It’s helpful and informative and it also should give you the reassurance you need that here in Santa Fe we have excellent resources to help families get the help their elderly loved ones need and deserve. Santa Fe is a community that cares—now more than ever. Especially in these extraordinary times, we come together to look after each other. When people are in need, the people of Santa Fe reach out to offer help. This City is compassionate, caring and connected. This spirit is the heart and soul of Santa Fe. You can see it in the way our senior residents live, work and play. And you can see it in the many ways people and organizations provide support and assistance to seniors and their families. In Santa Fe, we are all in it together, especially when the times are challenging. We pull together to help so everyone comes through together. Within the City of Santa Fe government we have a dedicated Senior Services staff that offers help in many ways: From transportation and mobility to home care and nutrition, from recreation to outreach. You can find all of this information and all of these resources in this guide. Put it to use. Make it your own navigational device. Keep it handy as a resource for you and your family to use.

Gino Rinaldi, Director Dear Readers, We at the City of Santa Fe’s Division of Senior Services take great pride in our offerings for senior citizens throughout the City. Our goal is to enable our older population to remain as healthy and independent as possible, living at home or in the community with improved well-being. We aim to support our seniors as well as their families through our services. In an effort to address our community’s changing priorities, we continually evaluate our services through our senior program public hearings, surveys, and input from the public. Due to COVID-19 we have temporarily closed all public access to our senior centers. We continue to provide curbside pick-up lunches every weekday, as well as home delivered meals to those who cannot access the curbside service. Our transportation service is currently for medical appointments, pharmacies and vaccine appointments only. We continue to operate many of our programs, including Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Foster Grandparent Program, Senior Companion Program, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren reimbursement program and Durable Medical Equipment loan bank. Prior to COVID restrictions, we had (and we plan to offer again) many vital services for seniors 60 and over. These include nutritious meals in a congregate setting or delivered directly to our homebound neighbors; door-to-door van transportation; navigation assistance; and in-home support services including home management and respite for family caregivers. Additionally, we offer a wide range of fitness and art classes, computer labs and exercise equipment rooms, health promotion and consumer safety workshops, Senior Olympics, Bingo and billiards, dances with live bands, and more. Most services are free of charge, but some request a small suggested donation. ptpubco.com

Welcome to the Santa Fe Eldercare Network. The Santa Fe Healthcare Network is now The Santa Fe Eldercare Network. It’s a subtle change reflecting our growing membership that provides a wide variety of services to our elder community besides those only related to healthcare. I met a woman not too long ago who, well into her nineties, commented to me that “growing old in this country is a privilege but also a challenge”. She had the privilege of living past ninety, but she was faced with the challenge of being able to live well. We are all living longer now. It is not unusual to live beyond ninety. Access to better medical care and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will add quantity to our lives. We also want quality of life. The last two years have given us all a chance to think about quality, what is important in our lives, while the answer to what is important in our lives is different for everyone. Having quantity without quality, unfortunately, may not mean much. This is the challenge we all face. The members of the Santa Fe Eldercare Network want everyone to have both. We are committed to seeing that every elder in Santa Fe not only lives long but also lives well. Our members consist of the best professional eldercare providers in Santa Fe. All are proud of what they do and honored to be a member of our network. By working with one member, you are essentially working with all. We refer and guide people in need of different services to others in our group who can provide them. Collectively we offer comprehensive wraparound care. We always welcome other professionals who provide services to our elder community to join us as a member. The 2022 Caregiver Guide is full of services and programs that can help you, and anyone you may be caring for, achieve the goal of having both quantity and quality of life. CITY OF SANTA FE DIVISION OF SENIOR SERVICES
The Division of Senior Services offers a variety of programs to individuals age 60 and over, at five senior centers throughout the City of Santa Fe. The services provided are essential parts of a long-term care system aimed at keeping seniors active, socially engaged, and independent for as long as possible. Please be advised that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all City of Santa Fe Senior Centers remain closed as of the publication of this guide. We hope to begin a phased reopening in early 2022, and eventually resume all services listed below. Several of our services are currently available to seniors. We provide daily hot lunches delivered to homes or offered at curbside from the MEG Senior Center. Our transportation service is limited to driving to and from doctor offices, pharmacies and vaccine appointments. We are mailing or emailing over 2,600 copies of our monthly Senior Scene Magazine. Our “Grandparents Raising Grandchildren” program is providing financial support as described below. Staff provides regular phone check-ins to seniors, since we cannot see them in person. Our Foster Grandparent Program is placing volunteers in Santa Fe Public Schools, and our Senior Companion volunteers offer telephone support. The RSVP Program is recruiting, placing and supporting hundreds of volunteers in non-profit organizations all over Santa Fe. A variety of activities are available for senior citizens; included are exercise classes (Enhance Fitness, Tai Chi, Yoga, Zumba), art classes and workshops, history lectures, ceramics, wood carving, bingo, day trips, consumer education, knitting, sing-along, dances, and holiday events. AARP SMART DRIVER COURSE

