests that fibre rich foods play a role in the maintenance of a gut microbiome that helps to balance the negative side effects of antibiotics, which are most often prescribed in winter (Suda, 2014). Finally, a 2020 study by Leah Stiemsma et al showed that early research indicates a positive link between fermented foods, which are available year-round, and gut health. Conclusion Based on the scientific evidence, a high fibre diet, teamed with gut microbiome feeding pulses and fermented foods will keep your “second brain,” which is the main serotonin producer, in great shape year-round. As Spring hits, you will also feel a boost as the sunny days grow longer. Together, diet and sunshine combine to put that spring in our step, reduce food allergies, and combat conditions as wide ranging as cardiovascular illness, bowel disease, and mental health.

What Every Woman Needs for Wellness in Her 20s, 30s, 40s, and Beyond

By Rocio Medina Badiano, M.D. – Cochairperson and Member, Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board orld Women’s Wellness Day is a powerful reminder that taking care of your health isn’t something you do just once a year—it’s an ongoing commitment. In our busy lives, it’s easy to put others first, but true wellness starts with making time for yourself every day. At Herbalife, we believe wellness is a lifelong journey, and the right nutrition, support, and mindset can help you feel your best—physically and mentally—at any age. As women, our health needs evolve with every stage of life. From hormonal changes and shifting energy levels to the impact of aging, our bodies change in unique ways. A one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work. That’s why personalized care, nutrition, and self-awareness are key to staying strong, balanced, and

W

healthy at every stage of life. Whether you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s, or beyond, it’s never too late to prioritize your health. Here’s how to support your body through every decade. In Your 20s: Build a Strong Foundation Your 20s are the perfect time to create healthy habits that will support your long-term wellness. Hydrate, Move, and Sleep Well Start by aiming for at least two liters of water each day, 150 minutes of exercise per week, and 7–9 hours of sleep each night. Small changes—like taking the stairs or adding yoga to your routine—can build habits that deliver lasting benefits for your body and mind. Fuel Your Body with Nutrient-Dense Foods The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that adults in their 20s and 30s get 15% of their calories from fast food. It’s time to break the cycle. Choose lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Healthy snacks like Greek yogurt, hummus with veggies, or a protein bar can help keep your energy levels steady throughout the day. Strengthen Your Bones Bone mass builds through your 20s, with peak density around age 30. Ensure you’re getting 1,000 mg of calcium daily from sources like dairy, tofu, or leafy greens. Potassium-rich foods like melons, bananas, and beans also help support muscle and heart health. Spending at least 15 minutes outdoors daily helps your body produce vitamin D, essential for strong bones and a healthy immune system. In Your 30s: Strengthen and Maintain Your Health As you enter your 30s, your metabolism naturally begins to slow down, and it becomes even more important to stay mindful of nutrition and physical activity. Make Smart Food Swaps Cut back on refined carbs like pastries and white bread to avoid energy crashes. Opt for whole grains, fiber-rich vegetables, and hydrate with water or herbal teas instead of sugary drinks. Support Your Muscle and Energy Needs Aim for at least 75–100 grams of protein per day through lean meats, dairy products, eggs, or protein supplements. For energy and recovery, eat plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables and keep hydration high. Watch Your Iron Intake Many women in their 30s don’t get enough iron. Include iron-rich foods like lentils, fortified cereals, and lean meats to help prevent deficiency and combat fatigue.

In Your 40s: Protect Your Heart and Balance Hormones In your 40s, hormonal shifts can begin to impact your weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. It’s crucial to prioritize heart health and maintain hormonal balance. Prioritize Heart Health Exercise regularly and fuel your body with heart-healthy foods like dark leafy greens, tomatoes, and berries. Cut back on saturated fats and keep alcohol intake in check. Look for sources of omega-3 fatty acids—such as wild fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines, or plant-based options like flaxseeds and chia seeds—to reduce inflammation and support cardiovascular function. Boost Your Vitamin D Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and supports immune health. As your body’s natural production of vitamin D decreases in your 40s, incorporate fortified foods, egg yolks, and fatty fish into your diet. Add Antioxidants Antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E are crucial in the fight against aging. Load up on colorful fruits, vegetables, and nuts to support longevity and glowing skin. In Your 50s: Support Heart Health and Hormonal Balance Post-menopausal women experience a range of changes, and it’s more important than ever to focus on heart health, bone density, and hormonal balance. Eat More Fiber Fiber-rich foods like oats, apples, and beans help lower cholesterol, improve digestion, and keep you feeling fuller longer, which can be crucial for weight management. Focus on Key Nutrients Vitamin B12 is essential for red blood cell and nerve function, but absorption may decline with age. Consider fortified foods or supplements to keep your levels in check. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish, continue to support heart and hormonal health as you age. Stay Consistently Active Exercise remains essential in your 50s and beyond. Incorporate both aerobic exercises and strength training to support heart health, preserve muscle mass, and maintain mobility. In Your 60s and Beyond: Nourish, Move, and Connect Later life brings the opportunity to prioritize your health even more, with a focus on maintaining physical and mental vitality. Focus on Nutrient-Dense Meals As metabolism slows and appetite changes, it’s important to consume nutrient-dense meals. Share meals with loved ones, explore new recipes, and consider meal replacement shakes to ensure you’re getting the nutrients you need. Support Digestive Health As your gut health changes, support digestion by adding fiber and probiotics to your diet through foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, or supplements. Stay Social and Active An active lifestyle doesn’t require hours at the gym. Group fitness classes, recreational sports, or even regular walks with friends can keep you moving and socially connected. Aim for at least three days of resistance training per week to support muscle strength and ensure you’re getting 25 grams of protein postworkout to aid recovery. This World Women’s Wellness Day, take a moment to reflect on what well-being means to you. Whether it’s a walk, a nutritious meal, or a few extra hours of rest, today is the perfect day to start your wellness journey. At Herbalife, we are proud to support women with science-backed nutrition, expert education, and the encouragement to thrive at every stage of life. AGE WELL Vision

FLOATERS ARE MOST VISIBLE WHEN LOOKING AT A PLAIN BACKGROUND

istock.com/NeonShot

Eye MDs offer insights into “floaters”

F

By Cheryl L. Dejewski loaters are often described by people as “specks,” “threads,” “bugs” or “spots” that they see moving about in their field of vision. Floaters are most visible when looking at a plain background, especially when reading or staring at a blank wall or blue sky. In most cases, floaters are just a nuisance, but occasionally they can be an indication of a more serious problem, such as a retinal tear, diabetic eye disease or inflammation in the eye. What Are Floaters? “Floaters are usually just small clumps of gel that form in the vitreous (vitree-us), the clear, gelatin-like fluid that fills the space inside the eye behind the lens. The vitreous accounts for about two-thirds of the volume and weight of the eye, and is responsible for maintaining the shape of the eye. The vitreous is 99% water. The remaining 1% is a mixture of collagen and hyaluronic acid which gives it its jelly-like characteristic,” explains Daniel Paskowitz, MD, PhD, an

ophthalmologist with credentials from Harvard and Johns Hopkins. The vitreous is important in maintaining the transparency needed for unobstructed passage of light rays from the lens to the retina where images are then transferred to the brain. What Causes Floaters? At birth, the vitreous has the consistency of gelatin and is perfectly transparent. With age, however, this gel shrinks and pulls away from the retina, forming fluid-filled cavities and collagen residues (clumps) which become noticeable in the field of vision as floaters. These cavities and clumps cast shadows on the retina (the light sensitive inner layer of the eye) which are seen as “floating” across the field of vision. Floaters are visible both to the patient looking out and, interestingly, usually to the eye doctor looking in. “At least 65 percent of people over age 60 have floaters. Floaters, however, can occur at any age (especially in people who are nearsighted or have had cataract surgery) and tend to increase in number with time,” adds David Scheidt, OD, optometrist and continuing education lecturer. Are Floaters Serious? In most cases, floaters are merely a harmless annoyance that may appear, disappear, remain stationary, dart around, or change in size. “Occasionally, however, they are an indication of a serious concern” warns Daniel Ferguson, MD, a former engineer and leading local eye surgeon. “For example, as the vitreous gel pulls away, the retina may be torn. This sometimes causes minor bleeding in the eye, which can appear as a cluster of new floaters. The tear can become even more serious if it progresses to a retinal detachment—separation of the retina from the back wall of the eye.” In other cases, floaters may be a sign of diabetic eye disease or inflammation in the eye. As such, you should schedule an immediate eye appointment if the onset of or increase in floaters is sudden, or appears as “cobwebs,” “spiders,” or an expanding “ink blot.” What Can Be Done About Floaters? Throughout the day, we typically move our eyes from side to side. “If a floater is annoying you, try looking up and down and in different directions. This motion causes the vitreous gel to swirl in different currents and may be effective in moving the floater out of your direct line of vision,” suggests Michael Raciti, MD, a partner at Eye Care Specialists ophthalmology practice. Rightsizing with Purpose: A Joyful Guide to Downsizing

