very heart has a built-in pacemaker that ensures it beats regularly. When that natural pacemaker doesn’t do its job, however, a person may experience an irregular heart rhythm, the most common and undertreated of which is atrial fibrillation (AF). This irregular heartbeat isn’t always noticeable at first but can cause chaos over time.

Understanding AF AF, which affects more than 33.5 million people worldwide, occurs when the upper chambers of the heart beat significantly faster than a normal heartbeat or quiver irregularly. Some people with AF have no symptoms, while others have chest discomfort or pain and experience fainting or light-headedness, as well as fatigue, shortness of breath or weakness. “When I was young, my heart did funny things. It fluttered, it skipped a beat, but mostly it resolved by itself,” said Sue Halpern, a lifelong AF patient. “When it didn’t resolve by itself, I somehow learned how to make it stop. I began to notice in my 20s and early 30s that it was getting harder to make it stop, but I still didn’t know anything was wrong with me.” Because the heart isn’t pumping normally, blood can pool in the heart and clot; these clots can also make their way through the bloodstream. If left untreated, people with AF have a much higher risk of stroke and an increased risk of heart failure. AF is typically caused by damage to the heart from disease, an abnormality from birth, surgery or a heart attack. However, adopting healthy behaviors such as monitoring cholesterol and blood pressure, avoiding smoking and excessive caffeine, and not abusing alcohol can help prevent disease. How To Tell If You Have AF As with so many diseases, early detection of AF is important. Physicians may obtain an electrocardiogram (ECG) or stress test, or recommend short-term monitoring with a cardiac event recorder or Holter monitor. Unlike these short-term methods, a small insertable cardiac monitor (ICM) automatically detects and records abnormal heart rhythms for up to three years, while remaining barely detectable under the patient’s skin.

For example, the Medtronic Reveal LINQ ICM is approximately one-third the size of an AAA battery, yet it can accurately detect AF. What To Do If You Have AF Once diagnosed, living with AF doesn’t have to be a burden. While treatment options vary, many people respond well to medications. For those whose natural pacemaker needs an extra boost to keep the beat, treatment may include an implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) or a pacemaker that can respond to and reduce the duration of AF episodes. An ICD can also detect a dangerous and potentially life-threatening heart rhythm and send a lifesaving therapy to correct it. Another treatment for paroxysmal (fleeting) atrial fibrillation (PAF) is cryoablation, a minimally invasive procedure that isolates the pulmonary veins, which are a source of erratic electrical signals that cause PAF. The device used in the procedure uses cold energy to interrupt these irregular electrical pathways in the heart. America’s Retirement Score Hits All-Time High

A

merican savers are more financially prepared for retirement than they’ve been since the dawn of YouTube. And Millennials deserve an extra special shout-out for how much money they’ve been socking away. That’s according to Fidelity Investments’ latest biennial Retirement Savings Assessment study, which - while mostly upbeat - also makes clear that all too many of those surveyed remain “at risk” of not being able to fully cover essential expenses in retirement if they don’t turn things around. Specifically, after totaling up the assets of the 25- to 74-year-old respondents earning at least $20,000 annually - and that included current or expected Social Security benefits - Fidelity estimated that the typical saver is on track to have 80 percent of the income he or she will need to cover retirement costs. That’s the highest it’s been since the study was first conducted in 2005, when the same figure was 62 percent and people were just beginning to know the joys of watching videos of cats performing weird tricks. “It’s a significant improvement,” says Ken Hevert, Fidelity’s senior vice president of retirement, who attributed the rise to both a higher median savings rate compared to 2006 (8.8 percent vs. 3.6 percent) and better portfolio asset allocation. Even more comprehensively, four color-coded categories were used to show where households fell on a retirement preparedness spectrum based on their ability to handle estimated expenses in a down market: * Dark Green Thirty-two percent were on target to cover more than 95 percent of their freight (up 1 percent from 2016). * Green. Eighteen percent were looking good as far as essentials go, but not discretionary items like travel and entertainment (down 1 percent from 2016).

* Yellow. Twenty-two percent were off track, with “modest adjustments” likely required to their planned lifestyles (down 1 percent from 2016). * Red. Twenty-eight percent definitely “need attention,” to put it kindly (up 1 percent from 2016). Perhaps the biggest surprise in the study had to do with Millennials. For the first time ever, those born between 1981 and 1992 surpassed the older Generation X in Fidelity’s unique cross-generations scorecard. The latter are on track to have 78 percent of the retirement income they’ll need, while the former lags behind by 1 percent - though that’s presumably after many of them dipped into their own savings to pay the college tuitions of their Millennial offspring. “Millennials are clearly putting money aside for retirement and taking more control of their personal situations,” says Hevert. And Baby Boomers? Collectively, they’re in the best position of all, especially those Baby Boomers with increasingly rare pensions, and are on course to have set aside 86 percent of the money they’ll need. For those curious where they stand, Fidelity allows anyone to access their retirement score online. And if you really want a cushiony retirement, keep in mind that you could have 108 percent of what you’ll need by embracing all three of the following “accelerators”: saving at least 15 percent of your income yearly; ensuring an age-appropriate asset mix; and deferring Social Security benefits till at least 66 or 67. “While these actions taken separately are clearly helpful,” says Hevert, “doing all three could help bring you from good to great.” -NewsUSA

Wear wide-brimmed hats when outdoors and use high-quality sunglasses with a UVA and UVB rating of 99 to 100 percent. Keep Track of Your Eye Health. When It Comes To Investing, Are You A Bull Or A Bear? Or Are You More Of A Narwhal, Or A Mason Bee?

I

nvesting experts typically refer to two iconic animal mascots when talking about investor sentiment, the Bull and the Bear. If you’re “bullish,” you think stocks are going up and you invest aggressively. If you’re “bearish,” you expect stocks to go down and you look for more conservative investments to wait out the storm. Either way, you know what you want and you invest accordingly. But there are more than two ways to approach investing—and many Americans aren’t actually sure what their investing style really is. A new survey by Ally Invest reveals that only 10 percent of Americans think of themselves as Bulls and only 10 percent identify as Bears. It makes sense. To identify as either a Bull or a Bear, you have to know which types of investments you prefer and how much risk you’re comfortable taking. And while more than half of Americans have some kind of savings account, according to the Ally survey, only a third have a retirement savings plan such as a 401(k) or other retirement plan, while less than one-quarter (23 percent) have stocks. The Ally survey identified several new kinds of investing “spirit animals” that might better describe how real people approach saving and investing for retirement. Some survey respondents did have a defined investing style, but few saw themselves as aggressive Bulls or conservative Bears. One in five survey respondents are like investing Prairie Dogs—they like to be safe and consistent, building a balanced, diversified portfolio—and 16 percent are Mason Bees, carefully planning for the future. The 14 percent of respondents who identify as Mules are very cautious, and the 13 percent who identify as Owls tend to do a lot of research before making any investment decisions. Once you understand your real investing style, you can look for an approach that will actually work for your personality. For example, Emus, Narwhals and Sasquatches should look for help getting more comfortable with investing, in order to increase their chances of meeting their retirement savings goals. If you don’t invest enough to understand your own style, consider an automated approach. A managed portfolio or a targetdate fund that automatically rebalances as you age can take you all the way to retirement without requiring you to do a ton of research. If you’re an Owl who loves to research all your options, great—set aside time each year to review your portfolio, learn about all your investments, and make any changes you need. But if you’re never going to do that research, don’t let that hold you back from meeting your goals. There are options out there for every kind of investor. Bulls and Bears may work for the professionals, but the rest of us in the real world may need a little more guidance to get where we need to go.
