Since 1999, Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) Program has helped?thousands of Social Security disability beneficiaries find their way to financial independence. The Ticket Program can connect you with free, individualized employment services to help you decide if working is right for you, prepare for the workforce, search for a job and stay employed. If you choose to participate, you can receive services such as career counseling, benefits counseling, job training and job search assistance from State Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agencies and authorized providers known as Employment Networks (EN). Some ENs offer specific types of support services while others have experience serving certain populations. Adults (ages 18 through 64) who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability are eligible to participate. If you feel ready for work, don’t let the fear of immediately losing your benefits stand in the way. Social Security rules and programs known as Work Incentives may make it possible for you to explore working while maintaining access to some or all of your benefits payments and your Medicare/Medicaid coverage. New Diabetes Medication Good for the Heart By Dr. Ramo
JT is a 61-year-old woman with a seven-year history of type II diabetes mellitus who had enrolled in the New Heart New You program for weight management and exercise training. Four-year previously, she had a heart attack and a coronary artery stent placed. Subsequently, she remains free of further cardiac problems. She is obese with a BMI of 31, sits at work 7 hours and hates exercise. Her blood pressures have not been well controlled. She was being treated for high LDL cholesterol with a statin. Her diabetes is well controlled. Her current medications are atorvastatin, lisinopril and metformin.

The new class of drugs called sodium-glucose cotransporter (SGLT2) inhibitors (dapagliflozin, empagliflozin, or canagliflozin) has changed all of that .The initial . clinical trials of these drugs intended to demonstrate their benefits on lowering blood sugar and reduce the eye and kidney complications of diabetes. The SGLT2 inhibitors provided an unexpected benefit for the heart. Scientific studies have shown SGLT2 inhibitors reduced the risk of developing heart failure and hospitalization for heart failure in patients with never had heart failure. The damage to the heart causing heart failure was reversed (a term called reverse remodeling). Additionally, patients who have most severely damaged hearts also benefited from these agents. In September 2020, the drugs were reported to provide the same benefits to similar patients without diabetes. Ironically a drug originally developed to lower blood sugar protected the heart. Researchers have not established the precise mechanism why this class of drugs acts on the heart.
Diabetes carries an increased risk for heart disease of several types. Coronary artery disease leading to heart attacks and heart failure. Heart attacks lead to destruction of heart muscle and eventually heart failure. Diabetes causes a unique type of heart damage termed diabetic cardiomyopathy. . Cardiomyopathy means heart muscle disease. In diabetes, cardiomyopathy results from obstruction of the small blood vessels or arterials that supply oxygen to the heart muscle. Changes To New Mexico’s Holiday Traditions By Liz Otero

ew Mexico is rich in holiday traditions. In years past, we’ve celebrated in Southwest fashion with Las Posadas, Albuquerque’s Luminaria Tours, the Twinkle Light Parade, and New Mexico’s largest walk-through light show, the River of Lights. Each year we kick off the holiday season with the annual lighting of the Christmas tree at Historic Old Town Plaza and various holiday strolls throughout the city. But with the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting countless live events, there has been much speculation about how local celebrations will be pulled off, if at all, this year. Some celebrations have been reimagined in hopes of keeping the holiday magic alive. These include live streamed and virtual celebrations that may be enjoyed from the comfort of your own home and drive-through formats from a distance in your car. Many events around the state have been modified or were awaiting confirmation to occur as of deadline for this story.
• Mini Holiday Market with The Studio Artists of 718 Central is a monthlong event that kicks off with the opening of ABQArtwalk from 5-8 p.m. December 4.
