Vol.33/No.3 March 2025

Dear Members,

What a great time of year as we prepare for longer days of sunshine and hopefully some warmer Spring temperatures. Both our first two months of the year toyed with our senses as we experienced days of beautiful weather followed by high winds and dropping temperatures. I am happy to report that everyone adapted and the Club experienced great traffic even though we were forced to cancel a couple events due to inclement weather.

February brought about our most recent change out of the Tavern menus with both lunch and dinner receiving extensive updates. Based on the feedback received from members, we adapted the menus to provide more comfort-based and casual options while maintaining a number of traditional entrees. During the month we also added a “Pop Up” dinner buffet featuring Italian favorites to go alongside our regular monthly specials. With the positive response we received, the “Pop Up” offerings will be making a return during the next few months, so be sure to watch your email. During the upcoming weeks we will also be refreshing the Seaside and Creek menus while maintaining their original identity. It is always our goal to provide three distinct options for your dining pleasure and want you to enjoy a unique experience at each location.

During the past few months, we have been asked on multiple occasions about the existence of our Grievance Committee and how to go about communicating with them. While you can always report any type of infraction to a member of the management team you can find the complete list of Grievance Committee members on our website. Once on the website just follow the prompts for My Club>Governance>Committee List. Feel free to reach out to any of the committee members listed. As with every committee included in our Governance model, the Grievance Committee plays an important role in preserving and extending the culture of

From the Kitchen...

St. Patrick’s Day is approaching, prompting a celebration of Irish culture and traditions. Many people associate the holiday with wearing bright green outfits and gathering with family and friends. One common misconception about Irish cuisine is the prominence of Corned Beef; however, this dish is not traditionally Irish. It originated in the early 1900s in New York City, where Irish Americans chose corned beef as a more affordable alternative to the bacon they were accustomed to before immigrating from Ireland.

In contrast, Soda Bread has a genuine Irish heritage, having been made in Irish kitchens since the mid-1800s, following the introduction of baking soda. This simple yet beloved bread is now enjoyed by many across the globe. We’ll be serving some of my favorite recipes on our St. Patrick’s Day buffet.

News from the Golf Shop...

March is upon us, which means spring is right around the corner! January was definitely a terrible month of weather but as this article is being written, February has brought us some great low to mid 70s temperatures. Keeping our fingers crossed that it sticks around until March!

With March hopefully bringing warmer temperatures, most of the country is awaiting the arrival of spring and the “official” golf season. For us, the spring season is in full swing with not only a lot of Club events but also the Players Championship will be held March 13-16 just up the road in Ponte Vedra at the famed Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. Being a big golf fan, I really enjoy the big tournaments and everything that goes on around them. The Golf Channel does a great job with their “Live From” segments that air in the evenings and provide great commentary on the latest news on the players as well as the course. I plan to get up there to take in some of the action and encourage all of you to as well. Should you get an opportunity to get up there, spend some time at the practice areas and observe how the best players in the world practice, especially if you are there Monday through Wednesday. I firmly believe we can all learn from the best players in the world by watching their practice routines and during tournament days, their warm-up routines and habits. Pay attention to how they practice their short games and putting as well.

Speaking of big tournaments, we have a busy month at the Club, as March is “Championship Month”. This month, our Mixed Couples Club Championship, Men’s and Women’s Club Championship, and Senior Men’s Club Championship will all be played! On top of those great events, we are excited for a new event, our Mixed Couples’ Member Guest, to be played on March 7-8. This event has some history at the Club but went away for a while. We are happy to bring it back and expect it to be a great time!

On top of all of that, we will have some fitting days this month, we will have Next Round club trade-in back to take all your old clubs off your hands, and we’ve invited the FSGA to hold a rules seminar on March 5. Visit the Club website to sign up for any of our tournaments and you can find information on the FSGA rules seminar by visiting their website, www.fsga.org. Below is a list of all our upcoming events for March.

The Nine Hole Golfers have another busy month ahead of them. On March 3 Coastal Niners meet at Grand Haven for our 4th tournament of the season. Hammock Dunes is sending 14 players to this event.

March 5 is our rescheduled date for the Las Vegas joint event with the 18 Hole Golfers. The roll of the dice determines whose drive we take on each hole. And if one joint event is not enough, on March 26 we will be playing the Par 3 Challenge. The entire course will be turned into par 3 holes. Mixed teams of 9 and 18 Hole Golfers will battle for the Par 3 championship.

New Wacky Wednesday games for Nine Hole Golfers were introduced at the beginning of February. On March 12 a Nine Hole Golfer Member-Member event is planned. Players choose their partners. Twosomes will compete for low gross and low net prizes. On March 18 a Nine Hole Golfer Team Best Ball event is scheduled. ABCD teams will be selected by the Golf Department. The teams’ best ball score on each hole will be the lowest gross and net score achieved by any player on the team. Prizes will be awarded to winning teams.

Just around the corner is our final Coastal Niners Tournament of the season. On Wednesday April 9 Hammock Dunes hosts 120 golfers for this event. Invitations will be emailed out in early March.

Hope your March is full of lucky four leaf clovers!

“I don’t run away from a challenge because I am afraid. Instead, I run toward it because the only way to escape fear is to trample it beneath your feet.” Nadia Comâneci

Being a member at Hammock Dunes Club over the past few years has presented me with so many challenges and meeting these challenges has really changed my life. My friends in the HDWGA have been instrumental in leading towards these changes and I’m so grateful to be surrounded by so many wonderful friends. We encourage and support one another to do activities that are new, try a golf swing that we learned, go to a class at the gym, and present opportunities to participate in activities and volunteer in the community. I see women here trampling any fear beneath their feet, so they meet challenges and grow. What a wonderful place we live in!

