THE BIGGEST HEALTHCARE AWARDS IN THE REGION

28th October 2026 - Grand Hyatt Dubai

Nominate now! www.healthmagazine.ae

Publisher's Note As Thumbay Group prepares to enter its 30th year of progress and contribution in the UAE, it is an opportune moment to pause, reflect, and look ahead. Three decades ago, we began with a simple yet ambitious vision: that healthcare and education, developed together, could transform the way a region cares for and invests in its people. Over the years, that vision has evolved into an integrated Academic Health System serving patients, students, professionals, and communities across the UAE and beyond.

Dr. Thumbay Moideen Founder President, Thumbay Group

The past year has brought significant milestones that further strengthen every dimension of this ecosystem. Our healthcare network reaffirmed its commitment to clinical excellence through JCI Enterprise Reaccreditation across Thumbay University Hospital and our network of hospitals and clinics. Enterpriselevel accreditation provides independent recognition that the highest standards of quality, patient safety, and clinical care are applied consistently across our institutions and at every point of patient contact. Research has also taken a significant step forward with the groundbreaking of the Thumbay International Research Centre. The Centre will provide our faculty, researchers, and clinicians with the infrastructure and environment needed to pursue research addressing the healthcare priorities of this region and contributing to the advancement of global medical knowledge. Our commitment to wellbeing extends beyond clinical care. Body & Soul Spa expanded its offerings with the opening of a dedicated men’s grooming centre, providing specialised self-care services in an environment designed exclusively for men. The continued growth of Zo & Mo Opticals further reflects our broader commitment to health, wellness, and enhancing everyday quality of life. Marking 25 years of diagnostic excellence in the UAE, Thumbay Labs, the Northern Emirates’ largest network of academic diagnostic referral laboratories, achieved ISO 15189:2022 accreditation, the internationally recognised standard for quality and competence in medical laboratories. This milestone complements its existing College of American Pathologists (CAP) accreditation, giving Thumbay Labs two of the most respected quality certifications in the field and further reinforcing its commitment to accuracy, reliability, and excellence in diagnostics. At Gulf Medical University (GMU), our academic partnerships continued to expand, opening new avenues for education, research, and clinical innovation. Our collaboration with the Gulf Centre for Longevity Sciences is creating new opportunities in longevity and preventive medicine—fields that are poised to play an increasingly important role in

WORDS OF INSPIRATION

the future of healthcare. We also expanded the Thumbay International Pathway, introducing new residency and training opportunities through our partnerships with European universities. This year, GMU also conferred two honorary doctorates in recognition of distinguished contributions to society. Philanthropist and entrepreneur Dr. Faizal E. Kottikollon was awarded the Doctor of Humane Letters (LHD) Honoris Causa in recognition of his leadership, community impact, and global contributions. Dr. Mohammed Meeran, Founder and Chairman of Electric Way, received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (LHD) in recognition of his lifelong commitment to education, healthcare, and community welfare. Their journeys serve as powerful reminders of the impact that purpose-driven leadership can have on communities and generations. Thumbay Media has continued its evolution into a diverse and growing publishing house. Alongside HEALTH Magazine, Living Gulf, and Gulf Education, we introduced Gulf Culinary & Hospitality and Gulf Pets & Vets, each created to serve distinct communities and provide meaningful platforms for knowledge, engagement, and dialogue. The Annual Health Awards 2026 has also generated an encouraging response, with nominations continuing across more than 50 categories. The dedicated segment recognising 15 outstanding UAE nationals highlights the remarkable depth of talent and contribution within the country’s healthcare sector. I extend my sincere appreciation to everyone who participated and contributed to the awards. The winners will be announced at the grand ceremony in Dubai on 28 October, following an independent and fully audited evaluation process. Thirty years is a significant milestone in the life of an institution, yet a relatively short chapter in the remarkable story of a nation. The UAE has given us an environment of opportunity, confidence, ambition, and partnership in which to build and grow. As we approach our fourth decade, our commitment remains unchanged: to invest in knowledge, expand access to quality healthcare and education, nurture innovation, and build institutions designed to create lasting value for generations to come. The journey that began three decades ago continues—with gratitude for the past, confidence in the present, and a clear vision for the future.

Cover Story

Immunization: The world’s most sustainable public health tool August is recognized as the International Immunization Awareness Month. The spotlight shines on the crucial role vaccines play in providing a sustainable, costeffective solution for preventing many public health crises, one jab at a time. Vaccines are not only meant for babies. From adolescence and pregnancy to adulthood, travel and healthy ageing, immunization is a lifelong investment in health.

life on earth. It is a life-long battle to prevent a localized infestation from blowing out-of-proportions into an epidemic or pandemic threatening public health, at-large.

Covid -19 symptoms. The vaccination campaign worldwide helped check the onslaught of this pandemic which could have been worse without the jabs.

If we were to place the world in a petri-dish, under a microscope, we would be able to see that it is swarming with millions of pathogens and viruses threatening

The COVID-19 pandemic is the most reason case in point, which caused millions of deaths worldwide and resulted in ill-health and frailty for patients dealing with long-term

virus (swine flue), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) or the mutating strains of Influenza A&B that often causes a huge drain on public health expenditure while also causing serious health crisis. The cost-effective solution to prevent all this is building herd immunity in the community, through vaccine jabs that either contain a weaker version of the virus or are messenger Ribo Nucleic Acid (mRNA). In the past we have seen lethal diseases such as Smallpox being eradicated. Polio too has been eliminated from most parts of the world. Diseases such as Diphtheria, Measles, Tetanus and Whooping cough, once responsible for countless childhood deaths, have become uncommon in many countries because generations of people rolled up their sleeves for a simple shot. The numbers tell an extraordinary story. According to WHO, immunization prevents an estimated 3.5 million to 5 million deaths every year, making it one of the most effective and cost-efficient public health interventions ever

developed. Yet despite decades of progress, 13.5 million children worldwide were zero-dose in 2025, leaving them vulnerable to diseases that modern medicine can largely prevent.

Internationally renowned vaccine expert Melanie Ott concisely explained the significance of vaccines in a write-up in defense of vaccination at a time when many anti-vaxxers have been condemning it. She said, “I am one of those scientists. I want people to know that vaccines are not just tools for preventing infections—they’re pillars of global health, and they offer individual and societal benefits that extend far beyond their original purpose. They save lives, reduce suffering, and build resilience against both current and future health challenges.” The UAE has one of the region’s strongest national immunization

programs, consistently reporting high childhood vaccination coverage through WHO-UNICEF monitoring. In a country that serves as a global aviation and business hub, maintaining high vaccination rates is essential to preventing imported infections and protecting vulnerable populations. So, who needs vaccines? Who should avoid certain vaccines? How do they work? And what should every family know?

How Vaccines Work? Vaccines teach your immune system to prepare for combat, even before your are exposed to a certain pathogen. Think of a vaccine as a rehearsal before the real performance. Rather than exposing the body to a dangerous disease, vaccines introduce a harmless or weaker version or a small component of a virus or bacterium. The immune system responds by producing antibodies and building long-term memory. When the actual infection appears months or years later, the body recognizes it immediately and fights it before serious illness develops. This preventive approach has transformed modern medicine, dramatically reducing hospitalizations, disability and deaths. In modern times, we now have a synthetic version the mRNA vaccines. As in the case of most COVID-19 vaccines, the mRNA vaccine is a type of shot that teaches your body how to make a harmless protein from a virus, triggering an immune response without using a live germ. In both types, the goal is preventive health response that prepares the body to deal with the threat when it appears.

