Many teachers say it’s not uncommon to find they have students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia in their classrooms. Fortunately, if they have not received tools or training in how to teach those students, teachers do have an ally they can rely on. Since 1948, national nonprofit Learning Ally has supported those who learn differently to ensure academic and lifelong success. In addition to being the world’s leading provider of human-narrated audiobooks for students with learning and visual disabilities, the organization has become a critical resource for parents, families and teachers.

Learning Ally recognizes that in order to address America’s overall reading and literacy problems, resources must be expanded to support millions of students who have dyslexia—the most common learning disability, affecting up to one in five individuals. With this in mind, Learning Ally delivers training sessions, webinars and technology equipping teachers to help students with dyslexia; and it has also built up networks of highly qualified tutors and specialists who can provide assistance for parents seeking help for their children.

years to accommodate her students. “We use Learning Ally for students who have a specific learning disability in reading, which could be dyslexia, and also students with cognitive delays or low reading skills,” Sabo says. “We have a group of students who have critical need of additional tools to help them in the classroom, so this is a really great program for us.”

For parents, Learning Ally also provides a vibrant community of support—online, on the phone and in person—to help them navigate the many challenges that come with raising a child with reading and learning issues.

Expanding In Ohio

Resources In Colorado An example of the contribution Learning Ally can make in a school setting can be seen in its Denver Public Schools program, where nearly 3,000 students in over 150 schools are receiving support. More than 50,000 audiobook pages have been read by students on mobile devices; thousands more pages are being read via PCs or Macs. Funded by a private donation through the Denver Foundation, the program’s goal is to reach over 5,000 students within the next year. Lauren Sabo, a multi-intensive special education teacher at Manual High School in Denver, has been using the program’s resources for over three

Since it was introduced into the reading program at Loveland Middle School in Ohio, use of Learning Ally has expanded into five of six schools across the district, and after only one year, 81 teachers are using the audiobooks with their students. Speech language pathologist Susan Mechler, who championed the program in the district, says, “Learning Ally makes students independent. It’s user friendly enough that they can access it themselves. It opens up their world.” To learn more, visit www.learningally.org/educators. -(NAPSI)

Doing Good With Wood

he next time you watch a home improvement show on TV and think “I can do that,” consider this: Through the Do Good With Wood Award program, you may earn national recognition for your creativity with wood combined with your community spirit.

The program is open to virtually anyone involved in wood finishing projects, through individual effort, DIY groups, craft or hobby groups, school classes, clubs or guilds.

Past winners include a guild that made wooden holiday toys, a shop class that created a campus gathering place by building benches from a fallen tree, and a group that made beds with storage, for children transitioning from shelters to foster home care.

The First Prize is $5,000 in cash, a workshop with wood finishing expert Bruce Johnson, and a supply of products valued at $1,000. The Second Prize is $2,000 in cash plus the products.

Celestial Bodies Come Alive At ‘Great Balls Of Fire’

ood news for anyone who has ever wondered how astronomers track objects like comets or what it would be like to study an asteroid belt up close. The new Great Balls of Fire interactive exhibit at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex lets you do that and much more, while discovering the risks that asteroids, comets and meteorites present to the planet. The exhibit explores how to keep track of near-Earth objects while examining the effects of possible impacts. It includes the Asteroid Encounter experience that lets you climb aboard a “spaceship” and blast off to the asteroid belt and Jupiter while compiling data about asteroids and comets. You can also explore what would happen if one of these celestial bodies were to hit close to home, determine Science Fact

or Science Fiction of Hollywood movie clips and take part in many other activities. While at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, you can also see the historic Atlantis spacecraft, a Saturn V moon rocket, IMAX 3-D space films, the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame and tour Kennedy Space Center itself. Further facts and fun can be found at (855) 378-0167 and www.KennedySpaceCenter.com. You may even win a bit of space all your own. Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and Astronomy magazine have partnered to host the Great Balls of Fire Sweepstakes, giving away a 9.6-pound authentic meteorite collectible and a space adventure trip for four to the Visitor Complex. You can enter the sweepstakes online at www. astronomy.com/KennedySweeps until midnight on Nov. 30. -(NAPSI)

Millennial Mortgage Myths Debunked: A New Light On Homeownership

T

he American Dream may have looked like more of a nightmare to the millions of millennials who entered the workforce in recent years—but there could be good news.

The reality is, with standard Fannie Maeand Freddie Mac-insured loans, a down payment as low as 5 percent is enough, while FHA-insured loans only require 3.5 percent.

This generation, born between 1981 and the early 2000s, has a desire to pursue passion over traditional expectations. Dreams of white picket fences have been replaced by a strong desire to invest in the future. This shift, however, means many millennials pay rent instead of a mortgage.

3. My credit score is too low: With the stresses of credit card debt and student loans, millennials often struggle to maintain a desirable credit score. Fortunately, several programs, including the FHA mortgage, offer favorable credit score minimums. 4. The process is complicated and confusing: With their busy lives, millennials often assume the process of buying a home is too burdensome. Mortgage lenders today are making it as seamless as possible through technology, accessibility and mobile apps such as MyQL by Quicken Loans, the nation’s second largest retail mortgage lender, which allows clients to upload supporting documents and check the status of their loan online, anytime.

“Millennials have been swayed to believe that homeownership means a financial burden and stress,” said mortgage lender Joel Gurman. “The reality is our current housing market, paired with the financial opportunities made possible by generationally low interest rates, have opened up homeownership to many people and have actually proven renting to be an expensive and unnecessary burden.” Here are five mortgage myths and actualities for millennials: 1. Buying a home is more expensive than renting: Unlike rent money, a mortgage payment goes toward ownership. Home prices have stabilized recently and rates remain near record lows, making payments quite affordable while gaining valuable equity. 2. I need a larger payment: Millennials often assume their limited years’ worth of savings won’t equal a large enough down payment on a home.

5. Homeowners must take on a 30-year payment: Thirty years can seem overwhelming for the millennial with a lifestyle fueled by the ability to be free. In reality, many lenders offer terms ranging from eight to 30 years, for as much flexibility as desired. Of the positive outlook for millennials, Gurman adds, “The future of our housing economy looks bright for millennials looking to re-evaluate their current financial hopes and dreams.” -(NAPSI)
