t seems as though data breaches affecting millions of Americans are constantly in the news these days. If this makes you anxious about the safety of your personal information, that’s understandable. You can protect your data by using secure internet connections rather than public Wi-Fi when you’re providing sensitive information such as financial account numbers online; sending bill payments from public mailboxes and collecting your mail promptly; shredding documents that contain your personal information when they’re no longer needed; keeping your computer and mobile device safe against malware that may be lurking in email attachments, pop-ups and banner ads; downloading apps and other programs only from trusted sources; and being wary of anyone who contacts you unexpectedly asking for it. You can also use the security settings on social media sites to restrict who can see your posts. But when businesses have your data, you can’t control how well it’s safeguarded.

Any account that has your financial information, Social Security number or other sensitive data should have a unique, strong password to keep would-be intruders guessing. • Beef up your authentication. If your user name, which is often your email address, and a password is all it takes to access your accounts, your defenses are relatively weak. Two-factor authentication—your password plus something that only you have, such as a one-time code that is sent to you as part of the log-in process—provides much stronger protection.
According to Consumer Federation of America, there are some easy steps that you can take to make it harder for fraudsters to use your personal information.
• Freeze your credit file. This prevents identity thieves from opening new credit accounts in your name because the lenders won’t be able to access your credit record. Since some landlords and employers also check applicants’ credit records, freezes can also stop fraudulent attempts to get jobs or rent apartments using your identity. Contact the three major credit-reporting agencies—Equifax, Experian and TransUnion—to request a security freeze. You can lift the freeze anytime you need to and reset it. In some situations, you may be able to do this free; otherwise, there will be a small fee.

W
hen scientists first read the entire genetic code of a human being in 2003, the monumental achievement promised a new era in medicine.
What diseases we get, and how we respond to drugs, depends in large part on our own individual genes. Knowing our own genetic code, therefore, makes it possible to design specific treatments that work best for each person - an approach known as personalized medicine. This personalized approach turns out to be especially important in cancer treatment. Tumors that seem to be of the same type can actually have very different underlying genetic mutations. And because many of today’s drugs are designed to target particular genetic vulnerabilities of cancer cells, a drug that is effective for some tumors will fail for others. Realizing the enormous promise of personalized medicine hasn’t been quick or easy. It has required major scientific and technological advances to prove the links between genetic variations and diseases, and to dramatically lower the costs of identifying and sequencing genes.
But recent progress has been impressive. In the last few years, more than one-quarter of all new drugs approved by the FDA have been personalized medicines. And by 2020, the total market for targeted therapies and gene tests is expected to top $149 billion per year. One of the many companies that have been driving this rapid progress is Pittsburgh-based Helomics. The company has developed clinical tests for key genes and other biomarkers in a whole range of different cancers. Studies show that a personalized approach using Helomics’ ChemoFx test brings a 14-month improvement in overall survival in patients with gynecologic cancer. The BioSpeciFx test, for example, examines the genes that are active in cancer cells to reliably inform the patient’s tumor response to drugs. Helomics is also expanding its reach with a new technology it calls D-CHIP™ and a strategic collaboration with Skyline Medical (NASDAQ:SKLN), which markets an innovative system for collecting and disposing of fluids from patients. taying in shape when it’s cold out can be a challenge. Cold weather can make outdoor workouts less appealing, and it can be easy to lose motivation. Fortunately, there are many options to keep you moving. “Don’t let the cold weather discourage you from staying active,” said Tom Holland, exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness adviser. “There are many ways to work up a sweat in the comfort of your home and stay fit during the colder months. What’s important is finding what works for you and sticking with it.” Here are five ways to help you stay fit during the colder months: 1. Embrace the great indoors. You don’t have to be outside to work up a sweat: Opt for workouts you can do at home. If your usual workout involves walking outside, make an effort to fit in some extra steps as you go about your day indoors. Everyday household activities—such as vacuuming, rearranging furniture or organizing closets—burn more calories than you might think. Purposefully making extra trips up and down the stairs for laundry runs or mopping the floors can help get you moving and sweating. In fact, 30 minutes of vacuuming can burn up to 120 calories. No matter your outdoor workout of choice, it’s easy to find a way to incorporate many of the same movements into your indoor activities. 2. Watch TV. That is, use it to help track your progress. 3D Printing Makes Safer, Stronger Airline Parts
he aerospace industry is getting a boost in manufacturing its parts, making them safer and stronger, through a revolutionary new approach called 3D printing or “additive” manufacturing - a process which was invented at MIT in the late 1980s. In the traditional method, companies start with a hunk of metal (or other material). Using milling machines and other tools, they cut or drill away material in order to create the desired part. In contrast, 3D printing builds parts layer by layer, adding material in just the right places to create the precise shapes needed. For aerospace companies, this 3D printing or “additive” manufacturing offers the promise of making parts that are better and stronger, enabling them to build airplanes and rockets that are safer, more reliable, and better performing. GE uses 3D printing to build jet engine fuel nozzles, for instance, instead of welding together 20 small pieces. Technology Review recently named additive manufacturing one of its 10 “Breakthrough Technologies.”
But this new industrial revolution is being held back by a thorny problem. Tiny variations in parameters like temperature or raw material composition can subtly alter how each layer of material is laid down. As a result, it is extraordinarily difficult to build identical top-quality parts every single time. The industry has recognized this problem, and is working hard to solve it. The most promising approach is meticulously monitoring all the relevant parameters as a part is being built, then processing the information to determine if the part meets all standards. That will ensure repeatability, consistency, and reliability. Several companies are working on this idea, but one leader is Santa Fe, NM-based Sigma Labs, Inc (NASDAQ:SGLB). Sigma has developed sophisticated software that monitors the 3D process as a part is being built, and determines whether the product meets quality standards. With the holiday travel season under way, University of Phoenix social sciences program chairs Mary Jo Trombley, Ph.D., N.C.C., and DeAnna Henderson, Ph.D., L.P.C., N.C.C., say that living with chronic or situational depression can be challenging to handle, and travel can add additional burdens.