US physician William Foege said, “Vaccines are the tugboats of preventive health.” In other words, vaccination prepares the immune system long before exposure occurs. It is one of the few medical interventions that protects both individuals and entire communities. In childhood every child is vaccinated for polio, Measles, Mumps Rubella (MMR), Diptheria, RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), Tuberculosis. With regular booster shots, it helps the child transition to adulthood with a strong constitution. However, our vaccine journey does not end with childhood. Immunity against certain diseases gradually weakens and vaccines undergo evolution requiring adults to take new jabs with the passage of time, especially when travelling to new places.

Adults may require protection against with vaccines for: Seasonal influenza COVID-19 (where recommended) Tetanus boosters Pneumococcal disease Hepatitis A and B Vaccine to protect against the Herpes zoster virus that can cause chicken pox, Herpes and Shingles Human Papillomavirus (HPV) for Cervical Cancer and protection against genital warts and certain throat cancers

As life expectancy increases and more people live with co-morbidites such as diabetes, heart disease and other chronic conditions, adult vaccination is becoming an increasingly important part of preventive healthcare.

The herd immunity factor Vaccination protects those who cannot protect themselves. One vaccinated person creates a ripple effect. When a sufficiently large proportion of the community is vaccinated, the risk of an epidemic or pandemic drops down as the virus is weakened. The diseases struggle to spread underscoring a concept known as herd or community immunity. This protection becomes critical for: newborn babies people receiving chemotherapy organ transplant recipients individuals with weakened immune systems elderly people with multiple health conditions Maintaining high vaccination

coverage is particularly important in internationally connected countries like the UAE, where millions of travelers pass through every year. All leading hospitals in the UAE, have vaccination clinics during summers as people who are travelling to foreign locations or returning from them, require vaccinations. Vaccination isn’t simply a personal choice. It is a community responsibility because it protects those who are medically unable to receive certain vaccines.

Timing is everything Vaccines are carefully scheduled. Infants receive vaccines at specific ages because maternal antibodies begin to fade while their own immune systems are still

for everyone.

earliest months.

Extra medical advice is required for:

Travel may change your vaccination needs

Individuals with severely weakened immune systems People undergoing chemotherapy Organ transplant recipients taking certain immunosuppressive medications Individuals with a history of severe allergic reactions to vaccine ingredients Certain pregnant women Ironically, many chronic illnesses make vaccination more important, not less, because infections can lead to far more serious complications.

The vaccine fall-out

developing. Delaying vaccines unnecessarily leaves children exposed during their most vulnerable months. Equally important are booster doses, which refresh immune memory and ensure protection remains strong throughout life. If someone misses a vaccine, doctors can usually recommend a catch-up schedule without restarting the entire series.

Who should and shouldn’t receive vaccines Most people can safely receive recommended vaccines. However, some vaccines, particularly live attenuated vaccines, may not be appropriate

Mild side effects after vaccination, are a sign the immune system is working A sore arm, mild fever, and fatigue are among the most common reactions after vaccination. Rather than indicating illness, these symptoms reflect the body’s immune response building protection. Serious adverse reactions remain extremely rare and are carefully monitored through national vaccine safety systems.

Pregnancy requires a personalized vaccination plan Vaccination during pregnancy protects two lives. Certain vaccines are recommended because they safeguard both mother and baby, while others should ideally be administered before conception. Women planning pregnancy should review their vaccination history well in advance. Similarly, newborn babies begin receiving vaccines according to carefully designed schedules that provide protection during their

Today’s travelers can cross continents in hours, and so can infectious diseases. Travelers may require vaccines depending on their destination and duration of stay. Check the updated list of vaccines depending on the country you are visiting. Some countries also require official vaccination certificates before entry. Travel medicine consultations are ideally scheduled four to six weeks before departure.

Vaccine Myths While vaccine science has advanced dramatically, misinformation has spread even faster. Health authorities warn that declining vaccine confidence has contributed to the resurgence of diseases previously under control. Measles illustrates the challenge. Because it is among the world’s most contagious diseases, even small declines in vaccination coverage can trigger outbreaks. Globally, 84% of children received their first measles vaccine dose in 2025, still well below the 95% coverage considered necessary to interrupt transmission. Recent outbreaks in several countries demonstrate how quickly immunity gaps can reopen the door to diseases once thought defeated. Virologists across the world debunk the myth that earlier held the Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccine responsible for triggering autism in some children. An earlier study on this was found to have fabricated this fact. Typically, the MMR vaccine is administered to children in two

Aug/Sep 2026

11

doses at 12 months and 15 months. It is also the age where the child is likely to display symptoms of Autism the first time. Therefore, the misconception that MMR triggered autism. In a study conducted in over 95,000 children who had taken the MMR vaccine, not evidence was found to co-relate the vaccine to autism. “The greatest threat today isn’t vaccine science but misinformation. Patients should feel comfortable discussing concerns with qualified healthcare professionals rather than relying on unverified social media posts,” explained the head of a vaccination clinic in Dubai.

Keep your vaccination record updated Most people know where their passport is. Far fewer know where their vaccination record is. Keeping an updated immunization record helps healthcare providers determine whether boosters are required and avoid unnecessary repeat vaccinations.

It also simplifies: school admissions university enrolment employment medicals overseas travel immigration requirements Digital health records have made access easier than ever, but maintaining a personal copy remains a wise habit. The message is simple: few interventions deliver greater returns than a vaccine given at the right time.

Back-to-School

Strike the right balance between studies, sports and extra curriculars Why parents must perfect the art of providing stimulation to their child that balances the intellectual, mental and physical in everyday routine!

Raising a child is like an exquisite choreography exercise for modern parents. There are school assignments and examinations to navigate, sports practices to attend, music lessons to schedule, hobbies to nurture. Amidst all this is the equally important task of preserving childhood itself. The pressure to create “wellrounded” children has never been greater. Yet, behind the full calendars and after-school activities lies a quieter, more thoughtful movement among parents: a growing recognition that success is not about doing everything but about helping children discover what matters most to them. For Trupti Gokhale, a professor at BITS Pilani Dubai, and mother of international cricketer Aug/Sep 2026

14

Siya Gokhale, the hierarchy of priorities is clear.

“My child’s mental health and happiness are my biggest priorities,” she says. “Her career path, ambition and passion should form the core, around which academics, followed by sports and other extracurricular activities will revolve.”

It’s a philosophy born not merely from theory but from lived experience. Her daughter, now

in university, continues pursuing her cricketing journey as an international medium-pacer allrounder, even while balancing the demanding worlds of elite sport and academics. Similarly, for Pyarilal TK, father of Grade 6 student Ankit Lal, the objective has never been to produce a child who excels at everything. “My wife Amritha and I strongly feel that extracurricular activities are very important in a child’s upbringing. It helps stay healthy, calm, develop interpersonal skills and a hobby moving forward,” says Pyarilal, who heads a maritime services firm in Dubai. Ankit plays football twice a week, attends drum classes, enjoys painting and pursues a deep

interest in science through books and documentaries. But the emphasis, they insist, remains on enjoyment rather than achievement. If today’s children seem busier than ever, it’s because they are growing up in a world of unprecedented opportunities not to mention unprecedented expectations. “Today’s age offers a much wider scope of career opportunities than previous generations,” says Trupti. “This creates a larger demand for holistic development of children.” Technology has transformed access to information, but it has also intensified comparison and competition. Children today witness teenage entrepreneurs, young athletes, social media influencers and prodigies across multiple disciplines, creating an environment where success can appear not only attainable, but expected. Pyarilal sees a stark contrast with his own childhood. “In my generation, there was no

comparable push to perform on so many fronts simultaneously,” he reflects. “Most of our development was self-driven.” Rather than imposing their own ambitions, he and Amritha have chosen to expose Ankit to a variety of experiences and allow him to discover his own interests. “Children should not be pressured into pursuing a field simply because their parents favour it,” he says.

