P e t i t i o n e r Yolanda Denise Wright’ s (Ms. Wright’s) testimony is summarized as follows: a. She received a call from her niece. Her niece told her that her daughter (Mother) had given birth to the Child outside, near a dumpster. b. The Child was in the hospital for three (3) weeks after her birth. She was born at 33 weeks. c. Ms. Wright received a call from social services, stating that Mother was not visiting the Child at the hospital. Social services told Ms. Wright that she had two (2) hours to retrieve the Child from the hospital, or the Child would be placed in the State’s custody. d. Ms. Wright when to the hospital, picked up the Child, and brought her home. The Child has been with the Petitioners since then. e. The Child was on oxygen and medications until June 9. f. After about four (4) days, Mother called and asked Ms. Wright if she had the Child. Mother then hung up. g. A few days after June 9, Mother showed up at Ms. Wright’ s home with her girlfriend. They stayed for five (5) or six (6) minutes, and then left. Ms. Wright has not seen Mother since. h. Ms. Wright served Mother via publication in the Health City Sun. i. Ms. Wright and Mr. Brooks drove to Santa Fe to attempt to search the putative father registry. They were unable to submit to a search because they were not the Child’s parents, and did not have her birth certificate or Social Security card. This was because Mother did not fill out any of the Child’s paperwork. j. Ms.Wright and Mr. Brooks were subsequently able to obtain a birth certificate and Social Security number for the Child. 6. Prior to the hearing scheduled below, the Petitioners shall file proof of service on Mother, and a copy of the Affidavit of Publication. 7. The Petitioners made diligent efforts, without success, to conduct a search with the New Mexico Putative Fathers’ Registry with the New Mexico Bureau of Vital Statistics. 8. The Petitioners shall serve the Unknown Father by publication. 9. Expanding Diversity Demographics Provides Opportunity for Firms

T

he demographic makeup of the U.S. population and the financial status of its communities are shifting in ways that have significant implications for the country’s economy, including the financial planning profession.

Research published by the Journal of Financial Planning found that Black and Latino households are less likely than white families to work with a financial planner, and an even smaller percentage of those households choose to receive comprehensive financial planning advice.

According to U.S. Census Bureau research projections ( w w w. c e n s u s . g ov / c ont e nt / dam/Census/library/ publications/2015/demo/p251143.pdf), the United States will have a minority majority population by 2045 as Black, Latino and Asian-American communities grow. These traditionally underrepresented populations are not only growing in size, but they are also building greater wealth.

Financial advisors and their firms have an opportunity to reach these underserved groups and diversify their client base while providing a valuable and empowering service. One way to do so, according to the CFP Board Center for Financial Planning, is to ensure that the financial planning workforce reflects the diversity of wealth-building communities. It currently does not: Only about 4 percent of CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM professionals self-report as Black or Latino, whereas nearly 32 percent of the U.S. population identifies as Black or Latino.

Purchasing power among people of color has increased exponentially since 2019. The annual buying power of Black consumers was estimated by Nielsen to be $1.3 trillion in 2019 -- a roughly 48 percent increase over 2010. Latino purchasing power grew by nearly 70 percent over the same period, according to the University of Georgia, reaching approximately $1.7 trillion in 2019. Additionally, the wealthiest fifth of Blacks -- more than three million households -- has an average wealth of $395,000, while the wealthiest fifth of Latinos households have more than $400,000 in average wealth.

The Center is leading a collaborative, profession-wide effort to implement sustainable diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives that can address this systemic challenge and foster greater diversity among financial planners.
