Uncle Sam Wants You To Save For Retirement

I

f you ever feel your finances are too stretched to save for retirement, you’re not alone—and there could be good news for you. The Saver’s Credit—a little-known tax credit made available by the IRS to eligible taxpayers—could make saving for retirement more affordable than you think. It may reduce your federal income taxes when you save for retirement through a qualified retirement plan or an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). “The Saver’s Credit is a fantastic tax credit because it pays you to save for retirement. It offers eligible workers an added incentive to save for retirement on top of the benefits of tax-deferred savings when they contribute to a 401(k), 403(b), 457(b) or IRA,” says Catherine Collinson, president of nonprofit Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies®. Here’s how it works: 1. Check Your Eligibility Depending on your filing status and income level, you may qualify for a nonrefundable credit of up to $1,000 (or $2,000 if filing jointly) on your federal income taxes for that year when you contribute to a 401(k), 403(b), 457(b) or similar retirement plan, or IRA. Single filers with a maximum Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of up to $31,000 in 2017 or $31,500 in 2018 are eligible. For the head of a household, the AGI maximum is $46,500 in 2017 or $47,250 in 2018. For those who are married and file a joint return, the AGI maximum is $62,000 in 2017 or $63,000 in 2018. You must be 18 years or older by January 1 and cannot be a full-time student or be claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return. If you fit within these parameters, the Saver’s Credit may be for you. 2. Save for Retirement Save for retirement in your employer’s retirement plan, if offered, or in an IRA. In general, for every dollar you contribute to a qualified retirement plan or IRA (up to the lesser of the limits permitted by an employer-sponsored plan or the IRS), you defer that amount from your current overall taxable income on your federal tax returns—and you may also qualify for the Saver’s Credit. 3. Cybersecurity Expert Makes Data Breaches Personal To Encourage Smart Security Practices For Spring Break Travel

A

s a father, Maurice Gibson says his smartphone is integral in documenting his children’s memories from vacations. But as an assistant dean for the College of Information Systems and Technology at University of Phoenix, he worries about the risk of losing much more than his data if his phone is hacked. Gibson warns that people may overlook cybersecurity best practices when traveling if they focus primarily on protecting information like credit card numbers or passwords. He encourages Americans instead to look at cybersecurity as a way to protect not only personal data1 but memories. “Most of our experiences today are captured in moments through our smartphones. I have children, and we’re always taking photos of them while on vacation. Losing those photos is like losing their childhood,” Gibson says. “For me, looking at cybersecurity on a personal level helps to incorporate smart cybersecurity practices.” Three-fourths of Americans bring their smartphone with them on vacation, according to a survey from University of Phoenix. The survey also found that 48 percent of respondents worry about cybersecurity risks while traveling. However, 55 percent feel that the need to use personal devices on vacation outweighs cybersecurity risks. Americans practice habits that put them at risk of cyberattacks, but very few take measures to prevent data breaches. Three in 10 access credit card or banking websites while on vacation and 23 percent make purchases online. However, only 39 percent of those surveyed update antivirus software before traveling and fewer than a quarter (24 percent) change passwords2. Gibson shares three tips to help prevent data breaches this spring break. Post photos online from the hotel or home, not in public.

Gibson says that people should be wary of how often they post photos online or on social media while traveling, especially on unsecured public Wi-Fi networks, which are often used to avoid mobile data limits and provide criminals an opportunity to breach devices. Rather than logging online at a coffee shop or in the hotel lobby, he says to wait until you are in your room and can use a network that is password protected. Disable Wi-Fi auto-connect and location tracking services. Gibson encourages travelers to disable their phone’s feature that allows it to auto-connect to public Wi-Fi networks when in public, as well as turn off location tracking that can make it easier for criminals to track and access data. Refrain from providing information on how long you will be away because it can put your home at risk. Avoid making online purchases in public. Popular spring break destinations can be prime locations for criminals looking to steal credit card information or other data. Gibson warns travelers not to make online purchases on public Wi-Fi. These networks are not secure and can be monitored by anyone, making sharing payment information dangerous. If you must make purchases online in public, use your phone’s more secure hotspot. The conditions are collectively known as inflammatory bowel diseases, or IBD. They affect the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, the area of the body where digestion takes place. The diseases cause inflammation of the intestine and can lead to ongoing symptoms and complications. Although there is no known cause or cure for IBD, there are many effective treatments to help control it.