LEARNING TO SAY NO Perhaps one of the greatest parenting challenges today is deciding not what children should do, but what they shouldn’t. For Trupti, the value of an activity lies not in its popularity but in its long-term impact. Physical activities, she believes, contribute significantly to both physical and mental wellbeing, while intellectual pursuits nurture curiosity and resilience. The challenge becomes more acute when children themselves begin to signal that enough is enough.

Pyarilal recalls a moment that fundamentally changed his family’s approach. After initially enrolling Ankit in several activities, they realised that the schedule itself was becoming a source of stress.

The family subsequently reduced his commitments, retaining only those activities he genuinely enjoyed. The decision, Pyarilal believes, created space for something equally important: independence, imagination and selfdiscovery. Today, Ankit spends some of his free time conducting simple science experiments, reading books, or building elaborate creations using cardboard and Lego. For parents, one of the most difficult skills to develop may be learning to recognise the subtle signs of burnout. Trupti remembers a particularly challenging phase during Siya’s final years of school. Juggling board examinations with international cricket commitments, her daughter found herself trapped in an exhausting cycle of school, training sessions and late-night study sessions. “She was stressed, very quiet at home, fatigued and had irregular sleeping habits,” Trupti recalls. The family’s response was not to demand greater discipline or better time management, but to create emotional safety. Home became a place for light conversation, laughter and reassurance; a refuge rather than another arena for performance.

Aug/Sep 2026

15

When Academics and Passion Collide For the Gokhale family, this conflict became a recurring reality as Siya’s international cricket tournaments frequently overlapped with school examinations. Academics, Trupti says, always remained non-negotiable. Fortunately, innovative educational frameworks provided some flexibility. Through the KHDA’s Rahal programme and support from her school, Siya was able to take examinations ahead of schedule before representing the UAE internationally.

Pyarilal’s family follows a similar principle. “Academics take priority,” he says simply. “If there is a clash, we reschedule the extracurricular activities.”

Let your child’s creativity soar For Siya, competitive sport has nurtured discipline, teamwork, resilience under pressure and the ability to multitask effectively. It has also instilled habits that extend far beyond the cricket field. For Ankit, sports have taught something equally important: how to lose. These lessons—resilience, empathy, teamwork and emotional intelligence—are increasingly recognised by educators and employers alike as essential life skills. In an era where achievement is often publicly quantified and constantly displayed, parents are quietly redefining what success means. “A happy childhood filled with memories and learnings is very important,” says Trupti. Pyarilal echoes the sentiment.

Dr Muhammad Tahir, director, chairman of the American Wellness centre, an American Boardcertified psychiatrist specializing in neurology, child, adolescent and adult psychiatry in conversation with HEALTH, feels it is important for school children to participate in activities that extend beyond the classroom and strict academic rigour. “A child’s brain was never meant to develop through academics alone. In my experience, I have seen this balance playing its role. Research has shown strong evidence that physical activity supports the whole developing body; it improves blood circulation, oxygen delivery to the brain, muscle strength, metabolism, sleep quality and hormonal balance. It is scientifically proven that physical activity and exercise also stimulate

neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin and endorphins, which influence attention, motivation, mood and emotional regulation. When children are given time for sports, play, arts and extra-curricular interests, they build resilience, confidence, social connection, and healthier coping skills, A balanced approach supports academic success while opening wider horizons helping children discover who they truly are by exploring wider life options, and recognizing their potential to face life’s challenges with strength and more awareness as adults in the future. It’s a full circle approach in my understanding.” For parents in the UAE, where educational opportunities and extracurricular options abound, striking the right balance is particularly challenging. Creating a Mowj (wave)of success

insurance systems and, most importantly, the patient’s mindset, and you need to do this virtually.” Those early years in telemedicine proved transformative. After training in Switzerland as part of a UAE-Swiss collaboration, Dr. Sameera quickly realised that innovation could never simply be imported.

Dr Sameera Al Obeidli, Associate Vice President, NMC Healthcare How Dr Sameera Al Obeidli, Associate Vice President, NMC Healthcare is redefining healthcare leadership by putting people, purpose and possibility at the heart of innovation For Dr Obeidli, Associate Vice President, NMC Healthcare, leadership has never been about occupying a position of authority. It has been about creating systems that leave no one behind. Over a career spanning more than 25 years, the Emirati physician has seamlessly moved from pathology and family medicine to becoming one of the UAE’s pioneers in telemedicine, before stepping into strategic healthcare leadership at NMC Healthcare. Each transition, she says, has been guided by one principle: understanding people first. “As a family physician, I could provide care for children, adults, older people and pregnant women. That gave me confidence to lead telemedicine although there is a challenge in that you don’t see the patient physically. You have to understand regulations, cultures,

“You couldn’t copypaste the Swiss model into the UAE,” she says. “The regulations, cultural sensitivities and even the way we respond to emergencies are different. We had to adapt everything to suit our environment.”

That ability to localise global best practices would later become one of her defining strengths. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she helped lead large-scale telemedicine operations, supporting initiatives that enabled thousands of patients to receive medical care remotely. Today, however, her focus has shifted to what she believes could become one of the country’s most significant healthcare transformations. As Vice President overseeing People of Determination (POD) services at NMC Healthcare, she spearheaded Mowj - Arabic for “wave” - an ambitious multidisciplinary

programme designed to identify developmental delays in children aged between zero and eight years and intervene early, under the guidance of Zayed Authority for people of determination and National academy of childhood development. “What we do is detect delays as early as possible,” she explains. “Healthcare, education and social care work together instead of in silos. If we can identify children between zero and four years, we can prepare many of them to enter mainstream schools and become more independent.” The project is also deeply personal. Dr. Sameera is the mother of four children, one of whom has Down Syndrome. “Because of my child’s experience, I wish that all neurodiverse children can also be enabled to reach their full potential.” Her leadership philosophy reflects the same human-centred approach. “Two things are very important if you want people to be motivated - trust, and a sense of belonging,” she says. “People also need to feel valued. As a leader, you must be ethical, deliver on your promises and connect individual goals with organisational goals.” Education has equally shaped her worldview. Raised in an Emirati family that encouraged curiosity, she studied first at a convent school, then in an Indian CBSE school before pursuing medicine in Romania. Today, she speaks six languages and credits her parents’ unwavering emphasis on learning for her success. “My mother always told me, ‘Just have a book with you wherever you go. Whatever book, it doesn’t matter. Just read.’”

Inspirational Message to other UAE women As the UAE celebrates Emirati Women’s Day, Dr. Al Obeidli believes the next generation of women leaders must embrace mentorship as intentionally as they pursue ambition. “They have to choose the right mentor, and trust that mentor. Mentorship provides concentrated experience. It helps people grow faster.” She adds, “Women need to support women more. That’s where we are still lagging behind.”