O

ne of the biggest delays seniors face when considering a move is the overwhelming task of downsizing and decluttering. After 30 years of working with seniors, I can recognize the look on a client’s face the moment they open the door for a consultation, usually being tired, stressed, and unsure where to begin. The comments are often the same: “It’s too stressful.” “My kids don’t want anything.” “I just don’t know where to start.” “What if I need it later?” It’s completely normal to feel this way. But here’s the truth: Rightsizing is not a sprint—it’s a marathon. And it can be a beautiful one. This process is more than just sorting through things, it’s a chance to share stories, relive memories, and make thoughtful decisions about what comes next. The “5 Homes for Everything You Own”© Method by Universal Services:This

approach helps to feel clarity and structure to what can otherwise feel like chaos. As you go room by room, sort every item into one of these five categories: 1. Items moving to your new home 2. Items for family and friends 3. Items for consignment or an estate sale 4. Items for donation 5. Items for disposal Getting Started: Your Rightsizing Checklist Spring is the perfect time to refresh your space and your life. Here’s how to begin: • Gather supplies: Boxes, packing paper, tape, markers, and labels • Create a checklist of all areas to downsize and check each off as completed once you are done. Don’t forget often-overlooked spaces like the garage, attic, or the basement • Make a plan of action: Set aside one or two consistent days a week to stay on track • Tackle one room at a time and start with an easier space to build momentum •Set up clear containers (preferably see-through plastic bins) for keep, family, sale, donate, and trash • Create a memory box for things like record stories, notes, or photos that bring joy • Involve loved ones in the sorting process when possible; it can be a meaningful and nostalgic experience for everyone • Begin to work on your floor plan: Note the major furniture pieces you plan to take to visualize how they’ll fit in your new home • Hire a senior move manager to guide and support you through the proces • Reward yourself after completing each room—you deserve it! A Fresh Start with Confidence If you’re moving due to medical reasons, becoming an empty nester, or simply because maintaining a large home is too much, you’re not alone. Many of us face this chapter as we move toward retirement and reflect on how we want to spend the rest of our lives and how we wish to be remembered. Take your time. This is your story, and you get to write it your way. And remember: Less is more and joy is the goal. Do your homework on the companies and professionals you partner with during this transition. When done right, rightsizing isn’t just a move. It’s a gift to your future self.

LIVE WELL Volunteering

My Journey to Give Back to the Elderly

I

By Ester Milchtein, Volunteer Ombudsman n 2022 I applied to become a Volunteer Ombudsman to serve older adults living in long term care homes. I didn’t know Volunteer Ombudsmen and Ombudsmen existed until our family needed one. The word Ombudsman (Om-budz-man) is Scandinavian. In North America this has come to mean “helper,” “advocate,” or “voice of the people.” In Wisconsin, the Ombudsman Program is administered by the State of Wisconsin Board on Aging and Long Term Care (BOALTC), and advocacy services are provided at no cost. The mission of the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program is to seek resolution of problems and advocate for the rights of clients with the goal of enhancing quality of life and quality of care. Volunteer Ombudsmen are volunteers like me who work with residents and

their family members to address concerns and complaints by providing support, education, and empowerment. Volunteer Ombudsmen can assist residents by encouraging them to self-advocate or by providing a voice for those who cannot. A Volunteer Ombudsman meets with designated long term care community staff after each visit to share residents’ comments and observations. With resident permission, a Volunteer Ombudsman can report specific complaints to the nursing home and assisted living staff for resolution. A Volunteer Ombudsman also provides updates and referrals to the Regional Ombudsmen who are full-time employees of BOALTC. For many years my dear mother, of blessed memory, was assisted by an Ombudsman in another state. I am very grateful for all the meetings she attended, even when it was just to be a presence to show that my mother mattered. The Ombudsman was there to listen, support, and to explain the federal laws, namely those laws that pertained to the rights of long-term care consumers. She was someone outside of the facility, rehab, or hospital that could explain what we didn’t understand, and give an honest, down to earth explanation of my mother’s rights. An Ombudsman is someone who can be reached out to for assistance. Being a Volunteer Ombudsman for the Board on Aging and Long Term Care is a privilege for me and really does make a difference in the lives of the residents served, as well as myself.Anyone interested in applying to become a Volunteer Ombudsman can call 1-800-815-0015 for more information. http://longtermcare.wi.gov The mission of the Board on Aging and Long Term Care is to advocate for the interests of the state’s long term care consumers, to inform those consumers of their rights, and to educate the public at large about health care systems and long term care. Who We Serve The Board on Aging and Long Term Care and its programs are charged by Wisconsin Law to work to protect the interests of citizens of this state who are aged 60 or over and who reside in long term care facilities or who are consumers of managed care (Family Care, PACE, Partnership) or IRIS (Include, Respect, I Self-Direct) Programs through our Long Term Care Ombudsman Program. Our Volunteer Ombudsman Program serves individuals age 60 or over who are residents of nursing homes in Wisconsin. Our Medigap Helpline and Prescription Drug Helpline provides free confidential counseling services for all Medicare beneficiaries, including disabled individuals and those age 65 and over.

Oil Washing an Amazing Solution for Clearer Skin

M

By Kristine Stein, Certified Herbalist and Natural Health Practitioner any of us have grown up using harsh cleansers and exfoliating products; all in the hopes of attaining clear and healthy skin. Personally I grew up having acne-prone skin and have combated breakouts most of my life. Speaking from experience I know that it can be devastating and have detrimental effects on one’s self-image.

Problems with Commercial Skin Care Products & Solutions As I became more aware of what I was applying to my skin, I ditched the Noxzema and blemish remedies that contained benzoyl peroxide. These items were not only perpetuating my breakouts, but also drying out my skin. I came to realize that body care products and cosmetics are not regulated by the FDA, therefore companies can add whatever cheap chemicals and heavy metals that they wish, in order to make certain items more appealing to the consumer. For example, formaldehyde (embalming fluid) is added to body care items as a preservative, especially if the item is water based. However, formaldehyde is a known carcinogen (cancer-causing). Why would anyone want that on their skin?! After learning this, I began choosing items based on their ingredient list. If I could pronounce and understand what the ingredients were listed on the label, I would consider it safe and try the item. Eventually I started to use natural and organic products. The health of my skin improved, but I was still having breakouts. At the same time, I started to work on my diet; eliminating processed carbs, sugar and junk foods. My skin improved even further. However, I was not satisfied. I still wanted flawless skin. Oil Washing to Improve Acne While reading a book on ancient Greece, I came across information about their overall bathing and hygiene regimens. This included oil washing or oil cleansing. Since oil dissolves oil, massaging it into the skin actually helps soften and dissolve impurities. In Greece they used a tool called a strigil after applying olive oil to the body. This instrument scraped away dirt and sweat, leaving the skin clean. Often times after cleansing with olive oil, the ancient Greeks would then bathe in hot, steamy waters to open up the pores of the skin. I found this technique to be interesting so I did a little more research. I found that even today a lot of people have had great success in the improvement of their skin through oil washing. However, the very thought of massaging oil onto my face was very counterintuitive. I was still skeptical, but I decided to give it a try. Choosing High Quality Oils OIL <<page 54

The Reason You Should Lift 5 Sets of 15 Reps for Muscle Mass

D

By Bojana Galic , Medically Reviewed by Jenn Hopkins oing 5 sets of 15 reps can help you build muscle when you’re ready for a challenge. If gains are the goal, you may need to adjust your weightlifting program to 5 sets of 15 reps. Increasing the volume of your training could stimulate the hypertrophy (increase in muscle size) you’re looking for. Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy — muscle growth stimulated by the higher rep, higher set ranges — may be what your specific body needs to build mass, according to Holly Perkins, CSCS, author of ‌Lift To Get Lean‌. If you’re seeing a plateau, consider incorporating this lifting scheme. Building Muscle Mass in the Gym Building muscle requires a strategy. Hypertrophy occurs when you exercise with progressive overload (gradually increasing the weight you lift over time), according to the National Academy of Sports Medicine. You can achieve hypertrophy by lifting less weight with more sets and/or reps or more weight with fewer sets and/or reps, Perkins says. Bottom line: Every-

body responds differently and it takes some trial and error. The amount of weight, sets or reps you lift are all components of your training volume, according to CrossFit coach Maillard Howell, founder of The Beta Way, a holistic wellness program. The higher your training volume, the larger your muscle growth, given that you’re getting adequate sleep and nutrition, Howell says. While your current routine may involve a traditional routine of 3 sets of 10 reps per exercise, eventually your body will adapt and you will need to shift around some of those variables. This is why lifters generally increase their reps over time in order to continue fatiguing the muscle as it grows accustomed to the training, Howell says. Your Optimal Set and Rep Range The weight you lift varies by exercise, but performing each exercise at a higher set and rep range, like 5 sets of 15 reps, is one method to build muscle. Note: The weight you lift per rep will likely decrease at this high range of repetitions. If you’re increasing to 15 reps from 10 reps, Howell says to decrease the weight you previously used for 10 reps by 40 percent. “Err on the side of lighter if you’re trying this for the first time, as you may have a breakdown in technical form toward the end as fatigue sets in,” he says. While 5 sets of 15 reps is a good rep range for more seasoned lifters, Howell says beginners should try 5 sets of 10 reps. Start with a weight you can lift easily (about 50 percent of the heaviest you could lift one time). “This sounds super conservative, but trust me, it catches up,” he says. Incorporating Recovery and Nutrition Your muscles can’t grow without rest. While you sleep, the body stores glucose as glycogen in the muscles, which is then used to fuel exercise, according to the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA). Not to mention, while you sleep and recover, human growth hormone (HGH), floods into your body to repair and grow muscles post-exercise, according to the ISSA. Without quality sleep, this process is disrupted. When it comes to nutrition, protein is the most important macronutrient for building muscle. Aim to get 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of your body weight, according to a July 2017 meta-analysis in the ‌British Journal of Sports Medicine‌. For a 180-pound person, that would be about 130 grams of protein per day. Although protein hogs the spotlight as the muscle-building macro, carbohydrates are just as crucial. Carbs are partially converted to glycogen and supply REPS>>page 29

