Dear Santa Fe Residents, Welcome to this year’s edition of the Family Caregiver Resource Guide. It’s not only helpful and informative—it also should give you all the reassurance you need that here in Santa Fe we have excellent resources to help families get the help their elderly loved ones need and deserve. Santa Fe is a community that cares—now more than ever. Especially in these extraordinary times, we come together to look after each other. When people are in need, the people of Santa Fe reach out to offer help. This City is compassionate, caring and connected. This spirit is the heart and soul of Santa Fe. You can see it in the way our senior residents live, work and play. And you can see it in the many ways people and organizations provide support and assistance to seniors and their families. In Santa Fe, we are all in it together, especially when the times are challenging. We pull together to help so everyone comes through together. Within the City of Santa Fe government we have a dedicated Senior Services staff that offers help in many ways: From transportation and mobility to home care and nutrition, from recreation to outreach. You can find all of this information and all of these resources in this guide. Put it to use. Make it your own navigational device. Keep it handy as a resource for you and your family to use. If you have questions or suggestions, please reach out to our staff. They want to hear from you and they are there to help.

Gino Rinaldi, Director Dear Readers, We at the City of Santa Fe’s Division of Senior Services take great pride in our offerings for senior citizens throughout the City. For individuals age 60 and above, we provide vital services such as nutritious meals in a congregate setting or delivered directly to our homebound neighbors; door-to-door van transportation; and in-home support services including home management and respite for family caregivers. Additionally, we offer a wide range of fitness and art classes, computer labs and exercise equipment rooms, support for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren, health promotion and consumer safety workshops, Senior Olympics, Bingo and billiards, dances with live bands, and many volunteer opportunities. Most services are free of charge, but some request a small suggested donation. The goal of the Division of Senior Services is to enable our older population to remain as healthy and independent as possible, living at home or in the community with improved well-being. We aim to support our seniors as well as their families through our services. In an effort to address our community’s changing priorities, we continually evaluate our services through our senior program public hearings, surveys, and input from the public. We appreciate the opportunity to support and collaborate with the Family Caregiver Resource Guide once again. Please see the detailed descriptions of our programs and services further in this guidebook. Due to COVID-19 we currently “Closed” all access to our Centers. We are still providing home delivered meals and transportation for medical appointment only. We look forward to seeing you at any one of our five centers once the current closure order has been lifted.

The Division of Senior Services offers a variety of programs to individuals age 60 and over, at five senior centers throughout the City of Santa Fe. The services provided are essential parts of a long-term care system aimed at keeping seniors active, socially engaged, and independent for as long as possible. Please be advised that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all City of Santa Fe senior centers closed in March of 2020 but we hope to reopen them sometime in 2021. As of the publication of this guide, we currently have limited services available. We plan to resume all of the services and programs listed below, as we begin a phased reopening, once COVID is more under control. Currently, we are providing daily hot lunches delivered to homes or offered at curbside from the MEG Senior Center and delivering boxes of groceries once a week to homes. Our transportation service is limited to driving to and from doctor offices and pharmacies. We are mailing or emailing the monthly newsletter. Our “Grandparents Raising Grandchildren” program is providing financial support as described below. We are offering regular phone check-ins to seniors, since we cannot see them in person. ACTIVITIES PROGRAMS

