Cancer Survivors: Ask Your Health Care Provider For A ‘Survivorship Care Plan’
M
ore than 14 million Americans living today have had cancer. Often called “survivors,” individuals with a history of cancer often experience great relief and possess a new lease on life, having successfully faced a serious disease. Survivors may also encounter anxiety, fearing re-occurrence or complications from treatment. During active treatment, people with cancer are often actively engaged in their cancer care and enjoy a sense of support and security from the regular interactions they have with their oncology team. When treatment ends, however, the biggest question for cancer survivors is often “What should I do now?” The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the world’s leading professional organization representing physicians who care for people with cancer, believes it is critically important for cancer survivors to receive proper follow-up care and ongoing health care support. ASCO has developed the “Survivorship Care Plan,” a new tool for survivors and health care professionals to discuss and record the details of the cancer diagno-
sis, the treatments received, possible late complications or side effects of treatments, the need for future checkups and cancer tests, and suggestions for maintaining and improving survivors’ health. “At the end of their treatment, patients with cancer should expect to receive a survivorship care plan, but if they don’t get one, they should ask for one from their doctor or nurse,” said Deborah K. Mayer, Ph.D., RN, chair of the ASCO Survivorship Care Plan Working Group and professor in the School of Nursing and Director of Cancer Survivorship at University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. “The ASCO tool is designed to help health care professionals get survivorship care plans into the hands of patients.” Download the survivorship care plan on ASCO’s patient website, Cancer.Net, and find further information for cancer survivors at www.cancer.net/survivorship. -(NAPSI)

Spring Cleaning? Don’t Forget the Ducts
T
he National Air Duct Cleaners Association was formed in 1989, as a non-profit association of companies engaged in the cleaning of HVAC systems. Its mission is to promote source removal as the only acceptable method of cleaning and to establish industry standards for the association. NADCA’s rule of thumb for consumers is that if your ducts look dirty, they probably are, and that dirty HVAC systems should be inspected by a reputable, certified HVAC professional. First and foremost, air ducts should not be left off your spring cleaning to-do list. Indoor Air Quality Indoor air quality is one concern homeowners have when they decide to investigate air duct cleaning. In a typical six-room home, up to 40 pounds of dust is created annually through everyday living. Your heating and cooling system is like the lungs of your home. The system takes air in and breathes air out. Dander, dust and chemicals are the contaminants pulled into the HVAC system and re-circulated five to seven times per day, on average. Over time, this re-circulation causes a build-up of contaminants in the duct work.

While dirty ducts don’t necessarily mean unhealthy air in your home, they may be contributing to larger health issues or harboring contaminants that could cause serious problems for people with respiratory health conditions, autoimmune disorders or some environmental allergies. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the life of your system. Eight Mistakes To Avoid On Your Tax Return
aking mistakes on your taxes can cost you both money and time but, fortunately, many of the most common errors can be easily avoided. These eight tips can help: 1. Procrastinating. Start your tax return as soon as possible. You may need to request information from your employer or financial institutions. If you experienced life changes, you may need a bit more time to claim additional deductions and credits. 2. Rushing leads to errors. Chances are, you won’t regret taking a little extra care on your tax return, one of the most important financial transactions you do each year. If you owe taxes, you can still file now and schedule electronic payment anytime before April 15. 3. Not reporting all your income. Employers send Form W-2s, but what if you earn extra money doing freelance photography or writing? You may not get a Form 1099 for that work, but you still have to report the income on your tax return. “This type of income is reported on IRS Schedule C as part of your Form 1040,” explained TaxACT spokesperson Jessi Dolmage. “DIY solutions like TaxACT make it easy—just answer simple questions about your income and expenses. The program will take care of the calculations and tax forms while helping you get all your deductions to maximize your refund.” 4. Not taking full advantage of IRA contribution limits. IRA (Individual Retirement Account) contributions are one of the few tax benefits you can still take advantage of through April 15. you’re age 50 or older) are tax-deductible. The same contribution limits apply to Roth IRAs as long as your modified adjusted gross income is below $114,000 ($181,000 for joint filers). Incomes above that are subject to a reduced deduction. 5. Miskeying SSNs or using “unofficial” names. Believe it or not, these are among the most common reasons tax returns are rejected. The IRS verifies Social Security numbers and names with the Social Security Administration when processing returns. Importing last year’s tax return information helps, but always double-check that the numbers and names exactly match Social Security cards. 6. Not double-checking bank account and routing numbers. Whether you’re getting a refund or you owe Uncle Sam, double-check account numbers. Just one or two incorrect digits can mean a lost refund or penalties and interest because the IRS didn’t receive your payment. 7. Not e-filing. Electronic filing is the fastest, most accurate way to file your tax return. Advanced encryption and transmission methods keep your information secure. The IRS typically processes e-filed returns within 48 hours, typically within minutes, which means you’ll have your refund sooner. For homeowners who have gone through especially harsh weather (a shout-out to the Northeast and New England seems to be in order), the spring thaw that occurs from record-breaking snowfall can result in irreparable water damage if not taken care of properly.
Seek Thermal, a California-based technology company, has created a thermal camera that works with a free app to turn invisible heat energy into an image that can be seen from your phone or tablet. This, the company says, allows homeowners to easily expose and record water damage, so something can be done about it before having to make costly repairs.

Is It Sarcoidosis? Don’t Rule Out This Often Misdiagnosed Condition
M
ost people have never heard of sarcoidosis, but this complex condition has actually been acknowledged for more than 150 years. Wellknown people who have been impacted by the condition include Bernie Mac, Reggie White, Evander Holyfield, Tisha Campbell-Martin and Daisy Fuentes. Although anyone can develop sarcoidosis, it is most common among people between the ages of 20-40. Often, the symptoms of sarcoidosis are similar to cancer or arthritis, and people may undergo unnecessary treatment before finding out their actual diagnosis. It’s stories like this that inspired the CHEST Foundation of the American College of Chest Physicians and the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research (FSR) to team up and launch “Sarcoidosis: Seek Answers. Inspire Results,” a campaign that encourages people living with sarcoidosis to take a proactive role in their treatment. “While sarcoidosis is not fully understood, it’s important to consider it if symptoms are present,” said Doreen J. Addrizzo-Harris, MD, FCCP, codirector of the Pulmonary/Critical Care Faculty Group Practice at NYU Langone Medical Center, pulmonary section chief at Tisch Hospital in New York City, and trustee of the CHEST Foundation board. “The educational resources available at www.chestnet.org/sarcoid encourage people living with sarcoidosis to openly discuss options with their doctor, then follow their unique treatment plan.” Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease wherein the immune system goes into overdrive, causing cells to group together into clumps called

granulomas. When too many granulomas form on an organ, they can interfere with its function. Though sarcoidosis can impact any organ, the lungs and lymph nodes are affected in more than 90 percent of cases. With good medical care, most cases are not severe and do not cause lasting damage to the body. However, 30-40 percent of people with sarcoidosis have a persistent condition that may require treatment to control symptoms. Common symptoms include: 1. Fever, fatigue, weight loss, night sweats and an overall feeling of ill health. 2.
A persistent cough, shortness of breath and chest pain.
3. Enlarged lymph nodes -- most often located in the neck, but they can also be under the chin, in the armpits or the groin area. Other signs may include skin changes (such as painful or red, raised bumps), joint pain or eye sensitivity.