The Power of Dandelion Greens

O

ften seen as a pesky weed invading suburban lawns, dandelions are now being celebrated for their incredible health benefits. Grace O, founder and visionary behind FoodTrients, the website that champions the idea of food as medicine, reveals the surprising nutritional powerhouse hidden in these humble greens and why we should include them in our diet. Dandelion greens boast a remarkable array of health benefits: They can control blood sugar. Dandelion greens can lower blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. Diuretic effects. The high potassium content of dandelion greens means they work as a diuretic, helping to reduce water retention. Lower blood pressure. The diuretic effect of dandelions can help treat high blood pressure. While not as powerful as a prescription medication, it can still contribute to lowering blood pressure. Lower inflammation. Dandelion greens contain natural anti-inflammatories that can help avoid diseases like cancer and heart disease. Antioxidants for health on a cellular level. The antioxidants found in dandelion greens can protect your cells from stress and keep your immune system strong. Control cholesterol. Preliminary studies show they might be effective in metabolizing lipids and useful in lowering cholesterol. At just 25 calories per cup, raw dandelion greens are a source of: Calcium (103 mg) Folate (14.8 µg) Iron (1.7 mg) Potassium (218 mg) Vitamin A (279 µg) Vitamin C (19.2 mg) Where To Find Dandelion Greens: You can find these nutritious greens at specialty grocery stores like Whole Foods and Sprouts, as well as mainstream markets such as Kroeger and Publix. Farmers’ markets and online retailers like Amazon are also excellent sources. Alternatively, you might even discover them in your own backyard! Just ensure your lawn is chemical-free and not a favorite spot for neighborhood pets. Dandelion greens are available year-round, with their peak season in spring. Look for tender leaves and thin, non-woody stems to ensure the best quality. To view the complete article on Dandelion Greens click here. Give this delightful Dandelion recipe a try for breakfast or brunch: Sautéed Dandelion Greens with Eggs Serves 2-4 These sautéed dandelion greens with leeks, eggs, and feta cheese showcase this often under-appreciated leafy green. To help reduce bitterness, the dandelion greens are quickly blanched in salted boiling water. Between the eggs and the cheese, this is a protein-packed brunch or supper. Ingredients 4 cups chopped dandelion greens (about 1-2 bunches), thick stems removed and discarded 2 Tbs. butter 1 large leek, white and light green parts only sliced lengthwise and finely chopped 4 large eggs ¼ cup crumbled feta cheese Freshly ground black pepper to taste Instructions 1. Blanch the dandelion greens: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the chopped dandelion greens and blanch for 1-2 minutes. Drain the greens thoroughly. Using a wooden spoon, drain and press out as much liquid as possible. 2. Melt the butter in a 10-inch sauté or cast-iron pan set over medium heat. Sauté the leeks until tender, about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the drained dandelion greens one handful at a time. Cook each handful until wilted, then add more. 3. When the greens are wilted, use a spoon to create 4 shallow nests in the greens and crack the eggs into each one. Top with feta cheese and cook covered until the whites of the eggs are just set, about 5 minutes. Add ground pepper and serve immediately with toasted slices of crusty bread. Natural Eco-friendly Burial

Overview of Natural Burial Natural burial, or green burial, is the interment of an unembalmed body in an earthen grave. It is a burial practice that has been used for millennia and has seen added interest since the 1990s. Natural burial is dignified, eco-friendly, and minimizes the carbon footprint. Prairie Home Cemetery has a Section (12) devoted to Natural Burial in a Prairie setting. It is not unusual to see wildlife in the prairie. The prairie is a magnet for birds of all kinds and butterflies. In the summer you will notice bird watchers, walkers and people who sit and reflect in this beautiful area. Please visit but do not remove any seeds or flowers, it is strictly prohibited. Body Preparation With natural burial, there normally is no traditional embalming, and the body is wrapped in a burial shroud that is then interred. It may also be placed, either shrouded or unshrouded in a fully biodegradable casket. However with green friendly embalming

techniques, families may opt to have a service followed by burial. Please note burial normally takes place within 2448 hours of death. Caskets Caskets often times used are of a wicker, sea grass, or wood (or similar solid material) construction, with no metal. No burial vault is used (concrete or other nondegradable permanent device). Committal Area The new committal area has a dual purpose: To serve as a place where families and clergy can hold funeral services To serve as a place where memorialization of those buried will occur Cenotaphs Cenotaphs (large monuments) will be located within this area and hold the names of those individuals that are buried in the prairie. On December 3, 1849, Nathaniel Walton sold three acres of land to Waukesha township. This was the beginning of Prairie Home Cemetery. For more information contact 262.524-3540.

Natural burial offers several benefits, primarily focusing on environmental sustainability and reduced costs compared to traditional burial methods. It minimizes the use of chemicals, non-biodegradable materials, and the carbon footprint associated with traditional burials, supporting local ecosystems and biodiversity. Additionally, natural burials can be more affordable and offer a simpler, more personal final resting place. Carbon Footprint Reduction: Natural burials can reduce the environmental impact compared to cremation, which uses fossil fuels and emits carbon gases.

Nurse navigators have multiple touchpoints with a patient during their cancer journey. They assist with referrals to oncology dietitians, behavioral health therapists, genetic counselors, clinical research professionals, rehabilitation therapists and social workers. They also help coordinate and support tumor board conferences, help develop care plans and post-treatment survivorship plans, and lead free support group meetings. A patient’s responses to experiencing cancer can shift and evolve, so navigators help provide psychosocial support from diagnosis through treatment, follow-up and survivorship care. Research shows that patients who have support from a nurse navigator throughout their cancer journey feel more involved in their care, more informed and better prepared for the future. Use ProHealth Care’s provider directory to learn more about our health care team, read patient reviews, schedule appointments and watch introductory videos. You can also schedule an appointment by specialty or location, or call 262928-2745 to talk with one of our referral specialists. 26 MHL May 2025

The ICONS of Senior Exercise

S

even different kinds of exercise for seniors for great health in your older years In celebration of National Physical Fitness & Sports Month, we’re sharing our favorite exercises for older adults. SWIMMING Whether you’re performing the breaststroke, taking a water aerobics class, or playing Marco Polo with the grandkids, getting in the pool is a great way to increase your cardiovascular fitness while also strengthening your muscles. PILATES Pilates is known for being a low-impact strength program, but its focus on core strength and stability makes it especially great for older adults. CYCLING Another low-impact form of exercise, cycling is ideal for those who want to increase their leg strength, but can’t run or engage in other high-impact sports due to osteoporosis or joint issues. Cycling also helps improve cardiovascular health, metabolic health, function, and cognitive performance in older adults. WALKING Even if you can’t find the time to perform a structured workout, you likely have time to put one foot in front of the other to get where you need to go. Walking is a great, free workout that can have a big impact on your health. YOGA With a holistic approach to fitness, yoga helps build muscle strength, aerobic fitness, balance, core stability, mobility, and flexibility—all of which are important for older adults. BODYWEIGHT TRAINING One out of every three older adults experiences severe muscle loss and when it comes to fighting age-related abdominal fat, research shows that strength training is more time-efficient compared to cardiovascular exercise. RESISTANCE-BAND TRAINING Resistance bands are inexpensive and beginner-friendly exercise tools that are perfect for at-home workouts. In addition, bands can help you challenge your muscles in ways you might not be able to with equipment-free training. For more information visit www.charterseniorliving.com.