Practice self-management: Self-management is the ability to manage your personal reactions to responsibilities and challenges in work and life. This becomes critical during times of adapting to changing situations. Recognizing triggers and your body’s response to unfamiliar and stressful situations can help keep depressive symptoms at bay.
What Is Depression? The American Psychological Association defines depression as a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. The association lists common symptoms of depression as including feelings of sadness or depression, change in sleep patterns and eating habits, loss of energy, feelings of fatigue, loss of interest in activities, and the inability to think, concentrate or make decisions. According to Dr. Trombley, these symptoms can become exacerbated when traveling. She states that traveling should not be seen as a cure for depression. It can be a way to obtain temporary relief but worry, stress, pressure and loneliness are contributing factors to depression and are often present for travelers. “Traveling comes with changes in routine, pressures of time commitments, and changes in eating, sleeping and exercising patterns,” Dr. Henderson added. “These changes can trigger a sense of not being in control and increase the sense of depression.” Tips for Traveling with Depression Depression can be challenging. Drs. Trombley and Henderson provide the following strategies to help individuals cope when traveling. Plan ahead: For someone who may be struggling with depression, it is best to plan for travel as opposed to making an impulsive trip. Plan as much of the trip as possible. Know your route and possible delays, and

Use appropriate coping strategies: Techniques that help people manage stressful and/or traumatic situations are coping strategies. These strategies can include the use of mindfulness, guided imagery, deep breathing exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation. Additionally, reaching out to support systems during this time can diminish feelings of loneliness during travel. Finally, the use of humor can be effective in reducing stress. Get a sufficient amount of sleep, exercise, and eat well: Travel can be exhausting. It is important to maintain patterns of sleep and healthy eating while traveling. Moreover, the maintenance of an exercise routine can also help reduce stress and release endorphins while traveling. It is also important to limit alcohol consumption as alcohol is a depressant and may exacerbate depressive symptoms. Be realistic about your travel plans: Recognize that even though you have planned your travel, unplanned situations can occur. Maintaining a flexible stance can reduce the amount of stress experienced if travel does not go as planned. Also, while travel may alleviate some depressive symptoms, do not be alarmed if your symptoms return once the travel has ended. Reducing Your Risk Of Heart Attack

The Problem Juggling all the extra pressures of a busy holiday schedule can wreak havoc on your healthy habits, but it’s one of the most dangerous times to lower your guard. Research shows deaths from heart attacks peak during December and January. “Changes in diet and alcohol consumption; stress from family interactions, strained finances, travel and entertaining; and even respiratory problems from burning wood are all possible reasons for the increase in heart attacks during the holidays,” explains John Osborne, M.D., Ph.D., a preventive cardiologist for State of the Heart Cardiology. A Solution If you’ve had a heart attack, it’s especially important to maintain a healthy diet, stick to an exercise plan and take medicines as prescribed. About 20 percent of heart attack survivors over the age of 45 will have another heart attack within five years of their first. “Making lifestyle changes can be difficult,” adds Osborne. “Many of my patients use mobile apps that provide education and electronic reminders to help stay focused on how to protect their heart health and minimize risks.” One such app is My Cardiac Coach, a free and easy-to-use mobile app developed by the American Heart Association that empowers people to

One Man’s Story For example, Lex Roulston overhauled his diet and increased exercise after having a quintuple bypass surgery in 2001, since all five of his coronary arteries were blocked. Roulston said he “never thought about what he ate or worried about his health,” and that his bypass surgery “was a big wake-up call” to take his health seriously and protect his heart health. Studies Show Handwriting Improves Memory
A
ccording to a recent study at Kent State University, the Association for Psychological Science (APS) and others, using pen and paper instead of laptops to take notes boosts memory and increases the ability to retain and understand concepts. Of course, in the past, handwriting was the only option for capturing key information. But if a pencil broke or the pen stopped working, important details could be lost. Then, along came the laptop and tablet, and taking notes seemed so much easier. But it turns out that taking notes by hand helps improve listening and cognition skills, and boosts the ability humans need to summarize information. The Journal of Psychological Science cites that taking handwritten notes appears to be more beneficial, as it helps one remember and understand the information given, as opposed to participants who mindlessly take verbatim notes on a laptop.
