Encryption - Why It Matters to You
M
uch ado has been made about encryption lately. And on some level, you probably understand it. Sort of.
You might know, for instance, that the FBI and Apple have tangled over it. (Apple won.) Most large companies like Google and Facebook support Apple’s position. And that encryption keeps your “stuff” safe from prying eyes. The problem is that the idea of privacy is just that these days -- an idea. “The way technology is woven into our daily lives, you can’t do without it,” Amy Danker, an employee at Epic Wines and Spirits, told the Oakland Tribune in a recent interview. “So what’s your other option? Are you gonna go back to a pager? I just assume that all my private information is already available through my IP ad-dress. You don’t even think privacy exists, because it doesn’t anymore, right?” Natalie Plotnikova agrees, saying the arm of the law is getting too long. “I don’t really like it,” Plotnikova told the Oakland Tribune as she waited to be cleared through security at the Federal Building in San Jose. “I don’t want the government to be able to use my phone to see my information.” This, say experts, is why encryption is necessary and important -especially in our current mobile, on-the-go environment, where everything you do is done on smartphones. By having your information scrambled so that only the person you are sending it to can see it, your privacy is maintained and your information remains secure. To that end, technology from a company called VirnetX -- which created an app called Gabriel, that uses encryption technology derived from a CIA national security program -- may be the answer.

Callers will then listen (one ear at a time) to a series of three-digit numbers with noise in the background. The test will get progressively more difficult, and the numbers harder to hear. The results are readily available, and those with slightly below or far below normal hearing levels are advised to seek a full evaluation by an audiologist.
The limited-time screening is being offered by MDHearingAid in partnership with the National Hearing Test. Unlike hearing exams offered in doctors offices, which use a series of beeps and hums at various frequencies and volumes to evaluate potential hearing loss, the telephone test uses speech and background noise. “There’s a very high correlation between how you hear speech in a noisy room and your level of hearing loss as measured with pure tones in an office setting,” Dr. Charles Watson, principal investigator for the National Hearing Test, told National Public Radio (NPR) in an interview. Watson says getting your hearing tested is the first step in determining whether you are a candidate for products that can help. “It’s a test intended to be very, very convenient,” Watson told NPR. The way it works is this: You log onto a website to receive a code, then call the phone number listed and input the code. The system will tell you

Sticking with Your Financial Plan

sailboat without a rudder will drift aimlessly with the tide. It cannot seek safe harbor from a storm or explore the open sea without a way to return to port. Too many investors and savers approach the task of building wealth without a rudder. They either lack a plan, or they have a plan that gets swept under the rug. Less than 20 percent of Americans have a comprehensive financial plan, according to one survey. In decades past, the guidance that investors often received was to get into a portfolio of stocks or equity mutual funds, and then just leave their money there for many years in hopes the portfolio might appreciate. With the exception of some major drops in the market, as seen in October 1987, there have been periods of a general rise in the price of stocks. In recent years, the stock market has been all over the map, with 2015 ending nearly flat. Investors today have even more reason to stick to a plan that is not just buy and hold, but one that conforms to the reality of the market as one component of a financial plan. However, before investing discretionary funds, it is critical to create a plan to put aside money and stop wasting it. It is also important is to decide why money is important to you, and what are your eventual goals for any savings or investment accounts? Like the sailboat, you have to have something you are steering toward. Without knowing what you are saving for or how much you may need, you are a boat adrift at the mercy of the tide. Create a balance sheet. What are you left with after you deduct obligations from assets? Have you been saving consistently or making frivolous purchases frequently that don’t have any utilitarian benefit? Being aware
of areas where money is wasted can lead to a change in behavior. Part of a financial plan is to know what you really have and what you can reasonably save. It includes creating priorities, goals and a method for accumulating wealth while providing an exit strategy. In addition to saving as much as a person reasonably can, paying off debt should be a concurrent activity. Besides a mortgage, any other debt, especially credit card debt, only defeats the benefits of growing wealth. Having an exit strategy is especially valuable with individual stocks. Put the emotions aside and determine that when a stock is in free-fall, there is a point where you will exit and reduce your downside risk. To help mitigate some of the risk of investing in individual stocks in the first place, using an index fund or an ETF can allow for more diversification and potentially spread your risk out over a large number of equities. Committing to these strategies is key. One way to remove the emotions of investing, or to get support in your effort to stick to a plan, is to get some guidance from a financial advisor. The advisor can take the emotion out of investing and help formulate a plan that makes sense for accumulating wealth and meeting many other financial goals. As with the sailboat, the most important aspect of meeting those financial goals is to have a rudder. Hold onto it tightly and chart a course toward achieving your aspirations without letting the winds of distraction blow you off course. here are teachers who truly inspire their students, and Albuquerque’s John Wayne Prentice attributes his career to the motivation of one of his educators.