This entails twisting the lower body to alternate sides while jumping. The twister is beneficial for building and toning the calves, thighs, hips and buttocks. Advanced Move Another exercise for building lean muscle and toning the leg muscles is the double under. During this exercise, you turn the rope quickly so that it passes under your feet twice in one jump. This exercise also improves balance and coordination. The opening signifies the culmination of years of thoughtful planning and dedication, bringing a fresh perspective to senior living in Wisconsin’s Lake Country. The arrival of the first residents was met with warm welcomes from The Westerly’s dedicated staff, including Executive Director Mara Henningsen, Community Relations Director Stacy Giddings, and Koru Health President and Founder

Andy Lange. The moment was celebrated as a pivotal step in the community’s journey, setting the stage for a new chapter of active and connected living. Its design, inspired by the region’s rich history and natural beauty, creates a welcoming atmosphere where residents can truly thrive. “The design of senior living facilities can have a huge impact on residents’ quality of life,” states Galbraith Carnahan Architects, from a recent LinkedIn post. “Thoughtfully planned spaces, like The Westerly, offer amenities such as a tea room, an indoor pool, a golf simulator, and rooftop terraces—designed to enhance well-being, encourage social interaction, and foster physical health. As architects, we’re not just designing buildings but homes where every individual’s experience is at the center of the conversation. These spaces are built to support mental, physical, and emotional needs, making residents feel empowered and engaged. This is the power of human-centric architecture and design.” “Opening our doors to our first residents is a momentous occasion,” says Mara Henningsen, Executive Director of The Westerly Pewaukee. “We’ve created a community where residents can feel at home, connected, and empowered to live life to the fullest. Herbal Gardening & Its Benefits

Y

ou don’t need a green thumb to reap the benefits of herbs — cancer-fighting antioxidants, valuable nutrients, fat-free flavor, and more. Contact an Office in Your Area You don’t need a green thumb or a huge plot of land to reap the benefits of growing fresh herbs. Not only are herbs versatile and capable of lending great flavor to foods, and as natural remedies that benefit personal health and beauty, but the specific act of growing an herbal garden itself helps in many ways, especially for seniors.Herbal Gardening and Its Benefits Planting an herb garden is a wonderful way to enjoy the sights, smells and tastes of a wide variety of plants. Fresh herbs are often easy to cultivate and can grow in a small garden in the back yard, in pots on an outdoor patio or sunroom, or even in a window box inside a kitchen. Gardening is a terrific hobby and allows your senior loved one an opportunity to show his or her creativity. It is a great activity that can be shared with others like grandchildren, with friends in a club as a social activity, or even alone. Not only is gardening relaxing but it also improves hand-eye coordination, motor skills and self-esteem. Herbs have many values but a few of the most common uses include aromatherapy, medicinal, as seasonings and flavorings in foods and beverages, and in salads. Many herbs are chockfull of cancer-fighting antioxidants, valuable nutrients, fat-free flavor, and more. Before beginning any herbal treatment, caregivers should check with their senior’s doctor to make certain that it does not interfere with medications that he or she may already be taking. The word Aromatherapy is derived from ‘aroma’ meaning fragrance or smell, and ‘therapy’ meaning treatment. This ancient herbal art can enhance health in many ways. It is a stress reliever and mood enhancer and can be successful in treating minor disorders. Some examples are to stimulate the immune system and strengthen your body’s ability to resist disease and infections, to alleviate digestive problems like constipation and abdominal spasms, to enhance the respiratory system to treat coughs, sinusitis and tonsillitis, to ease muscular pain by promoting relaxation and toning, improving circulation and lowering blood pressure, combating stress-related disorders like insomnia and tension headaches, and even in treating anxiety, depression, and grief. Think of growing and using relaxing herbs such as chamomile, lavender or mint, rosemary, oregano, thyme, chive and sage for this purpose. The herbs can be dried and used in potpourri, simmered in pot on the stove to release their fragrance, hung upside down and used as natural air freshener, wrapped in a gauze bag and used in a bath or even dried and steeped to make herbal tea. In the medicinal world, herbs have been used for centuries to help with a variety of ailments. (Again, it’s important to check with your senior’s doctor before using any herbs for medicinal purposes.) ‘Old fashioned remedies’ are for the most part herb based and have been used for generations to help with conditions from upset stomachs to anxiety and even strengthening the immune system. The first apothecaries (pharmacies) were stocked with botanical ingredients. Garlic is considered to be good for the heart and cholesterol conditions and has been shown in studies to possess anti-bacterial an anti-viral properties effective in boosting the immune system and fighting all types of infections. Lemon balm, lavender, and marjoram can calm nerves and reduce anxiety. And peppermint is soothing and settling to a ‘sour stomach.’ ‘The wise, old herbs,’ as sage and rosemary are known, have been shown GARDEN>>page 47 32 MHL May 2025

A Community for Wellness For 100 years, VMP has strived to create an environment where older adults thrive and remain engaged and healthy. We have come a long way since our inception in 1925 as the non-profit Elmore Methodist Home for the Aged located at 11th and Kilbourn. While we keep an eye on the past and honor our Christian roots, we move forward with a clear vision to continually improve and grow our community. Before our current buildings were constructed, Methodist Manor’s first Executive Director Reverend George Palmer declared that our campus should be “a self-contained community with all the necessary facilities for communal living. It is intended to meet the spiritual, physical, and social needs of its residents.” Since the beginning, we have accomplished this lofty ideal by expanding options to accommodate the ever-evolving needs of older adults. VMP Healthcare & Community Living is set on over twenty park-like acres in the blossoming city of West Allis where business is booming, and residents benefit from a supportive community. We have been proud to call West Allis

Wisconsin’s Aging Wake-Up Call: What We Need to Fix istock.com/ FollowTheFlow

W

By Dr. John DenBoer hen people think of Wisconsin, they often picture friendly communities, beautiful lakes, and a strong sense of tradition. But behind that charm is a growing challenge we can’t afford to ignore: our population is aging—and fast. More and more Wisconsinites are crossing into retirement age, and with that comes a wave of needs that our systems aren’t fully prepared for. I’ve worked in the field of aging for years, and what’s happening here in Wisconsin mirrors what we’re seeing across the country—only more urgently in some areas. We Don’t Have Enough Caregivers Let’s start with the obvious: we simply don’t have enough people to care for our older adults. Senior living communities and in-home care providers are

short-staffed across the board. The people who are doing this work are often overworked, underpaid, and burning out. If we don’t invest in this workforce—through training, fair wages, and better working conditions—things will get worse before they get better. Facilities Are Struggling to Stay Open Many care facilities, especially smaller ones, are under real financial pressure. Some are closing their doors. Others are turning away residents because they can’t afford to accept public insurance or don’t have enough staff. This leaves families scrambling for options—and often having to make tough choices that don’t align with what’s best for their loved ones. Diversity Is Growing—So Must Our Cultural Awareness Wisconsin’s aging population isn’t just growing, it’s becoming more diverse. That’s a good thing, but it also means we need to rethink how we deliver care. Cultural understanding and language support aren’t “nice to haves”—they’re essentials if we want to treat people with dignity and respect. Rural Areas Are Especially Hard Hit If you live in a small town or rural part of Wisconsin, the challenges are magnified. There are fewer services, longer waitlists, and limited transportation. Older adults in these areas are often isolated and struggling to get basic care. We need creative, community-based solutions to close these gaps. What Needs to Happen This isn’t just a healthcare problem. It’s a human problem. And we can solve it—but only if we’re willing to act. We need to: • Support our caregivers with better training, pay, and working conditions. • Fund our facilities so they can keep their doors open and serve more people. • Make care inclusive for all backgrounds and languages. • Invest in rural infrastructure so no senior is left behind. Wisconsin has the heart and the values to be a leader in aging care. But good intentions aren’t enough—we need real change, backed by investment and action. Our seniors deserve nothing less. For more insights on how we can build a better future for aging in Wisconsin and beyond, visit www.drjohndenboer.com.

7 Tips for Safe Hiking

(48$/ +286,1* 23325781,7<

t’s important to follow tips for safe hiking when you’re venturing out on the trails. If you’re looking for a hobby that combines exercise, the outdoors, and scenic views, hiking is a great activity. Hiking offers the benefit of physical exercise and the rejuvenation of being in nature. It’s important to consider your hikes before you leave and ensure you follow safety guidelines, as well as consulting your healthcare provider if hiking is a new activity for you. Here are some tips for safe hiking to consider for your next outdoor adventure! Research Trails and Check Weather Conditions Before setting out on your hike, it’s important to choose a trail that matches your fitness level and hiking experience. Use reputable websites, park maps, and apps to read reviews and check the difficulty ratings of trails. Understanding the terrain, distance, elevation gain, and estimated completion time can help you adequately prepare and avoid unpleasant surprises. Also important is checking the general weather conditions for the area and taking a look on the day of your hike. Weather in the mountains and forests can change rapidly, and being caught unprepared in a rainstorm or heatwave can be dangerous. Check the forecast regularly in the days leading up to your hike and again several hours before you depart. Pack the Essentials What you bring on a hike can make the difference between a successful outing and a potentially dangerous situation. Hydration is key to a safe hike, so bring more water than you think you’ll need. Having constant access to water is important for your body and for a safe hiking experience. Pack highenergy, non-perishable snacks for a quick energy boost for your hikes as well. Granola bars, nuts, dried fruits, and protein bars are all great options. Always bring a map and a compass. GPS devices and smartphone apps are useful, but they can fail or run out of battery, so having a physical map as a backup is wise. You can also take a picture of the trail map ahead of time if you’re going on a simple route. Dress in layers to easily adapt to changing weather conditions or your comfort level during your hike. If you are in a more wooded area, along with wearing appropriate attire, be sure to bring bug spray along to keep from getting bitten. And, make sure to take and use sunscreen (especially on your ears!) during your hike to help prevent sun damage. Tell Someone Your Plans Always inform someone—a family member, friend, or park ranger—of your hiking plans. Include details such as your intended trail, start and end times, and who you’re going with. This ensures that people know your location and plans if something unexpected were to occur during your hike. While most hikes are simple, easy adventures, it’s smart to inform someone behind the scenes just in case the unexpected happens. Stay on Marked Trails Staying on the designated trails protects you from getting lost and minimizes your impact on the environment. Trail designers have carefully planned routes to sustain heavy foot traffic and avoid causing erosion or other environmental harm. Venturing off the path can damage fragile ecosystems and increase your risk of encountering dangerous terrain or wildlife. Staying on trails is the easiest way to ensure you’re on the right path and limits your risk of getting lost, too. Handle Wildlife Encounters Wisely

38 MHL April 2025

Understanding how to handle possible wildlife encounters is important for your safety and the animals’ safety. Research the types of wildlife you might encounter in the area and read up on how to behave if you meet them. Maintain a healthy and respectful distance if you do come across wildlife.

