Be Prepared Having all your forms and information beforehand makes tax time easier and faster for everyone, but especially for investors. Gather all your Form 1099-Bs from brokerages, other tax forms (W-2s, other 1099s, etc.), plus any documentation about your transactions. If you’re still waiting for 1099s or other investment information, Dolmage recommends preparing as much of your return as possible now but wait to file until you receive it to avoid amending your return. DIY tax filing solutions often import transactions directly from brokerages or provided data files. TaxACT also offers a spreadsheet-style entry tool for Form 1099-Bs for fast entry and review of up to 2,000 transactions. Investors with a lot of transactions can also obtain Form 8949, Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets, from their brokerage or a service that generates the form. Simply submit it with your return. Double-check Your Form 1099s Depending on how long you’ve held the asset and where it originated, your Form 1099-B may not list your cost basis and date acquired. If your cost basis and acquisition date aren’t on your Form 1099-B, you still need to report it on your return. Without a cost basis, proceeds are taxed as a capital gain. Verify Your Cost Basis The cost basis is the purchase price of an asset adjusted for stock splits, dividends, return of capital distributions and any other basis adjustments. Using the correct cost basis is key to accurately reporting and calculat-
ing a capital gain versus a loss, the difference between the asset’s sales proceeds and the cost basis. Even if your cost basis is reported on Form 1099-B, check your investment records to verify that it’s correct. Your reported amount is based on the information available to your brokerage, which may not include all the data needed to calculate the true cost basis. For instance, the sale of certain employer stock options may be reported on your Form W-2 and Form 1099-B. If you don’t adjust your cost basis for this, your sale may be taxed as ordinary income and as a capital gain. To report adjustments to cost basis amounts on your tax return, enter the adjusted amounts and an adjustment code for each that explains the reason for the change. Purchase Date Matters Assets held for more than 12 months are considered long-term and benefit from reduced capital gains tax rates of 0 percent, 15 percent and 20 percent based on your tax bracket. Conversely, short-term gains for assets held for less than 12 months are taxed at ordinary rates. Verify the asset’s purchase date before selecting the short-term or longterm reporting category for the transaction on your tax return. (Remember, the date acquired may not be on Form 1099-B.) Incorrectly reporting the term may result in overstating or understating your total tax liability. Home shows have also increased their value because a good homeshow will do the research to find companies considered the best in the home improvement industry and the will all be under one roof. Let’s take a snapshot of where the remodeling industry is headed from cost versus value It comes to a simple question: does remodeling pay for itself through increased home value? 2013/2014 Cost vs. Value: Remodeling Pays Off Big Time – Again Home improvement projects across the board give homeowners a return on their investment when it comes time to sell. As existing-home sales and home prices make remarkable strides upward nationwide, remodeling projects are also continuing to make a big comeback. For the second year in a row, Remodeling magazine’s Cost Versus Value Report saw an increase in home-improvement dollars recouped when the home was sold. Trends This trend signals an end to the long slide in the cost-value ratio, which began to decline in 2006 and didn’t begin its rebound until last year. In 2014, the cost-value ratio stood at 66.1%, a jump of 5.5 points over 2013 year, the largest increase since 2005.
The cost-value ratio expresses resale value as a percentage of construction cost. When cost and value are equal, the ratio is 100 percent; when cost is higher than value, the ratio is less than 100 percent; and when value is higher than cost, the ratio exceeds 100 percent.) Significantly, for the first time in four years, improved resale value of residential housing has more of an influence in the cost-value ratio than construction costs. The situation began to change in 2013, when lower costs were mainly responsible for across-the-board improvement in the cost-value ratio. While this was good news for the remodeling market, costs remained volatile and housing values had yet to stabilize. The most positive sign in this year’s data, rising resale value is driving the overall market improvement. Seeking local information regarding the home-improvement market, I talked with John Pravato, owner of the Rio Rancho Home and Remodeling Show, which is returning this March 28 and 29 after a four-year absence. “In recent years, we’ve worked to make our home shows are more valuable for homeowners by researching the companies we invite to participate. Screening For Lung Cancer May Help Heavy Smokers
W
hile lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, sometimes, the most common type—nonsmall cell lung cancer—can be cured if it is found early enough.
are greater for people who are not at high risk for lung cancer. For example, people are exposed to a small amount of radiation during a CT scan. Repeated exposure to this radiation can actually cause cancer in healthy people. Also, people at lower risk are more likely to have a false-positive test result (a test result that shows a person has a disease when he or she does not). Falsepositive results can cause anxiety and can lead to follow-up tests and surgeries that aren’t beneficial and have their own significant risks. In addition, screening is not beneficial for people who would be unable (because of poor health) or unwilling to undergo treatment for lung cancer. Treatment involves surgery to remove the cancerous part of the lung.
More than 200,000 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer each year. Smoking is the single largest risk factor and is responsible for about 85 percent of lung cancer cases in the United States. The more a person smokes over time, the more likely it is that he or she will get the disease. The risk of lung cancer also increases with age, with most people developing the condition after age 55. The most important way to prevent lung cancer is to stop smoking and limit exposure to tobacco smoke.
Before Screening, Quit Smoking
For heavy smokers who have not been able to quit or who smoked for a long time before quitting, there is now evidence that screening can prevent a large number of lung cancer-related deaths. Screening is important because lung cancer has no symptoms in its early stages. Most cases of lung cancer are not detected until a person has symptoms, usually after the disease is already at an advanced stage. Who Should Be Screened? The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (Task Force) now recommends yearly lung cancer screening using low-dose computed tomography (also known as a CT scan) for people who are at high risk for lung cancer. People are considered to be at high risk if they: • Are between 55 and 80 years old • Have a history of smoking for 30 “pack-years” or more • Are either a current smoker or quit within the past 15 years. Pack-years are determined by multiplying the number of packs (which typically contain 20 cigarettes) smoked daily by the number of years a person has smoked. For example, you would have a 30 pack-year history if you smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years, two packs a day for 15 years, or half a pack a day for 60 years. The goal of screening for lung cancer is to detect the cancer at an early stage so that it can be successfully treated. There are other types of tests that also screen for lung cancer, but the Task Force found that low-dose CT scans are the most accurate for finding cancer early. Why Not Screen Everyone? Not everyone should be screened for lung cancer, not even all smokers. This is because there are some risks from low-dose CT scans and these

It’s important to remember that getting screened for lung cancer is not an alternative to quitting smoking. Quitting smoking is still the best way to reduce your risk of developing and dying from lung cancer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers a toll-free quit line ((800) QUIT-NOW) and a text messaging service (Text QUIT to 47848) to help you get started. See your primary care clinician to discuss ways to help you quit smoking if you still smoke. How To Get Screened The Affordable Care Act requires private insurance companies to cover the cost of lung cancer screening for eligible enrollees, without a co-payment. Additionally, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently decided to cover yearly lung cancer screening for people with Medicare who are between 55 and 77 years old and are otherwise considered “high risk” as defined by the Task Force. If your clinician thinks screening is right for you, check with your health insurance company to see if the cost of screening would be covered and what requirements need to be met for coverage. Then, work with your primary care clinician to find an accredited imaging facility that has experts who are experienced and knowledgeable about lung cancer screening. Recommendations To Protect Your Health The Task Force is an independent group of national experts in prevention and evidence-based medicine. The aim of its work is to evaluate and identify critical preventive health services that primary care professionals can perform. Blood glucose testing is one of the most common tests performed on patients in hospitals. It is used to help monitor hospital patients by detecting high or low blood glucose.
