A complete cleaning should include replacing the filter and cleaning the ductwork, from where the air enters the return duct, through the air handler (blower, coil, and head exchange), to the exit, where the air is released to condition the home. Why To Do It • You Save Energy: According to the United States Department of Energy, HVAC systems account for approximately 56 percent of the energy use in a typical home. When those systems begin to wear, they begin to operate less efficiently. Even in new buildings, HVAC systems can be dirty, and will become more heavily fouled through everyday use. Contaminated heating and cooling systems can be problematic for occupants, contributing to poor indoor air quality, system failure and increased energy use. Teen Spirit Rewarded
hen young people volunteer, it’s good for the community. But it turns out it can also be good for the volunteer.
According to a recent national survey conducted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, teens encounter a virtuous cycle when they give back. Nine in 10 teens who volunteer said service makes them feel good about themselves and their participation leads to feeling needed (59 percent), feeling happier and less stressed (59 percent), and feeling more connected to people (54 percent). The awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the
National Association of Secondary School Principals, recognize students in grades 5 to 12 who are giving back to their communities. Applications are open now; to enter, middle and high school students who have volunteered in the past year can go to http://spirit.prudential.com and complete the online application. myth on many college campuses is that “study drugs” help students succeed in preparing for and taking exams. Study drugs are typically prescription stimulants that people take to lose weight, to stay awake or to combat attention deficit disorders. However, research has shown that no drug can make a student smarter or help ace an exam.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), produced by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), collects information on substance use among civilian, noninstitutionalized adults in the United States. In 2013, 1.7 percent of full-time college students aged 18 to 22 had misused prescription stimulants in the month prior to being surveyed. Prescription stimulant misuse is when someone uses a drug without a prescription or simply for the feeling the drug caused.
Parents, prevention specialists and college staff can help by being aware of how students may be misusing prescription stimulants for academic gain, particularly during the peak months that coincide with fall midterms and finals. Hot Colors For Kitchens

he American kitchen these days is more than just a place to cook and eat. It’s become the central meeting place or “hub” of the home and the right colors can really help warm it up. Helpful Hints To help you brighten your kitchen, Jessica McConnell, Manager, Color, Finish & Material at the Whirlpool Corporation Institute of Home Science, offers a few tips. For a simple update for your kitchen, she recommends adding pops of color with different textiles, cookware and kitchen gadgets each season: orange for Halloween, red for Christmastime as well as pearly white and frosty pine, which can be a more understated, modern and unexpected approach to holiday themes. Also, gold is a hot color trend for kitchens right now, and few things say holidays like shiny gold accents. It’s pretty amazing, McConnell says, what some new dish towels, a rug and coordinating throw pillows (if, say, you have a breakfast nook with bench seating) can do to update your kitchen. Another simple trick she offers is to add color in the form of a tea-pot or cookware that you can display either on your cooktop or on a shelf or rack. A nice container of kitchen tools and gadgets is a really simple and easy way to tie it all together. The next time you’re in the market for new kitchen appliances or in the midst of remodeling your home, consider this: When it comes to kitchens, black is the new, well, black. More Americans Choose Chiropractic Care: Gallup ar more adults than anyone thought are seeking help from chiropractors, according to a new nationwide Gallup report.
In the last year alone, according to the just-released “2015 Gallup-Palmer Inaugural Report: Americans’ Perceptions of Chiropractic,” 33.6 million Americans aged 18 and older turned to chiropractic care to relieve conditions like back and neck pain. That’s about 63 percent more than the 20.6 million adults previously estimated in less comprehensive studies, and likely indicates that the “chiropractic first” movement touted by health experts troubled by the overuse of addictive drugs and surgery has become increasingly popular. “Americans who have exposure to chiropractors are more likely to have an opinion of them, and in general those opinions are positive,” Gallup concluded. Among the other key findings: * While most patients only head to a doctor of chiropractic when they’re in pain, 31 percent of adults who’ve been treated within the last five years say they
prefer regular visits -regardless of whether they’re hurting. * Those under age 50 are likelier to say a chiropractor would be their first choice for treating back or neck pain. * So “strongly committed” are recent users that they averaged 11 visits in the last 12 months. “This groundbreaking report shows Americans are embracing chiropractic as an alternative to other costly and invasive treatments,” said the not-for-profit Foundation for Chiropractic Progress’ Sherry McAllister, DC. Indeed, today’s chiropractors -- with a minimum of 7 years of higher education, including clinical patient management -- are not only sought out for pain relief, but also for advice on healthy living, increased flexibility and injury prevention. Preparing For Life With Your Adopted Dog

ach year, approximately 7 million pets enter U.S. shelters. Unfortunately, 3 million of them are euthanized—but you can help change that. Save a life by choosing to adopt your next dog and consider these tips.
While loving an adopted dog comes with a cost, the lifetime of love in return is invaluable. Step 4: Choose your companion While it’s impossible to predict which dog will steal your heart, it can be helpful to research breeds ahead of time that fit your lifestyle. Consider things like energy levels, grooming maintenance required and the ideal age of your companion before going to the shelter. For example, a corgi’s high energy is a great complement to an outdoorsy lifestyle. However, an older dog may be a better fit for a low-key environment. If your heart is set on a purebred, you’ll be glad to know that about 25 percent of dogs in shelters are purebred.
Step 1: Test the waters Before committing to adopting your own dog, volunteer to pet sit for a friend or foster from a shelter. You can care for a dog while it grows or recovers from illness or surgery. Plus, you can help save lives by freeing up space in a shelter. Step 2: Do your research Find vet offices close to home and your job, as well as low-cost spay/ neuter clinics in case your dog isn’t already fixed. Check out breed restrictions where you live to ensure that when you bring your new dog home, there are no barriers to unconditional love. Step 3: Make a plan Plan a budget to make sure your new dog gets what he or she needs. These costs can range from pet sitters to training classes, and from food and bowls to collars and a leash.
