Improved Treatment for COPD Coming, Says Harvard Scientist Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) takes an enormous toll in human suffering and medical costs. More than 30 million Americans struggle from frequent coughing, increased breathlessness, wheezing, and the other symptoms of the progressive lung disease. Most COPD patients must take medications every day. As a result, inhaled drugs for COPD, such as Spiriva, have become blockbusters, bringing in billions of dollars a year in revenue. These drugs work by opening up airways in the lungs to make breathing easier. Unfortunately, the so-called bronchodilator drugs currently on the market have limitations, says Dr. David A. Edwards, Professor of the Practice of Idea Translation at Harvard University. “The main problem is that they are not very efficient at delivering drugs to the lungs,” he explains. Much of the drug sticks in the mouth or throat rather than getting to the lungs where it is needed. In addition, says Dr. Edwards, “the fact that the drugs remain in the mouth and throat can lead to serious side effects.” That’s why a number of companies have been working on innovative new approaches to increase the efficiency of drug delivery. “One particularly promising idea, being developed by Pulmatrix, Inc. [NASDAQ: PULM], is to attach drugs to small particles that can ‘fly’ far more easily into the lungs,” says

It’s Time to Sign Up for Super Senior Tennis
T
he Northern New Mexico Tennis Association is taking registrations for low-cost beginner and refresher lessons for adults 60 and older.
The program consists of six weeks of one-hour lessons, twice a week, followed by six weeks of round-robin play at five locations in Albuquerque. The cost is $60 for the entire 12-week program. Lessons start April 3. If needed, there will be a make-up week. If you cannot attend a class, you can check at one of the other locations to make-
up the class. Round-robin play will start the week of May 22. The last round-robin date will include lunch and a party at Sierra Vista West Tennis Center, 5001 Montano NW. Never Too Late To Finish High School