Diet And Exercise Tips For Preventing Osteoporosis

L

earn how to strengthen your bones with these seven tips.Bones are the foundation of a human body, quite literally connecting us from head to toe. They’re a core component of strength, support, and mobility. Healthy bones are dense and can protect us from breaks and fractures, improve our posture, and keep us feeling strong. But sometimes our bones can become porous and weaken, causing osteoporosis. Marked by a loss of bone, inadequate production of bone, or both, osteoporosis affects approximately one in two women and one in two men over age 50. This National Osteoporosis Awareness Month, we’re highlighting seven easy ways to boost bone strength through diet and exercise, including: Strengthening your bones relies on a holistic combination of healthy lifestyle choices. Continue reading below to learn more about these tips on how to strengthen

your bones. As with any new diet or fitness program, be sure to check with your doctor to find the right approach for you. 1. Eat as many vegetables as possible All vegetables are good for you in one way or another, but when it comes to bone health, leafy greens reign supreme. Embrace those healthy salads, because spinach, kale, lettuce, and other dark leafy greens are chock-full of the vitamins, minerals, and proteins that bones love. Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes are nourishing, bonehealthy choices as well, and there are many delicious ways to prepare them! 2. Incorporate strength training into your exercise routine Cardio is good for your heart health, but it’s not the only kind of exercise that matters. Resistance training and weight-bearing activities are associated with improved bone density. Hitting the strength machines and picking up free weights will help grow your muscles – andyour bones. You don’t have lift hundreds of pounds to see benefits, either. Ask a trainer to help you develop a routine that’s best for you, then start where you’re comfortable. If you’re doing at-home workouts, make it fun by turning on your favorite TV show or music while you work out. 3. Get enough calcium and vitamin D While calcium may be known to protect bones from osteoporosis, it’s not the only way to boost your bone strength. In fact, research shows that both calcium and vitamin D together can play a role. While calcium may be better known for its boneboosting effects, it’s the team approach with vitamin D that can help you absorb it for the maximum impact. Check this chartto see how much calcium and vitamin D you should consume and consult with your doctor about the right amounts for you. 4. Consume enough protein (without overdoing it) When it comes to protein, balance is key. Protein aids in calcium absorption, so if you’re not getting enough, it could affect your bone mass. Protein from vegetable sources seems to be particularly beneficial, so think high-protein veggies like peas, spinach, and Brussels sprouts, plus beans and nuts. However, too much protein may come with risks of its own. Excess animal protein carries the bulk of these risks, though fish is typically regarded as a safer source. 5. Maintain a healthy and stable weight When it comes to your weight, aim to be right in the middle. Being underweight is a risk factor for increased bone loss, while obesity puts more stress on bones and increases fracture risk. Talk to your doctor about the ideal weight for you and do your best to reach and maintain a mid-range weight to help you maintain your bone strength.

Cedarburg Art Museum: A Cultural Outing for Seniors

T

Written By: Discovery Senior Living here are more than 35,000 museums in the United States, USA Today reports, each offering something special. This is certainly the case with Cedarburg Art Museum, a local gem that combines history and creativity. As one of the senior-friendly museums in the area, it provides a welcoming space for older adults to explore Wisconsin’s artistic heritage. Located in a beautifully preserved Victorian building, it’s also one of the must-visit historical sites in Cedarburg. Cedarburg Art Museum: A Treasure of Art and History The Cedarburg Art Museum is a wonderful place for seniors to explore art and history in a welcoming environment. Located in a historic red brick Victorian

home, the museum showcases the artistic heritage of Wisconsin, with a special focus on Cedarburg and the surrounding areas. With free admission and a variety of exhibitions, it offers an engaging and accessible outing for seniors who appreciate creativity and culture. For residents of LakeHouse Cedarburg, visiting the museum is a great way to stay engaged with the community. The museum’s commitment to preserving local art makes it one of the most educational experiences for older adults interested in Wisconsin’s creative legacy. Exhibitions That Bring Art to Life One of the highlights of the Cedarburg Art Museum is its wide range of exhibitions, which change throughout the year. Currently, visitors can enjoy the Wisconsin Watercolor Society exhibition, which showcases the work of talented watercolor artists from across the state. Another fascinating exhibition is “A Vision for Cedarburg: The Legacy of E. Stephan Fischer.” Fischer, a former mayor, played a key role in preserving Cedarburg’s historic downtown. This exhibition features his paintings, drawings, and sculptures, reflecting his deep love for architecture and the town’s unique character. For those interested in portraiture, the upcoming “Models, Muses, & Figures” exhibition will be a must-see. Running from May 10th to August 3rd, 2025, this exhibit features portraits from the museum’s permanent collection, showcasing the evolution of portrait painting over time. Accessibility and Senior-Friendly Features The Cedarburg Art Museum is dedicated to making art accessible to everyone. While the historic nature of the building limits access to the second floor, the museum provides a wheelchair-accessible entrance at the rear of the building, leading to the first-floor galleries and gift shop. Seniors with mobility concerns can still enjoy a large portion of the museum’s collection and current exhibitions. For those who enjoy interactive experiences, the museum also offers Curator Hours on Fridays from 2 PM to 4 PM. This is an opportunity to meet the curator, ask questions, and gain deeper insights into the exhibitions. It’s a fantastic way for seniors to engage with the art and learn more about the creative process behind each piece. MUSEUM >>page 54

Let Your Backyarding Style Shine This Spring

Y

our backyard is an important extension of a home’s living space. By marrying your unique style with your backyard needs, you can create a more purposeful and valuable yard. Even small changes to your yard can make a big impact on how much you and your family enjoy spending time at home and doing what the TurfMutt Foundation calls “backyarding.” The first step is to decide which backyard style suits you best and understanding how you’ll use your dream yard. As you begin to dream of spring backyarding projects, here’s some inspiration from TurfMutt to jumpstart your creativity: Zen Garden. Serenity is the name of the game with a Zen garden. Elements could include a relaxing water feature, easy-to-maintain plants and shrubs, strategically placed lighting, and a hammock swinging gently in the breeze between two trees. Play Yard. A play yard has a single mission: to have fun with family and friends.

Create zones for the activities your family may want to tackle. Have a budding soccer star? Use the grassy area for a practice field. Need a place to cool off? Think about adding a pool or splash pad. Have kids and pets that need a place to get out the wiggles? Add a sandbox for digging. Remember, live plants, shrubs and trees make great boundaries between different zones in the yard. Entertainment Oasis. For those who view their home as the hottest spot in the neighborhood, an entertainment oasis is just the ticket. Seating is a must, so map out different areas for eating and conversing. A fire pit can help keep guests warm during chilly evening gatherings, and you can whip up a delicious dinner in an outdoor kitchen. If your neighbors are nearby, consider a wall of bushes or potted plants to create privacy. Hang string lights to create ambiance and add lots of plants and flowering bushes to create an inviting outdoor atmosphere. Wildlife Sanctuary. Those who love backyard critters should opt for a mix of native and adaptive plants that are recognizable and useful for local wildlife. A diverse array of flowering plants attracts birds, bees and butterflies. A bee fountain or hummingbird feeder can help pollinators thrive by providing imporistock.com/Halfpoint tant hydration. For other wildlife, provide natural sources of habitat by planting shrubs and trees. Outdoor Office. Taking work outdoors is all the rage for those who want to strike a good work-life balance. Set your outdoor office up for success by selecting a comfortable, quiet spot that offers seating and shade near electrical outlets and a strong Wi-Fi signal. The appropriate lighting and heating features can help extend the usefulness of the outdoor office. Jazz up your video conference background by making sure trees, bushes and plants are viewable or add a green wall or a tall potted plant behind your seat. For more information, sign up for Mutt Mail, a monthly e-newsletter with backyarding tips and all the news from the TurfMutt Foundation. The TurfMutt Foundation has advice for communities – invest in green space for the health and well-being of citizens. The phenomenon of taking indoor activities to the outdoor areas around us (like dining, working, exercising and entertaining) led the TurfMutt Foundation to coin the term “backyarding.” “In light of the growing importance of being outside, we’re seeing more communities invest in parks and other community green space as the best amenity to offer their residents,” says Kris Kiser, President & CEO of the TurfMutt Foundation, which has advocated for outdoor living and the use and care of green space for 15 years. “They are advancing the concept of backyarding at home now into more public green spaces.”

