Employment Growth May Be From Your Street
T
here is no doubt the economy is healthier than it has been in quite some time. One has only to look to the news to discern that the U.S. is in the midst of an economic growth spurt. Underscoring a strengthening economy is that as of last month, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, 3 million more Americans were earning paychecks, compared with 12 months ago. And yet, even as unemployment rates are at an all-time low and at levels not seen in six years, there are still those who are struggling to find a job.
“Today 80 percent of investments in private companies are made within a 50 mile radius of that enterprise,” says YourStreet Funds CEO Stephen H. Watkins. “The problem is that Wall Street struggles to find these companies in an efficient manner.” That’s where the YourStreet Funds Independent Sales Organization (ISO) members come in. Your Medicare Advantage Could Get Cut
f you’re eligible for Medicare, you are eligible for Medicare Advantage (MA), a program that lets you sign on with a private insurance carrier that then gets paid by Medicare to take care of you. It’s popular; over 16 million, or about a third of Medicare-eligible seniors, chose this option. MA is a win-win for enrollees and insurers because it moves away from the fee-for-service model and toward a preventative care form of health care. Certain people in Washington, however, decided they were paying too much to the private insurers for some of the benefits and preventative measures, so, as part of the quest to find money to pay for other Washington priorities, they decided to cut the MA payments. In the last two years, they’ve cut almost 10 percent and they are proposing more cuts in 2016 and beyond. A just-released study by Oliver Wyman indicates that by 2016 these cuts will raise the premiums for 1.1 million seniors in New York an average of more than $120 a month. Two million seniors in California will see an increase of over $100 a month and 1.5 million in Florida will pay over $80 more a month for MA. That’s a big increase for people whose resources
are already stretched. RetireSafe, a national grassroots organization that advocates and educates on behalf of America’s seniors, sent an e-mail to its supporters asking them what they thought about these cuts to MA. It was inundated with replies; one responder said, “As a senior utilizing a Medicare Advantage program, I have already seen my benefits slashed.” Another said, “For one thing, it advocates ‘prevention’ rather than ‘after the fact’ usage of medical coverage. The SilverSneakers program keeps elders up and moving.” Even many members of Congress seem to be having second thoughts about these cuts, both Republicans and Democrats; 239 from the House and 53 from the Senate signed a letter saying the cuts should be stopped. Americans of all ages and either party are asking their legislators where they stand on this issue. You too can get involved. Survey: Americans Like Their Community Associations
T
he vast majority of the 65 million Americans who live in condominiums and homeowners associations are satisfied with their communities, according to a national survey conducted by Public Opinion Strategies for the Foundation for Community Association Research. Ninety percent of community association residents rate their overall association experience as positive (64 percent) or neutral (26 percent), with only 10 percent expressing dissatisfaction. Key findings * 90 percent of residents say association board members serve the best interests of their communities. *
83 percent say they get along well with the immediate neighbors.
* 83 percent say their community managers provide value and support to residents and their associations. * 70 percent of residents say their association rules protect and enhance property values; 4 percent say the rules harm property values. “This affirms that people who live in condominiums and homeowners associations are overwhelmingly pleased with their communities,” says Tom Skiba, CEO of Community Associations Institute (CAI). “That level of satisfaction compares very favorably with American attitudes toward other institutions like government, industry and even our public schools.” Room for improvement

Skiba acknowledges that all associations do not function as well as they should. He says discontent can be caused by a number of factors, including unreasonable association boards, residents who disregard rules they have agreed to follow and difficult financial circumstances for the association and individual homeowners. “Disagreements and conflict are inevitable,” Skiba says. “Just as there are poorly governed communities, many associations must contend with difficult and intransigent residents, including owners who refuse to follow established rules or pay their fair share for utilities, services and amenities provided by the association.” Keys to success Skiba says the keys to successful associations are clear expectations, open communication between residents and association leaders, transparency in governance, strong professional management, dedicated volunteers and adherence to best practices for association governance and management. 8 Tips to Help Seniors Conquer Stress
s boomers retire from their jobs at unprecedented rates in the U.S., you’d think they’d be spending their free time with friends, lingering over the morning newspaper and coffee or taking January vacations in a warm place. But many seniors are finding themselves in a predicament that few anticipate in retirement: parenting for a second time. Census reports indicate that 2.7 million grandparents are responsible for their grandchildren. Their added duties may be fulfilling, but they may be stressful, too. In fact, many things can trigger stress among retired adults -- paying bills on a fixed income, failing health, caring for ill parents or spouses, or even grandparenting. Excessive stress can lead to serious health problems. “When stressed, the body releases substances such as cortisol and adrenaline that affect every organ and can cause muscle tension, insulin secretion and increased heart rate,” said Arthur Hayward, M.D., a geriatrician and the clinical lead physician for elder care with Kaiser Permanente’s Care Management Institute. “You can’t avoid stress, but managing it can help preserve your health and well-being,” Dr. Hayward added. He recommends identifying and understanding the cause of your stress and finding ways to relieve it, such as these eight tips:
1. Pace yourself. Don’t take on too much. Be aware of your limitations. 2. Set realistic goals and expectations, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. 3. Plan time for yourself. Recharge your batteries. 4. Exercise and eat a balanced diet. Get plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. 5. Try relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga. 6. Get enough sleep. If you have problems sleeping, talk to your doctor. Drinking caffeinated beverages and alcohol can affect your ability to get a good night’s sleep. 7. Talk with a loved one or write in a journal. 8. he news is full of headlines about the flu, CRE and the measles. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that Clostridium difficile (C.diff) infections have doubled in recent years. If you or a loved one needs to go to the hospital, how do you avoid contracting a deadly infection?

There’s no disputing the facts -- infections are caused by microorganisms like C.diff, MRSA, VRE, CRE and norovirus. These antibiotic-resistant germs lurk on high-touch surfaces in hospitals and health care facilities -- and some, like C.diff, can live for months on bedrails and tray tables. With new and deadlier viruses and bacteria emerging everyday, what do you need to know to avoid getting sick? 1. Superbugs are everywhere inside hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and even surgery centers.