In the UAE, women are trusted to lead gave me the opportunity to move beyond clinical medicine and influence organisational culture, leadership and workforce wellbeing on a strategic level.

Dr. Leila Kazim, Workforce Wellbeing Leader and Preventive & Lifestyle Medicine Strategist “The journey of Emirati women is one of the UAE’s greatest success stories. In just a few decades, we’ve gone from opening doors to helping shape the nation’s future without compromising our identity, culture or values. As both a physician and wellbeing strategist, I’ve experienced that transformation firsthand. The UAE

What resonates with me most is that women here aren’t simply encouraged to succeed; we’re trusted to lead. That trust inspires me every day to contribute to building healthier, happier and more resilient communities.

Being a Caregiver, Leader & Mother I’ve learned that balance isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about knowing where you’re needed most in each moment. As a mother of seven children, a physician and a wellbeing leader, people often ask how I manage it all. The truth is: I don’t do it alone. My husband, parents, siblings, extended family and friends have been my greatest support system. Their

encouragement has allowed me to pursue my purpose while staying grounded in what matters most. Working in wellbeing has also taught me that those who care for others often forget to care for themselves. Self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a responsibility. We cannot pour from an empty cup. As we celebrate the importance of family this year, it’s a reminder that strong families don’t just build resilient people - they build resilient communities.

On Leadership I believe Emirati women are helping redefine leadership by showing that strength and compassion belong together. The best leaders create environments where people feel psychologically safe to speak up, contribute and thrive. Through my work, I’ve seen that

Women help build stronger communities

Hassa Alsuwaidi, Community Manager at TECOM Group

when people feel heard and valued, they become more resilient, innovative and engaged. That’s why I believe empathy isn’t a soft skill but one of the most important leadership skills of the future.

My Mentors My greatest mTo entors have been my family. My father’s unwavering belief in me and my mother’s constant support gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities I might never have imagined. I’ve also learned that the best mentors help you discover your own answers. Some challenged me, questioned me and pushed me outside my comfort zone, and I’m grateful they did.

Lessons from Wellbeing I’ve learned that prevention will always outperform intervention. Investing in people’s wellbeing early creates healthier employees,

stronger teams and better business outcomes. Ultimately, leadership is about service. Titles may create authority, but trust is what creates lasting influence.

Inspirational message to Other UAE women What makes the Emirati experience unique is that women’s advancement has never been accidental; it has been a national priority driven by visionary leadership. The UAE has shown the world that women can lead while remaining true to their culture, values and families. Looking ahead, I believe our greatest investment should be in mentoring and creating opportunities for the next generation to lead early, confidently and authentically.”

“I feel very fortunate to be an Emirati woman. We have visionary leaders who believed in women’s potential from the beginning and created opportunities for us to grow, contribute, and lead. What inspires me most is seeing Emirati women confidently embracing change while staying true to our values. We work hard to develop ourselves, support our families, and ontribute alongside people from different cultures and alongside men, all with one shared goal to serve and elevate our country together.

Defining Moments At every stage of my career, I chose someone to learn from. I always had one main role model and another with a different leadership style. This helped me stay open minded and reminded me that there is never only one way to succeed. Every new journey became an opportunity to learn, adapt, and grow.

Overcoming challenges One of my biggest challenges was my own self confidence. There was a time when I doubted myself, and moving forward felt very difficult. I eventually

realized that before changing my actions, I had to let go of the fear holding me back. Every person faces struggles, and sometimes the biggest obstacle is within us. Growth begins when we accept those feelings, then choose to move forward one step at a time.

On Leadership and mentors Technology can help us work faster and smarter, but it cannot replace genuine human connection. Empathy, emotional intelligence, and collaboration are what build trust, strengthen relationships, and inspire people. For me, technology is a tool, but people will always be at the heart of great leadership. I’ve been fortunate to learn from many managers, colleagues, and people I’ve met throughout my career. Each of them taught me something different. In return, I try to support others by sharing what I’ve learned, encouraging them, and always making time to listen. Sometimes, even a simple conversation can make a real difference.

Inspirational message to other UAE women To young women, I say, stay open minded and keep learning because the world is always changing. At the same time, stay grounded in your values and never lose sight of who you are. The better you understand yourself, the more confidently you can grow, adapt, and make a positive impact on the people around you. What makes the UAE special is that women are encouraged to contribute based on their abilities. We are given opportunities, trusted with responsibility, and supported to grow across many sectors. I believe the biggest lesson is that when women are empowered with

trust and equal opportunities, they don’t just succeed individually they help build stronger communities and a stronger nation.”

Contemporary design and cultural identity can beautifully co-exist together

Noor Al Muhaideb, Founding Partner – Opaal Interiors “My career journey began with a genuine fascination for how spaces shape the way people live. Studying Interior Design at the American University of Sharjah gave me a strong foundation, and my years at Emaar taught me that design is never only about aesthetics. The spaces we create influence how people feel, connect, and experience everyday life. When I founded Opaal Interiors, my goal wasn’t simply to build a business. I wanted to create thoughtful spaces that reflect the UAE’s ambition while preserving the warmth, hospitality, and cultural values that define our country. Every project starts with understanding the people we’re designing because I believe great design should always improve the way people live. The UAE has given me education,

opportunities, and confidence to build my career, and I feel incredibly grateful for that. If, through my work, I’ve helped create homes, workplaces, and hospitality spaces that positively impact people’s lives and reflect the quality and vision of this country, then I feel I’ve contributed, in my own small way, to the UAE’s story. Working in the UAE has shown me that contemporary design and cultural identity can exist beautifully together. The goal is never to make tradition a feature; it’s to let it naturally shape spaces that feel timeless, meaningful, and personal.

On changes in design I’ve been fortunate to witness an incredible transformation. When I began my career, there were fewer Emirati women leading design firms or creative businesses. Today, we see women confidently building companies, leading projects, and helping shape the future of many industries. This progress reflects the UAE’s longterm investment in education, entrepreneurship, and female leadership. Young Emirati women today are ambitious, globally aware, and confident in their abilities while remaining connected to their identity and values. It is inspiring to see them creating opportunities not

only for themselves, but also for those who will follow. I’ve always believed that success means more when you help others grow alongside you. At Opaal, we encourage young designers to contribute ideas, take ownership of projects, and continue learning with confidence. I still remember the value of the mentors who guided me early in my career, and I hope to offer that same encouragement to others. If we can create opportunities for young talent to grow and believe in themselves, then we’ve contributed something meaningful beyond our projects.

Inspirational message to other UAE women Be patient with yourself. Confidence doesn’t appear overnight. It grows through learning, working hard, making mistakes, and continuing despite them. Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s success. Focus on building your skills, stay curious, work with integrity, and trust the process. Every challenge teaches you something, and every experience helps shape the person and leader you become.

Thoughts on Emirati Women’s Day I hope every young Emirati girl knows that she doesn’t have to have everything figured out before she begins. We are incredibly fortunate to live in a country that believes in empowering women and creating opportunities that previous generations could only dream of. Those opportunities came through the vision of our leadership and the efforts of those who came before us, and we should value them by making the most of them. H

A bi-annual column offering the latest insights into the cutting-edge in gynecology and women’s health by an expert in women’s reproductive health

Borrowed Biology:

What Xenotransplantation Means for Women’s Health and Fertility

Dr. Nahla Kazim

Consultant Reproductive Medicine and Infertility Founder, CEO of Kazim's Fertility Barza.

