Dear Santa Fe Residents, Welcome to this year’s edition of the Family Caregiver Resource Guide! I know that you will find it both helpful and informative—and it will reassure you that here in Santa Fe there are many resources to help families help their elderly loved ones. If there is one thing that is true about our community it is this: We care. We care about each and every individual, we care about each other, and we reach out to any and all who are looking for help. Santa Fe is a caring community. Nowhere is that more true than in the helping hands we extend to our senior Santa Feans. As I look around our amazing City, I see older Santa Feans staying active, staying engaged, staying healthy, and staying happy—in large part because of the community of care that exemplifies this remarkable place. Here in Santa Fe there are organizations and people whose purpose is to serve and support families who are serving and supporting their seniors. Within the City of Santa Fe we have a dedicated Senior Services staff that stands ready to help in a variety of important ways, from transportation to home care, from residential living options to nutrition and recreation. All of this information—and more—is contained in this friendly, useful, and informative guide. So put it to good use, reach out to the organizations and people who are in this guide, and let it be a strong supportive resource for you and your family. If you have questions or suggestions, please reach out to our staff. They stand ready to help. And most important, thank you for all you do for the aging Santa Feans who are so important to your life—and so vital for our City.

Gino Rinaldi, Director Dear Readers, We at the City of Santa Fe’s Division of Senior Services take great pride in our offerings for senior citizens throughout the City. For individuals age 60 and above, we provide vital services such as nutritious meals in a congregate setting or delivered directly to our homebound neighbors; door-to-door van transportation; and in-home support services including home management and respite for family caregivers. Additionally, we offer a wide range of fitness and art classes, computer labs and exercise equipment rooms, support for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren, health promotion and consumer safety workshops, Senior Olympics, Bingo and billiards, dances with live bands, and many volunteer opportunities. Most services are free of charge, but some request a small suggested donation. The goal of the Division of Senior Services is to enable our older population to remain as healthy and independent as possible, living at home or in the community with improved well-being. We aim to support our seniors as well as their families through our services. In an effort to address our community’s changing priorities, we continually evaluate our services through our senior program public hearings, surveys, and input from the public. We appreciate the opportunity to support and collaborate with the Family Caregiver Resource Guide once again. Please see the detailed descriptions of our programs and services further in this guidebook. We invite all Santa Feans to visit us at any of our five senior centers and see what we have to offer. Join us for lunch or breakfast, take a Tai Chi, Yoga or Brain Gym class, meet the ceramics or woodcarving groups, learn some email tips, request a tour of the main senior center, make a few new friends. While many of you have been utilizing the services of our member organizations since the inception of the healthcare network in 2006, to others, we feel like a brand new community. Every year, we welcome new members to our friendly network comprised of healthcare providers bringing a diverse set of talents together for those seeking healthcare services for their elderly loved ones. AARP SMART DRIVER COURSE

The AARP Smart Driver Course is a fourhour class offered on the second Tuesday of each month at the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center. Instructors review safety tips for seniors on the road, including when to think about turning in your keys. Most New Mexico insurance companies offer a discount to individuals age 50 and over who take the class every three years. For information or to reserve your space, please call the AARP Information Center at 505-830-3096.

BENEFITS COUNSELING

The New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department offers free, unbiased information from trained volunteers to help determine whether seniors are receiving all the benefits they have earned and are entitled to. Covered benefits include managed care, Medicare, Medicaid, low-cost housing, eyeglasses, hearing aids, residentsâ€™ rights, Social Security, utility bill payment assistance, prescription drug coverage, low-cost health and dental care, and more. A Benefits Counselor volunteer is available by appointment on Wednesday afternoons to provide free assistance to seniors at the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center. To schedule a 30-minute appointment, please call 505-955-4721.

COMPUTER INSTRUCTION PROGRAM

Three City of Santa Fe senior centers house a computer lab: the Mary Esther Gonzales Senior Center (MEG), the Luisa Senior Center, and the Pasatiempo Senior Center. Please refer to the monthly Senior Scene newsletter for the latest information about computer lab hours and available classes. Any senior is welcome! FAMILY CAREGIVER SUPPORT ASSISTANCE 14

Education, emotional support and guidance

sessions are offered to caregivers who are dealing with stress associated to providing specialized care. We also offer on a limited basis, supplemental assistance and/or equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, grab bars, shower/tub chairs, canes, etc. to qualifying participants. FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM (FGP)

This program offers seniors age 55 and over, opportunities to serve as mentors and tutors for children and youth with special and/or exceptional needs. Foster Grandparents provide 20 hours of service weekly to community organizations such as schools and Head starts, offering emotional support to children who have been abused and/or neglected, mentoring troubled teenagers, and assisting children with physical disabilities. Income-eligible volunteers receive modest tax-free stipends, reimbursement for transportation, meals during service, annual physical examinations, and free supplemental insurance while on duty. GRANDPARENTS RAISING GRANDCHILDREN

This program is designed to assist grandparents who are raising or providing financial assistance to grandchildren. Home delivered meals are available Monday – Friday for frail homebound elderly. The daily delivered meals are the same as those served in the senior center meal sites, which provide 1/3 of the United States Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI’s). Congregate dining in a relaxed, welcoming environment is available Monday – Friday at five meal sites throughout the City of Santa Fe. 50+ SENIOR OLYMPIC PROGRAM

Senior Olympians are men and women age 50 and over who participate in friendly competition with their peers city-wide. Athletes of all levels participate in a wide variety of sports and recreational events within their own age category. This program is designed to further motivate seniors to participate in year-round wellness activities, which heighten their physical and mental fitness. TRANSPORTATION

Door-to-door transportation services are provided to seniors age 60 and over Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Rides include but are not limited to: grocery stores, doctor appointments, senior centers, movie theaters, etc., although medical appointments are given priority over all other rides. Transportation reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance before 4:00 p.m., and can be scheduled up to five business days prior. There is a suggested donation of $.50 per ride, or clients may purchase a ride ticket for 25 rides for a suggested donation of $10, which saves the client $2.50. Please note that on the first Tuesday of each month, the last call for a ride is at 2:45 p.m. due to mandatory staff training.
