Boomers Pursue Business Ownership Over Retirement
mall businesses create jobs, help sustain communities and are a driving force behind the U.S. economy. Guide To Warm Weather Comfort And Safety

arm weather means not just an increase in outdoor activities but emergency room visits as well. By taking a few steps to prepare, you can protect yourself and your family for more fun in the sun. Dr. Jamison Satterfield, a pediatrician for over 25 years, advises pulling together a bag to bring on your outings to help avoid unnecessary hospital visits. Essential items that should not be overlooked or underestimated include: First Aid Kit: If left untreated, cuts and scrapes can get infected. Always keep on hand a topical sterilizer—tube of Neosporin—for a quick cleanup. Adhesive bandages, gauze, medical tape, alcohol wipes and an ice pack may also come in handy. Check your kit regularly to replace used items and remove expired products. Sunblock: The rate of deadly melanoma skin cancer has almost tripled in the last 35 years despite all the warnings. Dr. Satterfield recommends broad-spectrum sunscreens with an SPF of 30 or higher. Water-resistant sunscreens can be less effective so it’s best to avoid them unless you’re going swimming. In addition, sunscreen containing insect repellent has its SPF cut by more than 30 percent. “When it comes to sunscreen, apply more and do it more often,” added Dr. Satterfield. Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and reapplied generously every two hours. Over time, sunscreens lose effectiveness, changing in color or texture. At the expiration date or yearly, sunscreen should be discarded. Also note, over-the-counter pain relief medications and antihistamines decrease the efficacy of sunscreen. So do some prescription drugs including antibiotics
as well as many acne treatments containing benzoyl peroxide. Mosquito Repellent: Chances of contracting mosquito-borne illnesses are on the rise, especially for children and the elderly. A study by The New England Journal of Medicine found that bath oil, which some people use as a repellent, protects for less than 10 minutes. Other natural repellents such as eucalyptus oil, cactus juice, lemongrass oil, juniper, or even peppermint or vanilla, are no better. While DEET certainly works, Dr. Satterfield does not recommend it for children under age 1. He does recommend Thermacell Mosquito Repellent products, including lanterns, handheld repellers and backyard torches, which are designed to create a 15x15-foot “bubble” of protection that biting pests cannot penetrate. These products use a repellent that mimics the natural insecticide found in chrysanthemums and are virtually odorless, flameless and portable. Emergency Car Kit: Keep on hand hand-wipes or sanitizer, bottles of water, and hearty snacks that can take the heat, such as dried fruits, nuts and granola bars, for a quick, protein-rich snack. Other emergency items can include a couple of flares, flashlight, hats, umbrella and blanket. Dr. Satterfield said he also keeps a Thermacell repeller on hand for roadside use and picnics. Jamison J. Home Selling: Which Fixes Are Worth It to Lure Buyers?

f you’re one of those homeowners who’s been moaning about how hard it’s been trying to sell your house, your bargaining power -- you remember that concept, right? -- hasn’t been completely devastated just because a flood of new foreclosures is expected to hit the market as a result of the recent $25 billion “robo-signing” mortgage settlement. In fact, while studies have shown your own property value could take up to another 4 percent hit if you’re within a quarter mile of a foreclosure ultimately snapped up at auction or taken back by the lender, the thing to remember is this: Most buyers today are only interested in homes that are “move-in-ready,” so if yours isn’t ... well, there’s your problem. “Buyers generally look at ‘as-is’ properties that need work, and say ‘I’ll pass,’” says Patsy O’Neill, a sales associate with Sotheby’s in Montclair, N.J. “That’s why I tell clients it’s worth making certain strategic fixes if they’re looking for quicker and more profitable sales.” So, which “fixes” are worth it, and which aren’t? Read on: Worth It: Addressing major maintenance and safety issues. Would you buy a house with faulty electrical wiring? Enough said. Not Worth It: Major bath renovations. “Whatever you do might not suit
the buyer,” says O’Neill, “and meanwhile, you’d have spent as much as tens of thousands of dollars.” Meaning, stick to things like repairing cracked shower doors, and save your visions of a modern-day spa for your own new abode. Worth It: Ripping up old carpeting. Whether you replace it with new carpets or refinish the underlying wood floor is less important than getting rid of an eyesore. Not Worth It: Major kitchen renovations. Same “taste” issue as above. Worth It: Anything that enhances “curb appeal.” If the first thing prospective buyers notice even before exiting their cars is that your roof looks like it’s been whipped by a tornado, say, chances are you’ve already lost the sale. “It’s a huge turn-off,” says O’Neill, “and makes buyers predisposed to find even more things they don’t like.” So, if your roof needs replacing, check out the Value Collection Lifetime Designer Shingles from GAF (the largest roofing manufacturer in North America), which have the look of luxury shingles but at very affordable prices (www.gaf.com). New Movement In Treating Paralysis

f you or someone you care for is ever among the nearly 2 million Americans living with spinal cord injury, recent research could mean good news for you. There’s been a significant breakthrough therapy for individuals living with spinal cord injury. The once inconceivable notion that a damaged spinal cord could be repaired is closer to reality, report researchers from UCLA and the University of Louisville in the medical journal Brain. New Hope As a result of epidural stimulation of the lower spinal cord, four young men who were paralyzed for years were able to voluntarily move their legs and bear weight. Even more revolutionary, the participants experienced significant improvements with autonomic functions—including bladder, bowel and sexual control—an unprecedented breakthrough for the field. Temperature regulation and cardiovascular and respiratory functions also improved. Epidural Stimulation Explained Epidural stimulation involves applying electrical current to specific parts of the spinal cord. This mimics signals the brain normally transmits to reengage the spine’s neural network and initiate movement. The Big Idea “While we hoped that epidural stimulation would facilitate movement
for individuals with complete paralysis, the autonomic recovery was an accidental discovery, but a quantum leap toward reversing the most devastating and life-threatening complications of a spinal cord injury,” said Peter Wilderotter, president and CEO of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. The Reeve Foundation created The Big Idea campaign to raise $15 million to fund the next phase of research and bring this potentially lifechanging therapy to individuals living with spinal cord injury and possibly other neuromuscular disorders, such as stroke, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s. The money raised will fund a five-year study of more participants who will be implanted and trained, as well as evaluated post-intervention. “Epidural stimulation has challenged what it means to be diagnosed with a complete injury and confirmed that recovery is possible even years following trauma. The Big Idea is a culmination of decades of basic science and the commitment of researchers to advance promising therapies,” said Susan Harkema, Ph.D., principal investigator on The Big Idea study, University of Louisville professor. ater is a limited and essential resource, but too many people are unaware of how much is wasted. Believe it or not, the average American family uses more than 300 gallons of water each day, and 70 percent of that water is used inside the home. Unfortunately, much of that water is wasted without a homeowner’s knowledge.
