That’s because they’ll take part in the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC), the world’s largest student rocket contest and a key piece of the aerospace and defense industry’s strategy to build a stronger U.S. workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This year’s contest challenges students to design, build and fly a rocket carrying two raw eggs to an altitude of 850 feet and return them to ground with the eggs uncracked within 44 to 46 seconds. Much more than broken eggs are at stake. According to the U.S. Department of Education, this country has developed as a global leader, in large part, through the genius and hard work of its scientists, engineers and innovators. In a world that’s becoming increasingly complex, where success is driven not only by what you know but by what you can do with what you know, it’s more important than ever for our youth to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to solve tough problems, gather and evaluate evidence, and make sense of information. These are the types of skills that students learn by studying science, technology, engineering and math— subjects collectively known as STEM. As President Obama remarked, “[Science] is more than a school subject, or the periodic table, or the properties of waves. Sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) and the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), TARC was created in the fall of 2002 as a one-time celebration of the Centennial of Flight, but by popular demand became an annual program. Based on local qualification flights, the top 100 teams are invited to Washington, D.C. in May for the National Finals. Top placing teams split more than $100,000 in cash and scholarships and the overall winning team will travel to the United Kingdom to compete in the International Rocketry Challenge taking place at the Farnborough Airshow in July. The contest’s rules and scoring parameters change every cycle to challenge the students’ ingenuity and encourage a fresh approach to rocket design. Visually Impaired Reader Inspires Author
our years ago, bestselling author Mary Jane Clark spoke at the Friends of the New Jersey Library for the Blind and Handicapped’s Fall Festival. There, she met Ottilie Lucas, a former rehabilitation teacher for people with macular degeneration and other disabilities who is visually impaired herself. After the festival, “we continued our correspondence and one thing led to another,” Lucas says of Clark. “She decided to include a character in her next book with macular degeneration.” And so was born Terri Donovan, introduced in the first book in Clark’s Wedding Cake Mysteries series, 2011’s “To Have and to Kill.”
1966. TBBC is among more than 100 libraries across the United States affiliated with the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), part of the Library of Congress. NLS oversees a free reading program for U.S. residents and citizens living abroad who are blind, have low vision, or cannot hold a book because of a physical disability. NLS patrons may choose from tens of thousands of books and dozens of magazines in audio and braille-including mysteries such as Mary Jane Clark’s. NLS also loans the portable playback equipment needed to read its audiobooks. Patrons may access books online through the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service.
“Mary Jane asked me to give her ways to identify symptoms that a person may be experiencing macular degeneration,” Lucas says. These include blurred vision and difficulty discerning the intensity of colors— symptoms shared by Terri Donovan, who runs a bakery and is the mother of the protagonist of Clark’s series, struggling actress Piper Donovan.
Lucas has been married 49 years and has been on more than 20 ocean cruises. “Ottilie is such an inspiration,” Clark says. “She helped me so much in the creation of Terri Donovan—a mother who faces macular degeneration head-on, who doesn’t feel sorry for herself and is determined to adapt to the challenges she faces. I wish I were as brave as Terri and Ottilie!”

What Happened to the American Dream?