Doctors have a new word making headlines this year: xenotransplantation. It sounds complicated, but the idea is simple. “Xeno” means “foreign,” so xenotransplantation means moving an organ or tissue from one species into another; usually from an animal, most often a pig, into a human. A related idea, the “manufactured organ,” uses stem cells and 3D printing to build a replacement organ in a lab instead. Both approaches share one goal: solving the world’s chronic shortage of organs for transplant.

Aug/Sep 2026

24

This is not science fiction anymore. In February 2025, the Food and Drug Administration, FDA, approved the first formal clinical trials of geneedited pig kidneys in living patients, run by United Therapeutics and the biotechnology company, eGenesis, whose pigs carry dozens of gene edits that add helpful human genes and switch off genes that trigger rejection. By late 2025, real patients, including Bill Stewart, freed from years of dialysis, were living normally with a pig kidney doing the work of their own, and NYU Langone Health launched its own trial that November.

years: fish-skin grafts for burns. Often called “salmon skin” in popular reports, the FDA-cleared product is processed from North Atlantic cod, whose skin shares a collagen structure remarkably similar to ours. Surgeons lay it over a cleaned burn wound, where it acts as scaffolding; reducing pain and infection while the patient’s own cells gradually grow through it and replace it entirely. Studies show faster healing and less pain than standard dressings; similar grafts from Nile tilapia are used in Brazilian burn units. This track record shows xenotransplantation can be safe long before it reaches whole organs.

Fish skin-grafts to artificial ovaries, the new frontier

Why this matters to women’s health? Because the same science of gene editing, tissue engineering, and growing biological structures outside the body, is moving toward reproductive

A gentler form of xenotransplantation has been mainstream medicine for

organs too. Researchers already build “artificial ovary” scaffolds: stripped of original cells, then reseeded with a patient’s own eggs and supporting cells to restore hormone production and fertility after cancer treatment or ovarian failure. Similar work is underway on engineered uterine tissue, growing a patient’s own cells onto a supportive matrix to repair a damaged womb. None of this is routine yet, the direction is clear: today’s organ and skin xenografts could, within a decade, extend to ovaries, testes, and the uterus. This excitement needs a note of caution, because gonadal tissue differs from every other organ. A kidney filters blood; a gonad carries genetic instructions for the next generation. If

a future ovary or testis were rebuilt using donor cells, animal scaffolding, or lab-grown components, a child born from it would inherit something from that source. This is why unanimously we call for lineage protection: safeguards ensuring genetic identity, consent, and family history stay clear, no matter how advanced the technology becomes. Practically, this means genetic testing to confirm whose DNA is present in reconstructed tissue, permanent records of materials used, confirmation that any scaffold is non-living and carries no genetic material, and thorough counselling on implications for future children. None of this exists in finished form yet, which is why professionals like us need to help write it now.

Xenotransplantation, an exciting new frontier The merits are real: fewer patients waiting for donor organs, new options for cancer survivors who lost fertility, and hope for those born without functioning reproductive organs. The perils are equally real: infection risks from animal tissue, unknown long-term effects, unequal access if the technology is expensive, and the ethical weight of altering how a child’s genetic story begins. Balancing these requires input from transplant surgeons, oncologists, geneticists, ethicists, and religious scholars together; not one specialty working alone. The UAE is positioning itself to lead this conversation responsibly: amendments issued on December 10, 2025, expanded its organ donation law to formally define and permit non-human organs, animal-derived or lab-manufactured, under strict medical licensing. In 2026, the UAE Legislation Platform opened a public consultation inviting doctors, patients, and citizens to help shape the safety standards, ethical safeguards, and implementation rules before this framework is finalised; a rare and welcome sequencing. The UAE’s approach here is worth appreciating on its own terms. Rather than legislating first and adjusting later, regulators are explicitly inviting technical, ethical, and public input on the benefits, risks, safety standards, and implementation challenges of this field before the rules are locked in. As this field grows, the UAE through open dialogues, is expected to shape future directives to address reproductive tissues too, and clinicians in Reproductive Medicine and fertility care should be ready to contribute that expertise before the rules are set. Insurance

They’ve got you covered! Hitesh Motwani, Deputy CEO of Insurancemarkets.ae elaborates on why it’s essential for everyone planning a holiday to have decent travel insurance that covers health emergencies too

Q Is it recommended that every person going on holiday should have reasonable health cover and purchase travel insurance that provides it? Absolutely. Travel insurance should be considered an essential part of every trip, regardless of the destination or duration. Many people spend significant time planning flights and accommodation but overlook the financial impact of a medical emergency abroad. Even a short hospital visit in some countries can cost thousands of dollars, while emergency surgeries or medical evacuations can be substantially more expensive.

Aug/Sep 2026

26

A good travel insurance policy provides peace of mind by protecting travellers against unexpected medical expenses and other travel-related disruptions.

Q What are the benefits of this? Travel insurance provides much more than emergency medical cover. Depending on the policy, benefits can include: Emergency medical treatment and hospitalisation. Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation. Trip cancellation or curtailment. Flight delays and missed connections. Lost, delayed or damaged baggage.

Loss of passport and travel documents. Personal liability while travelling. 24-hour worldwide emergency assistance. The medical component remains the most valuable benefit because healthcare costs can vary significantly across different countries, and an emergency can quickly become financially overwhelming without adequate protection.

Q What are the important points to consider while choosing a travel insurance? Travellers should avoid choosing a

policy based solely on price. Instead, they should ensure the cover matches both their destination and the nature of their trip. Some key considerations include: Adequate emergency medical coverage limits. Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation benefits. Coverage for trip cancellation and travel delays. Baggage and personal belongings protection. Any exclusions relating to adventure or winter sports, if applicable The policy excess or deductible. Access to a 24-hour emergency assistance service. A clear understanding of the policy’s exclusions before travelling.

Q Is there a guide based on the traveller’s destination? There is no single insurer that is best for a particular destination. Instead, travellers should ensure their policy meets both the healthcare costs and any regulatory requirements of the country they are visiting.

Schengen countries (most of Europe): Travellers applying for a Schengen visa are generally required to have travel insurance with a minimum medical coverage of EUR 30,000, valid across all Schengen countries and including emergency medical treatment and repatriation. While this satisfies the visa requirement, many travellers choose higher limits for greater protection. United States: Healthcare costs are among the highest globally. A

comprehensive policy with high medical limits, ideally at least USD 500,000 and preferably USD 1 million or more, together with emergency evacuation and repatriation cover, is recommended. Canada: Like the United States, visitors can face significant medical expenses. A policy with high medical limits and emergency assistance benefits is advisable. Australia and New Zealand: Medical care for visitors can also be expensive. Comprehensive medical cover, emergency assistance and trip interruption

benefits are recommended. Southeast Asia: Although treatment costs are generally lower than in North America or Europe, travellers should still choose adequate medical coverage, particularly if travelling to islands or remote locations where emergency evacuation may be required.

Q When the cover is used, how does one proceed to file a claim after the incident? The first step is to contact your broker or insurer who can guide customers through the claims

Aug/Sep 2026

27

process, liaise with the insurer and explain the next steps. At InsuranceMarket.ae, for example, we support our customers throughout the claims journey to make the experience as smooth as possible.