Tips for Touring a Senior Living Community

Located on a large, beautifully landscaped campus, Tudor Oaks is a unique retirement community for today’s seniors seeking a comfortable retirement lifestyle in a home-like atmosphere, filled with new opportunities and experiences.

W

hen you or a loved decide to downsize and move into an assisted living community or independent living apartment , it’s not just about safety or healthcare; it’s also about finding your new home. A place where you feel happy and comfortable! The transition into a retirement community is a major life decision. That’s why it is best to visit several different senior living communities. Look for quality, safety, and most importantly – a great reputation. Read the community’s online reviews. Though it’s tempting to choose a community that’s closest to your current home or possibly the most affordable option, don’t settle if you think there may be better options that can meet your current and future healthcare needs. 6 Tips for Touring Senior Communities in Muskego, WI After you’ve decided what communities you’ll be visiting, here are a few tips to keep in mind during your tour: 1) Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions, even if they seem unnecessary in the moment. Tour guides should be willing and happy to answer all questions that may arise. Ask what kind of meal plans are available and if the kitchen takes special requests for dietary requirements. Inquire when visitors are allowed and if overnight accommodations can be provided for them. Learn about the community’s social activities and whether transportation is provided to offcampus appointments and events. 2) Find reviews or feedback from residents. During your tour, make sure to talk to residents and ask how they feel about living in the community. Or, look for reviews of the community on the internet to see what others are saying. 3) Enjoy a meal. The food should taste great! Quality of food is important to your overall health and happiness; so if possible, join the residents for a meal. Find out if you can order items other than what is being offered, and if the kitchen takes note of special dietary restrictions or food allergies. 4) Observe the state of the building and grounds. Note how well-maintained the parking lots, walkways and landscaping are as you’re walking into the building. There should also be some outdoor areas for residents to gather and enjoy the fresh air. Once inside, pay attention to how clean the hallways and communal areas are. The senior community should smell fresh and be as dust-free as possible. Again, the best way to get an accurate “feel” for the community is to visit on an off-day; not during an open house. 5) Meet the staff and residents. While on your tour, talk with staff members as well as the residents. Take note of their attitudes; are they friendly, courteous, and seem happy to be there? Do the residents look like they are engaged and energized? The happiness of current residents can speak volumes about the community. 6) Go with your gut. If it seems difficult to make a final decision, remember to trust your instincts. Did it seem like you would be happier at one place over the other? Did you like the décor better, or were the staff slightly more welcoming at a certain community? In the end, it’s important to go with where you feel you’ll be most comfortable in the years to come. LIVE WELL Memory Care

The Top 5 Benefits of Socialization in Memory Care Communities

I

t can be a scary experience the first time mom can’t remember an important event or dad has trouble recalling your name. It may leave you angry, worried, and confused – a mix of the same emotions your loved one is also feeling. When a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia comes along, it not only impacts the individual but the entire family that loves and cares for them. But a diagnosis like this doesn’t mean your loved one has to sacrifice their quality of life. Why a Memory Care Community? One of the most significant drawbacks associated with memory loss is the feeling of social isolation and loneliness. Socialization is important for everyone, but it becomes even more critical for those with Alzheimer’s or related dementia. Socializing in a memory care community can provide your loved one with both human and environmental interaction that they may not otherwise be able to receive at home. All activities are held in a controlled climate, so you know your loved one is safe. Planned social activities can help stimulate their senses by experiencing new locations and different smells – even interacting with young children and

animals. If you’re feeling uneasy about the decision to move your loved one to a memory care community, here are the top five benefits that socialization can provide for them. Increases Feelings of Self-Worth It’s easy for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia to feel devalued and lose their sense of self-worth along with their diagnosis. They can have feelings of losing control and not being able to trust their own judgment. This can cause anxiety and depression. It’s vital to treat a person with memory loss as kindly and politely as possible. This will help evoke feelings of being worthwhile and valued. In a memory care community, your loved one will be able to interact with others and perform small tasks. Even ordinary tasks such as helping set a meal table and washing up afterward can ease feelings of helplessness and improve feelings of self-worth and belonging. Decreases Sense of Loneliness Feelings of loneliness can be complex. Loneliness doesn’t only refer to being physically alone. People with dementia can feel lonely if they aren’t a part of a group or conversation. They can also feel lonely if they’re having a hard time participating in an activity. Memory care communities use controlled socialization and individualized care to help combat feelings of loneliness. Research has shown that even one hour per week of socialization can help dementia patients by reducing agitation levels and improving their quality of life. Increases Awareness Increased awareness of the ‘here and now’ can help your loved one with memory loss. Any activity – from playing a game to petting an animal – helps them focus on what is happening right in front of them. Being mindful of the present moment can help strengthen the brain and make them more equipped to handle their emotions. Memory care communities provide a daily routine for your loved one, which gives them a sense of normal structure. Structured routines help stimulate the part of the brain that is connected to time and place, so people with memory loss have more of a sense of a “start” and “end” point.2 Supports Brain Health Think of your brain as a muscle – it needs activity to stay fit. Social interaction can have some major positive effects on the brain. ASSISTED>>page 47

Studies have shown that people who are offered a wide range of social activities in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s or dementia have an overall slower rate of memory loss. Memory care communities offer daily activities so your loved one has a variety of opportunities to engage in social and meaningful hobbies that they enjoy. Even if they don’t prefer a group setting, socializing one-on-one with another resident or caregiver can also be beneficial. Creates Overall Happiness Put yourself in your loved one’s shoes. Imagine how frustrating it would be to feel helpless and out of control because you can’t remember things. You’re no longer able to take care of yourself and must depend on others to do so. People with memory loss may be agitated and lash out – not because they are angry with you – but frustrated because of the restrictions dementia has put on their lives. Visit www.lumiamequon.com.

GARDEN<<page 32 in studies to enhance brain function and may help to ward away Alzheimer’s disease. Seasonings are of course the most common uses of herbs found in any herb garden. Herbs add a lot of flavor to recipes besides providing various health benefits. No herb garden would be complete without basil, oregano, sage, thyme, chives or mint to season up dinner each and every night. Consider planting some lemon basil, lemon thyme, Thai thyme or another variation of any number of great herbs that offer different flavors. Use the herbs in cooking. You can add delicious, healthy herbs to marinades, sauces and soups. Herbal vinegars are not only decorative but mineral-rich as well. Salads can be made with many herbs and are a special treat during the spring and summer months. Consider a borage with some mesclun lettuces topped with some chives, dill, oregano and basil. It doesn’t have to stop there, many herbs lend themselves to being eaten in their raw form and add great flavor to any salad. When looking for a healthy remedy to help stay engaged, active and healthy, a small herb garden can be just what the doctor ordered in more ways than one! games and drawing community sports teams from all over Menomonee Falls. Planning a Senior-Friendly Picnic A picnic outing to Willowood Park is a picturesque experience for family members, as well as safe outdoor recreation for seniors. Start by choosing an easy-to-reach spot located near parking spots and park restrooms. Aim for mid-morning or late afternoon picnics, avoiding the direct sunlight of noon; consider a morning picnic brunch! Also, you may want to avoid picnicking during Wisconsin’s hottest summer months to avoid fatigue and discomfort. Pack comfortable seating for the outing, including folding chairs, reading pillows, back supports, and plenty of picnic blankets. Prepare easy-to-eat foods for the outing, primarily cold finger foods like sandwiches, salads, and fruits. Bring plenty of reusable water bottles, juice boxes for the little ones, sodas for the older ones, ice tea, and other cold drinks; a family member can pack these in a secure portable ice cooler. Bring along low-key activities like card games, board games, or reading material to enjoy later. Involve everyone in the planning process to ensure a smooth picnic experience. Plan a Safe and Enjoyable Visit to Willowood Park There are several things to keep in mind to ensure a safe and healthy visit to the park. For example, always plan ahead; study the park map, locate restroom and accessibility features, and check the weather forecast before heading out. Menomonee Falls is a four-season town. Summer is hot and humid, with mean temperatures in July around the mid80s Fahrenheit. Winter is cold, with mean temperatures in January in the teens. Spring and fall have cooler temperatures and are, therefore, good times to go to a park.

Sleep Disruptions

Linked to Health Problems

T

he days may be shorter right now, but darker evenings do not necessarily mean sleep comes more easily. The Centers for Disease Control report that nearly ⅓ of adults report they get less than the recommended seven or more hours each night. While it may seem like sleep is a luxury, getting enough rest can make or break your overall health.Adults over the age of 60 are especially vulnerable to physical and emotional health consequences caused by lack of sleep, including Type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and even obesity. Here’s what you need to know about keeping yourself and your aging loved one, as healthy as possible. How Much Sleep Do Seniors Need? The Centers for Disease Control recommends seniors over the age of 60 get 79 hours of sleep per night. While this number may seem attainable at first glance, sleep disturbances caused by medication side effects, pain, or cognitive decline can make falling asleep and staying asleep difficult for most older adults. Sleep can be elusive for older adults, especially those living with Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. As the disease progresses, seniors can have trouble regulating their sleep patterns, and their natural circadian rhythm can evaporate. This often translates into too much sleeping during the day and not enough at nighttime. Unfortunately, sleeping too much during the day can cause increased isolation from peers, which leads to the disease progressing even faster.

