A “True” Celebration of Winter T
he first chair lifts in New Mexico began turning last Saturday at Sipapu Ski Resort, marking the start of the winter snow sports season in the state. And to gear up, the New Mexico Tourism Department is wrapping a warm hat and scarf around the “New Mexico True” brand with its first ever winter-specific ad campaign. “Almost a quarter of our overnight visitors come to New Mexico during the winter,” said Tourism Cabinet Secretary Monique Jacobson. “Through our winter “New Mexico True” ad campaign, we hope to make more skiers, snowboarders and families aware of the exceptional winter adventures they will find here.” The campaign aims to charm potential winter visitors with stunning “New Mexico True” advertising that includes cable TV, in-cinema, inairport, print, and digital media targeted at fly market travelers. Cable ads will air in Dallas-Ft. Worth and Phoenix in October and November with print scheduled in AFAR, Outside Magazine and Texas Monthly in October. As part of NMTD’s partnership with Southwest Airlines, print ads will appear every month in Southwest’s in-flight magazine, along with a targeted digital and email component. The Department is spending $800,000.00 on the October to February campaign. NMTD introduced “New Mexico True” in April of 2012 and the campaign has seen two summers of successful ads. “True” has caught on throughout the state, with 15 communities already adopting the “New Mexico True” brand as their own, and more communities ready to join them. Ride the Rail Runner on a Holiday Adventure to Santa’s Village
O
n December 14th – the public is invited to attend a new holiday event brought to you by the New Mexico Rail Runner Express. As in year’s past, Santa will be riding the train from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. But this year, the train will arrive at Santa’s Village in the Santa Fe Railyard. People will be greeted with a whole host of holiday activities including miniature train rides, an arts & crafts workshop, reindeer games, hot cocoa and live entertainment. People in Santa Fe can just visit the Railyard between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Or those from the south can board the New Mexico Rail Runner Express with Santa Claus on Train #702 in Downtown Albuquerque at 9:06 a.m. The public is asked to bring their own cameras for photos as Santa makes his way through the train. Also onboard, will be designated areas where train crews and volunteers will be reading holiday stories to interested children. “This is a fun opportunity for people to experience what the holiday offers aboard the New Mexico Rail Runner Express”, says Dewey Cave, Executive Director for the Mid-Region Council of Governments. “Having Santa’s Village at the end of the journey this year adds something to an event that has grown into a popular holiday tradition.” Food Drive to Benefit the Santa Fe Food Depot As part of the holiday event, passengers are asked to bring a canned food
item to donate to the Santa Fe Food Depot. Donation barrels will be placed in Santa’s Village at the Santa Fe Railyard. People Who Are Blind Equip The Military
M
any are surprised when they learn of the contributions that people who are blind make to both this country’s economy and armed forces.
For example, when the United States entered World War II, the American industrial base was in many cases staffed by people who were blind. They produced millions of the products used by the military both during the war and since then.
“People who are blind have been meeting the exacting specifications of the U.S. military for 75 years and counting,” said Kevin Lynch, NIB president and CEO. “There’s no stronger evidence of the impressive skills and abilities of this largely untapped talent pool.” - (NAPSI)
National Industries for the Blind (NIB), the nation’s leading employment resource for people who are blind, understands the capabilities of people who are blind and has helped thousands actively participate in the workforce, advance their careers and lead independent lives. This mission is important because 70 percent of working-age Americans who are blind, some of whom are military veterans, are not employed. A cornerstone of NIB’s success with creating jobs for people who are blind has been its relationship with federal customers, including the U.S. military. People who are blind working at NIB and its nationwide network of nonprofit agencies have equipped members of the military with mission-critical supplies and equipment for generations. They have also delivered a variety of mission support services to enhance military operations. During World War II, people who are blind manufactured 21 million mops, 41 million pillowcases and 17 million mailbags for the military. Today, people who are blind manufacture high-quality gear for the military including helmet covers, helmet pads, hydration systems, ammunition pouches and combat uniforms. Additionally, military customers can find a variety of other products made by people who are blind, including office supplies, computer accessories and hardware, at 150 Base Supply Center stores located on federal
or military installations across the country.