Q What happens when a person with a pre-existing condition like Type II diabetes or a cardiac condition suffers a medical emergency abroad?

Travellers should also keep a copy of their policy certificate and emergency assistance details, as these contain the insurer’s 24-hour emergency contact numbers and claims procedures.

In most cases, no. Standard travel insurance policies generally exclude pre-existing medical conditions. If a medical emergency arises directly or indirectly because of an existing illness, the claim would typically not be covered.

For larger medical emergencies requiring hospitalisation, many travel insurance policies provide direct billing, subject to policy terms and insurer approval. This allows eligible hospital expenses to be settled directly between the insurer and the hospital, reducing the need for travellers to make substantial upfront payments. If reimbursement is required, travellers should retain: Medical reports and doctor’s notes. Hospital discharge summaries. Itemised hospital invoices. Pharmacy receipts where applicable. Payment receipts. Boarding passes or travel documents if the claim relates to travel disruption. Keeping digital copies of all documents is also recommended.

Aug/Sep 2026

28

For example, if someone has a known cardiac condition and suffers a heart attack while travelling, or complications arise from pre-existing diabetes, these will generally fall within the policy’s pre-existing condition exclusion. Travellers with existing medical conditions should therefore carefully review the policy wording before purchasing the travel insurance.

Will travel insurance cover emergencies induced by long travel, such as Deep Vein Thrombosis or Bell’s Palsy? Coverage depends on the policy wording and the medical circumstances. If a condition develops unexpectedly during the trip and is considered an acute medical emergency that is not linked to a pre-existing medical condition, many comprehensive travel insurance policies may provide cover, subject to the policy terms, conditions and exclusions.

Any tips on choosing a wellbalanced travel insurance? My advice is simple: Don’t choose travel insurance based solely on price. Purchase your policy as soon as your trip is confirmed. Read the policy wording

carefully, particularly the exclusions. Choose medical coverage that is appropriate for your destination, especially when travelling to countries with high healthcare costs. Ensure emergency medical evacuation and repatriation are included. Save the insurer’s 24-hour emergency assistance number on your phone before you travel. Keep both digital and printed copies of your policy while abroad. Understand the policy’s limitations before you travel. A travel insurance is designed to protect against unexpected events during your journey. Understanding both what your policy covers and what it excludes helps travellers avoid surprises. H

Eye Health

A Parent’s Guide to

Children’s Vision in the Digital Age Dr. Rizwana Hussaindeen, Program Director & Associate Professor of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Gulf Medical University, provides insights into protecting children’s eyesight

Walk into any classroom today and you will spot more glasses than a decade ago. Children’s eyesight is under growing pressure, and the numbers tell the story. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, globally, myopia (near-sightedness) already affects around 30 per cent of people, and researchers project that by 2050 nearly half the world’s population will be short-sighted.

Aug/Sep 2026

30

Myopia usually begins in schoolage children and tends to worsen through the teenage years. Studies carried out in the UAE reflects this trend. Studies of schoolchildren across the Emirates have reported myopia rates from about 12 per cent in some regions to higher figures elsewhere, and clinicians here note that progression among children is speeding up. Much of it is lifestyledriven: long hours focused on screens and books up close, and less time outdoors under natural light. Focusing on near

objects for extended periods strains the eye’s focusing system and can gradually change the shape of the eyeball [2].

The encouraging news is that small, consistent habits at home make a real difference. Here are the ones that matter most.

Get them Outside. The evidence here is strong: spending two hours or more outdoors each day has been shown to be protective against the onset of myopia (short-sightedness) [4]. Natural daylight, not the activity itself, appears to be the key. Aim for at least two hours of outdoor time every day, not just on weekends.

Follow the 20-20-20 Rule Every 20 minutes of screen or close work, have your child look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It relaxes the focusing muscles and eases digital eye strain, which can cause blurring, dryness and headaches.

Set Screen Boundaries. Keep devices 18 to 24 inches from the eyes, build in regular breaks, and protect sleep by switching screens off well before bedtime. Balance screen time with reading, play and physical activity.

Nourish the Eyes A balanced diet supports healthy vision. Leafy greens, colourful fruits rich in vitamins A, C and E, eggs, nuts and omega-3-rich fish all contribute to eye health.

Watch for warning signs. Squinting, sitting very close to the television, holding books near the face, frequent eye rubbing, head tilting or complaints of headaches can all signal a vision problem worth checking.

Book regular eye exams. A yearly comprehensive eye exam catches problems early, when they are easiest to manage. Crucially, myopia is no longer something we simply correct with stronger glasses each year. Myopia-specific control options

can slow its progression, which lowers the lifetime risk of more serious conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma and early cataract. These include myopiacontrol optical modalities such as specially designed spectacles or contact lenses, orthokeratology (ortho-K) lenses that gently reshape the cornea overnight, and low-dose atropine eye drops. An optometrist or ophthalmologist can advise which approach suits your child.

Why act early? Slowing down myopia even slightly pays off for a lifetime. Every small reduction in progression means clearer, healthier eyes and a lower risk of vision problems in adulthood. Our children are growing up in the most screen-saturated environment in history. We cannot switch that off entirely, but with more daylight, sensible screen habits, good nutrition and regular eye checks, we can give their eyes the best possible chance to thrive.

Regenerative Medicine

Understanding the

BODY CIRCUIT Govind Das, founder of the Frequency Lab Global and Alchemy Light, demonstrates the process. A former corporate professional turned Reiki master, meditation teacher and breathwork specialist, Das focuses on regenerating the body

Consider a woman in her late forties. She eats well, takes her supplements, and walks most mornings. By every measure, she does everything right. Yet lately her body has been sending strange messages: nights that refuse to hold sleep, aches that wander with no clear cause, a vitality that has quietly dimmed. Her medical assessments reveal nothing that explains the symptoms. And still, something is off. She is probably perimenopausal, another growing public health concern among women in their late forties. As estrogen fluctuates through midlife, the body’s inflammatory tone rises. Researchers increasingly connect this shift, and the slow background inflammation now nicknamed “inflammaging,” to exactly her cluster of complaints: broken sleep, low mood, joint aches, thinning energy. It is a low-grade, whole-body inflammation that no single conventional prescription is designed to simply switch off. So, what do you do when everything is “fine” and nothing feels right? You stop hunting for a broken part — and start looking at the circuit.

The Body Is a Circuit At The Frequency Lab Global in Dubai, the founding idea fits into

Aug/Sep 2026

The Lucia N°03 light experience at The Frequency Lab, Dubai. a single line: the body is electrical, the mind is magnetic, and the soul is light. It sounds like poetry until you remember it is also physiology. Every heartbeat is a voltage. Every nerve fires an electrical signal. Every cell holds a charge across its membrane — and when that charge drops, fatigue, inflammation and dis-ease quietly move in.

“Health isn’t something you add. It’s a current you restore.” Seen this way, wellbeing is less

about chasing symptoms and more about reconnecting a circuit: grounding it, charging it, and clearing the static that modern life leaves behind. Once you look at the body as a system of energy rather than a checklist of complaints, the whole idea of healing changes shape.

Walking the Circuit And that is what you receive at the Frequency Lab. Step inside, and the protocol reveals itself as stages, each one suited to a particular kind of person.

