How To Pay Less Next Tax Time (Legally)

etting a big check may not always be a good thing. For example, if you receive a large tax refund from the IRS, it means you paid out too much in income tax the year before and, essentially, lent your money to the government interest free. Fortunately, a talk with a licensed tax specialist before the end of the year may help you avoid both that and having to pay a lot next tax time.

Talking About It When A Parent Needs Help
f your family is like many, talking about what can happen when someone is old and frail is not something you like to do. With a little thought and preparation, however, any family can start an open and honest dialogue that can lead to a plan for the future that everybody agrees to and understands. Start by asking questions about what your loved ones enjoy doing and how they can keep their treasured independence for as long as possible. This approach can involve the entire family in a constructive discussion about what the older person needs and wants and set priorities for making specific choices in the future. It’s best to have this conversation well before there’s an immediate need for assistance or any intervention. Here are a few conversation starters to consider that can let the discussion unfold naturally and comfortably. 1. Talk about the home. This line of discussion can help identify any immediate needs. Are certain tasks becoming more difficult? Is your loved one finding it difficult to operate or maintain anything in the home? Are senses, balance and stamina where they should be? 2. Talk about appliances and household fixtures. How often do they use them? What are they cooking? This can be a starting point to talk about whether your senior is properly taking care of him- or herself nutritionally. Understanding the challenges our seniors are facing now can help them anticipate their future needs. Even for a younger person, doing the laundry can be an exerting chore. For an older adult living alone, it may become easier to let physically challenging tasks slide when they become more
difficult or inconvenient. 3. Talk about the people they know. What is Ted up to? How is Marian coming back from her surgery? Socialization is important at every age. Student Cultivates Peace Around The World

n international art contest celebrating children’s visions of peace capped off its 20th year by recognizing a teenager from Malaysia as the grand prize winner. The grand prize winner of this year’s Lions International Peace Poster Contest is Ming Yang Soong, a 13-year-old boy from Bidor, Malaysia. His poster, selected from 350,000 entries from 81 countries, portrays the theme “Peace Around the World.” As the grand prize winner, Soong receives a trip to New York City for a special award ceremony during Lions Day with the United Nations. “All nations must work together to keep this world peaceful,” Soong said. “If there is peace in the world, we can progress and live in harmony. I hope that all countries on this planet will support peace.” During the past two decades more than four million children, ages 11 to 13, have artistically shared their visions for peace through the Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs sponsor the contest in schools and organized youth programs. The contest provides an outlet for children and adults to discuss the meaning of world peace while visually portraying their feelings. Now entering its 21st year, the contest has been held in more than 100 countries. “Today the world is divided into pieces by hatred, terrorism and war,”
said Kajol Chetan Bid, a merit award winner from India. “Together we can make this world a better place to live in - a world full of love and peace.” Winners have come from all across the globe, many from areas where children do not know peace. “Peace is a gift to live and to let others live it,” said Feliccina Sioufi of Lebanon, a merit award winner. Lions Clubs International President Mahendra Amarasuriya said, “Lions in many nations have embraced the Peace Poster Contest as a hands-on way to promote peace and to support the young people in their communities. It is another way Lions have accepted the challenge to change the world.” The 24 finalists’ peace posters will be exhibited during the year at children’s museums and various locations throughout the United States. T
he charm of an older home is an attractive selling feature. Less appealing are the inefficiencies of an older heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system or the absence of a cooling system. Updating to an HVAC system improves comfort and often makes good economic sense, but it requires careful planning. Asking the right questions and enlisting the help of a qualified HVAC contractor can make it possible to create a comfortable, efficient environment without spoiling the character of these classic structures. Step 1: Determine how much equipment you need Ask your HVAC contractor to conduct a “Manual J” load calculation to determine your home’s unique heating and cooling needs. This calculation analyzes everything that affects air temperature in your home—things like windows, orientation to the sun, and duct leakage. Using this calculation, your contractor can recommend the right-size equipment for your home. Step 2: Determine the location of the unit and inspect ductwork Ask your contractor where the new equipment will be located and whether your ductwork is properly sealed, insulated and sized for the equipment. Dust and debris in the ductwork can reduce the HVAC system’s efficiency and damage its components, so have the ductwork inspected before shopping for a new system. Your contractor should also inspect the home’s electrical system to be sure it provides enough power to handle a new, upgraded HVAC system. Step 3: Discuss your efficiency and “stage” options Whether shopping for a furnace, air conditioner or heat pump, always check the efficiency of the unit you are considering. Generally speaking, a higher AFUE, SEER or HSPF means increased efficiency and reduced operating expenses.
