Salads provide a healthy and easy avenue to gather several of the recommended nutrients. Here’s a simple recipe for Baby Greens with Roasted Pears, Feta and Walnuts to show you how easy it is to make a healthy and delicious salad. All you need are pears, olive oil, baby greens, feta cheese, toasted walnuts, salt, pepper and your choice of salad dressings. First, preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with wax paper and drizzle four pears, peeled, cored and cut into eighths, with one teaspoon of olive oil. Roast in the oven until the edges turn golden brown. Once the pears have cooled, toss with eight cups of baby greens and your choice of salad dressings (champagne vinaigrette is one recommendation). Sprinkle half-a-cup of feta and half-a-cup of walnuts over the greens, and season with salt and pepper. Now you’re ready to start enjoying National Salad Month like a pro! While home improvements on the honey-do list may seem endless, one important task that shouldn’t be ignored is checking for termite activity. Moisture-damaged homes, regardless of make, model or age, are susceptible to termite infestations. Termites are capable of chewing through wood, flooring and wallpaper undetected. These “silent destroyers” can’t be eradicated with do-it-yourself measures, and cause more than $5 billion in property damage annually, costs not typically covered by homeowners insurance. How to Identify Termites Termite-spotting likely occurs in spring as they build new colonies for mating and nourishment. As colonies mature, winged termites appear around lights of windows and doors. After mating, termites create nearby colonies, spreading the infestation and disappearing into structures. While homeowners may see termites, they can mistake them for flying ants. Termites have distinct body types characterized by straight waists, straight antennae and two sets of wings equal in size. Misidentifying termites could delay treatment and cause structural property damage. Homeowners should be on the lookout for mud tubes on the base of their house, soft wood that sounds hollow when tapped, darkening or blistering of wood structures, small feces piles resembling sawdust near a termite nest and discarded wings near doors or on windowsills. Prevention Tips
If your home is currently termite-free, you should still take preventative steps to avoid becoming a termite magnet in the future. Most importantly, eliminate or reduce moisture in and around the home, which termites need to thrive. very four minutes in the United States, a stroke victim dies-but knowing the signs and symptoms to watch for can help reduce death from stroke and improve outcomes by getting people appropriate and timely care.
Recognizing and understanding the signs and symptoms of a stroke is crucial. Immediate medical attention may limit the effects of a stroke, so it’s imperative to call 9-1-1 at the first sign.
The fifth leading cause of death and the leading cause of serious long-term disability in the United States, stroke affects 800,000 people every year. Unfortunately, many Americans do not recognize the signs of a stroke, so they ignore the symptoms or don’t call 9-1-1. Recognizing the signs and acting immediately could be the difference between making a recovery and living with long-term disability.
Always Act F.A.S.T. If you or someone you know begins to show signs or symptoms of a stroke, there’s a fourletter acronym, “F.A.S.T.,” that corresponds to a test that can be used as a quick screening tool:
What You Should Know A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries blood and oxygen to the brain is blocked by plaque or a blood clot (acute ischemic stroke) or ruptures and bleeds (hemorrhagic stroke). The apparent signs and symptoms of stroke include speech impairment, arm numbness and weakness, severe headache, sudden confusion, trouble seeing out of one or both eyes, as well as uncontrollable drooping of the face. There are several types of risk factors for stroke, some of which are hereditary while others are preventable by altering one’s lifestyle choices.