It’s a vicious cycle that begins with the inability to fall asleep and stay asleep during the nighttime hours. Dangers of Sleep Disruptions Older adults, whether they have dementia or not, face serious health consequences due to insomnia or other sleep disruptions. In fact, a recent study published in Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, found a link between insomnia and stroke, as well as between insomnia and heart attacks. Beyond this recent research, there have also been studies demonstrating a lack of consistent sleep leading to obesity, depression, and even anxiety. How to Get Enough Sleep You can prevent health problems by making good sleep habits a priority in your life. You can also encourage the older adults in your life to pick up some habits that lead to better sleep as well. Consider any of the following as you start your quest for better sleep: Consult your loved one’s physician about their sleep disruptions. Decline sleep medications and instead work with the doctor to review current prescriptions to see if there are any that are contra-indicated or that could prevent steady sleep. Limit napping during the day. Instead, beat afternoon fatigue with movement. Take a walk around the block, try an online yoga class for seniors, or participate in a group exercise class. Stick to a routine. Wake up at a consistent time and begin getting ready for bed at a consistent time. Limit too much television or other screen time beginning a few hours before heading to bed. Try reading or listening to music instead. Get pain under control, especially if your loved one has breakthrough pain that wakes them up at night. Work with your loved one’s doctor to find a pain reduction regimen that could be more practical for sleeping habits. For seniors living with dementia, meaningful activity during the day to pre:Rawpixel vent sleeping and focus on a routinized schedule in the evening hours, which will signal the brain to get ready for sleep. If your loved one is struggling with consistent sleep, you may need additional support or resources. Call the team at Oasis Senior Advisors. 5 Ways to Embrace Wellness for Seniors

J

ust a few decades ago, the idea of someone being a “senior” meant something much different than it does today. These days, people are living longer, healthier lives, both physically and emotionally. For older people, it is never too late to take steps towards living a life of overall wellness. What a person does today will have a profound influence on their health in the future. If you have a senior loved one, here are 5 great ways you can help them embrace a life of wellness, no matter what their age. It’s Never Too Late to Quit an Unhealthy Habit Everyone knows that lifestyle habits such as smoking, overeating, or not exercising are not good for long term health and longevity. Regardless of your loved one’s age, it’s never too late to turn over a new leaf and start developing healthier habits. Encourage them to take small steps in developing healthier life style routines. Even the slightest change will be beneficial to them both now and in the future. Exercise The physical and emotional benefits of exercise are almost endless for seniors. Not only does movement help keep muscles and joints limber, but exercise is also a great emotional stress reliever as well. Help your loved one determine what kind of exercise they can do, in alignment with their physical capabilities. Encourage them to develop a workout routine that is sustainable long-term. Stay Socially Engaged Relationships with other people make life more enjoyable. Encourage your loved one to keep up their friendships with peers, and family members. There are many ways for seniors to make new friends by participating in various events and social activities. Some people tend to isolate more as they get older. Help your loved one enjoy all that life has to offer by engaging with other like-minded people. Keep the Mind Sharp Staying mentally alert is one of the most important things an older person can do to optimize wellness in their lives. Encourage your loved one to read books, watch meaningful movies, or tv shows, or take a class. It’s never too late to learn something new. Evidence shows that keeping the mind stimulated is one of the best ways to prevent or slow down cognitive decline. World Health Day 2025 Theme & Its Relevance The official theme for World Health Day 2025 is “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.” The campaign will urge governments and the health community to increase efforts to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths and to prioritize women’s longer-term health and well-being through improved healthcare policies and resources. This theme underscores the importance of lifelong health awareness, promoting habits and healthcare access that benefit individuals across all stages of life. For seniors, it highlights how good health practices early on can lead to a future where aging is not a burden but a hopeful, fulfilling chapter of life.

Start Planning For Retirement With These Steps

W

By Better Business Bureau hether you’ve just started your career or are nearing the end of it, retirement is probably at the top of your mind. Setting goals and planning are essential to ensure you have enough money to enjoy your retirement however you wish, but when should you start planning? There’s no specific age when you must start planning for retirement, but the earlier you can start saving money, the better. Fidelity Investments recommends you save at least one time your salary by age 30 and 10 times your salary by age 67. If you’ve already started saving, great! If you haven’t, don’t worry! It’s never too late to start – consider these steps to begin planning. First, determine your ideal retirement age and how much money you will need in retirement. AARP shares that you’ll need about 80 percent of your pre-retirement income to maintain your current lifestyle in retirement. Take time and determine what you anticipate spending during retirement and whether any lifestyle changes require additional funds. If you need more assistance calculating this total, NerdWallet offers a free retirement calculator to estimate how much money you will need.

You can also work with a trusted financial consultant who offers retirement planning services to help you start this process. They can provide more details on inflation, the stock market, social security benefits, and investment programs, which can impact your retirement savings. Second, once you’ve determined how much money you will need, it’s time to choose a retirement savings plan. You may have heard of 401(k)s, 403(b)s, IRAs, or RRSPs if you live in Canada. But what do all these numbers and letters mean? These are all types of retirement savings accounts that may or may not be available to you, depending on your unique situation. Some employers offer plans with added benefits like an employer’s match, and some accounts can be opened at your local bank, credit union, or an online brokerage. Your employer or government may also offer pension plans, and if you’re self-employed, there are other retirement savings options for you, too. Now, that’s a lot to unpack, so working with a reputable financial consultant specializing in retirement planning services is a good idea to ensure you fully understand your options and feel confident in your choices. Your financial consultant can evaluate your options and help you determine which savings plan is best for you. They can also explain the difference between saving pre-tax and post-tax dollars, how to properly allocate those funds into your accounts, and annual contribution limits. In addition, your financial consultant can guide you on investing the funds in your accounts based on your age, how much money you need, and when you plan to retire. After determining how much money you will need and deciding on a retirement plan, start a budget that includes your monthly savings for retirement. Be sure that your monthly savings will help you reach your goals. If you need more guidance on budgeting, check out BBB’s tip on 10 things to help you create a budget and stick to it. Remember to check in on your savings and budgets often to ensure you are still on track to reach your retirement goals. Recent life events like getting a new job or a promotion, losing a job, starting a family, or receiving an inheritance can impact your spending and saving goals. Re-evaluate your situation annually and adjust your budgets as needed. As you approach retirement, your financial consultant may adjust your fund investments to ensure you meet your goals. Are you looking for assistance with the retirement planning process? Finding the right financial consultant for retirement planning can be one of your most important decisions. Always look for the BBB Seal when searching for a financial consultant.

By Charles Platkin, PhD, JD, MPH, Photo Credit istock.com/ whyframestudio or the millions living with arthritis, the quest for relief often leads beyond prescription medications to the kitchen and supplement aisle. As daily activities become challenging exercises in pain management, many are turning to food and natural supplements to help manage their symptoms and improve quality of life. Arthritis affects over 54 million American adults and comes in more than 100 different forms. The most common types—rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA)—may have different causes, but both involve inflammation that drives pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. While conventional medications play an important role in treatment, their side effects—including stomach problems, fatigue, and increased cardiovascular risks—push many to explore complementary approaches. But separating fact from fiction in the world of natural remedies can be challenging. Dietary Approaches with Proven Benefits Our research team, using advanced AI research tools to analyze clinical studies, has found that certain eating patterns can significantly reduce arthritis symptoms and inflammation. These aren’t miracle cures, but they can make a meaningful difference in daily comfort and function. Mediterranean Diet: A Strong Foundation The Mediterranean diet—rich in vegetables, fruits, olive oil, fish, and whole grains—consistently shows benefits for arthritis sufferers. People with rheumatoid arthritis following this eating pattern experience measurable improvements in disease activity and fewer swollen joints. The Mediterranean diet works through multiple pathways. It provides antiinflammatory compounds like oleocanthal in olive oil, which functions similarly to ibuprofen, along with beneficial omega-3 fatty acids from fish. The diet’s emphasis on fruits and vegetables also delivers antioxidants that help protect joints from oxidative damage, while its lower content of processed foods reduces exposure to inflammatory compounds. Plant-Based Eating: Powerful Results Vegan and vegetarian diets show even more dramatic benefits for some arthritis patients. Research has found that a plant-based eating pattern can significantly reduce joint inflammation and pain. This approach likely works by eliminating potential inflammatory triggers from animal products while increasing plant compounds that naturally combat inflammation. The high fiber content also supports a healthy gut microbiome— increasingly recognized as important for immune system balance and inflammation control. Elimination Diets: Personalized Relief For some arthritis sufferers, removing specific foods provides significant relief. Research has shown that diets eliminating meat, gluten, and dairy can reduce inflammatory markers and improve quality of life for certain patients. These “privative diets” work by removing potential trigger foods that may cause inflammatory responses in sensitive individuals. While not necessary for everyone, they can be transformative for those with specific food sensitivities. Supplements Supported by Science Beyond dietary patterns, specific supplements show promise for arthritis relief: Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Essential for RA For rheumatoid arthritis patients, omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil stand out as particularly effective. Clinical studies show they can reduce tender joint count, morning stiffness, and overall disease activity. The research on omega-3s for RA is quite compelling. At doses around 2.5 grams of EPA and DHA daily, many patients experience significant symptom improvement, with some even able to reduce their medication use.

