lthough the U.S. federal tax code has undergone over 4,600 changes since 2001, most changes are unlikely to affect the average taxpayer.
Unless you’re an accountant or tax lawyer, you don’t need to know the vast majority of tax law changes. However, you can maximize the benefits and minimize any negative effect of changes when you file your income tax return. “To avoid any surprises at tax time, do a dry run of your tax return each fall,” recommends TaxACT spokesperson Jessi Dolmage. “DIY tax programs are updated with the latest tax laws every fall. Just answer simple questions and the program will calculate your refund or liability as it currently stands so you can see what’s changed. The interview will also review credits and deductions you may still qualify for through Dec. 31.” You can use the tax preparation filing products to get early calculations of your taxes or use a tax calculator such as TaxACT’s at www.taxact. com/tax-calculator. Whether you do any year-end tax planning or wait until the filing deadline, here’s a list of key changes that could impact your federal tax return due April 15, 2015: • Personal and dependent exemptions increase to $3,950 per person. • The 2014 standard deduction is $6,200 for a single taxpayer and $9,100 for a head of household. The standard deduction for married couples filing jointly also increases to $12,400. • Several benefits have expired, including the tuition and fees deduction, educator expense deduction, deduction for mortgage insurance premiums, cancellation of some mortgage debt, nonbusiness energy property credit and state and local sales tax deduction. Congress is expected to vote on extending the tax breaks after the November 2014 elections. • If you purchased 2014 health insurance from the federal or a state-sponsored marketplace, you’ll receive Form 1095-A around January 31. The form will have the information you need to report on your tax return, including the premium tax credit. Simply enter the form information when

Your credit amount will be reconciled with your actual income and family size on your tax return. If your situation changed since applying for insurance, you may receive a larger refund or have to pay part of the credit back. • If you didn’t have minimum essential health insurance for three or more months in 2014 and don’t qualify for an exemption, you may pay a penalty. The shared responsibility payment is the higher of 1 percent of your 2014 income or $95 per adult and $47.50 per uninsured dependent under 18, up to $285 per family. Your tax program will ask simple questions to calculate your payment. If you qualify for an exemption, remember some require you to have a certificate number (ECN) for your tax return in order to avoid the shared responsibility payment. Know Your Family’s Risk Of A Rare Genetic Disorder And The Resources Available To Help You
here may be a rare genetic disorder in your family that you don’t even know about, but the good news is that a genetic counselor can provide the information, guidance and support to help you understand the chance of passing the condition to your children and options to help your child manage the condition. The Disease The condition is called hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED)—also known as anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome. It’s estimated that at least one in 5,000 to 10,000 newborns has it. Seventy-five to 85 percent of boys with HED have the X-linked recessive form called XLHED. The Signs Common symptoms of XLHED include a reduced ability to sweat, because babies affected by XLHED have no, or fewer than normal, sweat glands or they don’t sweat sufficiently. People with the disorder are missing or often have pointed teeth (hypodontia). They experience sparse and slow-growing hair on the head and body and also have drier than normal linings or membranes in the nose and mouth. In addition, breathing problems such as asthma, increased respiratory tract infections (colds, pneumonias, etc.) and scaly skin are common. How It’s Diagnosed A change in a gene called EDA may result in XLHED. This gene controls the production of a protein (a molecule the body needs for growth) that starts the development of skin, hair, nails, teeth, and sweat glands. However, when the gene is changed, there is not enough protein for typical development of these tissues and organs. XLHED is often diagnosed after birth or in early childhood based on several physical features. Diagnosis can also be made through family history and genetic testing. How It’s Inherited XLHED is caused by a change in a gene that is passed from parents to children on the X chromosome. Chromosomes are “messengers” that carry “instructions” (genes) to the body in cells. Women have two X’s; men have an X and a Y. A girl gets an X from each parent, a boy gets an X from his mom and a Y from his dad. Since the gene is only on the X chromosome, the daughters of a man affected by XLHED will all be carriers and his sons will not be affected. A woman with XLHED, or who is a carrier, may have some symptoms, but because women have two X
chromosomes, these may be less severe. There’s a 50 percent chance a woman with XLHED will pass the gene to a son who will be affected by XLHED and a 50 percent chance her daughter will be a carrier. Genetic Counseling It’s possible for prospective parents to be tested to see if they’re carriers, and this is most often done when there is a known family history of XLHED. Understanding the testing options available can be challenging. Genetic counseling is a discussion between a patient or family and a health care provider trained in genetics and communicating genetic and medical information to families. Families that talk to a genetic counselor gain a better understanding of the condition, their family history, test results, clinical trial opportunities and potential treatment options. Free genetic counseling services are available to families that have or suspect they have XLHED. The counseling is from InformedDNA, a phone-based, confidential, genetic counseling service. New Survey Reveals Knee Osteoarthritis Sufferers Make Daily Accommodations