or many adults, passing a high school equivalency test (such as the GED® test) is the first step toward a better job, a college degree and a brighter future. Last year, adults in the U.S. who had a high school diploma or equivalent earned nearly $10,000 per year more than those without a high school diploma, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate was also lower for those who had a high school degree. Finishing high school is important, and free adult education classes are the best place to start. If you or someone you care about is thinking of finishing high school, there is more support than you may realize. The Finish Your Diploma campaign, created by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and the Ad Council, has helped more than 900,000 people find free adult education classes across America since 2010. Free Classes Are Available Before taking a high school equivalency test, it’s best to prepare by taking classes. In most areas, nonprofits and literacy centers offer free classes to help prepare for the official test. Each adult education center will work with new students to place them in the right classes and create a custom learning plan. Teachers and tutors in each program help students learn the material and support them as they earn their diploma. How To Have A Great Game Watching Party
W
hen the gang gathers at your house to watch the game, heeding three hints on how to throw a terrific party can help you really score compliments. 1. Figure not everyone has an equal interest in the actual game itself. Consider setting up a second party room, maybe even with another TV. 2. Set up soft drinks, water and fruit juices as well as beer. 3. Go for the traditional but with a twist. Serve chicken wings that just about everyone can enjoy, such as these: Gluten-Free Crispy BBQ Chicken Wings 2 4.5-oz. bags Crunchmaster Sea Salt Multi-Grain Crackers 1 cup gluten-free barbecue sauce—use divided ½ cup honey—use divided 4 lbs. chicken wing drumettes Pour ¾ cup of the barbecue sauce and ¼ cup of the honey in a large plastic storage bag and mix. Add the chicken wings, close the bag and toss several times to coat the wings with the sauce. Let sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or up to 24 hours. Preheat oven to 450° F. Spray two baking sheets with gluten-free, nonstick cooking spray. Grind the Crunch-
master Sea Salt Multi-Grain Crackers in a food processor or blender to fine crumbs and pour onto a dinner plate. Remove a chicken wing from the marinade, roll in the cracker crumbs to coat and place on prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining chicken wings. Discard the marinade. Spray the tops of the wings lightly with gluten-free, nonstick cooking spray. Bake for 25−30 minutes or until browned and cooked thoroughly (registering 165° F on an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the wing). Combine the remaining ¼ cup barbecue sauce with the remaining ¼ cup honey and serve with the wings for dipping. Makes about 30 wings. Water Treatment System Maintenance for the Well Owner
W
ater treatment can help household well owners address health risks and undesirable taste, odor, and smells -- but treatment systems work only if properly maintained, says the National Ground Water Association (NGWA), which operates the website, WellOwner.org. Periodic water testing can help ensure that treatment systems are working properly. A water treatment service provider or the manufacturer can recommend water testing intervals. Consult with a water treatment professional about your capability of maintaining your water treatment system. If you are unsure, have a water treatment professional do it. Here are maintenance basics for primary water treatment technologies. Continuous disinfection: Ultraviolet light systems treat water coming into the house. Good maintenance requires that the quartz sleeve in which the lamp is housed be clean. Also, annual lamp replacement is wise. Ion exchange: Referred to as water softeners, ion exchange needs salt, which needs replenishment periodically. Water softeners can run years with minimal maintenance. Maintenance requirements can vary. For example, if ion exchange is used to remove nitrate -- a health risk to infants at certain concentrations -the system requires a different resin and substance to regenerate the resin than traditional water softening. Reverse osmosis (RO): When coupled with granular activated carbon
(GAC) filters before and after the RO membrane, RO is effective in treating many water quality issues. GAC filters usually need replacement once or twice a year. But the RO membrane can last for years. Whole house sediment filter: These remove particulate and enhance effectiveness and reduce maintenance of treatment systems down the line. Follow the manufacturer’s filter-change directions. Adaptable automatic backwashing filter: These backwash the filter media, requiring little maintenance to remove sediment, tastes and odors, iron and manganese, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and arsenic. The media bed must be replaced periodically. For VOCs and arsenic, consult with a qualified water treatment service provider or the manufacturer about periodic water monitoring and proper media bed disposal. Acid neutralizing systems to reduce lead: These reduce corrosiveness in water that can cause lead leaching from plumbing pipes, fittings, fixtures, and solder. Adaptable automatic backwashing filters and sodium carbonate feed pump systems can reduce corrosiveness. The filter requires calcite addition annually and total calcite replacement every two to three years. The injection system requires adding sodium carbonate two to three times annually. f you’re like most Americans, you may be surprised to learn just where some of the best-known and beloved calypso songs originated.

Though such songs as “Day-O,” “Jamaica Farewell,” “Island in the Sun” and many more may sound like they sprang up from roving troubadours, they were all written by the same man, in many ways the fruit of his remarkable life.
Now his life and career are chronicled in his autobiography, “Day-O!!!.” The book is set amid a wider social tapestry that depicts the plight, joys and foibles of one black family growing up in prewar Brooklyn and the broader black struggle leading up to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s. It documents his meteoric rise to the top echelons of the music business as the songwriter who composed for Harry Belafonte, The Kingston Trio and many more.
The Man And His Times Irving Burgie was born in Brooklyn in 1924, served in WWII and went to the prestigious Juilliard music school on the GI Bill. In the 1950s he was a professional singer and guitarist at The Blue Angel, the Village Vanguard and many other famous venues. Then he met singer Harry Belafonte. Their association landed the album “Calypso” at No. 1 on the Billboard charts for 32 weeks and it became the first to sell a million copies. In all, Burgie wrote three calypso albums for Harry Belafonte: “Calypso” (1956), “Belafonte Sings of the Caribbean” (1957) and “Jump Up Calypso” (1961). His songs, which notably include “Mary’s Boy Child,” a Christmas evergreen, have sold over 100 million copies all over the world, as well as being featured on Broadway, TV shows, in movies and in many places where people love to sing. In the 1960s, Burgie wrote the national anthem for the then newly inde-