“There were 13 students in my graduating class,” says Prentice, “and every one of them became an educator except for one who became a veterinarian.” He said that level of success was due to Minnie Anderson, a teacher he had in Greenfield, Okla.
Of course, this would not have happened if Prentice had not had the support of the various principals and PTA leaders who passed through Apache Elementary School over the years. The State Legislature also supported the collection, providing $25,000 in 1995 to pay for the mammal collection. NO OTHER PLACE
Prentice followed in her footsteps, working 39 years at Apache Elementary School off Copper in Albuquerque’s Northeast Heights before retiring in 2002. He remained available as a substitute until this spring. The next phase of retirement doesn’t mean Prentice won’t be reaching students anymore; it means they will just have to take tours of the school’s Apache Wildlife Collection rather than visit with him in the classroom. SCOUTS AND SENIORS, TOO
Apache’s students, naturally, are the ones who benefit the most. “Everyone who has contributed to the success of the collection wanted to have this stuff for the kids who will never see these any place else,” Prentice says. The school is in a part of the city with a high quotient of single-parent households, and the children don’t have the money for many of the field trips more affluent schools take, he says.
The Apache Wildlife Collection, the only one of its kind in the United States, contains more than 200 birds preserved through taxidermy, a skill Prentice taught himself and then used to teach biology to Apache’s students. Although more than 50 mammals also reside in the collection, Prentice did not create all the mounts. Instead, he relied on individuals with recognized skills in various species.
Wildlife conservation played a huge role in Prentice’s life. He started hunting and fishing as a child in Oklahoma, and continues to hunt turkeys and waterfowl as often as possible. He also spent 32 years as a Boy Scout leader with Troop 285 in Albuquerque, hiking and backpacking more than 3,000 miles. He lectured about wildlife for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service during four Boy Scout Jamborees.
Collecting this many animals – from rodents to raptors – required Prentice to launch a letter-writing campaign that reached wildlife agencies in all 50 states and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Refuges across the nation. Early on, Prentice says, he learned he had to have federal and state permits to possess the many migratory birds in the collection. “I still have the original permit from Ladd Gordon at New Mexico Game and Fish,” Prentice says.
“Working with all these kids and the wildlife has been a labor of love for me,” Prentice says. “I grew up in a little old town that didn’t even have a library. I tell these kids that reading is the key to everything.”
In addition to Apache Elementary students, scout troops, senior citizens and other Albuquerque residents have toured the school’s collection, which is housed in its own building on the campus. There was a time when the animals lined the hallways, but the

Safe Driving Pays: How One Teen Won $5,000 For A Digital Short Against Distracted Driving

mericans are mobile-first, but when driving, your number one priority should be safety. While our phones are a source for information and entertainment, there is no reason for anyone to manually text while driving. That’s the message that 17-year-old high school senior Claire Offenberger conveyed in her digital short public service announcement that won the CTIA Wireless Foundation 2016 Drive Smart contest. Ms. Offenberger’s national award winning video asked, “You wouldn’t drive blindfolded, why text?” In addition to winning the $5,000 grand prize scholarship, Ms. Offenberger visited Washington, D.C. and was presented with the award by U.S. Secretary of Transportation (DOT) Anthony Foxx, CTIA Wireless Foundation President and CTIA President and CEO Meredith Attwell Baker, and National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator Mark Rosekind. She also met with U.S. Rep. Mimi Walters (R-CA). In its second year, the Drive Smart contest provides educators with materials to help remind students (and adults) to not text while driving. With hundreds of students across the country developing creative anti-texting-while-driving ads, CTIA Wireless Foundation is helping educate Americans about the dangers of distracted driving. Together with CTIA and its members, America’s wireless companies support a three-sided approach to combat distracted driving—education, technology and legislation. Through industry-wide campaigns like Drive Smart and individual company initiatives, Americans know they should not text while driving. Technology developments from device manufacturers, wireless providers and apps and content providers include auto-replies to texts while driving and hands-free options. CTIA worked with the DOT, AAA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Conference of State Legislatures and other organizations by drafting model legislation for states that bans manual texting while driving. CTIA continues to encourage states
across the country to pass this important legislation. While one should never text while driving, it’s important to remember that wireless devices are fundamentally public safety tools so you can reach first responders and emergency personnel when needed. In fact, almost 300 wireless 911 calls are made every minute in the U.S. Driver distractions come in many forms, from passengers to eating to music. To combat distracted driving, follow these six rules: 1. Never manually text and drive. 2. Know and obey state and local laws on wireless device usage wherever you may drive. 3. Learn your wireless device’s and automobile’s features, such as voice activation and hands-free options. 4. Let the person you are speaking with know you’re driving; if necessary, suspend the call in heavy traffic or hazardous weather conditions. 5. Don’t take notes or look up phone numbers while driving. 6. Don’t engage in stressful or emotional conversations that might divert your attention from the road. Freeze 1 hour until almost completely frozen. In the meantime, puree watermelon and 1 tablespoon yogurt in a blender. When the yogurt layer is almost completely frozen, add watermelon mixture to form top layer of the ice pops. Push in the pop handles. Freeze another 1-2 hours. The Zika Virus: Six Prevention Tips

hen you prepare your front porch, deck and backyard for warm weather entertaining, it’s important to take precautions against that unpopular party crasher, the mosquito. The pest can potentially endanger your guests, children and pets by spreading such diseases as West Nile, chikungunya and the Zika virus—but you can reduce your risk.

Millions of people have been infected with Zika in the last 12 months and the disease has been found to cause severe birth defects when pregnant women are infected. According to the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Zika is now in 55 countries and has infected more than 470 Americans.

Although the mosquitos that carry and transmit the virus haven’t been found to be infected in the United States yet, scientists say it is a definite possibility. Researchers at the CDC estimate the type of mosquitos that can carry Zika will inhabit a broader range of North America than previously expected. Fortunately, these six tips can help you stay safe: 1. Remove sources of standing water: Empty, cover or throw out containers that hold water. Mosquitos lay eggs in and around standing water, which can collect in pet water bowls, buckets, pool covers, birdbaths and trash cans. Be sure to monitor the standing-water situation at least once a week, especially after it rains. 2. Use insect repellent: There are things you can do to guard your yard against mosquitos, but first you need to use spray.
