hen the weather heats up, many homeowners crank up their central air conditioning or turn to multiple noisy window units. The ABCs of ACA -- Advice for Business Owners in 2016
ealth care reform is continuing to change how businesses offer health insurance coverage, and there are several regulations to remember throughout the year. As of Jan. 1, 2016, a new phase of regulations is now in effect as a result of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Business owners have to be sure they are using the necessary tools to remain compliant and meet ACA reporting requirements, which include the administrative work that comes along with health care reform. Below are a few tips from Aflac, the leading provider of voluntary insurance at the worksite in the United States, for business owners and human resources representatives to keep in mind to stay on track all year: 1. Remember that the Employer Shared Responsibility requirement is now in effect. This means employers with at least 50 full-time equivalent employees are required to offer affordable health coverage that pays at least 60 percent of the cost of covered benefits for employees and their dependents. If employers do not comply, they may be penalized if one or more of its full-time employees receive a premium tax credit for purchasing individual coverage on one of the public health insurance exchanges.
2. Learn who needs coverage. Applicable large employers with 50 or more employees, including equivalents, are required to provide coverage to full-time employees who work at least 30 hours a week, as well as dependents under the age of 26. However, businesses are not required to offer coverage to part-time employees or the spouses of part-time or full-time employees. 3. Adhere to IRS reporting requirements for employers. Applicable large employers and businesses with self-funded health plans are required to report information regarding the health coverage of employees to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It’s important for business owners to keep track of any changes in employment status for each employee, provide ppropriate health coverage and report necessary information to the IRS. A
sailboat without a rudder will drift aimlessly with the tide. It cannot seek safe harbor from a storm or explore the open sea without a way to return to port. Too many investors and savers approach the task of building wealth without a rudder. They either lack a plan, or they have a plan that gets swept under the rug. Less than 20 percent of Americans have a comprehensive financial plan, according to one survey. In decades past, the guidance that investors often received was to get into a portfolio of stocks or equity mutual funds, and then just leave their money there for many years in hopes the portfolio might appreciate. With the exception of some major drops in the market, as seen in October 1987, there have been periods of a general rise in the price of stocks. In recent years, the stock market has been all over the map, with 2015 ending nearly flat. Investors today have even more reason to stick to a plan that is not just buy and hold, but one that conforms to the reality of the market as one component of a financial plan. However, before investing discretionary funds, it is critical to create a plan to put aside money and stop wasting it. It is also important is to decide why money is important to you, and what are your eventual goals for any savings or investment accounts? Like the sailboat, you have to have something you are steering toward. Without knowing what you are saving for or how much you may need, you are a boat adrift at the mercy of the tide. Create a balance sheet. What are you left with after you deduct obligations from assets? Have you been saving consistently or making frivolous purchases frequently that don’t have any utilitarian benefit? Being aware
of areas where money is wasted can lead to a change in behavior. Part of a financial plan is to know what you really have and what you can reasonably save. It includes creating priorities, goals and a method for accumulating wealth while providing an exit strategy. In addition to saving as much as a person reasonably can, paying off debt should be a concurrent activity. Besides a mortgage, any other debt, especially credit card debt, only defeats the benefits of growing wealth. Having an exit strategy is especially valuable with individual stocks. Put the emotions aside and determine that when a stock is in free-fall, there is a point where you will exit and reduce your downside risk. To help mitigate some of the risk of investing in individual stocks in the first place, using an index fund or an ETF can allow for more diversification and potentially spread your risk out over a large number of equities. Committing to these strategies is key. One way to remove the emotions of investing, or to get support in your effort to stick to a plan, is to get some guidance from a financial advisor. The advisor can take the emotion out of investing and help formulate a plan that makes sense for accumulating wealth and meeting many other financial goals. As with the sailboat, the most important aspect of meeting those financial goals is to have a rudder. Hold onto it tightly and chart a course toward achieving your aspirations without letting the winds of distraction blow you off course. Ten Ways To Get Prepared For Planting
hen the weather warms, many people’s thoughts turn to how to make sure their yard is in tip-top shape for planting. These 10 tips can help get your garden off to a great start:
8. Planting vegetables? Consider raised beds. These warm quickly, encourage good irrigation and aeration, and are excellent for difficult soil. In addition, you’ll be able to reach every corner to pull young weeds as they appear.
1. Make a plan. First, decide what to plant. One thing you may want to consider is pollinator-attractant plants. Yellow, blue or purple flowers make your garden more appealing to bees. 9. Prepare a compost pile. Buy or make a compost bin and throw in all your garden waste, grass clippings, paper, wood prunings, and fruit and veggie peelings. Turn and aerate it with a garden fork every month. 10. Label your plants. If you’re growing food, learning to identify plants or sharing a community garden, plant markers are a must. Use the plastic markers that came with the plants or buy or make your own from pebbles, bamboo skewers or broken terracotta pots. Label your plants with the variety name and date you planted it.