Lucia N°03 (Hypnagogic Light) — a flickering light experience that guides the brain into deep, meditative states — the nervous system’s reset switch. Who benefits anyone wrestling with insomnia, anxiety, chronic stress or burnout, and those chasing deeper meditation, sharper focus, or relief from a restless, overactive mind. Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Mat — pulsed electromagnetic frequencies that recharge cells the way a battery draws a current. Who benefits people living with chronic pain, stiff or aching joints, low energy and sluggish recovery, disturbed sleep or poor circulation, and athletes who want to repair faster. Red Light & Infrared Therapy - Photo biomodulation System — targeted wavelengths that reach the mitochondria, the tiny engines deciding how much energy you have. Who benefits: those focused on skin health and visible ageing, slow-healing skin, sore joints and muscles, and anyone running on a low cellular battery. Molecular Hydrogen (Inhalation) — an inhaled antioxidant that calms the inflammation dimming your energy. Who benefits people carrying chronic inflammation or oxidative stress, brain fog, or metabolic imbalance, and anyone looking to support recovery, mental clarity and healthy ageing. Andullation Therapy — mechanical vibration married to deep infrared heat, releasing what the body has been gripping. Who benefits: anyone with back, neck or spinal tension, musculoskeletal or chronic pain, stiffness and fatigue, or poor circulation. Compression Boots — dynamic,

multi-chamber compression that moves circulation from the ground up. Who benefits athletes and active people, those with heavy, tired or swollen legs, sluggish lymphatic flow, and frequent long-haul travellers. E-Stim Wave Mat — gentle electrical muscle stimulation that gives tired tissue one last wake-up. Who benefits: desk-bound professionals with back pain and muscle tension, those with weak or deconditioned muscles, and anyone recovering from a sedentary week.

Coming Back into Tune Return to the woman from the beginning. Weeks into a regular circuit, the changes tend to arrive quietly. Improved sleep, recovered vitality, reduced aches and pains, and beneath it all the reduction in chronic inflammation. There was nothing to be cured — the system is simply helped back toward balance, and the current restored.

Why This Is the Future of Longevity The world’s most interesting longevity science is quietly moving

in the same direction: away from treating disease and toward optimizing the terrain it grows in — the cell, the nervous system, the field of energy that animates both. Frequency medicine sits exactly there. A growing body of research points the same way: pulsed electromagnetic fields and red-light therapy have both been studied for anti-inflammatory and cellularrepair effects, and molecular hydrogen for its antioxidant action. It won’t replace your doctor, as it isn’t a miracle. But for the growing number of people who have done everything “right” and still feel dimmed, it offers a missing dimension — and, increasingly, the language longevity will be written in.

Step Into the Circuit If your well-being has plateaued, consider this your invitation. Visit The Frequency Lab at Heal Hub Rehabilitation Center, Dubai — and decide for yourself what it means to be switched back on.

5 Ways to Turn

Every Step

into Better Health Find out why the slogan “Keep Walking” is a universal denote of great health

Walking may be the world’s most underrated medicine. It requires no expensive equipment, no gym membership and very little instruction. Yet studies consistently show that regular walking can lower the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and depression, while improving sleep, cognition and longevity. But here’s what many people don’t realise: not all walking is the same. Different styles challenge the body and mind in different ways. Some elevate your heart rate, others strengthen muscles, while a few are designed to reduce stress or improve balance and coordination. The best part? You don’t have to choose just one. Mixing different styles throughout the week can make your fitness routine more enjoyable while delivering a broader range of health benefits. Here are five walking styles worth exploring.

Aug/Sep 2026

34

Brisk Walking:

Ideal for

If there’s one walking style that offers the biggest return for the least effort, it’s brisk walking. The goal isn’t to walk as fast as possible but fast enough that your breathing becomes deeper while you’re still able to hold a conversation.

How to do it well

The Everyday Health Booster

Why it works Brisk walking strengthens the heart, improves circulation, burns calories and helps control blood sugar. It also boosts mood by triggering the release of endorphins and reducing stress hormones. Research suggests that just 150 minutes of moderate-intensity walking each week can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Almost everyone - from beginners and busy professionals to older adults looking for a sustainable exercise routine. Walk with your head up, shoulders relaxed and arms swinging naturally. Aim for a pace of about 5-6 km/h or roughly 100-120 steps per minute.

Best time Morning walks can energise your day, while evening walks may help regulate blood sugar after meals. In the summers, mall walkathons work equally well.

Who should be cautious? People with severe heart disease, uncontrolled hypertension or acute

joint injuries should seek medical advice before beginning a vigorous walking programme.

Power Walking: Cardio Without the Impact

Think of power walking as brisk walking with purpose. The pace is faster, the arm movement more deliberate and the workout more demanding.

Unlike jogging, one foot always remains in contact with the ground, making it easier on the joints while still delivering an excellent cardiovascular workout.

Aug/Sep 2026

35

Why it works? Power-walking increases calorie burn; strengthens the lower body and improves cardiovascular fitness without the repetitive impact associated with running. It’s an excellent option for people who want to improve fitness but aren’t ready or able to run.

Ideal for Weight-loss seekers, fitness enthusiasts and adults looking for a higher-intensity workout.

How to do it well Maintain an upright posture, keep your core engaged and bend your elbows at roughly 90 degrees. Drive your arms naturally to help increase speed rather than simply taking longer strides.

Best time Early mornings or cooler evenings.

Who should avoid it? People with significant knee, hip or ankle pain should begin with regular walking before progressing to power walking.

Nordic Walking:

The Full-Body Workout Originally developed as summer training for crosscountry skiers, Nordic walking uses specially designed poles that actively engage the upper body.

It improves posture, balance and endurance, making it particularly valuable for older adults. Because more muscles are working, calorie expenditure is also higher than during ordinary walking.

Ideal for Older adults, people recovering from injury, those with mild arthritis and anyone wanting a full-body workout.

How to do it well Instead of relying solely on the legs, walkers use their arms, shoulders, chest and core to propel themselves forward.

Use properly fitted Nordic walking poles and learn the correct arm-leg coordination. Short instruction sessions can dramatically improve technique.

Why it works

Best time

Nordic walking activates up to 90 per cent of the body’s muscles while reducing stress on the knees and hips.

Aug/Sep 2026

36

Any time of the day or evening; to be done in parks, promenades and long walking tracks provide ideal terrain.

Who should avoid it? People with acute shoulder or wrist injuries should wait until they’ve recovered before using poles extensively.

Hiking and Nature Walking: Exercise for Body & Mind

Sometimes the greatest benefit of walking isn’t speed; it’s scenery. Walking through forests, hills, beaches or nature trails combines physical exercise with the restorative effects of being outdoors. Uneven terrain also challenges muscles that aren’t used during city walking.

A more structured variation gaining popularity is Japanese Interval Walking. It alternates three minutes of fast walking with three minutes of slower walking, repeated several times.

Why it works? Mindful walking lowers stress improves focus and encourages emotional resilience. Japanese Interval Walking combines these psychological benefits with improved cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength and blood pressure control through short bursts of higher intensity.

Ideal for People experiencing stress, office workers, older adults and anyone returning to exercise after a break.

How to do it well

Why it works?

Best time

Hiking builds the strength in our limbs, improves balance and enhances cardiovascular fitness. Spending time in natural environments has also been linked to lower stress levels, improved concentration and better mental wellbeing. For many people, nature walking feels less like exercise and more like recreation.