t started with working fewer hours, staying home more and avoiding favorite pastimes like gardening and spending time with her family, including her grandchildren—anything to reduce the pain in her knees. These are just a few of the ways in which Rebecca Von Eiff, who suffered for years with painful knee osteoarthritis (OA), accommodated her life because of OA. And, according to the results of a recent survey, she’s not alone. The survey conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of DePuy Synthes Companies polled 668 U.S. adults aged 45 to 75 who have been diagnosed with OA, experience moderate to severe knee pain and have not had knee joint replacement. The survey found that more than half of respondents reported that, at least quite a bit of the time, they: • Avoid an activity that requires a great deal of walking (57 percent) • Avoid an activity that requires a great deal of standing (59 percent) • Avoid an activity that requires going up or down stairs (52 percent). “Finding ways to get through everyday life with minimal pain consumed me,” remembered Rebecca. “I was prescribed medication to help with the OA pain and then began getting cortisone shots regularly. Although these remedies helped some, the effect eventually wore off.” As an interior designer, Rebecca, 68, was used to being active during the day; but knee pain caused her to begin sitting on the arm of a couch to take the pressure off her knees and that grew into scheduling shorter visits to the design center to pick up samples. Everyday activities, like gardening

hile most motorists are fond of what’s known as that “new car smell,” there are some other specific odors that motorists should also be aware of.
4. The sweet smell of syrup may be a sign that your car is leaking engine coolant from a leaky component related to the car’s cooling system. Do not open the radiator cap when it is hot.
Identifying these suspect smells early on can help car owners be car care aware and avoid the hassle and expense of an unexpected breakdown.
5. The smell of burning carpet could be a sign of brake trouble and a safety hazard. Have your brakes checked right away, especially if this smell is happening during normal driving conditions.
The Car Care Council recommends a sniff test of your vehicle to identify any unusual smells, including the following six warning signs: 1. The smell of burnt rubber could be slipping drive belts or misplaced loose hoses that might be rubbing against rotating accessory drive pulleys. Do not reach in if the engine compartment is hot. 2. The smell of hot oil could mean that oil is leaking onto the exhaust system. To verify the leak, look for oil on the pavement or smoke coming from the engine area. 3. The smell of gasoline is likely the sign of a gas leak in some area of the vehicle such as a fuel injector line or the fuel tank. Any smell of fuel can result in a possible fire hazard, so immediate attention should be given.

If the smell of rotten eggs is coming from your vehicle, it could mean a problem with your catalytic converter or a poorly running engine causing the catalytic converter to become overloaded and fail due to meltdown. “When you smell any peculiar odor, you should not ignore it. Instead, bring your vehicle to a professional service technician that you trust to get an informed opinion on the nature of the odor,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. ere’s a job you more than likely would not want: storing, pumping, handling, transporting and applying livestock manure to farm fields. Believe it or not, there are hundreds of thousands of farmers, ranchers and custom applicators who perform this important and essential task every year across the U.S. Dairy, swine, beef and poultry producers must manage millions of tons of manure every year. This by-product of livestock production is actually a very rich resource. Manure serves as a natural fertilizer source packed with phosphorus and nitrogen—two elements essential to plant life. Put simply, without these elements to nourish crops, human civilization would cease to exist. Dave Eisentraut makes a living managing livestock manure. His company, Eisentraut Ag Services in Waldo, Wisconsin, handled 4 million gallons of manure a year when he first started the business 16 years ago. Today, the firm handles 200 million gallons of mostly dairy manure and some municipal sludge every year. This is a growth trajectory that any business would envy. Professional manure handling requires a huge investment in equipment, including drag hose systems, dredge trucks, pump and agitators, liquid flow meters and major-league, large tractors. Eisentraut often has several jobs simultaneously under way, with each project miles apart, pumping out and emptying dairy manure lagoons in one location while transporting and applying manure to fields in others. As lagoons fill up, it is a race against time to get rid of the manure in a full lagoon in order to increase capacity for future filling. “This past spring in Wisconsin, it literally rained for six or eight straight weeks,” Eisentraut says. “When it finally dried out, we had to hit the ground running, and we were still playing catch-up in late summer.”