2. Observe the current state of your garden. See how well last year’s planting choices worked out. Consider placement of compatible plants, sunlight, shade and irrigation. 3. Tidy up. Clean out old plants and weeds from last year’s garden, including the roots. Remove winter mulch or pine straw, too. 4. Survey the soil. Make sure the soil contains the right nutrients with a soil sampling kit, found at home and garden centers. This analysis will inform your decisions on fertilizing methods. Aerate your soil by breaking it up so air, water and nutrients penetrate the plant roots. 5. Take care of pests. Check for slugs, snails or aphids, treating any infestations you find. 6. If it’s broken, fix it. Fix broken structures and gardening tools. Also, treat wood with a preservative during dry periods to prevent cracks and splitting. 7. Gather the tools you’ll need and make sure they’re clean. Sharpen and clean your tools, as proper maintenance saves you money and keeps disease from spreading between cuttings.

How To Preserve Your Privacy When Making Mobile Payments
D
id you know that now you can use a smartphone, tablet or other mobile devices to pay for some purchases? Mobile payments can be convenient—no need to write a check or to pull out your wallet for cash or plastic. No need to type in your payment information to buy something online. But what about your privacy? According to Consumer Federation of America, that’s a good question to ask whenever you consider using new technology. Because you usually carry your phone or other mobile device with you, it’s on most of the time, and it may contain very sensitive personal information, it’s especially important to keep it, and its contents, safe and secure, especially if you want to use it to make mobile payments or conduct other financial business. How Do Mobile Payments Work? • Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile wallet payment. NFC enables you to tap or wave your mobile device close to a “reader” next to a cash register or on a vending machine, turnstile, parking meter, etc. Your mobile device sends the account information that you are going to use for the payment through a radio signal with a short range of about four inches. The mobile wallet app stores your account number in a secure chip in the phone or in a secure file server linked to the mobile wallet app. Examples include Apple Pay and Google Android Pay. • Mobile web payments (WAP). Use the web browser on your mobile device or a mobile app to make a purchase on the Internet and charge it to your credit, debit, prepaid or bank account. • QR code (quick response) scans. Your mobile device produces a QR code on the screen to be scanned at the register. The QR code provides the link to the payment information. Usually, you download a mobile app for the merchant (such as Starbucks) or a mobile wallet (such as LevelUp) that allows you to create the QR code on your mobile device. • Mobile text payments (SMS). Send a code by text message to the seller using your mobile device to approve the payment. The purchase is charged to your wireless service bill or a pre-paid account held by the mobile operator. Personal information, such as payment account number, should not be sent via SMS. • Direct mobile billing. Provide your mobile phone number as your account number to the merchant. The purchase is charged to your wireless service bill. These are normally low-dollar digital payments for items such as ring-tones, screen savers or apps, with most mobile operators establishing a transaction and consolidated dollar limit. Mobile payments often involve using software programs called “apps.” Apps may require you to provide personal information in order to download them and, once installed, they can access informa-
tion from your mobile device. In some cases, you may be asked for permission for the app to obtain specific information, such as your location or your address book. Some mobile payment apps will only collect and share the information that is required to make the payment; others may collect more information about you. Apps may use your personal information for purposes unrelated to making a payment, such as to sell you inapp features or advertise to you on behalf of other companies. They might also share your personal information with other companies. Who else could collect information from your use of a payment app? It could be the app store, an advertising network, a data broker that collects information about people from a variety of sources and packages it for sale, the manufacturer of your mobile device, the payment provider (such as your credit card issuer), a payment processor, your wireless carrier and broadband service provider, and the businesses that you are paying. Not all mobile payment services involve using an app—whichever payment service you are using, read its privacy policy. And if you’re making a purchase from a merchant’s website, you’ll also want to look at its privacy policy. Website operators and advertising networks often collect information about people who visit websites. Tips for Protecting Your Mobile Payment Privacy • Read the privacy policies of the companies whose services you are using to make mobile payments and the companies that you are paying. • If you don’t like a company’s privacy policy, take your business elsewhere. • Don’t voluntarily provide information that is not necessary to use a product or service or make a payment. • Take advantage of the controls that you may be given over the collection and use of your personal information. • Since mobile payments, like all electronic payments, leave a trail, if there are transactions that you would prefer to make anonymously, pay with cash. What They Do Although considered the nation’s “fourth arm of defense,” America’s mariners are civilians working for private companies and are not members of the armed forces. Now, Seafarers International Union (SIU)–contracted companies offer plentiful opportunities for employment aboard all types of vessels, including deep-sea cargo vessels, tankers, military support ships, Great Lakes vessels, cable ships, tugboats, passenger ferries and more. What You Can Do There’s a surprising variety of jobs available, too. Here’s a look at a few and the basic requirements for applicants: • Military veterans with Deck and Engine ratings in a watch-standing capacity who have sea time within the last seven years, and have been honorably discharged, can enter the special veterans program at the Paul Hall Center for Maritime Training and Education in Maryland. So can culinary specialists with food preparation experience and at least eight years of military service. Through the school, they can get Basic Safety, Able Seafarer Deck or Able Seafarer Engine, and VPDSD endorsements, and graduates are guaranteed a first job on board a U.S.-flag merchant vessel. • The school has an apprentice program providing free room and board.