4. Regular colonoscopies are recommended in IBD patients to monitor inflammation and any growths that can potentially be removed, or changes happening within the colon.

Anyone can be diagnosed with IBD, but adolescents and young adults between the ages of 15 and 35 are the most susceptible. Ten percent of those afflicted develop symptoms before age 18. Approximately 20 percent of patients have another family member with IBD, and families frequently share a similar pattern of disease. Symptoms range from mild to severe and can include any or all of the following: • persistent diarrhea • abdominal pain or cramps • rectal bleeding • fever and weight loss • fatigue • joint, skin or eye irritations • delayed growth in children. 2. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are unpredictable. Some people have no active symptoms for some time (also known as remission). Others require frequent hospitalizations and surgery. Symptoms may vary in nature, frequency and intensity.

Treatments There are medications currently available to help control disease symptoms and inflammation. The most commonly prescribed are aminosalicylates (5-ASA), corticosteroids, immunomodulators, biologic therapies, and antibiotics. Surgery is sometimes recommended when medications can no longer control symptoms, when there are intestinal obstructions or when other complications arise. Emotional Factors IBD does not only affect the body physically. There can also be effects on mental health. Feelings of anxiety and depression can be very common in IBD, as patients learn to cope with everyday living. It is important not to ignore these invisible symptoms and to seek support or to talk to your doctor about any emotional concerns. Diet There may be times when modifying a patient’s diet can be helpful, particularly when symptoms are active, but there’s no evidence that certain foods cause IBD. No single diet or eating plan works for everyone with IBD. Diets are tailored to each patient. Shopping For Yard Equipment: Things To Know

I

f you’re like most people, when spring comes, you’re ready to get outside and make your yard both beautiful and functional. Maybe you’re aiming to have the best yard on the block, want to install an outdoor family room, or want to expand your space for entertaining. Perhaps your kids or pets could use a better space for play. Regardless of need, now is the time to get “backyard ready.” The Tools You’ll Need “Completing big outdoor jobs is always easier with help from outdoor power equipment,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI). “The right outdoor power equipment can help you get the work done faster and can help you safely maintain your yard.” These tips from Kiser can help you select the machinery you need to get the job done. • Plan your needs. Draw a sketch of your yard. Include any major features such as trees, bushes, an herb or vegetable garden, flower beds, lawn furniture, play or sports equipment, an outdoor patio, or birdbath. Note where maintenance may be required. Will bushes need to be trimmed back from your home or garage? Do you want to put in some flowering bushes or a tree? Are you planning to install a fence and more grass because of your pet? Now list the tools and equipment needed to take care of your yard and what will make the job easier. • Consider equipment needed. Visit your garage or shed and find all your lawn and garden tools. Wheel out your mower and get out other equipment. Look it over and make a list of what’s needed or could be upgraded. tiller. If you have a large lawn, an upgrade to a riding lawn mower might make mowing easier. A string trimmer might make caring for bushes or trimming grass near a fence line easier. A pole pruner can help trim back limbs that are too high to reach safely with a saw and a leaf blower can clear leaves faster than a rake. • Research equipment online before you buy. Think about efficiencies of scale. The right equipment can mean more time for other activities and make doing yard work more enjoyable, too. Doing online research in advance can help you pick the right equipment for the job. Outdoor power equipment can be gas, electric or battery powered and technology is rapidly affecting product design. There are even robotic lawn mowers available today. Equipment may be sized to handle a smaller job or a massive one. Ultimately, your decision should be based on your needs. • Ask questions. Talk with the staff at the store or ask online about the equipment. In the store, ask to pick up and hold equipment to determine its “fit” for you. Discuss safety features and ask about fueling and care instructions. Find out how often equipment may need to be serviced. • Make a plan for storage and maintenance. Store your equipment in a cool and dry place. It should typically be serviced at the end of the fall and the beginning of the spring. Put service dates on your calendar with a reminder.