Interestingly, while omega-3s work well for RA, they show less benefit for osteoarthritis—highlighting the importance of matching supplements to your specific condition. Curcumin: Turmeric’s Golden Compound Curcumin—the active component in turmeric—has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that benefit osteoarthritis patients. At doses around 1000mg daily, it significantly improves pain and physical function in knee OA. Curcumin blocks inflammatory enzymes through mechanisms similar to pharmaceuticals but with fewer side effects. However, because curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own, look for supplements that include black pepper extract (piperine) or use enhanced delivery systems for better absorption. Ginger: Natural Pain Reliever Ginger offers natural relief for osteoarthritis pain. Research shows that ginger supplements not only reduce pain but also lower inflammatory markers without the digestive side effects common with pain medications. The active compounds in ginger—gingerols and shogaols—interrupt inflammatory pathways while offering additional benefits like improving circulation and digestive health. A typical effective dose is around 250mg daily. Vitamin D: The Essential Nutrient Many arthritis patients have insufficient vitamin D levels, and correcting this deficiency can improve symptoms. Supplementation with 2000-3000 IU daily often leads to reduced pain and better physical function. Vitamin D plays crucial roles in both bone health and immune regulation, providing dual benefits for arthritis sufferers. Regular blood testing can help determine if supplementation is needed and guide appropriate dosing. Putting It All Together: A Practical Approach For those looking to use diet and supplements to manage arthritis, I recommend a stepped approach: Start with dietary foundations. Adopt Mediterranean diet principles as a baseline—more vegetables and fruits, olive oil as your main fat, fatty fish regularly, and fewer processed foods. Consider appropriate supplements based on your arthritis type: For rheumatoid arthritis: Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D (if deficient) For osteoarthritis: Curcumin, ginger, vitamin D (if deficient) Manage your weight. Excess weight increases inflammation and puts mechanical stress on joints. Even modest weight loss significantly reduces symptoms. Add complementary lifestyle practices: Regular, gentle movement (swimming, walking, yoga) Stress management techniques (meditation, deep breathing) Good sleep hygiene Track your response. Keep a simple journal noting pain levels, stiffness, and activities you can perform. This helps identify what’s working for your unique situation. Beyond Diet: The Whole-Body Approach While diet and supplements form important tools in arthritis management, they work best within a comprehensive approach. Think of diet as one piece of the puzzle. Movement, stress management, and sleep quality all influence inflammation levels and pain perception. Low-impact exercises like water aerobics, walking, and tai chi maintain joint mobility without causing further damage. Stress management is equally important—chronic stress increases inflammatory hormones that can worsen arthritis symptoms. Important Cautions Natural doesn’t always mean risk-free. When exploring dietary supplements: Consult healthcare providers before starting supplements, especially if you take medications Choose quality products from reputable manufacturers with third-party testing Start with recommended doses rather than assuming more is better Be patient—natural approaches often take weeks to show their full benefits The Road Ahead The future of arthritis nutrition looks promising as research continues to expand. Emerging areas include personalized approaches based on individual genetic factors and microbiome composition, along with exploration of timing strategies for optimal nutrient effects. For the millions living with arthritis pain, these evidence-based nutritional strategies offer new avenues for relief. While they may not replace conventional treatments entirely, they provide valuable tools to enhance comfort, function, and quality of life—often with minimal side effects. By understanding and applying the science behind food and supplements, arthritis sufferers can take a more active role in managing their condition and reclaiming activities that bring joy and meaning to daily life. /foodmedcenter.org

OIL <<page 20

My first oil cleansing blend consisted of equal parts of jojoba, sunflower, and grapeseed oils. I massaged the oil mixture into my face and neck for about a minute and then removed the oil with a hot and steamy washcloth (as hot and steamy as I could handle comfortably). I would actually get the washcloth wet and apply the steamy cloth to my face and neck about 3 times, rinsing the washcloth in between each time with hot water. If my skin seemed dry afterward, I would apply light oils such as argan or jojoba. Why Oil Washing Works It took a few weeks to notice the improvement in my skin, but the difference was amazing! I had a lot less breakouts and my skin wasn’t so dry. A lot of times, I don’t even have to apply a moisturizer after washing my face, which was a must previous to the oil washing. The cleansers that I used before would actually strip my skin of beneficial oils, thus drying it out. Our skin has a natural pH of about 5.5, which is slightly acidic. This acidic condition actually helps protect our skin from harmful bacteria and environmental conditions and is known as the acid mantle. When you “wash” away your acid mantle, your skin is more susceptible to invading microbial action and environmental factors, creating conditions such as inflammation and dry skin. We also have beneficial bacteria that exist on the surface of the skin. These beneficial skin microbiota help prevent transient harmful bacteria from colonizing and causing problems on the skin’s surface. Washing with conventional cleansers can disrupt your unique population of skin flora, thus washing away your natural protection. Try it out! Oil washing has been a great experience for me. I wish I had known about this method years earlier. I have been doing this for about two years now and I love it! If you haven’t tried it and are curious, I highly recommend giving it a chance. And give it a few weeks. Your skin needs to adjust to your new cleansing technique! MUSEUM <<page 41

Pairing a museum visit with a leisurely walk or a cup of coffee at a local café can turn a simple outing into a memorable experience.

FLOATERS<<page 1113

If your floaters are especially bothersome, however, you may be a candidate for vitreolysis. Vitreolysis: Laser Treatment for Floaters Until recently, the only effective way to treat floaters was with a “vitrectomy,” an invasive, cutting surgical procedure involving removal of all or part of the vitreous humor and replacement with an electrolyte saltwater solution. “Because this procedure has a significant risk of bleeding, infection and cataract formation, most patients were typically told to forego surgery and ‘just live with it.’ Now, however, there is a new option. Vitreolysis is a non-invasive, quick, painless, outpatient laser procedure that may reduce or eliminate floaters that are significantly distracting enough that they affect your comfort and ability to perform tasks,” says Brett Rhode, MD, Head of Ophthalmology at Aurora Sinai Medical Center. Are you a candidate for treatment? “If it has been confirmed that your floaters are not a sign of something more serious, yet they are significantly distracting enough that they affect your comfort and ability to perform tasks, you may be eligible for vitreolysis,” notes Paskowitz. “The best candidates are patients who have had their floaters for at least six months. Not all floaters, however, are suited for laser treatment. Your eye care specialist will conduct a comprehensive dilated eye examination to determine if vitreolysis is appropriate for you. If yes, the procedure is typically covered by insurance.” More information The doctors quoted above are partners at Eye Care Specialists, one of the state’s leading ophthalmology practices. They offer free booklets and handouts on AMD, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, floaters & flashes, Vitreolysis, low vision, etc., by calling 414-321-7520 ext. 207 or visiting www.eyecarespecialists.net. Views on Aging are Always Changing

People are living longer. In 1970, the average life expectancy at birth was 70.8 years; in 2000, it was 76.9 years; and by 2030 is it estimated that the “oldestold,” age 85 and older, could grow to 10 million people. It no longer necessarily means physical decline and illness—in the last two decades, the rate of disability among older people has declined dramatically. The (NIA), part of the Federal Government’s National Institutes of Health (NIH), investigates ways to support healthy aging and prevent or delay the onset of diseases that disproportionately affect us as we age. These studies not only may increase what is known as “active life expectancy”—the time of advancing years free of disability—but also may promote longevity. NIA’s research includes hormone and dietary approaches, including calorie restriction. Results from NIA-sponsored studies and others are likely to improve our understanding of the benefits and risks of hormone supplements, calorie restriction, and other interventions to promote healthy aging. This tip sheet provides an overview of what we know about hormone supplements and calorie restriction and the research needed to learn more. Until we have a better understanding, it is a good idea to be skeptical of claims that hormone or other supplements can solve your age-related problems. Instead, focus on what is known to help promote healthy aging: healthy eating and physical activity. What Is a Hormone? The word “hormone” comes from the Greek word, hormo, meaning to set in motion. Hormones are chemical messengers that set in motion different processes to keep our bodies working properly. For example, they are involved in our metabolism, immune function, sexual reproduction, and growth. Hormones are made by specialized groups of cells within the body’s glands. The glands—such as the pituitary, thyroid, adrenals, ovaries, and testes—release hormones into the body as needed to stimulate, regulate, and control the function of other various tissues and organs involved in biological processes. We cannot survive without hormones. As children, hormones help us “grow up.” In teenagers, they drive puberty. As we get older, some of our hormone levels naturally decline. But what does that mean? Scientists do not know exactly. In order to know more, NIA investigates how replenishing hormones in older people affects frailty and function. May 2025 MHL 55