T
hat the middle class is being squeezed is a popular sentiment nationwide. Deciphering whether or not this sentiment holds true, however, may be a secondary concern. According to analysts, the prevalence of this perspective alone has severely limited market growth in the United States over the past decade. In the investment community, many potential investors, especially those with smaller amounts of investment capital or limited experience, are shying away from investing due to perceived risks perpetuated by public sentiment. The number of Americans investing in securities of any type is now at only 54 percent, down 13 percent from its peak in 2002. But just because Americans are not investing does not mean the money does not exist. The Wall Street Journal reported that the Federal Reserve estimate of privately-held wealth in the country is approximately 80.7 trillion dollars, potentially establishing United States citizens as the world’s largest investment bank, by far. This means that hundreds of billions of potential investment dollars remain sidelined. This is money that could potentially fuel the next wave of growth in the United States. The economic stimulus could be significant enough to reduce the national debt, eliminate annual Federal deficits, replace failing infrastructure nationwide and secure Social Security for
future generations, even at lower tax rates. “This equates to an unimaginable amount of money,” says REGULUS CEO David Emery. “If even a small portion not now being productively invested could be deployed in support of Main Street businesses, the economic impact would be tremendous.” Part of the obstacle for many firms is a blend of complicated regulations and vague promises of a fair return. For many middlesized entities, especially, accessible capital is limited. t can happen to even the savviest and most experienced investor. You’re so busy researching an opportunity that you forget to look into the background of the financial professional offering it. Before you invest, checking the credentials and track record of your potential financial professional can help you make smarter choices. Even if you’ve worked with a financial professional before, it’s a good practice to run checks annually on his or her registration status and disciplinary history. Doing this check may even help you avoid fraud. Remember to check at least once each year to make sure there aren’t any new disciplinary actions or other red flags. Pick a date that you’ll remember and put a reminder on your calendar. Where can an investor find such information? The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) launched SmartCheck.gov, with free tools that make it easier. The website also offers updates on fraud trends, interactive videos, and information about reporting fraud. It can happen to me. Really?
Many savvy investors think fraudsters mostly target novices. In fact, research indicates that the typical defrauded investor is quite seasoned. The problem is that schemes are constantly changing and becoming increasingly sophisticated. Between 2010 and 2014, the CFTC took action on fraudulent schemes affecting more than 37,000 investors, with losses totaling nearly $1.15 billion. The majority of these schemes involved unregistered financial professionals. Time to bookmark SmartCheck.gov With user-friendly tools and free access to government registration databases, it only takes a few minutes to get the background information needed to help you make informed investment decisions. What a Business Stands for Can Mean as Much as What It Does

f you’ve ever seen the 1980s movie “Wall Street,” you probably recall Gordon Gekko saying that “greed is good.”
He may have been a bit shortsighted. Times are changing and so are people’s attitudes about corporate America. In fact, a recent survey conducted by the insurance company Aflac suggests Gekko’s days are numbered. Survey Revelations Here are some of the things the study found: * 79 percent of consumers believe companies that stay true to their ethics and values outperform others in their field. * When it comes to millennials, who are 80 million strong with a $200 billion annual purchasing power, 92 percent are more likely to patronize an ethical company. * 81 percent of consumers are more likely to purchase from corporations that are active in philanthropic efforts year-round as opposed to only in times of need. * 60 percent of investors would sacrifice profit for ethical standards when making long-term investment decisions. Companies Should Consider So what is an effective corporate philosophy when it comes to social responsibility? In a day of instant access to information, consumers -- many of whom have been influenced by such much-publicized issues as Enron, bank scandals, high unemployment and recession -- have become much more observant of the actions of corporations, and they’re skeptical. To stay successful, companies are going to have to shift their priorities. Of course, profit is essential to stay in business, but there are presently impediments to profits that didn’t even exist 25 years ago. For example, the study shows millennials have vastly different and stronger demands for corporate social responsibility (CSR) and philanthropy than do those who
are over the age of 35. Interestingly, parents share millennials’ desire to do business with companies that give back, while nonparents have greater indifference. These are important considerations in today’s environment. Combining a greater demand for social responsibility and the fact that the sustained program is preferred by consumers over the opportunistic donations in times of need, companies now must plan their approach to CSR. Companies that have lasting relationships with philanthropic causes (as Aflac does with fighting children’s cancer) are viewed with favor by a growing portion of people affecting the nation’s economy. Corporate giving, however, is not the only determinant of a company’s reputation. Respondents also see integrity as extremely important, so an effective CSR philosophy should promote the integrity of the company, which can manifest itself in many ways. One such factor is diversity. In fact, 65 percent of respondents agree that the higher a company’s ethical standards, the more diverse the workplace will be. Protect Your Rep In today’s culture, businesses that make mistakes are often scolded on social media as being careless or unresponsive to the community. If a company is caught cutting corners or is seen as less than transparent, a steady drumbeat of criticism can threaten its very existence or cause significant costs to overcome the infraction. After all, the old saying “a reputation is hard to earn but easily lost” is generally true. Companies would do well to heed it.