Cool mornings. Avoid extreme heat, especially during summer.

Ideal for Families, weekend adventurers and anyone looking to escape screen fatigue.

How to do it well Wear supportive footwear, carry water, apply sunscreen and choose trails that match your fitness level. Start with shorter routes before attempting more challenging hikes.

Who should be cautious? People with severe balance problems, uncontrolled asthma or advanced heart disease should choose easier trails and avoid isolated locations

Japanese Interval Walking: Fitness Meets Focus

Walking doesn’t always have to be about distance. Mindful walking encourages paying close attention to breathing, posture, surroundings and the rhythm of each step. The practice transforms a simple walk into a moving form of meditation that reduces anxiety and improves emotional wellbeing.

Leave distractions behind. Walk without constantly checking your phone. Notice your breathing, surroundings and foot placement. For interval walking, use a timer to alternate between faster and slower segments.

Best time Whenever you need a mental reset, after work or before bedtime.

Who should avoid interval walking? People with unstable heart conditions or serious mobility issues should consult a healthcare professional before attempting higher-intensity intervals.

The Best Walking Plan? The key to it is variety. There’s no single “perfect” way to walk. Instead, think of these styles as tools in your health toolbox and can be chosen depending on the section of the body you want to work out. The most effective walking routine isn’t necessarily the fastest or longest. It’s the one you’ll enjoy enough to keep doing. H

now serving over 15,000 customers daily, the kind of operational detail that shows the "access" argument is not just rhetoric. Insights Psychology and Milab Scientific followed the same logic, closing specific gaps in behavioural healthcare and diagnostics rather than simply adding revenue. Q: These acquisitions span retail pharmacy, behavioural healthcare, and diagnostics. What is the strategic value of building an integrated healthcare ecosystem? A: Healthcare is evolving rapidly towards integrated models of care where each stage of the patient journey is connected, coordinated, and more effective as a result. Albatha Healthcare has long-established capabilities across pharmaceutical distribution, retail pharmacy, medical solutions, and healthcare access. Our recent acquisitions deepen this platform meaningfully, expanding our retail pharmacy footprint while adding behavioural healthcare and diagnostics, two segments that have historically sat outside the traditional care continuum but are increasingly central to it.

The strategic value is threefold. First, we can serve patients more completely, accompanying them across prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care rather than touching only one point in their journey. Second, we create a stronger and more differentiated proposition for our principals and supply partners, who benefit from a single, scaled partner with reach across multiple care settings. Third, the capabilities and knowledge within each segment reinforce the others. Clinical insight from diagnostics informs pharmacy practice, behavioural health integration improves treatment adherence, and distribution efficiency supports the entire chain. This is not diversification for its own sake. It is a deliberate build of an ecosystem where each addition strengthens the whole, positioning Albatha Healthcare to deliver greater value to patients, partners, and the communities we serve across the UAE.

Q: When evaluating a potential acquisition, what factors are considered beyond financial performance?

Q: Financial discipline is fundamental, but

A: Financial discipline is fundamental, but successful acquisitions require a broader assessment.

A: Completing an acquisition is only the beginning

Beyond financial performance, we consider strategic alignment, operational capability, scalability, leadership strength, governance standards, and cultural fit. In healthcare, cultural alignment is important as organisations are built on people, expertise, and a shared commitment to quality and service. We treat cultural fit as a fundamental part of the evaluation, not an afterthought once a deal is done, because a shared philosophy on quality and care is what determines whether an acquisition strengthens the organisation. Milab Scientific is a good example. With over four decades of regional expertise in diagnostics and laboratory sciences, Milab brought not just capabilities but a track record and culture of quality that aligned closely with our own standards, which made the integration stronger from day one. The right acquisition is one where the combined organisation becomes stronger together and creates value that would not have been possible independently.

successful acquisitions require a broader assessment.

of the journey. The real value creation happens through effective integration. Finance plays an important role beyond the acquisition process by ensuring strong governance, performance visibility, and disciplined decision-making while supporting sustainable growth. Integration requires alignment across teams, processes, and objectives, while preserving the strengths that made each organisation successful. Success is measured through multiple dimensions. Financial performance remains important, but so are operational improvements, stronger capabilities, customer reach, and the contribution each business makes to the wider healthcare ecosystem. This is also the clearest lesson for future growth: the success of any acquisition depends not only on the opportunity itself, but on how well organisations work together after the transaction. Future investments must do more than add scale. They must strengthen capabilities, improve access to care, and support better healthcare outcomes. The Group will continue to pursue opportunities that align with its long-term vision of building a resilient, integrated, and future-ready healthcare ecosystem.

Ask the Experts

Dr. Nahla Kazim

Consultant Reproductive Medicine and Infertility Founder, CEO of Kazim's Fertility Barza.

Polycystic ovaries have been renamed as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). As we approach the world PMOS day on September 1, could you tell us how more awareness can be created around this very common malady suffered by so many women? PMOS is far more than a “cyst” problem. It is a complex hormonal and metabolic condition that can affect periods, skin, weight, fertility, mood and long-term health. As we approach World PMOS Day on September 1, one of the most important priorities is to debunk the myths that still surround this condition and encourage early reproductive health advocacy. Many women are told that irregular periods, acne, excess hair growth or weight changes are “normal” or purely cosmetic. They are not. These can be early signs of PMOS and should be taken seriously. We need to educate girls, parents, teachers and healthcare providers that earlier recognition leads to earlier treatment, better fertility outcomes and better long-term health.

Aug/Sep 2026

42

Awareness campaigns must also make clear that PMOS is not only about fertility. It is linked to insulin resistance, diabetes risk, emotional wellbeing and cardiovascular health. When the condition is explained properly, women are more likely to seek help, ask the right questions and feel empowered to act early rather than wait until conception becomes difficult. Early reproductive health advocacy is essential. That means routine screening, timely referrals, and open conversations in schools, clinics and communities. Women should be encouraged to seek help as soon as symptoms appear, rather than after years of silent suffering. The message is simple: PMOS is relatively common condition linked to menstrual irregularities, treatable and should never be ignored. The earlier we educate, the earlier we intervene, and the better the chance of protecting fertility, health and future motherhood.

Q: We have observed the world Lung cancer day on August 1. Can you advise people on how to minimize risk of lung cancer and what screenings to undergo for early detection? Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide, but importantly, many cases can be prevented and early detection can significantly improve outcomes. The most effective way to reduce your risk is not to smoke, or to stop smoking. Avoiding second-hand smoke is also important. Other measures include reducing exposure to occupational carcinogens such as asbestos and certain chemicals, minimizing unnecessary exposure to air pollution, maintaining regular physical activity, and adopting a healthy lifestyle. Early detection is crucial. Lung cancer may cause no symptoms

during its early stages, which is why screening is particularly important for people at high risk.

TIPS: • Do not smoke, and seek professional support to quit if needed. • Avoid second-hand smoke and harmful occupational exposures. • High-risk individuals should discuss annual low-dose CT (LDCT) screening with their doctor. • Screening is generally recommended for adults aged 50– 80 years with a significant smoking history who currently smoke or have quit. • A chest X-ray is not recommended as a lung cancer screening test. • Persistent cough, coughing blood, unexplained weight loss, chest pain, or shortness of breath should always prompt medical evaluation. • Prevention and early detection remain our strongest tools against lung cancer.