One technology that Eisentraut uses to keep things moving is More Than Manure® (MTM®) Nutrient Manager. When added to in-ground manure pits and lagoons, MTM helps break up crusts and solids, making the manure easier to pump, transport and apply. The product also significantly reduces ammonia levels in the manure, taking some of the “stink” out of the job. “Manure must be agitated before it is pumped, and using MTM allows us to cut that agitation time by 50 percent to 70 percent, which saves operating expenses on fuel and equipment depreciation,” Eisentraut observes. Sam McKnight operates a 3,000-head hog facility and also custom applies more than 16 million gallons of manure annually to corn, soybeans, alfalfa and pastures in Afton, Iowa. He also uses MTM to make manure handling easier. “At some of our older hog facilities, you’ll have two or three feet of manure sludge at the bottom of the pits, which is thick, hard to agitate and lessens your pit capacity,” McKnight explains. “After the MTM treatment, the manure agitates better, and we’re able to stir it up so the pits can be drawn down completely.” Besides making the manure easier to agitate and pump, More Than Manure also provides some significant agronomic benefits when treated manure is applied to fields. MTM protects against phosphorus fixation and reduces nitrogen loss to the environment. “There are more of these nutrients available for plant uptake, and we’re able to get the best possible nutrient value out of the manure,” the hog producer and custom applicator says. “Compared to those fields where we used untreated manure, we’ve had some fields of corn that yielded 30 bushels per acre more where MTM-treated manure was applied.” More Than Manure and MTM are registered trademarks of Specialty Fertilizer Products (SFP), LLC.© 2014 SFP. Choosing an active manager that can outpace the broader markets can make a significant difference in how much money investors are able to accumulate for retirement—and how long their money will last in retirement, according to American Funds.
• The second scenario looked at what would have happened over the same period to a 65-year-old retiree who started with a $500,000 nest egg and invested in the same two portfolios. Assuming that retiree made an initial withdrawal of 5 percent of the principal from each portfolio and then increased that amount by 3 percent each year to account for inflation, the actively managed portfolio would have generated 5-7 percent more wealth in retirement.
“Low expenses and high manager ownership are critically important factors for investors to consider when they are searching for mutual funds that can help them achieve their investment objectives,” said Tim Armour, a portfolio manager and Chairman of the Management Committee at Capital Group. “Low expenses mean investors have more of their money working for them. High manager ownership means that fund managers are investing significant amounts of their own money in the portfolios they manage. They have ‘skin in the game’ and, not surprisingly, the funds have tended to provide better results.” The American Funds’ study provided two hypothetical scenarios that demonstrated the importance of identifying actively managed funds that can add value over the long term: • The first scenario looked at what would have happened had a 45-yearold invested $100,000 in January 1994 in two portfolios, with half of each devoted to large U.S. companies and half to large international firms. One portfolio consisted entirely of “passive” exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which are securities that track an index such as the Standard & Poor’s 500 or Dow Jones Industrial Average, but trade like stocks on an exchange. The other portfolio drew from the universe of 3,037 active equity mutual
American Funds emphasizes that the past results of mutual funds do not guarantee they will be similar in the future. Information on expense ratios and manager ownership is typically available on fund company websites (see www.americanfunds.com), as well as from independent research firms such as Morningstar or financial advisors. Investors who are relying on 401(k) plans for their retirement may want to review which mutual fund families are being offered through those plans, Armour said, suggesting that they specifically look at the funds’ expense ratios and manager ownership information. “There are a number of fund families—American Funds among them— that keep their costs relatively low and have portfolio managers who invest alongside their shareholders,” Armour said. “Rather than simply going along with the idea that passive investments are the only answer, investors would benefit from using these two screens.
