“Proactivity and public cooperation are huge components of mosquito prevention,” said Cindy Mannes, vice president of public affairs at the National Pest Management Association. “Homeowners play an important role in helping to reduce mosquito populations and can work to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds throughout the season.” Fortunately, there are several important measures the American public can take in protecting against the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. The NPMA is urging homeowners to help in eliminate mosquito breeding grounds on their properties and practice vigilance in wearing proper attire to protect against bites: * Remove all sources of stagnant water. Standing water can be found in areas such as gutters, buckets, flowerpots and bird baths. Mosquitoes only need 1/2 inch of standing water to breed, so it is essential to minimize these areas to reduce offspring.

* Wear an insect repellent containing DEET or another EPA-registered ingredient to help prevent mosquito bites. The NPMA, in partnership with the CDC, developed an instructional video on how to properly apply insect repellent. * Minimize outside activity between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. Also take proactive measures during the day to protect against daytime biters like the Asian tiger mosquito, the main carrier of Zika. * When outdoors, wear long-sleeve shirts, long pants, socks and closed-toe shoes. * When hosting guests outside, keep the air moving. Using a fan where you and your guests may lounge makes it less likely mosquitoes will land on you. These pests are not strong fliers, so circulating air can make an outside gathering more pleasant. By following these tips and actively working to prevent mosquitoes on the home front, you will help reduce the risk of you and your family getting bitten by mosquitoes this season. -NewsUSA

Before putting the pedal to the metal, there are a few things travelers can do to prepare for a worry-free and fun family road trip. Moisture-damaged homes, regardless of make, model or age, are susceptible to termite infestations. Termites are capable of chewing through wood, flooring and wallpaper undetected. These “silent destroyers” can’t be eradicated with do-it-yourself measures, and cause more than $5 billion in property damage annually, costs not typically covered by homeowners insurance. How to Identify Termites Termite-spotting likely occurs in spring as they build new colonies for mating and nourishment. As colonies mature, winged termites appear around lights of windows and doors. After mating, termites create nearby colonies, spreading the infestation and disappearing into structures. While homeowners may see termites, they can mistake them for flying ants. Termites have distinct body types characterized by straight waists, straight antennae and two sets of wings equal in size. Misidentifying termites could delay treatment and cause structural property damage. Homeowners should be on the lookout for mud tubes on the base of their house, soft wood that sounds hollow when tapped, darkening or blistering of wood structures, small feces piles resembling sawdust near a termite
nest and discarded wings near doors or on windowsills. Prevention Tips If your home is currently termite-free, you should still take preventative steps to avoid becoming a termite magnet in the future. Most importantly, eliminate or reduce moisture in and around the home, which termites need to thrive. Below are things you can do to help prevent infestations in your home: * Divert water away from the foundation by installing properly functioning downspouts, gutters and splash blocks. * Reduce humidity in crawl spaces with proper ventilation. * Trim vines, hedges and other vegetation so they don’t block vents. * Remove old form boards, grade stakes, tree trunks and roots nearby. * Maintain 18 inches between soil and any wood portions of your home. * Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house and 5 inches off the ground. * Routinely inspect your home’s foundation for signs of termite damage. The ABCs Of ESAs: What Parents Need To Know

mproved student achievement and higher graduation rates are not as hard to achieve as one might think. They could become a reality with one simple policy: educational choice. Robust parental choice in education is an idea that has taken root in more communities in the U.S. than ever before, and education savings accounts (ESAs) are the best mechanism to date for funding customized learning for students. These accounts allow families to completely tailor their children’s educational experience by funding students instead of physical school buildings and letting that funding follow children to any education provider of choice. This gives parents access to options that meet their children’s unique learning needs. For example, in Arizona, parents can withdraw their children from public or charter schools and 90 percent of the funds the state would have spent on them is deposited into an ESA (known in Arizona as an Empowerment Scholarship Account). The funding can go to several education providers at once, an option that could become increasingly important as online learning proliferates. This level of customization helps bring American education into the 21st century and can ensure that no child is relegated to the limited effectiveness of a monopolistic system. Parents can also “roll over” unused funds from year to year. ESAs are the only educational choice policy to date that affords consideration of “opportunity costs,” which encourage families to pursue the best education for the best value to maximize their ESA dollars. A recent study by the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice—a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization—discovered that when parents are able to choose where their children go to school, they’re happier with the entire experience. School choice also leads to increased academic achievement, graduation rates and student safety. In addition, the foundation says, educational choice options put competitive pressure on public school systems to improve and to meet the needs of students or risk losing pupils—and money.
