hile winter, with its cold temperatures and extreme weather, can be an isolating time for many, it can be particularly tough on seniors. When driving conditions deteriorate and roads are slippery, many seniors don’t feel safe enough to venture out of their homes. Others just don’t like the cold and often forgo regular activities and visits with family and friends that involve going outdoors.

However, regular social and cognitive activities are necessary for maintaining optimal health and independence and are often key to fighting through the winter blues. That’s why it can be important for seniors to find innovative ways to maintain a safe, consistent level of activity all year-round. Staying connected and active can contribute to seniors’ well-being and mental sharpness.

They can come equipped with advanced locating and fall detection technology that adds extra reassurance that help will be there when and if needed. Additionally, there are mobile response apps that seniors can use to connect to the same emergency call centers offered through traditional and mobile medical alert services. With the added confidence from these technologies, seniors can feel empowered to get out of the house and engage in the activities they love to do, even during the winter months. Keeping Kids Connected During Long Winter Days

here’s good news for parents looking for a positive way to keep their kids entertained when there is no school. There is an affordable way to keep kids connected to the Internet.
• PBS Kids (pbskids.org): Find learning games associated with your favorite PBS Kids characters such as Clifford, Curious George and The Cat in the Hat.
From snow days to holiday breaks, kids will be off from school often over the next few months. And with the inclement weather, this means they are inside, itching for something to do. Instead of watching TV or fighting with siblings, using the Internet can be a more interactive, productive choice for kids of all ages. Unfortunately, about 30 percent of Americans, many of whom live below the poverty line, don’t have Internet access in their homes. To help, Comcast is offering a lowcost broadband adoption program called Internet Essentials. Internet Essentials offers families with at least one child eligible for the National School Lunch Program Internet for $9.95 a month; the option to buy a laptop or desktop computer for less than $150; and access to digital literacy training online, in person or in print. With a service such as this, kids can connect to fun online educational activities for free while they are off from school, and they can keep up with their assignments and stay connected to teachers and classmates. This way, they are not only keeping busy, but they are learning. The 7 Things You Should Know About Cervical Cancer 1. All women are at risk. Unless you have had your cervix removed for noncancerous conditions (like fibroids), you can develop cervical cancer, which is caused by abnormal cell growth. 2. Black women with cervical cancer die at a higher rate. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, black women have more than twice the mortality rate of white women. Unfortunately, most of these deaths occur in women who have never been screened or have not been screened in the past five years. The Black Women’s Health Imperative advocates that when found early, cervical cancer is highly curable. 3. Your Pap test screens for cervical cancer. The Pap test is the most effective way to find and prevent cervical cancer. In addition to screening for cervical cancer, the Pap test looks for cell changes (precancers) that can be treated before escalating to cancer. Your health and peace of mind will more than make up for the minor effort it takes to get tested. 4. HPV is almost always the cause. The human papillomavirus (HPV) has over 150 strains and is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact—usually through sex. HPV can infect cells, causing genital warts and even cervical cancer. If you are found to have HPV, don’t panic. HPV is actually quite common—most women (and men) will
have it at some point. Usually, HPV is nonthreatening and goes away on its own; however, it can cause cervical and other types of cancers. Your doctor can test for HPV during your exam. 5. There is an HPV vaccine but... The HPV vaccine has been shown to reduce the risk of HPV in women under 27 when administered properly; however, the vaccine only protects against the two most common strains that cause HPV and genital warts. Even if you have been vaccinated, you should still see your doctor for routine Pap tests. 6. You may not have symptoms. Women with cervical cancer may not show any signs early on. In more advanced stages, cervical cancer can cause abnormal bleeding or discharge from the vagina, such as bleeding after sex. If you have any of these symptoms, you should see your doctor. 7. Smokers have a higher risk. Women who smoke cigarettes are more susceptible to developing cervical cancer. Data from Pew Research indicate that mobile Internet access is even more common among American teens than adults. People are increasingly connected digitally—and it’s altering the way we live. As a report published by the University of Michigan puts it, “The fabric of real communities in American life is slowly being rebuilt with virtual threads in online communities. Today, our individual identities exist within two types of communities—the physical and the virtual. Our desire for connection sets up our media experiences in today’s world as proxies for ‘community,’ providing the depth of experience and interpersonal connections we crave.” The United States Department of State says, however, “Technologies can facilitate social change, but not create it.