The AARP Smart Driver Course is a four-hour class offered at the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center and online at AARP.org. Instructors review safety tips for seniors on the road, including when to think about turning in your keys. Most New Mexico insurance

Three City of Santa Fe senior centers house a computer lab: the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center (MEG), the Luisa Senior Center, and the Pasatiempo Senior Center. Any senior is welcome! FAMILY CAREGIVER SUPPORT ASSISTANCE
Education, emotional support and guidance sessions are offered to caregivers who are dealing with stress associated to providing specialized care. We also offer on a limited basis, supplemental assistance and/or equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, grab bars, shower/tub chairs, canes, etc. to qualifying participants. GRANDPARENTS RAISING GRANDCHILDREN
This program is designed to assist grandparents who are raising or providing financial assistance to grandchildren. Yearly, modest vouchers are given to assist eligible seniors age 55 and older with out-of-pocket expenses for their grandchild(ren) such as medical payments, lunch meal tickets, school supplies, clothing, etc. as grant funding is available. HEALTH PROMOTION
This program provides a wide variety of health education sessions and workshops on preventive health issues. Included are monthly blood pressure, blood sugar and oxygen level tests, periodic fall prevention workshops, nutrition classes, and the annual Health & Resource Fair. HOME MANAGEMENT
MEALS ON WHEELS
Home delivered meals are available Monday – Friday for frail homebound elderly. The daily delivered meals are the same as those served in the senior center meal sites, which provide
Congregate dining in a relaxed, welcoming environment is available Monday – Friday at five meal sites throughout the City of Santa Fe. The Division of Senior Services offers wellbalanced, nutritious meals that provide 1/3 of the United States Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI’s). Breakfast is served at Luisa, Mary Esther Gonzales, Pasatiempo, and Ventana de Vida senior centers from 7:30 to 8:30 am for a suggested donation of $1.00 for seniors age 60 and over and a fee of $7.00 for those 59 and under. Lunch is served at all five senior centers from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm for a suggested donation of $1.50 for seniors age 60 and over and a fee of $7.00 for those 59 and under. Meal tickets are available for a suggested donation of $12.50 for 10 meals, saving you $2.50 overall. Division of Senior Services staff members are available to answer questions and provide information regarding services and programs for senior citizens offered by the City of Santa Fe. We can speak to your civic group or in your classroom, write an article for your company newspaper, participate in radio/television/print interviews, or set up an informational booth at your community event. RESPITE CARE PROGRAM
This program sends Senior Services staff to provide relief to primary caregivers of individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia-related disorders, thus enabling the caregiver a break from the stress and the special care needs required of those individuals. RETIRED SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM (RSVP)
RSVP provides seniors age 55 and over with a variety of engaging volunteer opportunities that aim to meet vital community needs. RSVP recruits, matches and supports volunteers in their service. We provide mileage reimbursement, a free supplemental insurance program, access to and reimbursement for conferences and trainings, volunteer appreciation and social events, and recognition and thank you gifts. Volunteer hours vary depending on the opportunity, which may include: food distributions/pantries, consumer counseling, mentoring/tutoring, hospital and hospice services, senior center activities, environmental work, one-day events and more. 50+ SENIOR OLYMPIC PROGRAM
Senior Olympians are men and women age 50 and over who participate in friendly competition with their peers city-wide. Athletes of all levels participate in a wide variety of sports and recreational events within their own age category. This program is designed to further motivate seniors to participate in year-round wellness activities, which heighten their physical and mental fitness. Many special events are coordinated each year. Senior centers host dances, birthday celebrations, emergency preparedness events, seminars and holiday events. TRANSPORTATION
Door-to-door transportation services are provided to seniors age 60 and over Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Rides include but are not limited to: grocery stores, doctor appointments, senior centers, movie theaters, etc., although medical appointments are given priority over all other rides. Transportation reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance before 4:00 p.m., and can be scheduled up to five business days prior. There is a suggested donation of $.50 per ride, or clients may purchase a ride ticket for 25 rides for a suggested donation of $10, which saves the client $2.50. Please note that on the first Tuesday of each month, the last call for a ride is at 2:45 p.m. due to mandatory staff training.
