he holidays are often a joyous time to celebrate with family and friends, but for individuals who struggle with mental health issues, this time of year often brings unwelcome stress, anxiety and depression. In fact, a recent mental health survey by the College of Social Sciences at the University of Phoenix® reported that 97 percent of Americans believe mental health issues to be a serious problem in the United States.

According to the survey, more than three in five (62 percent) of all respondents said they have experienced a mental health issue, such as anxiety (42 percent), grief (38 percent), a mood disorder such as depression (37 percent), marital/relationship issues (36 percent) or family relationship issues (34 percent).

“Most Americans recognize the benefits of mental health counseling but may be reluctant to seek help due to financial constraints, lack of comfort level with a counselor or the inability to determine whether the treatment will be effective,” said Dr. Stephen Sharp, a licensed counselor and dean in the College of Social Sciences, University of Phoenix.
3. Know your community resources and referral points, and be willing to listen. Oftentimes, just voicing your experiences can be therapeutic if the listener is compassionate and understanding.

Don’t forget that all funerals are unique and each family grieves differently. • Educate yourself: There are multiple online resources available for consumers. The more you know, the less likely you are to emotionally overspend during a time of loss. • Speak up: Many families sweep death under the rug and find themselves overwhelmed when it comes time to make difficult decisions. The Disease X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, or XLHED, is the disease and the company is Edimer Pharmaceuticals. Farmers Growing Green With Energy
O
ne of the nation’s newest sources of electricity comes from...animal waste? It sounds futuristic, but it’s a reality for farmers like Luke, Mike and Tony Brubaker, who run a herd of 975 dairy cows and 800 young stock. Back in 2009, milk prices were down, so the Brubakers looked into other profit-making opportunities. They soon began converting cow manure, via an on-farm digester machine, into enough electricity to power 150-200 homes. But they didn’t stop there—solar panels were added atop their heifer barn and broiler house to create additional thousands of kilowatts of electricity every month.
Act of 2014 offers local grants for farmers and rural businesses to develop and improve renewable energy sources. And the latest Census of Agriculture shows that farmers are indeed harnessing the power of renewable energy—more than 57,000 U.S. farms reported producing renewable energy on their farm in 2012. This is more than double the number reported in 2007. If you’ve taken a road trip lately, you’ve likely spotted wind turbines peppering the rural landscape. More than 9,000 U.S. farms house wind turbines, according to the latest Census of Agriculture, in addition to more than 36,000 farms with solar panels.
Around the country, farmers are harnessing alternative energy sources, including wind, sun, water and energy crops, in addition to providing resources for renewable energy through ethanol and biodiesel. These technologies not only benefit the environment, they also allow farmers to realize cost savings that can be passed down to customers.
Farmers like Brubaker provide food for a rapidly growing population while working toward continuous improvements—not an easy feat, but a necessary one. It’s also one that Brubaker shares with consumers by hosting tours of his facility and making frequent presentations to students and foreign farm groups.
Every five years, USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) conducts the Census of Agriculture to paint the most accurate picture of farming today. Data from the latest census, released in 2014, reveal that farmers are on the leading edge of adopting renewable energy technology.
“We’re passionate about sustainability and are always looking at how we can better use the resources on the farm,” Brubaker says. “Growing a crop, feeding it to the animals, making it into milk or food then converting that animal byproduct into energy to power the operation is a complete cycle.”
The USDA administers programs to help farmers participate in renewable energy production, which is how Brubaker began. The Agriculture

Expert Advice on Enticing Kids to Eat Their Fruits and Vegetables
A
s many parents know, kids can be picky eaters. And according to a recent study, moms are concerned that their kids aren’t eating enough fruits and vegetables. “We found that moms understand the health benefits of fruits and vegetables but struggle to get their family to eat them,” said Elizabeth Pivonka, Ph.D., RD, president and CEO, Produce for Better Health Foundation. “Today, Americans are currently eating less than half of the recommended cups of fruits and vegetables each day.” To better understand the situation, the Produce for Better Health Foundation conducted its annual research on “Moms’ Attitudes and Beliefs Related to Fruit & Vegetable Consumption.” The study found: • Ninety percent agree that a diet that includes fruits and vegetables may help their child avoid obesity. • Ninety percent agree that a diet with more fruits and vegetables promotes their family’s overall health and may prevent disease, now and in the future. • Ninety percent agree that a diet that includes fruits and vegetables may help promote well-being of mind and body. • Eighty-nine percent agree that more fruits and vegetables plus more physical activity means the family can be at its best. There’s been a steady improvement over time in the level of ease moms reported regarding their ability to access fruits and vegetables for their families at restaurants and quick-service restaurants.

Setting out a fruit bowl, having vegetables cut up and ready to eat in the refrigerator, and finding ways to hide produce in other foods are some of the ways to get more fruits and vegetables into a family’s diet. The research also found that kids tend to eat more produce when they are involved in the growing, selecting and preparing of food. To get kids more involved, Pivonka provided these tips: 1. Let kids get involved in planning meals for the week and challenge them to find ways to make sure a fruit and vegetable are included in each meal. Remember, canned, frozen and dried fruits or vegetables, in addition to fresh, are all great options! 2. Get kids involved in using produce to make juices or smoothies. It can be a fun activity for kids to use a blender or juicer to show them there are other ways to eat your fruits and vegetables. 3. Teach kids about produce that’s in season and how to select the best produce. Take them to a farmer’s market to talk with growers. This also provides a great opportunity to try new produce they didn’t know they enjoyed. 4. Starting a backyard garden can be a great way to get kids interested and involved. Monsanto, through its Seminis Home Garden division, is working to make growing backyard produce more accessible for busy families by creating seed varieties that are easy to grow.