A variety of activities are available for senior citizens; included are exercise classes (Enhance Fitness, Tai Chi, Yoga, Zumba), art classes and workshops, history lectures, ceramics, wood carving, bingo, day trips, consumer education, knitting, sing-along, dances, and holiday events. AARP SMART DRIVER COURSE
The AARP Smart Driver Course is a fourhour class offered on the second Tuesday of each month at the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center. Instructors review safety tips for seniors on the road, including when to think about turning in your keys. Most New
Mexico insurance companies offer a discount to individuals age 50 and over who take the class every three years. These classes are also available to take online at AARP.org. For information or to reserve your space, please call the AARP Information Center at 505-830-3096.
BENEFITS COUNSELING
The New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department offers free, unbiased information from trained volunteers to help determine whether seniors are receiving all the benefits they have earned and are entitled to. Covered benefits include managed care, Medicare, Medicaid, low-cost housing, eyeglasses, hearing aids, residents’ rights, Social Security, utility bill payment assistance, prescription drug coverage, low-cost health and dental care, and more. A Benefits Counselor volunteer is available by appointment on Wednesday afternoons to provide free assistance to seniors at the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center. COMPUTER INSTRUCTION PROGRAM
Three City of Santa Fe senior centers house a computer lab: the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center (MEG), the Luisa Senior Center, and the Pasatiempo Senior Center. Please refer to the monthly Senior Scene newsletter for the latest information about computer lab hours and available classes. Any senior is welcome! FAMILY CAREGIVER SUPPORT ASSISTANCE Education, emotional support and guidance sessions are offered to caregivers who are dealing with stress associated to providing specialized care. We also offer on a limited basis, supplemental assistance and/or
FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM (FGP)
This program offers seniors age 55 and over, opportunities to serve as mentors and tutors for children and youth with special and/ or exceptional needs. Foster Grandparents provide 20 hours of service weekly to community organizations such as schools and Head Starts, offering emotional support to children who have been abused and/or neglected, mentoring troubled teenagers, and assisting children with physical disabilities. Income-eligible volunteers receive modest tax-free stipends, reimbursement for transportation, meals during service, annual physical examinations, and free supplemental insurance while on duty. GRANDPARENTS RAISING GRANDCHILDREN This program is designed to assist grandparents who are raising or providing financial assistance to grandchildren. Yearly, modest vouchers are given to assist eligible seniors age 55 and older with out-of-pocket expenses for their grandchild(ren) such as medical payments, lunch meal tickets, school supplies, clothing, etc. as grant funding is available. HEALTH PROMOTION
This program provides a wide variety of health education sessions and workshops on preventive health issues. Included are monthly blood pressure, blood sugar and oxygen level tests, periodic fall prevention workshops, nutrition classes, and the annual Health & Resource Fair. HOME MANAGEMENT
MEALS ON WHEELS
Home delivered meals are available Monday – Friday for frail homebound elderly. The daily delivered meals are the same
NUTRITION
Congregate dining in a relaxed, welcoming environment is available Monday – Friday at five meal sites throughout the City of Santa Fe. The Division of Senior Services offers well-balanced, nutritious meals that provide 1/3 of the United States Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI’s). Breakfast is served at Luisa, Mary Esther Gonzales, Pasatiempo, and Ventana de Vida senior centers from 7:30 to 8:30 am for a suggested donation of $1.00 for seniors age 60 and over and a fee of $7.00 for those 59 and under. Lunch is served at all five senior centers from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm for a suggested donation of $1.50 for seniors age 60 and over and a fee of $7.00 for those 59 and under. Meal tickets are available for a suggested donation of $12.50 for 10 meals, saving you $2.50 overall. PUBLIC RELATIONS
Division of Senior Services staff members are available to answer questions and provide information regarding services and programs for senior citizens offered by the City of Santa Fe. We can speak to your civic group or in your classroom, write an article for your company newspaper, participate in radio/television/print interviews, or set up an informational booth at your community event. To learn more about current senior center activities, menus, events and more, please look to the Senior Scene, a monthly newsletter published by the Division. The Senior Scene is available online at www. santafenm.gov/senior_scene_newsletter as well as at all City of Santa Fe senior centers, other city facilities, and at various healthcare agencies and senior housing sites. RESPITE CARE PROGRAM

RETIRED SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM (RSVP)
RSVP provides seniors age 55 and over with a variety of engaging volunteer opportunities that aim to meet vital community needs. RSVP recruits, matches and supports volunteers in their service through a free supplemental insurance program, by providing access to conferences and trainings, hosting volunteer appreciation and social events, and distributing recognition and thank you gifts. Volunteer hours vary depending on the opportunity, which may include: food distributions/pantries, consumer/benefits counseling, mentoring/ tutoring, hospital and hospice services, emergency preparedness, senior center activities, environmental work, one-day events and more. Printing your name on our sign in sheets any time you participate helps our programs to secure funding, which allows us to continue providing services to the older adult population. Please note the expiration date listed on your senior membership card and return to the MEG Senior Center at that time to have staff update/reassess you. SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM (SCP)
This program offers seniors age 55 and over opportunities to serve as companions and/ or caregivers for lonely/isolated/frail senior citizens. Senior Companions provide 20 hours of companionship per week, serving frail
homebound elderly and offering emotional support to seniors with disabilities, who are lonely, or who have been neglected or abused. Income-eligible Senior Companions receive modest tax-free stipends, reimbursement for transportation and meals during service, annual physical examinations and free supplemental insurance while on duty. 50+ SENIOR OLYMPIC PROGRAM
Senior Olympians are men and women age 50 and over who participate in friendly competition with their peers city-wide. Athletes of all levels participate in a wide variety of sports and recreational events within their own age category. This program is designed to further motivate seniors to participate in year-round wellness activities, which heighten their physical and mental fitness. Many special events are coordinated each year. Senior centers host dances, birthday celebrations, emergency preparedness events, seminars and holiday events. TRANSPORTATION
Door-to-door transportation services are provided to seniors age 60 and over Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Rides include but are not limited to: grocery stores, doctor appointments, senior centers, movie theaters, etc., although medical appointments are given priority over all other rides. Transportation reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance before 4:00 p.m., and can be scheduled up to five business days prior. There is a suggested donation of $.50 per ride, or clients may purchase a ride ticket for 25 rides for a suggested donation of $10, which saves the client $2.50. Please note that on the first Tuesday of each month, the last call for a ride is at 2:45 p.m. due to mandatory staff training.