February brought us the Sweetheart Open and Wacky Wednesdays but Mother Nature postponed the Masters Tournament. The season is really in full swing, and we had a few new members join our group this past month. We truly value each new addition!

March and April will bring us our biggest events of the year including the Club Championship, Member Guest and Member Member. The Links Cup is up and running so best of luck to those teams as they complete their matches. Don’t forget to sign up for Wacky Wednesday play days, if you are not receiving the emails each week please reach out to us.

Winter will be leaving us this month, the greens will be greener and the air will be warmer. No better time to work on your golf game! Happy Spring!

Operation Wildfire

Group Leaders banned together recently to have their weekly golf games raise money to aid those affected by the California Wildfires. Support from Jeff Sandburg's Monday Group, Tim McClean's Tuesday Group, Norm Marshall's BlueMan Group, John Turner's Dogfighters Group, Geoff Paul's Boss Group and Jim Craycroft's Saturday Group raised $3,000.

After seeking input from several of my former partners from KPMG's Los Angeles office and they indicated World Central Kitchen was doing a great job of assisting those who were hurt by the wildfires. The charity has an A+ rating on charity watch, 96% of their donations go to the programs (only 4% used for overhead) and you can direct donations to meals in southern California for people affected by the wildfires.

Sea Island Invitational...

Recently, our Hammock Dunes Director of Golf, Matt Stewart, and Assistant Professional, Mac Harris, took six of our members up to famed Sea Island, GA to participate in the 2025 Sea Island Invitational. This invite-only Pro-Am is held annually at Sea Island Golf Club on their Retreat Course, Plantation Course, and Seaside Course, which hosts the RSM Classic on the PGA Tour. This event invites some of the finest clubs in the country and hosted 63 teams February 9th through February 12th for four days of competition and camaraderie. Besides Hammock Dunes, some other top clubs invited to participate included Merion Golf Club, Baltusrol, Pinehurst, Ocean Forest Golf Club, Canterbury Golf Club, Mountain Top Golf Club, Quail Hollow Club, Kinloch Golf Club, and Biltmore Forest Country Club. Out of the 63-team field, our two Hammock Dunes Club teams finished 4th and 5th respectfully and look forward to going back to compete again in 2026. If you enjoy participating in events such as this or have interest in putting together a golf trip, please do not hesitate to contact Matt for some assistance!

Book Club

Shrewd, smart, savvy, cut-throat, fierce rivals, and bitter enemies — those words best describe A BEAUTIFUIL RIVAL: A NOVEL OF HELENA RUBINSTEIN AND ELIZABETH ARDEN by Gill Paul. It’s meticulously researched historical fiction.

In a world dramatically changing for women, four years before women got the vote, Rubinstein arrived in New York City and took on Arden’s established spot. In 1915, only ladies of ill repute wore makeup; a visit to a nail salon or spa was considered indulgent. Elizabeth Arden, from humble beginnings in Canada, had studied to appear upper class and had a devoted clientele who agreed that women had some responsibility to appear beautiful. Helena Rubinstein started her empire overseas where she falsely claimed that she had a medical background that enabled her to design products that would reverse aging and enhance beauty. The epic rivalry lasted 50 years, including the Great Depression and World War II.

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 19 at 4 p.m. in the Links Lounge/Library when Dianne Bishop will lead our discussion. If you have any questions, contact a book club leader: Julie Duffy, Claudia Pierce, Carol Swinburn.

The Chess Club meets the second Wednesday of each month. Wednesday, March 12 at 4 p.m. in the Links Lounge

Audubon...

Can birds fly backwards? Only one can! Hummingbirds can fly backward. They can hover in midair and they are the only birds that can fly in reverse. A unique structure of their wing joints allows them to rotate in a figure-eight pattern.

Did you know that the Florida legislature is now considering making the flamingo our state bird? In 1927, the mockingbird was designated the state bird. It is also the state bird of Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas.

Opera at Hammock Dunes Club!

Donizetti’s Don Pasquale

The Metropolitan Opera, 2010

Wednesday, March 12  4 p.m.

The New York Times published its rapturous review of this production under the headline, “Oozing Charm, a Heroine Sings, Seduces and Doesn’t Die.” Intriguing though it is, the headline can’t fully describe how special this performance is.

Don Pasquale has found a woman for his nephew, Ernesto, to marry, but Ernesto refuses because he is in love with a poor widow, Norina. Don Pasquale decides to disinherit Ernesto and take a bride himself. Don Pasquale’s physician, Dr. Malatesta, is determined to teach him a lesson. Malatesta says he has found the perfect wife for Don Pasquale, his demure sister Sofronia, newly returned from the convent. Norina agrees to pretend to be Sofronia and “marry” Don Pasquale before a fake notary.

Variety declared that Anna “Netrebko’s Norina at the Met is simply one of the great comic performances to be seen.” The New York Times said that she offers “a vivid portrait of Norina, her fluid voice lustrous,” and that James Levine conducts “a lithe and buoyant reading that beautifully complemented the vocal and theatrical talents of this winning cast,” which also includes John Del Carlo, Mariusz Kwiecień, and Matthew Polenzani.

All are welcome. The program will begin promptly at 4 p.m. in the Board Room; there will be one 15-minute intermission; and it will end at 6:45 p.m. Please remember to arrive early and enjoy a glass of wine or champagne before.

Presented by Jinny Crum-Jones and Ian Jones in association with Barbara Arzonetti

Call today or access the upcoming events feature of the Club App or Website to reserve your seat for Don Pasquale in the Board Room.
